This was such a wonderful experience! Stopped in on a Sunday evening at 7:30pm with a party of 4, none of us had eaten here before. We were greeted promptly and given the choice to sit wherever. Sandy was our waitress, and she was fabulous! Very friendly and very attentive to our table. We ordered a TON of food. Everything was delicious. For appetizers we had Gyoza, Wasabi Ping Pong, and Grilled Squid. The gyoza was good, as expected, but the Wasabi Ping Pong was the surprise hit...spicy and delicious. Entrees consisted of steak hibachi (steak was cooked perfectly), ramen shrimp stir-fry, and 4 different rolls. The unanimous hit was the Level Up roll. Listen up Yelpers, Level has some seriously yummy sushi! Always fresh and with a nice variety of interesting rolls, it's one of my favorite places to get my sushi fix. I can't speak to the entrees because out of the fifteen or so times I've been there I've actually only ever ordered sushi; sounds pretty crazy now that I'm saying it out loud. The menu is expansive with lots of options including steak + seafood entrees, hibachi and a selection of appetizers The thing about Level though is that it's in kind of a random location; an old insurance office next to a sketchy(ish) 7-eleven. The decor is cool; modern with a futuristic touch. The bar has an especially neat feature where it lights up when you touch it. I've only eaten at Level for lunch, so I don't know what the crowd is like at dinner, but whenever I've dined there it's been deadsville... like only one or two other tables in the joint. I'm not sure what that means for the future but I do hope they can ramp up some lunchtime business!. Pros: The food was good. I ordered shrimp lo mein and the Chesapeake Bay sushi rolls. Cons: Parking is horrible. I would much rather park on the street instead of parking in their parking area. The dumpster is right there, so as soon as you open your car door OMG the smell... I don't want to smell that before I eat smh. The alley way (where parking is located) has holes all over the place, so be careful walking and driving. It does not look like a safe place to park at night and I do not recommend parking there unless you get the first parking spot. Although my waiter was nice, customer service is not the best. They appear to have one waiter and one bartender, which could be a major problem when there are several hungry guests Other: The parking area may run you away, but the inside of the restaurant looks completely different... If you order sushi keep an eye out because the sushi bar will have it made and the servers will hang around texting and crap then when they feel like serving the sushi they will. Level has great quality sushi. The ambiance is great and the light up bar is always fun to play with. The hubs and I have been twice, and each time we split The Love Boat. Straight up sushi / shasimi deliciousness! This place would get 5 stars, but their service sucks. The last time we were there, out server was just bumming around in the corner, and it took her 15 minutes after we finished eating for her to get her butt over and clear the table. I tried signaling for her a few times, but it was like I was a figment of her imagination. Its not like it was busy that night, there was only one other table. The time before, the service was also sub par. When you are looking for the new "IT" spot in town with great, fresh food, look no further than this little spot on the Broad Street strip. From the edamame appetizer, large glass of vino to the fresh handmade sushi and sashimi, this girl left happy and full. Not only was our group of 8 sat upstairs (a great mix of newbies, out-of-towners and returning fans), we were not only sat quickly, but our server was outstanding. What great service! Even better, the manager/owner was kind enough to come visit us and see how our experience was. They were currently catering to a large group of 20 folks and wanted to ensure we were still enjoying our experience. Parking is on the side and back of the building, which was never a problem for our group as we were all able to find parking super close. The building is nestled near the corner so it was not a problem to get to it with ease. Walking in, it is def a fun spot in the city and it was super clean and with the modern decor, made for a fun asian fusion spot locals need to see. If you are coming to sit at the bar for a drink, have no fear, for you will be just as entertained with the light-up bar. Went to Level for lunch with my wife. We were pleased to know they do soy paper substitutions for a dollar, since my wife dislikes nori (the seaweed paper used to wrap sushi). It was the meal so nice, we ate it twice. Here's what I mean: We started with edamame and lollipop lamb chops for appetizers. Edamame was edamame. Lamb was very tender and teriyaki glaze was delicious. We ordered several pieces of sushi, specialty rolls and a couple of draft beers. Draft beer list is extensive with good variety and selection. But the big difference between Level and most places was the quality of the fish and seafood going in. Scallops were like butter. Eel was velvety. Flavors on the rolls melted together with each bite. And when we were done, we decided to just start over again and have all the things we wavered on before. Gyoza were clearly handmade and delicious. Next series of rolls were amazing. Our favorites were the Chesapeake and Dynamite. Exterior isn't impressive. It's a concrete brick on a strip of Broad Street that won't generate foot traffic. But the interior is slick and modern and very inviting. It was priced as you would imagine good sushi to be priced. Our gluttonous "double lunch" for two was $150 with tip. But the fish was really, really good. I worked at Iron Chef Morimoto's restaurant in Philly, and have eaten sushi all over the country. Level is the best I've had in a long time. read more

Level is definitely a hidden gem! My friend wanted to come here for her birthday dinner. When I pulled up to the parking lot, I thought it looked super shady and run down from the outside. Once you come inside it is very nice and clean. Our waitress was extremely nice and helpful which made our dinner more enjoyable. They had large selections from the menu and couldn't help myself and ordered so much food! For starters, I ordered the peking duck wrap which was amazing. I definitely recommend it. Followed by sweet potato rolls and chicken tempura rolls that were decent but I definitely had better. For my main course, I got the crispy honey chicken it was delicious but spicy so keep that in mind if you order it. The best thing about this place was the drinks! Everything was very good but our favorite was the lychee martini! So definitely don't let the outside of this place fool you and check it out and you MUST get the lychee martinis and you can thank me later! read more

Um... yum? Most incredible food ever. I have never experienced a bad meal at Level.  The sushi is awesome, the wait staff is on points, the drinks (although a little strong for my liking - not a bad thing) are always good, awesome dinner menu, and they have an unbelievable lunch special!  The touch bar are relaxing . I can't say one bad thing about Level.   I keep going on about lunch but seriously, for 15 dollars you roll out of there! NOT your typical Bento Box! I love Bento Boxes just as much as the next person but at Level they are special, like heavenly special, like Oprah and Bob Ross just paired up to paint a mural special.  Sushi roll, some other special like shrimp gyoza, shrimp tempura, - all types of stuff that I can't remember because everytime I'm there I go into food porn overload.  Look at the menu, try Level for lunch OR dinner ( equally as good).  You'll be impressed. I was SHOCKED by how fresh the sushi is here. I think the decor is not to my taste- black leather, black lights, looks kind of like a strip club (I imagine?). But I had heard good things about fresh sushi, and I was desperate to find something like that in Richmond. Akida is good, but I am so thankful for Level. We got a spicy tuna, california and shrimp tempura rolls. I figure these are the basic rolls. The quality of these rolls will really illuminate how fresh their sushi is. It was fantastic- Not overwhelmed with rice and what tasted like super fresh fish! I will be back- I am curious about their "fusion" entrees. But so happy this sushi choice is here!!! Best sushi place in Richmond, hands down. Creative, unique, delicious and fresh takes on raw seafood no matter what I've tried (everything on the menu). They offer several other entree options, including hibachi, but their sashimi is some of the best I've ever had. It's also not 90% tuna/salmon like some of the platters I've had elsewhere. Even the cocktails are unique and delicious! Great happy hour deals from all-you-can-eat-maki Monday to half off wine Wednesdays. This is the only restaurant where I've been able to find kumamoto oysters, so that's pretty impressive. Okay, this place was such a shocker. I live right by it and always pass it driving on broad, but honestly the outside looks a little shabby so I never gave it a second thought. Well, I am so glad I went tonight. The inside decor is absolutely gorgeous with beautiful hanging light fixtures and soft blue lighting. There is a full bar as well as a sushi bar, lots of tables and booths and we even spotted a large party in the back. They offer a full sushi menu, specialty rolls included. They also have entrees as well as hibachi. I ordered the filet mignon hibachi which was so tender I could cut it with my fork. Hibachi comes with a delicious ginger salad and miso soup as well. My father had the chicken hibachi which was incredibly fresh and not dried out at all. We shared a specialty roll and my father and I agreed that everything tasted fresh. We caved and got dessert- Tiramisu. At an Asian fusion restaurant-I know. But it was surprisingly very good and we left super happy! Also as a sidenote: we went on a Thursday night when they have live jazz music at 8 each week. Awesome atmosphere for sure. Would love to return for lunch sometime and try some more items! So after moving to RVA from California, I was on the hardcore hunt to find some GOOD sushi... Well, I would say Level gave it a good run but it was no trip to authentic Japanese sushi :) I ordered the Godzilla and the Philly that night and overall good. The rice was not as packed and prepped like other sushi rice I've had in the past. As for the fish, it was pretty good...I was neither impressed or disappointed. The price for the basic rolls were really affordable but some of the "special" were two money signs worthy. However, you get the same amount of rolls from both categories. The ambiance of the place was awesome! Definitely go at night and if you happen to sit at the bar, you will get entranced by the colorful, interactive lit up bar top. We went on a Friday night and it wasn't packed at all. However, just as a FYI, they do stop serving sushi earlier than the actual closing of the place. read more

Level took over what had been an abandoned insurance company. They did a flawless job in renovating the space. It has a very club feel to it. Almost felt like I was not on the edge of the Fan. Their bar lights up when you sit at it- which is an interesting feature. They have all type of american-asian food. They have a full bar and looked like they had an interesting mixed drink list. We got the gyozo dumplings and edamame for appetizers. The dumplings were excellent. I ordered the hibachi which came with miso soup, ginger salad, and the hibachi. A great bang for your buck. It was a large portion of rice, veggies, chicken and a mystery sauce. I really liked it. My dining partners ordered chicken lo mein and the other got a sushi. Everybody had nothing but good things to say. They pay attention to plating- so everything LOOKS great. We will definitely go back and are happy to have them in the neighborhood. read more

I worked at a sushi restaurant for 5 years and I'm pretty good at knowing when the fish quality is high. The fish here is fresh and not cheap like most places around in the city. I went in for lunch on a Sunday, so I can't really speak about Happy Hour or the dinner ambiance. Level has a very nice bar with lots of interesting drinks to choose from. They spotted 20+ different beers in tap. Light to dark, Pilsners to Stouts...there is a drink in the menu you'll enjoy. The meal was fantastic. I ordered a few different things to eat. The quality of the fish was pretty good and the rolls were prepared exquisitely. We tried the sushi sampler (5pc sushi combo...chef's choice), Fall in Love Roll, Rock and Roll, and a Dynamite Roll. All were amazing. The Rock and Roll was my least favorite of the bunch, but still decent. The stars were definitely the Fall in Love roll and the Dynamite Roll. We stopped by for dinner because we live a block away and wanted to check out the new neighbor! We were happily surprised by the 1/2 price apps on Tuesdays. We ordered crispy spring rolls and chicken lettuce wraps. The wraps were the best I've ever had. Amazing umami flavor. Also had the dynamite roll and avacado roll. I have been here a few times before, sat at the bar, ordered to go food and last night my boyfriend and I got a table. There seemed to be only one server/bartender on, although it wasn't too busy so she had no problem taking our order in a very timely manner. The bar filled up and a few tables walked in and the server got a little flustered, but did her best to pay attention to everyone. (They were down a server, which happens all the time in restaurants) Food was great, got a basic ginger salad, Tofu side pocket appetizer, and a few rolls. Don't hesitate to go here, I would like to see there be more business! I am pretty picky about my Asian food having been to Seoul, S Korea and Toyko, Japan and this food is up there for good Asian food in Richmond.They have a pretty good happy hour and specials Tuesday-Thursday! read more

I was very excited to try Levels sushi, having just moved to the area I have heard good things. Unfortunately we were unable to actually try the food. We ordered online 3 rolls of sushi and lo mein. On the way to pick it up we got a weird call from the online menu service asking if the order was correct because they had not been able to contact the restaurant. Not a good sign. Sure enough we got there (after leaving an ample 40 min for them to complete our order) and they didn't have our food. Their only explanation was that the online ordering doesn't work and next time we should try calling instead. They did offer to put an order in at that moment but we were starving and angry so we left and went to chicken fiesta down the street (which is amazing btw). It's a shame this place appears empty more often than not. They have awesome food and a huge selection of various asian dishes. I will say the interior is a little different and they have a really cool bar that lights up different colors when you touch it. Crispy honey chicken is a great dish to get for takeout, but make sure you sub in fried rice, it's 100% worth it. I have to say if this place had a better location, or maybe even a sign that didn't make it look like a cheap chinese place they would probably do a lot better. Take out is always quick, and service is awesome if you dine in. I prefer this place over Fat Dragon although both are good. read more

We went here on a Friday, and the place was completely dead. Sure, it was hardly during the dinner rush, but you're doing something wrong if your bar has one solitary dude watching the World Series on a Friday night. It comes down to atmosphere. You've got high ceilings, breathy trip-hop piped through the speakers, and dark walls. Ok, you're going for a loungy vibe. But the bright lighting kills it. It felt like someone spruced up a high school cafeteria. You've got candles, so why not use them? Menu was a no-effort print off stuck inside a dirty plastic sleeve like I had in a gradeschool notebook. The food wasn't that great, though that's to be expected for a sushi joint anywhere in the periphery of VCU. Sake was delivered with a wet paper napkin tied around the neck of the flask. For the work you've put into the place, I'd have hoped the food could stand up. After reading the articles on the wall in the foyer praising the sushi chef's ability and tasting the near-room-temperature offerings, something here just doesn't match up. Service was rather casual, but otherwise little else to speak of. I asked for hot tea, and got a diner mug with a teabag. What kind of sushi restaurant doesn't have proper green tea?! I hope the cocktails are the real draw of the place, and we just happened to miss a gem to be found here. read more

That was probably because when my wife called to ask about where parking was, he laughed at her and she didn't take kindly to it. It seemed like a lame attempt to rectify his rudeness.
