This is such an underrated eye care practice. After spending many years in Alhambra, I'm upset at myself that I haven't found them sooner. Dr. Lew has many years of experience working in the optometry field, and I admire how his office presents patients with the necessary eye care they need. I appreciate that he gives you plain, honest recommendations, and I love the fact that their office doesn't really push you on purchasing their products. But I would still happily purchase glasses or contact lenses from them to keep supporting their business. Nowadays, it's hard to come across a practice that really cares about its patients. The office is more on the old-fashioned side, so the sign-in sheet is by paper, and glasses prescriptions are by paper, too. I also went in on a weekday by calling ahead to Margaret. Dr. Lew is friendly and easy to talk to, its important to feel that you can communicate with your optometrist and not be intimidated by technical terms. You should only trust people with years of experience under their belt, especially when it comes to something as delicate and sensitive as your eyes. I first found this place using my health insurance's online provider locator. It would have been great if there were more reviews done on healthcare services, most website just give out providers on how close they are to you, which isn't that helpful. I would be willing to drive farther for a better doctor than a sucky one that's close by... One experience which stood out was when I was vacationing in Hawaii. One of my contacts washed away in the ocean. Being the dummy I was and not having a spare pair... I had to call Dr. Lew up and ask him to fax over my prescription to an Optometrist in Hawaii so I can pick up a trial pair to last me through my vacation. Thank goodness I brought my glasses with me on the trip, I am seriously blind without them. I know it was a hassle and glad Dr. Lew stuck through the ordeal of working with a different time zone and optometrist in another state. read more

I have been seeing Doctor Lew for years and years; however, during my last visit he convinced me to try contact lenses. I was apprehensive at first, but he told me to give it a try. After my thorough eye exam, he GAVE me a pair of contacts to sample and try for a few weeks! Well, Doctor Lew was so right! I love my contact lenses and never wear my glasses anymore! My contacts are so much more comfortable than glasses, and I love the fact that I can wear any pair of sunglasses that are NOT prescription and see just fine. Doctor Lew takes care of my entire family, including my sister and niece who are both disabled. He is so compassionate and patient with them, often having to spend much more extra time with them then he does with his other patients. To me, this speaks volumes about his character! He genuinely cares about his patients and this is the MAIN reason my friends, family, and I will continue to be his patients. read more

I'm very glad the other customers got good service from Dr. Lew. Hopefully, I'm the only unlucky one. I had my 2nd visit with Dr. Lew this year for exam. After getting my prescription from him, I took it to Sears to get my new eye glasses. When I picked up my new glasses from Sears, I found it was blurry when I read the books I brought with me. I asked Sears if my glasses were bifocal. They said no bcuz my prescription was D.V. (distant) only. (I don't know my vision has improved so much in one year - all my N.V. is gone?!) I called Dr. Lew and asked him why my prescription had Distant only but no Near Vision. I got the most ridiculous and nonsense answer from him. He said, "I don't know you want bi-focal. I thought you needed distant only." He has never communicated/asked me if I need distant, near sight and/or bi-focal at all. I'm upset he has given me a wrong or "partial correct" prescription. However, I'm more upset he did not apologize for the mistake he has made and the inconvenience he has caused me but give me such a ridiculous and nonsense answer. I don't understand how he would have made such a bad mistake. What issues does he have? Besides extremely expensive eye glasses, horrible customer services, prideful, careless, .... Do yourself a favor: Double check your prescription with him and make sure he gives you a 100% correct one (not partial only). Good luck to the rest of his customers!!!! read more

I visited Dr. Lew in 2012 for my eye exam and to pick out new glasses. My reason for picking him was based on the few but high reviews I saw on Yelp. In hindsight, I wish I would have gone elsewhere. Here are my reasons. - Stepping into the office is like going back in time. The furniture and electronic equipment look like they could have been there in 1982. This is fine, but it made me wonder if the latest technology was being utilized to make sure my eyes would be taken care of properly. Some money should be invested to make the place more modern-looking, right? - When I picked out the glasses I wanted from the limited selection, the proper checks were not made to make sure they fit me right. Now I know I should have known better and make sure myself. But sometimes, a ten second period putting on glasses while the doctor is waiting for you is not the best way to see if frames really fit well. No measurements were taken. He went ahead and approved a size 50 frame when a size 55 was more appropriate! Talk about a waste of my money all because no one in the office did the appropriate checks. When I picked up my glasses and put them on for him, he actually said they looked good on me. A few minutes wearing the glasses and the feel of my temples being crushed by the frames proved otherwise. There are some positives. Dr. Lew was very friendly and sociable to me and I felt comfortable during the eye exam. It felt like he genuinely cared about who I was. I just wish more care was put into making sure the glasses I chose fit properly as is in the case in virtually every other place. read more

I tried other doctors when I moved from Alhambra but they didn't have the same expertise that Dr. Lew has. So I went back! I drive the 30 miles just to see him. I don't care much about the office decor-- I go there not to sit on fancy chairs but to get my eyes checked. Dr. Lew always gives me the right prescription the first time (with the other doctors, I had to go back several times just to get it right). Their office personnel is also friendly. No fuss or fluff. I needed glasses for night time driving so I went to see Dr. Lew. Dr. Lew is friendly and easy going. He was very personable and helped me picked out my frame. I am giving only 4 stars because I was annoyed that I had to wait 30 mins after my appt. time. Also, the receptionist/front desk person is not that friendly. She needs a course in Customer Service asap but I don't think Dr. Lew cares. She looks like she's been working there for a long time so most likely isn't going anywhere. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Lew for over 20 years. As with the other yelpers to mention, Dr. Lew is very friendly and professional. I appreciate his honesty about different treatments ranging from laser surgery, contact lenses, and cataract surgery. Some optometrists or ophthalmologists will recommend (sell) medical procedures that would pad their pocketbooks rather then recommending and doing things that are best for their patients. Dr. Lew is not one of these providers. Yes I could get my contact lenses cheaper from Costco, but I would rather support a service provider who gives me advice for my own benefit rather than their's. read more

They're both very nice and welcoming. Been going since I was 8 years old. They have plenty of glasses options and they always put on a smile. Dr. Lew is very cordial and gentle and makes sure you're comfortable. He takes his time with making sure you get everything you need. Came here as a new customer to get my contact prescription and I will not be returning. I had insurance and used that but I was charged almost $80.00 copay. I paid it thinking I was charged more as a new patient. The doctor told me to go back a second time so that he could check how my eyes were after wearing the contacts for 2 weeks. I did and for this 2nd visit I was charged the same price again and I paid. The doctor said he think my eyes had something that he would like to look at in another 2 weeks. Okay I was thinking I had an eye infection or something so I did. Finally he said that everything was okay he just wanted to keep an eye on my eyes because it seemed like my eyes were allergic to the contacts at first but now everything is fine. He told me to pay the receptionist the same price again, and I finally told him that I paid twice already and what was my insurance for if he kept charging me? He took my file and looked at it and said oh he didn't realize that I paid the first time so that was why he charged me the 2nd time. But what about the 3rd? He said sorry he didn't realize and offered to help me order the contacts with the money I paid. I said fine, but I also wanted him to give me my prescription. He said that since he is already ordering the contacts for me that I did not need the prescription. I told him that I wanted it because elsewhere will be cheaper and I needed the prescription for that. He said that just because contacts are cheaper doesn't mean that they will be better for my eyes. I told him it will still be the same ones but just cheaper in price not quality. He said that it would be better for him to order contacts for me and he would give me a good price. I told him no, I would like to have the prescription anyways so that I could shop around. The DOCTOR got mad and said fine but he won't be responsible for what happens, wrote the prescription, and angrily tore it off and gave it to the receptionist and won't even look at me or say anything to me and left. The receptionist gave it to me and said she'll call when the contacts arrived. When I went to pick up the contacts the receptionist only handed me two boxes of contacts. I told her I thought with my insurance and extra payment I was getting the whole year's supply. She said the doctor said to only order me 2 and if I wanted more I had to pay. I told her I already paid when he overcharged me the 2nd time and would have for the 3rd time if I didn't say anything. But I knew she was just the receptionist and was doing what her boss told her to do. Just a note $80.00 for 2 boxes of contacts are extremely expensive. For that price I can get close to a years supply. I knew that he cheated me this once, but he lost my business forever. This DOCTOR whom I only went to based on Yelp reviews will never go there again. Greedy, uncaring, greedy, greedy, greedy. He may seem nice at first meeting and when he is getting his way, but his nasty side appears when he is not getting his way. He wants his patients to go to him for the check up, buy the glasses or contacts from him, and pretty much taking all the business for himself so that he could make more money. He does not want to give the prescription because he wanted me to buy the contacts from him and he was charging way, way, way, too much for them anyways. As a doctor he cannot withhold my prescription from me. Patients have the right to their prescription. Hello??!! Just for that bit of greed this doctor has lost my services forever. Yes, it's been 7 years and I'm still going to Dr. Lew. In fact, I live in San Francisco now and each year, when I visit LA, I go back to Dr. Lew. He's a keeper. I enjoy everything about his office, from the furniture that has probably been there since the midcentury and is so retro it's hip again (it is SO 60's, NOT 80's as someone pointed out, 80's would've been puffy leather) to the simple old-fashioned salt-of-earth care. All this time, he has the same staff (low turnover, loyalty) and the same easy-going low-key nature. He listens to whatever I say and takes it into account. Anytime I need new disposable contacts, or bring in my old glasses that I sat on for fixing, or remove tinting I no longer want, or reframe old lenses when I get tired of a style, he's there (yes, even from 400 miles away). I have really bad eyes, pushing the limits of correction, and I really think his gentle correction has kept them from getting worse (I used to go to other optometrists, who would overcorrect, strain and hurt my eyes, and my eyes would get worse), although I have no way of backing my theory up.
