We've been going to them for a couple years. Twice have had issues - one serious and one not - that were identified and treatment plan established. They are thorough, wait time on arrival is low, staff is helpful, and it's a good experience every time. They take insurance (we don't have it) and it's nice to have a place to go for annual exams and such. We drive from downtown LA - we're that impressed. read more

Set an appointment for an eye check up for $59 at Costco Alhambra with Dr. Cary Tseng. I was checked in quickly but the whole procedure done by the optometrist was even quicker. There was no question about his knowledge but the approach I received was a little confusing. I felt rushed by every step Dr. Tseng instructed me to do. In about 2-3 seconds I was expected to respond to each question along with the visual apparatus he used. I wish he modifies that fast technique that is not always helpful to many. read more

I am writing this review specifically for Gisselly the assistant who works at the front desk of the optometrist office. I have a 9 year old son who is afraid of the little puffs of air that they do during your check ups. Ms. Gisselly was so patient with my son and was even talking to him about "Among Us" (his favorite video game) to calm him down. She was absolutely amazing at keeping my son calm, and entertained to make him forget his fears. I am very great full for Ms. Gisselly for taking the time, with a booked appointment book to make my son comfortable. Ms. Gisselly needs a raise and promotion. I've been seeing Dr. Tseng for years. Today I was very surprised by his impatience with me. I told him I wasn't seeing clearly from the recent eyeglass and contact lenses prescription. He checked then pulled up my prescription from 4 years ago (even though I have a prescription from them for 2020,2021 and now 2022) and compared it. He tried the prescription from 4 years ago and it was not right, my prescription had changed in 2021 since 2019. He was very impatient and at times sarcastic with his replies telling me after 40, I need to settle for the best of the worst. I asked to try a different brand of contact for trial lenses and he flat out said no. I told him years ago that brand wasn't good but the brand I currently have seems worse. He refused to let me try it as a trial. Instead, I just have to buy a whole years worth of the brand he prescribed even though it's not clear on one side. He wouldn't even try just so I can see if it would be better. My eyeglasses prescription are not good either. He said I could either do my prescription from 4 years ago (even though my 2021 prescription with him is different) or I can stick with the one they just gave me which is very very hard to adjust to. Not sure why I couldn't do the prescription from 2021. Really disappointed and each year, I can see he's worn out by the job. Every year, he's faster, spends less time and rushes through everything. This year, his impatience borderlines on sarcastic rudeness. I use to really like going to him but I'm saddened he doesn't have time or patience for his patients anymore. I used my insurance (which I pay monthly for) and paid $300 for glasses...none of them worked out and they don't accept exchanges at the opticals. I had horrible experience with the optometrist named, Michelle Stephens. I get my contacts lens prescription here for 5 years. Dr. Tseng and another young long hair optometrists always take good care of me. Until I met Michelle Stephens on 01/20/2020. Listed the terrible experience with her below. 1. Bad attitude, no greeting and rush me to leave the room. She looked at me so unfriendly even when she came to the front to tAke me to the room. 2. Trying to make me pay for the glasses prescription which I don't need for my current situation. At the beginning of the appointment, I told her my right eye had retinal surgery done two months ago and my ophthalmologist suggested me get new contact prescription for it. And now my left and right eye have huge differences of sphere. Therefore wearing glasses will make me feel dizzy. However at the middle of the appointment she tries to make me get both the glasses prescription and the contacts one which sounds supper unknowledgeable. 3 the worst thing is she wrote the wrong sphere for my right eye on the prescription ( see photo attached). I went there specific for my right eye contact prescription. For what reason!!! She wrote sphere +100 for the right eye and -10.25 for the left eye. As I want to try the trail first so I didn't order any contacts at Costco that day. I notice this issue the next day. I make another trip there to get a new prescription with another optometrist. Because I m completely not comfortable with this wrong prescription and this ridiculous woman. I finally found out the correct sphere for my right eye is +1.00. To Michelle Stephens: are you really a optometrist? I report this to the owner, Dr Tseng. He was nice as usual and trying to find a way fix this bad experience. But I told him I would not go there anymore because this is unacceptable. Hope he will talk to Michelle Stephens and hope this Doesn't happen to any other patient who has her as optometrist. Last but not least, I totally agree with all the other reviews about the front desk. They are not only rude but also discriminator. I was the first walked in patient on that day. They check in a walked in patient arrived later than me, literally, in front of me, while I was siting on the high chair near the front desk. Try to go early! Like right when it opens! This is the most crowded Costco on Earth, so be mentally prepared. I've always just walked in, and never waited too long. Front desk is always very warm and friendly. If you've been here before, your info is on file and the check-in process is really quick. I've had other optometrists before at this office, but Dr. Cary Tseng is the best! So experienced and nice. The contacts eye exam was really fast and the OD explained everything along the way. I don't know about you, but this office employs the nicest OD's, I swear all of them have the most soothing voices. I go here because my old Kaiser optometrist said it's actually cheaper out of pocket to go to Costco and to buy your contacts there too, in the optical department. read more

I developed weak eye muscles during past two years and my left eye drifts about 15 degrees outwards. The result is two images of one car lane, especifally when I am tired, making driving difficult unless I use only either one of the two eyes. Two optometrists and three ophthalmologists later and not getting a correct diagnosis for correction but tons of other tests instead, no problems were found. Dr Tseng listened to my problems, did several proper tests for weak eye muscles, and confidently prescribed adding "prism" to my eye glasses prescription. Bingo! My eyes went back to the good old days like magic. I feel I got my life back! Thank you Dr. Tseng! The modest Dr. said this is all in his day's work, and that he can make the diagnosis because of so many years of experience. read more

This is my first time at the Costco Alhambra Optometry. I have pretty bad eyesight and I wear both contact lenses and glasses. My glasses were over 3 years old, so I finally decided to get an eye glass exam. I never really expect much from the Optometrists at Costco because they all seem to just "do their job". Dr. Cary Tseng however was very nice, professional, and friendly. I don't think I have ever been so comfortable at an optometry. Definitely coming when I need updated eye exams. Wearing glasses for all my life. Around age 26 I wanted to try contacts. Dr. Tseng helped me out. (Honesty I'm not sure if it was Dr. Tseng. There was an attractive lady-optometrist who helped me out.) She helped me but didn't introduce herself and I saw the degree of "Dr. Tseng" So she will now henceforth be known as Dr. Tseng! She checked out my eyeballs for diseases which were none. She told me I had some football eyes called astigmatism. I was like Yeah! Sports! Football! Then I asked a bunch of questions like: "What's an astigmatism? Will it kill me?" Of course she did her optometry job well cause she put me to ease. On to contacts. Again, it was my first time so I told her my impression of contact lenses. I told her I was worried that the glass might cut my eye and blah blah blah. Again, of course, she did her optometry job well cause she put me to ease. Total cost was about 120$ for a regular glasses and contact lens prescription and it came with 1 month free lens and solution. I got to go back and get more lenses. Downside. It's not as personable as I would like it to be. I'd like to know my doctors and call them up when I'm having girlfriend troubles like how they do on T.V. read more

They say your eyes are the windows to your soul, so why not take care of it? My bf had finally decided to get his eyes checked out after 10 years because he was tired of my nagging. So we made an appointment at Costco for the next available time. They also accepted walk-ins as well. My bf wanted both contacts and glasses, so he got the $89 eye exam, which examined for both. I thought it was a good deal since the examination for the eye glasses alone was $49. The optometrist and the receptionist were super nice and friendly. They allowed me go into the examination room with my bf to keep him company. I really liked their fast service, We were in and out in about 15 minutes or less. They gave my bf a free pair of Acuvue Oasys contact lens that would be good for 2 weeks and a bottle of contact lens solution. Its was a great experience for my bf and he was definitely glad that he came here because now he could see things a lot clearer. Overall, I would recommend Dr. Cary Tseng Optometry to everyone. Note: For good eye health, It is highly recommended that you get your eyes checked out every 2 years. read more

Dr. Tseng is the best. Very humble and down to earth, but more importantly he is a great optometrist. I was nervous when I realized that my prescription had expired and I was low on contacts after Covid had gotten serious, but he got me in the same day for a quick appointment. My profession requires a lot of reading and for awhile I had been getting headaches at the end of the day. When I told Dr. Tseng he dialed down my prescription just slightly enough that I still have perfect vision with my contacts but reading is easier on my eyes. I do not know the science behind this but it made a huge difference. Also, Dr. Tseng recommended a different brand of eye drops (Blink for contacts) to drop into my contacts in the morning when putting them on. I used to always have dry eyes throughout the day but not since doing this. The drops he recommended were even less expensive than the previous ones I used. I have seen different optometrists in the past but will be sticking with Dr. Tseng as long as I'm local. I am very grateful for and recommend him regardless of whatever problems people have had with his staff. He is worth it. read more

I never want to write a bad review about a business but this is probably one of the worst eye exam office I have ever been to. We been here twice, first time the doctor rush my mom. Didn't wanna really listen to her concern, just wanted to get her in and out as fast as possible. So when we went to get the glasses made, the prescription was wrong, we went back to get it fix again. Again, they didn't seem like they cared and was very quick to rush us in and out. Even though we told them the first prescription was wrong. Then when we went again to get the glasses remade, the prescription was wrong again. When we called in, the person answering the phone was super rude and didn't care. So if you ever wanted to be treat like a number and want to get your eye check multiple times, you can come here. I didnt have an appt scheduled. I just had a few quesions. Technically thrblocation didnt close until 630pm today. I knocked on the window twice to ask a question. The optical technician ignored me twice. Thankfully a gentleman in line understood my frustration and since they were technically open (it was 615pm when this happened) he opened the sliding door and asked my question for me because he didnt think it was right for her to not at least acknowledge me and hear my question. Extremely rude technician. Please reconsider who you have on staff, especially duiring times like this. I am very disappointed today by Cary Tseng, OD. Been seeing him at Costco for years, not sure why he was very impatient to me today, he was very rude and even repeatedly said: No More Talking. I was all like what?? I was just trying to address how my vision was due to a bit confusing prescription for my contact lens, he shouldn't even wrote a prescription on my reading glasses on my contact prescription if he already adjusted and did the math for my contact lenses prescription, plus I am not a doctor and I didn't see why I couldn't say anything or ask anything, he was the one who asked me to try the trial contact lenses and came back if I felt discomfort, and I even said sorry when I came back, even though he was the one who should apologize because he gave me a wrong contact lenses prescription, and It was NOT free trials because we all need to pay more for the contact lenses prescription at Costco at my visit couple days ago. He really shouldn't treat a patient like that. He should listen first even though he might know what I was about to say, and even though he already knew the solution. read more

Let me start off by saying Dr. Tseng was awesome. However, the receptionist not so much. Dr. Tseng transferred me to the receptionist in which I told the guy that I had insurance. After verifying my insurance and specifying my appointment time, I went in and thought all was cool. Nope. After the exam I was billed the full exam amount. I paid thinking nothing of it since I thought my insurance was applied against it but after visiting costco at night to buy something on another day and seeing the pricing of the exam it dawned on me that I was overcharged. Dumb of me I should have verified but I didn't think that I would have to since costco stores normally double check everything. I guess it's not the same for the optometry stores inside costco. I was going to recommend people here but after this receptionist's inability to keep the information of people who are coming in for an appointment (like bringing up the fact that they have insurance and even verifying with last four digits of social/birth date/etc), I'm just hesitant on what this guy might fail to do next. FYI: He was a hispanic male, slightly heavy set. Because of this guys mistake, I now have to go through the hassle of dealing with my insurance company for a reimbursement. Thank you for the troubles you... I like the fact that after I called the receptionist (I recognized his voice), that he pinpointed that I didn't tell the receptionist I had insurance when I came in. *claps*. Short Version: The slightly cheaper prices are not worth the long wait, and the fact that they hurry to accommodate all the people crammed in the tiny waiting room. That also applies to the Costco Vision Center next door, where you will probably go to fill your prescription. You only save about $10-15, but you wait an hour, hour-and-a-half more than you would anywhere else. In way more uncomfortable conditions! Long Version: I had to spend $700 and go back to this location FOUR times in 7 months in order to get a simple correct contact lens and glasses prescription. During 5 of those months, I experienced constant blurriness, and had to strain to make out the words on signs. It was a nightmare. I kept telling Dr. Tseng that I felt that I wasn't seeing clearly, and that my eyes constantly felt like they were straining. He would peer at my eyes with a flashlight and announce: "You're fine!" The first time he did that, I actually asked, incredulous: "How can you tell?" In my 19 years of wearing contacts, I've never had an optometrist check my prescription so quickly. He was actually kind of offended, and told me that it was his job to know. As I've heard him do to many other clients while sitting and waiting, he switched me to Cooper Vision contact lenses and sent me on my way. The second time I returned, I felt kind of stupid. So I asked the techs at the desk to check my vision, to see if I even needed to see the doctor. They did the eye chart and told me I was seeing at 20/30 with my contact lenses in. Darn. I put my name down and waited the usual hour. But when I saw Dr. Tseng, he didn't even administer the eye chart test. Again with the flashlight, peering into my eye, and declaring me fine. He said I was seeing 20/20. I told him about the techs and asked why they would say 20/30. He said: "Your lenses are probably dirty." Which is weird, because then his results shouldn't be 20/20, right? He asked me what cleaning solution I use. I told him Clear Care. He then said, "That's good. Keep using that." Again, so weird. If Clear Care works, shouldn't my lens not be so dirty that they take me down to 20/30? This time, he switches me to Cooper Vision monthlies. I now know that switching brands helps with things like dry eye or comfort. Not blurriness, eye strain, and headaches. Also, monthlies is a bad thing to recommend to someone who is experiencing problems. Because you waste so much of the contact lens if it doesn't work out for you early on. Fast forward two more months. By now, I have headaches and nausea when I try to read. I can't even Facebook or Yelp! I am starting to question my sanity because I can't see clearly, but the doctor said I was fine. I feel like a senior citizen, bc I often have trouble reading signs. I don't feel safe driving, bc my vision is wonky. So I go back again. I make an appt for a full exam from the other doctor in the office. (Still waited 45 min). She finds that my prescription is off by -0.25. She showed me the before and after difference. Definitely blurry. No wonder I was struggling. And no wonder I thought I was going crazy! I specifically waited on buying glasses because I wanted to be sure that the prescription they gave me was right for me. When I went to Dr. Tseng the first time complaining of having trouble seeing, and he so confidently said that my prescription was fine, I believed him and bought glasses. It will cost me at least $300 to fix everything to my new, correct prescription. That's $700 in a year for a simple thing. When I explained to him the entire situation, he did not apologize. At first, he tried to point to his "testing" results and say that I was 20/20 when he checked me the last two times. Sure, because he performed a shoddy job and just put me down as that. Then he actually had the nerve to say: "It's -0.25 difference! -0.25 is NOTHING to us!" The best he can do? He offered me $10 off the exam that finally put my prescription to rights. When I said that was not enough to compensate me for everything, he told me he was not releasing my new prescription, and to find a new provider. Wow. When you put your vision into an optometrist's hands, you're not looking for "almost there," or "close enough." You're looking for as close a fit as they can get. If you agree that "close enough" isn't good enough for your eyes and your quality of life, Dr. Tseng isn't the optometrist for you. Save your time and money and go to an optometrist who has the time and space to treat you right, and the professional integrity to apologize and make amends when serious mistakes have been made. P.S. - Some of the other happy reviewers seem like NOOBS. Explaining the difference between monthlies & dailies isn't "above and beyond"! That's a routine part of an optometrist's JOB. Free contact case & solution? You'll get that ANYWHERE. No offense, but those aren't reasons to choose an optometrist. read more

I could not wear my contacts due to my eyes being itchy from allergies. My last pair of prescription glasses were about 3 years old and it was the worst timing ever, no one was taking appointments unless it was "emergent" because of social distancing. I made an appointment before coming in and that really helped speed things along! They took my call and got me an appointment the next day. Dr.Cary was very clean and took care of my eye exam in a jiffy. He also had a very reasonable price! Sure enough, when I got my glasses, I was like.. dude it feels like I'm cross eyed. My depth perception was messed up. But they said give it a week. I did- still way strong. I went back in. Luckily, different doctor. Luckily, the MAIN doctor. Luckily, Dr. Cary. He's like.. whoa, she made your prescription way too strong.. He retested me. I don't think I've ever felt more comfortable at an optician's office. Dr. Tseng is nice and professional. He also went above and beyond and explained the difference between daily contacts and monthlies. I never knew. Now I'll prolly wear monthlies. It's also way cheaper. It was actually an ophthalmologist who suggested I wear dailies. But Dr. Tseng's explained that dailies are not made for comfort. They are made more "cheaply" and therefore are not made for comfort. Monthlies are designed for comfort, etc, etc. Really appreciated he took the time to explain vs. just telling me that monthlies are more comfortable. He's also very quick to smile/laugh and make you feel like a friend rather than a patient all the while being professional, of course. read more

My eyes were burning, my last pair of contacts were going on fumes, I was in danger of having to play basketball in my glasses like George Mikan. With all due respect to the great Laker, my idea of retro style is more like wearing a pair of old sneakers. I called up Dr. Tseng's office and the doc himself answered. Asked him if I can do a walk-in ASAP and he said, "Sure, we're here til 6." Snuck into the premise thru the merch return door (no Costco membership) and walked out in less than 40 minutes with a new pair of sample lens in eyeballs and a new prescription in hand. $89 for regular script, $99 for astigmatism script. They take plastic and straight up cash-money homie, no insurance. Dr. Tseng wrote my very first prescription more than 10 years ago. I stopped going to him during the experimental years, some would call those college years. Let me start by saying that I have been going to another large zoo of an eye doctor in Pasadena for the last three years. I'm always there for 2-3 hours. I walked into Dr. Tseng's office and was getting my eye exam within 10 minutes...and that's without an appointment. The worst part of this was finding parking at Costco. Dr. Tseng was quick and thorough. He gave me good advice to take care of my dry eyes and his front desk girls are really cool too.
