I really wanted to have a positive experience with this optometry practice because the optometrist is great. However, after my contact lens exam in December 2024, I'm still waiting for my prescription as of February 13th. Initially, they had me try out new contacts they were partnered with, but the wrong ones were ordered. I didn't receive the correct contacts until January. Unfortunately, those were uncomfortable, and since then, I've emailed and called multiple times to request my prescription without any response. I'm not sure if this is an issue with the front desk or the optometrist, but the lack of communication and follow-through is really disappointing and unacceptable. Additionally, I was interested in getting a glaucoma exam with them either out of pocket or with my insurance, but the receptionist never checked my insurance or followed up with me about the exam. Two weeks later, I went to there, the staff told me it was delayed, and said sorry. Today, three weeks later, I got their message that I can take it. When I get there, my eyes glasses didn't fix and they refunded me $100, that means they charged me $45. Dr. Lam has been my eye doctor for years & he's great! He's very personable & knowledgeable. I joke that he always gives the hardest test. Is view 9 or 10 better? They look the same to me!! I cant tell!! Right now I'm using soft contacts and glasses as back up. I've tried the Ortho-K lenses for 2 years but they weren't for me. They work similar to retainers. You wear the hard lenses to sleep & when you wake up & take them off, you have 20/20 vision! They are temporary so you have to put them on every night. It's good for people who can't wear contracts because they work outdoors/windy areas. They were having a special & I tried them out. They have a great selection of frames. I love my Coach ones. Lots of name brand varieties also. The girls at the front are so amazing!! Everyone is super sweet & helpful! They take vision insurance so make sure to provide that. Brought both my kids here for their eye exams (two diff trips). Each child had diff issues and Dr. Scott and his staff were patient, pleasant, and professional with them. As a "helicopter mom", I'm extremely picky with all and any doctors, etc that my kids see. Sometimes we have crappy insurance that only have crappy doctors on the list so I end up paying out of pocket just to see the doctors of my choice for them. They have great cleanliness and a nice office. Cool selection of glasses too. But... super... super creepy religious. But... seems like the turnover rate is high, always new employees. Every time I've been, they ask a lot of questions that they should know, like when my last exam was... even asking if I have any specific problems w my eyes.... I have to keep asking them to check the charts, because they have all the information. One of the doctors had an odd conversation with me. He kept trying to give strange advice and came off like someone who is unhappy, and in some type of daze. then I realized why he was weird. I think he was quoting a Bible.. It hit me 2 appointments later when I noticed the heavy Christian music. Christianity, and many religions are beautiful but... I'm talking like.. on the verge of tears, inspirational Christian music. A little too loud too. I have nothing wrong with religion, but when it gets THAT religious, it's creepy. These are the type of Christian's you don't want to mingle with. I begin to suspect things... do these people believe in science? Do they hate gay people? Are they vaccinated? This is not the scientific/educated approach that id like when it comes to medical care. Unfortunately I would not recommend this optometrist's office to anybody. Never have I interacted with such an unprofessional office in my life. Get ready, this is a long review. I had used to come to this optometrist's office for a few years before and never had a problem until this year. At first I was going to skip my annual eye exam due to COVID, however I needed to get my contacts lens prescription renewed so I bit the bullet and went ahead and scheduled it despite being really nervous due to COVID. Initially when I arrived, I was pleased to see that they practiced safe protocols in regards to COVID. I had to sign a waiver and had my temperature checked before I entered. However, it seems like that was the extent of their COVID safety protocol. Unfortunately, Dr. Lam does not believe in mask wearing. Yes, he will wear one during your appointment, however his nose is constantly exposed throughout the exam. You will also see that he will freely walk around his office and around all his staff without a mask on both before and after your appointment. While all his staff will wear masks, he will sit amongst everybody not wearing a mask. To make matters worse, during our appointment, he made me feel extremely uncomfortable. He asked me how I was doing and I responded with the generic "As good as I could be doing given what's going on". As soon as I said that, he proceeded to go down an unsolicited path of trying to convince me that COVID was no different from the flu and that COVID is just some thing hyped up by the media. He then asked me to prove to him where I got my "source of information" when I responded that COVID was deadlier than the flu. Remember, this all stemmed from me just answering his question of "how are you doing?". At that point I said, "I would prefer to move this conversation in a different direction, I'm just here to get my eyes examined and go home." He apologized for "making me feel uncomfortable" and then said "I just want to make sure that people are informed about why they are so afraid." I was glad when the exam was over because I just wanted to leave ASAP due to how uncomfortable I was with Dr. Lam interrogating me about COVID as well as him saying things suggesting that he did not take COVID seriously whatsoever. Before I left, I was told by Dr. Lam that they switched over to a new billing platform and that I would have to pay upfront and that I would have to submit paperwork to get reimbursed by my insurance later. I said fine, whatever. I just wanted to leave. 2 weeks after my exam, when I called to inquire if my contacts arrived, they told me that they haven't ordered the contacts yet but would look into it and let me know. A day passes by and I don't get a call back. I call and text almost every day asking for a return call and finally 3 days after my first call I got a response. I got a call from their billing person letting me know that their office actually isn't in network for me anymore as of 2020 and that I wouldn't be able to use my in-network insurance benefits AND that Dr. Lam collected the wrong amount of money from me during my initial appointment. I was appalled. I cannot believe that none of this was explained to me until 2 weeks after my exam!! Had I known they weren't in network, I would have just gone somewhere else. Also it was clear that Dr. Lam had no idea what was going on. He collected the wrong amount of money from me and did not explain anything correctly during my initial appointment. So 2 weeks after my exam, I had to find a brand new provider to order contacts from that was actually in my insurance network. This office is a mess and the most unprofessional office I've ever been to. Dr. Lam for some reason feels it is his obligation to preach to you and convince you why he thinks COVID isn't a big deal. Avoid at all costs. Take your business elsewhere where they actually take mask wearing & COVID seriously and will actually verify your insurance before you get seen. read more

I used to be a regular for MPO Eyecare in the early 2010s but no more. My 2019 visit changed my perspective. I was suffering from anxiety and digestive issues. I went in for my yearly eye exam. Dr. Lam was always friendly and always would caring for his patients. This time around when began conversation with me it was different. I talked about my anxiety and issues and he began encouraging me that I needed to connect with god more. I was like ok. He kept suggesting towards a spiritual connection in terms of my anxiety. I did not like that. Since then I have been on the fence about it. However, the recent reviews about he handled Covid-19 and to top it off I was not the only one that he has suggested god and church services, means that I must look for another optometrist. I used their services several years ago and was satisfied. I went back in June and had a deeply uncomfortable experience. Everyone was friendly, but I wish I had noticed their "have faith not fear" sign prior to entering. They practiced good Covid protocol at first, but then I was enclosed in a small room with the doctor who did not wear a mask over his nose and he proceeded to ask me a series of odd, vaguely religious questions. Ultimately it felt as though he was testing my "faith" by putting me in a potentially deadly situation. I wish I had walked out immediately and I wish I had warned others earlier. So I been going to Dr. Lam since 2014. He is my and my family's optometrist even though I live in Ontario. Dr Lam and his staff are amazing. I just referred my co-workers and some of my patients (I work in a dental office) to go to him. So hopefully they take my advice and make an appointment at MPO Eyecare Optometry. I just started using Ortho K (Orthokeratology) it's hard contacts that you wear during the night while you sleep. It has been three days and I can see again without using my glasses!!! Yes it only took three days for me to be able to see again. Each person is different some take less than three days and some take more. But hey, Ortho K really works and I'm so thankful that Dr. Lam recommended the treatment to me. I'm just so happy!!!! read more

Service was okay when I purchased my glasses, but now the frame is coming apart and all they told me over a text message was there is nothing they could assist with. Their exact text: "Hello Robert this is MPO Eyecare. we received your message regarding your frame, there isnt any warranty on the frame since you opted out warranty at the time of purchase, please let me know if you would me to give you a price to replace the frame" I tried to call them on the phone but again could not reach anybody so I sent them another message and no response. **So it seems there is no manufacture's warranty on the frame. I find that pretty ridiculous in order to have a warranty on the frame it has to be purchased. This is the first time with anything that I have purchases where there is not a warranty unless purchased. For those of you in this same situation if the purchase was made by credit card then contact them and they may be able to assist. Many of them have warranties. I haven't even had the glasses for a year. I definitely would not recommend doing business with MPO. read more

I came here because I bought the Groupon "$39 for a complete eye exam and $150 towards frames" Walmart charges more for the eye exam alone, so I was interested. I called before buying the Groupon, because what if $150 doesn't cover it and I would have to pay out of pocket. They said that most frames range from $100 to $350. So I thought okay I'll just get the cheapest pair and the Groupon should cover it. *Groupon does not cover all cost* I made an appointment over the phone and they were nice to send me an email to remind me. I arrived and told them I have a Groupon. They asked me to sign in and I sat down. The receptionist asked when's the last time I got my pupils dilated and if it's been over a year she recommends I do it for an additional $15 charge. I declined. An assistant did the pretest and had me sign a form saying I declined the recommended eye test. I was taken to a room where the assistant asked if I ever tried contacts. I told her yes two years ago, but they weren't for me. She told me contacts have changed since then and told me I can get a $200 rebate if I get a year supply of contacts. I declined. Doctor came in. He was nice. He did a great vision test. He recommended I get the thinner lenses and the UV protection also. He left and a different assistant came once again asking if I wanted contacts. I declined. I was taken to the show room. The assistant told me that she'll bump up my $150 to $180 in store credit. So I was feeling lucky. Then she tells me the store credit only works for the frames, not the lenses. The cheapest frame was $130 then it jumps to $210, so the extra $30 credit she gave me only helped if I wanted an expensive pair of lenses. I went with the cheapest pair possible that I liked. The store credit covered it, but now the lenses. The cheapest lenses is $95 dollars. The doctor recommend UV protection which was an additional cost and thinner lenses another cost. I told the assistant I want the cheapest pair possible. I walked out paying $95 dollars. That is the cheapest you'll pay after spending the $39 on the Groupon. The assistant tried to sell me some insurance for $10 and some spray to clean the lenses for $5. I declined both. I left the store felling disappointed with the cost. I didn't think I would spend more than $50 on top on the Groupon price. I called a week later and they told me my glasses "just came in" and that they had to double check them and i should get them if I go around closing time. I called around closing time and they said they got a big shipment, but they'll be ready tomorrow morning. I called around 11am the following morning they were ready and I went to go pick them up. I would never come here or recommending anyone purchasing the Groupon unless they believe paying $140 is the best price for a vison test and the most basic of lenses. read more

I was referred by my friends to MPO to come see Dr.Lam for my dry eyes. Dr.Lam offered to do punctal plugs. I was hesitant, but Dr. Lam wasn't pushy about it and took his time to explain to me all the details. He offered the option of a temporary plug which was helpful to know I didn't have to commit to a permanent procedure. It was a small simple procedure and it helped alleviate my dry eye issues. Our whole family came here. It was ok until last year they no longer claim our insurance. They asked us to pay a higher amount than our insurance co-pay and said the lab will send us rebate in 2-3 weeks. Now already over 3 months. My husband called them 2 times, they said they will check with the lab, but up till now we still haven't received any rebate. It's $135 for 3 of us. Got their Groupon deal since I needed to update my pair of 2 year-old glasses. $39 for an eye exam and $125 credit for frame & lens. I had gone onto their website and saw that they have an online appointment system. It clearly states that you have to make an appointment 2 weeks ahead of time so book early. Call and ask questions because I called twice to get more info and the receptionist was helpful and gave me pretty straightforward answers. +1 star Their office is very modernized and cool-toned theme. I love their sink! Anyway I signed in, filled out forms, and then Maria did the front machine pre-tests on me. She explained what she was doing with each machine, which Golden sometimes neglects to do, and even have a machine that I've never seen before in my 9 years of going to an optometrist which takes a picture of the back of your eye. Thought that was pretty cool to see your eye looking healthy or whatnot. Then Dr. Lam did the eye exam, but showed me on the computer screen what my cornea is doing with the light entering my eye so he's not just putting out words for me to hear; he wants the patient to understand what's happening with their eyes. +3 stars After the eye exam was done, I went back out and picked out glasses. I was always frugal about getting glasses because I never wear them out. I wear them 10% of the time vs. 90% contacts. Why? Because I didn't really like how my glasses looked on me but it was just doing the minimum and letting me see at home at night. But that still cost money versus buying a better pair of glasses that I wouldn't mind wearing out with so I thought, "Why opt for something cheaper but something that doesn't look as appealing when you're going to be wearing it on your face and people are going to see?" If you wear the pair of glasses enough, you get your money's worth and helps you see. I cannot imagine not being able to see my surroundings clearly. Out of the human senses, I would think losing sight would be the worst, and if there are man-made things to help you see, why would you not use them... So this time was the first time I picked out a pair, not by price but how comfortable they were and how they looked on me, walked out paying a bit for the thinner lens plus an antiglare coat but still less than what I would pay for contacts at Golden. tldr; Overall experience was pretty good because I received help without asking every step of the way and I'm excited to get new glasses that I can go outside with. Called to schedule my appointment to renew my contacts a couple weeks in advance. This was my first visit to this office. The staff was very flexible with accommodating my schedule. When I got to the office, there was miscommunication regarding my insurance and copay costs but the staff was very patient and understanding so they were able to explain the details to me. The office is very clean, always a good sign to me when it comes to health care facilities. The exam itself was pretty quick. Luckily, I had nothing crazy going on with my eyes so everything went pretty smoothly. Dr. Lam was pleasant. We went on with figuring out how my insurance and contacts and glasses would work. They were able to offer me a good deal with my eye glass lense replacement and I used my insurance to take care of my contact lenses. My whole visit took a little less than an hour. Had to switch optometry due to personal reasons and I'm glad that I came to this location first. First off, the whole staff team is super friendly. I'm talking about everyone like Robert, Kim, Kassandra, and even the optometrist Dr. Lam. I've always been dealing with emotionless workers however they are really something else. I've even gotten life advices from a few of them, haha. When it comes to prices, they really do vary. I would highly recommend taking on the extra costs if the benefits really do suit you. Dr. Lam was super helpful, friendly and informative. The process to check my eyes for my prescription was quick and easy. However, because I paid with a LivingSocial deal, I had only around 6-7 free glasses frames for me to choose from. If I wanted other kinds, it would be $20 more. Considering the LivingSocial deal I paid for was already $60 bucks, I just chose a pair of glasses from the free pile. On top of that I didn't realize I had to pay for the lens as well. I had thought it was part of the deal. NOPE. I paid $75 for my lens alone. They had told me they would contact me when my glasses came in. Almost a month goes by and I was wondering where my glasses were and thought maybe they forgot to to call me. So I took it upon myself to call them and they told me it should be in the next day. Went in and got my glasses the next day. At my other optometrist, it only took around 2 weeks for my glasses to be shipped. I don't plan on going back to this place. read more

Looked like a nice private optometry, but I took courteous greeting and time efficiency way over for granted. I found them through those on-line deals; good price minus hidden $20 for eye dilation. Acceptable. It's still cheaper than other places I suppose. Entering the office was not accompanied by smiles or greetings, unless you find 'how can I help you' welcoming. Ok ok, warm welcomes aren't mandatory, but sticking to the appointment time is. I got there early, and I'm still waiting during the time my app was supposed to start. The final straw that broke the camel's back: when I asked them how much longer it would be, fifteen minutes into my actual appointment, I am answered with a slight, hesitant giggle, followed by, " oh were a little behind schedule there's still one more person'...AND?....wait time?...'about 40 minutes.. he didn't even tell me that when my app should have started. This is actually a new optometrist that took over the office. This office use to be operated by Dr Joseph Peek. Unfortunately, when I came back, I saw a brand new staff and was informed Dr. Peek passed away. I was really devastated as Dr. Peek was my optometrist for over 7 years and his entire staff knew me. The new doctor and staff that took over is okay. They are extremely professional. BUT, being professional comes with a draw back. They are very strict on a lot of things. Before Dr. Peek's staff would let me bargain my prices and also throw in a bunch of free stuff, free contact lenses (trial pairs), boxes of sample contact solutions, and lens cases, etc. They would also price match contact prices online. With the new team, I felt they we too professional and less Asian style. Can't cut too much corners and bargain with them. I came in for a contact lens and eye glass exam. Good thing I recently got a job that had really good vision insurance. They said my insurance covers the exam. Great! I would just need to pay a $10 co-pay. Not bad I guess. I went through the exam, the new doctor was very helpful and answered all my questions. I felt I wasn't being rushed. However after my exam, they charged me a $40 contact lens fitting fee. I felt kind of ripped off. Dr. Peek never charged me that. I didn't feel like arguing with them as I had already went through the entire exam. So I coughed up the extra $40 on top of my co-pay and subsidized vision insurance. I felt cheated because they never mentioned to me the $40 fitting fee. I would have went to another Asian eye doctor that waived the fee. C'mon! we're in Monterey Park not Beverly Hills! If this happened to my mom she would raise hell on the office. Pricing on contacts. They told me that my insurance would only cover $150 for my yearly contact lenses and that with my lenses, I would need to pay an extra $50 as a year's supply cost $200. I told them I'll let them know and went home to do some research. In the end, I found an online retailer that sold my contacts for $120 for a yearly supply! Wow they were overcharging by $80. I went ahead and placed the order online and the retailer was in my insurance policy so they would just claim it with the insurance. A couple days later, the online retailer called me back and told me that my claim for materials (contacts) has already been taken! WHAT?! I called my insurance and they told me that Monterey Park Optometry filed a claim for it already. OMG! I told them what happened and my insurance had to call Monterey Park optometry to get my claim back. Finally after straightening it out, the online retailer was able to file a claim on my $120 yearly supply and it came to me in the mail in a week. No money out of my pocket! Beware of 2 things with this office. 1. $40 contact lens fee 2. Buy all your contacts online. They are wayyy cheaper! Request a prescription from them after your exam. By law, they have to give you a copy. After years of going to Dr. Peek, I'm going to look else where for affordable optometrist that won't overcharge and cheat me out of my money. read more

In response to the owner's comment .... The office never explained to the patient that once the progressive lenses were processed that they could not be refunded. Had he known that, he would not have went for them and opted for just the single vision lenses. The office kept pushing on selling the most expensive lenses without regard to what was best for the patient. The patient also never received any voicemails or messages and he called the office numerous times to no avail. The reason I had to intervene was because it was my credit card that was used. Every time the patient went into the office to discuss the new lenses they would say nothing about the "credit" and would insist on pushing another product. I don't want a full refund of the glasses, just on the difference of the progressive lenses to the single vision lenses. The patient does not want contacts, or anything else from their offices. He said they tried to fit him for contact lenses but he was not comfortable with them and just wanted the single vision lenses. The office still insisted on selling yet ANOTHER product. All I want is the difference refunded back to my credit card, since I was present and I was NOT explained their policy. I did not sign such a waiver. I love how the office is still INSISTING on us spending more money there and using their "store credit". That alone is bad business practice. Also notice how they have filtered out numerous 1-star reviews. I'm pretty sure mine will get filtered out in due time. Businesses like this will eventually fade out on their own.
