My amazing decorator, who I have had the pleasure of working with for 13 years, and I walked into Lewis without an appointment. There were no issues of not having an appointment and we were quickly greeted by Michelle who helped us find the perfect marble floors and quartzite countertops. Between my decorator and Michelle we got the job done in no time and I left even more excited about my soon to be amazing bathrooms. It felt like we became fast friends with Michelle too and we even said we would all love to hang out socially! I've been to many stores for flooring and counters thru the years, but seem to have great luck at Lewis. First of all, you now have to have an appointment to see tile/carpet. You cannot just walk in. I know when I want to look at tile, it's not something I think about. I just go. However, the customer service is good once you get there for your appointment. That is where the good ends. I was there to renovate just a 3 X3 shower. I had purchased tile there for a bathroom/shower a few years back and where the water hit on the tile, the color of the tile wore off. Never had that happen and the whole bathroom is tiled with the same time floor to ceiling and no issues (the whole bathroom is about 20 feet by 15 feet. I had the estimator come (after paying $100), and the estimate came back around $7000. This was a bit high for a 3X3 shower but was willing to entertain the price however the caveats on the estimate: I had to get my own people to remove the shower doors and they claimed (and wrote this in), they were not responsible for the granite shower curb or the granite shelving. Not only were they not responsible, they offered no solutions if they did break it.....even at a cost. What good would a shower be without the curb to keep the water in, (not to mention the doors would no longer work), or shelves to put items such as soap/shampoo? So basically threw away $100 because if they take no responsibility for what they do, it's a good gimmick they got going on. Take my money and give nothing in return. So don't use this place as they are not a full service installation tile company!! read more

We had three rooms, hall, and stairs carpeted. They put an unsightly seam down the center of the master bedroom. All you see is the seam. They came to flatten it twice. They carpeted our Murphy bed into the wall and we were unable to open it and has no bed for our company to sleep in. They were sorry about that. Our opinion is that their craftmenship as far as installation was beyond poor. Their follow up was fine, but we spent over $7,000 on carpet and have to replace it, it looks so awful. When their technician was at our home, we said it look poorly. Now we have to have it replaced. All this took months for follow up. We would NEVER use or recommend this company. read more

I'm giving two stars because the showroom is large and pleasant and the process to check out samples was easy. Everything else about my experience was 1 star or less. Lewis requires/requests an appointment to get into their showroom. I dutifully made mine and organized my day around it so as to be prompt. I was, of course, kept waiting over 20 minutes as my salesperson helped another customer. When I asked if someone else could help me, I was told I could look around the showroom by myself as I waited for my salesperson. What exactly is the purpose of an appointment? Isn't looking around a showroom by yourself and waiting for a salesperson what you do in establishments without an appointment policy? Strike one! My salesperson was Victor. I was not impressed with his familiarity with the carpet selection. I took a sample of carpet I wanted to match as to pile height and density. I also took a paint sample that I wanted to match as to color. It took him close to an hour to find what I was looking for. Many years ago I went to Lewis for carpeting and took a sample of wallpaper to color match. At that time it took the salesperson less than 5 minutes to find several options. I took some samples home and returned them which was easy (see above). I called Victor and scheduled a measure ($100) which was also easy. The measure guy showed up at approximately the agreed time. So far things were improving. Then everything took a huge nose dive. I received the estimate and it was ludicrously high. It called for close to 50% more carpet than necessary. When I called Victor, he said that was the cost. No effort to work with me. I asked for a quote for a reduced amount of carpet, no pad, without installation, without removal. Just the carpet. He did not send it. I contacted him again. He finally sent it but it still called for the extra 50% of carpet, the padding, and the removal. He deducted $200 for installation. I contacted him twice more. Once I called to discuss binding options. He effectively hung up on me, announcing mid-conversation that he "had to go." He never called back. Strike 2. I emailed him again and asked for a revised estimate for less carpet, no padding, no removal, and I would pick it up. No response. I waited 17 days. Strike 3. Finally I emailed him again explaining my dissatisfaction. No response, no surprise. I have purchased both carpet and countertops from Lewis in the past. No more. The service is abysmal if not downright insulting. I purchased the carpet I wanted for less than 1/2 what Lewis wanted with one phone call. My advice is to shop elsewhere. read more

Because nothing ever quite goes as planned, it's important to work with a company that will be flexible and help you and want you to be happy--throughout the remodel process. Here's what to know about our experience with Lewis. Products are sold final sale. If it comes in and you're not happy (even if the order is still on site at Lewis in boxes and could be easily returned), you're out of luck. Lewis will do nothing to help you. Here's what to know about buying tile: 1. No matter how many pieces they show you (of the same tile in the store), when yours shows up, it could look quite different and have tons of variation. (This wasn't mentioned to us even though later, when we were upset, they said that it was mentioned.) 2. Ask first what happens if the product comes in and you're not pleased. For us, it was "MERCHANDISE IS NOT RETURNABLE." And they weren't nice about it at all when escalated. My mom was going to buy much more here for her total remodel, but after the first two bad experiences with the product that came in and the attitude with which her concerns were treated, she chose to take her business to A-American (on Caldwell in Niles), where they have absolutely bent over backwards to be helpful at all stages of the process. Lewis has a lovely store, a great selection and seemed very helpful before purchase, but ultimately, once you've placed your order and paid, we found that Lewis was no longer concerned with whether or not we were happy. read more

As a returning customer I expected Lewis Floor & Home would be a top choice of material and workmanship for the redo of my living room and den. I chose Lewis knowing the cost would be higher than one of others in the field because I thought I would be getting a superior experience. Wrong. I could have saved myself dollars as well as aggravation by going elsewhere. While initially a pleasure to work with both the carpet and window treatment departments, once the order was placed things started to go down hill. Due to the pandemic a certain amount of delay was taken into consideration but periodic calls to ensure things were in the works would have been appreciated. Instead I had to call to get updates on expected deliveries of both the carpeting and window treatments. The installation of carpet resulted in a blatant and unattractive, very obvious seam running the length of the living room. Of the seven Hunter Douglas window blinds ordered, three were made incorrectly and what was already a lengthy wait, was protracted by another month with lopsided half done window treatments up, not the least bit attractive or acceptable. No compensation for inconvenience was offered. Workmen sent out to address the carpet seam issue were incompetent to say the least and did not lessen the obvious fault. After briefly pounding along the edge with a hammer while grumbling that "it is what it is" the two bumbling workmen called it a day and I am now left to live with an unacceptable result after a $6,000 outlay. After waiting for over two months for the window treatments to come, the installer tried his best to repair one of the seven window blinds, spending an hour extra of his time but finally giving up and adding that to be reordered along with the two others that were poorly manufactured, resulting in yet another wait of over a month. All in all, not the professional high level of material or service I had anticipated. An overall disappointment in Lewis Carpet & Home and I unfortunately would not recommend this company. read more

Wants full payment prior to completion, claiming COVID-19 They're nice and have a lot of samples on display. The person to whom we were assigned frequently never called us back. But the real issues are financial. 1. We found the exact same carpet at Toms Price for 50cents/foot less 2. We still decided to stay with Lewis, but they insisted on full payment several days before installation. They told me item 3 was a new rule instituted in March due to COVID-19. Did they think I was going to die on them? They said it's no different than ordering an applicance from Abt, but the difference here is that installation is a service. It makes it impossible to complain about issues like incorrect measuring on their part or poor installation. Did you ever have to prepay 100% for a painter or a dentist. Simple fact --it's greed here. Thankfully, installation was well done but the new carpet has a non-matching seam in the middle of the floor. Not sure what to do about it, but next time I'll go elsewhere. I don't need what I consider to be COVID opportunists. read more

I had a bad experience with getting an estimate for carpeting from a salesperson who never got back to me after I sent her multiple emails with the information she was requesting in order to get a quote. When I called back the next day, they said it was her day off. They then asked another salesperson to help me who was honest and said she was inexperienced and I should talk to the manager. The manager calls back and says that they don't do the work that I was waiting for the quote on. And he did not sound apologetic, more annoyed. So 3 days wasted. I could have called another company, but after having a good experience with them a few years ago, I thought I would get better service. read more

She was very patient as I took a long time to decide which carpet I wanted. She gave me some great options, checked on alternatives and pricing. As a home remodeling professional I worked with many tile vendors, I am almost left speechless in the manner through which Lewis Floor & Home has failed to stand behind the "high-end" product that they sell. On their invoice it states "NO RETURNS" for the sole reason they know you are over paying for a product that is so poorly made and so horribly painful to work with that you will be demanding your money back upon opening the first box of tiles. My advice to any fellow contractor, designer, design studio, or homeowner...be aware of their inability to take full ownership of the product that they sell. This place has the potential to be fantastic. Unfortunately, their customer service leaves a little to be desired. We went here because our contractor recommended them and he gave us the name of a specific person. Unfortunately, that person wasn't working the day we were there, so we talked to another guy. He pointed us in the general direction of the kind of tile we wanted (simple subway tile) and then left us to find it on our own. Once we found what we wanted, he wrote down all of the information and gave us the quote. We went ahead and ordered because the prices seemed reasonable and he told us the tile would be in by the following weekend. Great! The salesman even researched prices on some other tile we were thinking about, but the prices were much higher than we had seen elsewhere. A couple of days later, the salesman emailed to say the tile was backordered for a couple of weeks and he'd let me know if it looked like it was going to arrive sooner than that. OK, fine, we could work with that. But, two days after the back order date, when I still hadn't heard whether our tile was in, I called. Turns out, the tile still had not arrived, and I had to wait until the following day to talk with the manager and find out when my tile would be there. Thankfully, the manager found the tile and it was ready for me to pick up in time before the contractor started work (a week late - we had to push the start date back because of the back ordered tile). The tile selection is quite large and they have some good stuff. It's just too bad they couldn't communicate better or take more initiative on following up on orders. Otherwise, I'd recommend this place more highly. read more

Lewis doesn't stand by their quotes or contracts. I receive a quote for my basement, paid a deposit for the basement and decided to have them quote my bedroom as the carpet I selected was on sale. I received a follow-up quote in an email that stated "here is the new contract with everything included." The new contract stated Lewis was going to carpet the basement, stairs, landing and my bedroom, the square footage and price both increased proportionally and diagrams of both the basement, bedroom and stairs with landing were all included in this new contract as well. I was told they would charge me the difference between the old and new quote to bring the deposit to their required 50%. I schedule the install and Lewis charged the balance of the new contract. The day of the install Sharon, the customer service manager, calls to inform me that they made a mistake and the basement carpeting was not ordered nor included in the pricing of the second, more expensive quote. When pointed out that I made my decision based on their quote and we had a signed contract Sharon questioned my morals and asked how I slept at night knowing I was stealing from a family owned business. When I asked about the morality of not standing behind their word and contract I was told they made a mistake and I had to pay for it. We went back and forth with Sharon offering to split the difference in the cost they claim was omitted from the revised contract but I felt we had a deal and a signed contract that they should stand behind. Additionally, when I asked Sharon to show me the error as the contract detailed what was included with the corresponding diagrams she replied she didn't know and to trust her. I ended up selecting an in stock carpet to be installed 2 days later and Sharon finally agreed to have it installed per the terms of our signed contract with no extra charge to me. The next day I receive a call from Sharon stating she talked to Djuro the General Manager of the store and the deal she agreed to the day before was off and I had to pay the installation charge of over $900 to Lewis to carpet my basement. I ended up speaking to both Djuro and Sharon where Sharon once again questioned my morals and Djuro told me I should have known the contract was wrong, despite the extremely clear representation made by Lewis stating the quote and contract was for everything. In the end Djuro agreed to cover the cost of the installation and in exchange I was asked never to shop at Lewis again. Considering the atrocious customer service I just experienced never going back was a decision I had already made. In the end don't expect Lewis to stand by a quote or contract, you as the consumer have to know when they, the carpeting professionals, claim to have made mistake. read more

Lawrence Lambert did a wonderful job designing my new kitchen. It is gorgeous and I get a lot of compliments on it. He also connected me to various other contractors (plumbing, painting, electric, etc.) that I hired for the overall project. I also really appreciated his helping me troubleshoot various other items. However, the back-end of Lewis (quoting, ordering, scheduling) was very frustrating. And since Lawrence no longer works for Lewis, I would not recommend them. read more

I used Lewis to install a runner on my stairs and was really impressed with the selection and customer service - that is, until my contact neglected to tell me that the carpet I had selected was actually backordered, and wouldn't be available for another month. This was upsetting because I was nine months pregnant, and part of my "signing on the dotted line" was operating under the assumption that the installation could happen before my due date. Regardless, I went ahead with the backordered carpet and was really pleased with the result. The carpet is plush and looks great in the space; I really couldn't be happier. The price was affordable (somewhere in the $800 mark) and the whole experience was so easy that I decided to return to Lewis when shopping around for a kitchen backsplash. This time, I requested someone with an eye for design, since this was a bigger decision and I am no interior designer. I ended up working with two women, Joanna and Teri, and both were so great. I brought in a picture of my kitchen, and they pulled out a square of my kitchen granite (they have a whole cabinet filled with different granite samples to aid backsplash selection) and we were able to narrow it down to a ceramic subway tile with a herringbone pattern above the stove. I am so pleased with the end design - it was exactly what I was looking for when I didn't know what I was looking for (if that makes any sense). Again, the price was really reasonable at around $700 (bear in mind I have a very small kitchen!) Unfortunately, the experience hasn't been totally seamless, because I am still awaiting a call from the installation department. I am on a bit of a time crunch (returning back to work after a maternity leave) and have asked several different times to at least put a date in the books for installation. It definitely seems to be a pattern that their customer service is great until they get your credit card number...and then not so much. Assuming the end product is good, as it was with my stair runner, I would still recommend Lewis Floor and Home for carpet and backsplash. Nevertheless, be aware that the whole process may start to lag towards the end. read more

Once you get a verbal quote be sure to add an additional 25%. My wife and I worked with Larry for a set of built-in custom cabinets. We are very happy with the end result. The cabinets are high quality and look great. Larry made himself available for questions and to address the few issues we had. The installer was an excellent carpenter and constantly cleaned up as he went. It did take some time to get thru the initial steps of design and agreement on a contract due to a few electronic communication issues. I'll start this out positive as I did not have a great experience and would not recommend them to anyone. First, Lewis does have a large assortment of product to choose from and can be a one stop shop, carpet, tile, counters, etc.. After many places I looked although more expensive at I decided on Lewis for my porcelain floors as well as carpet for my bedroom because they had what I liked best. I am not going to name names but as nice as my sales person came off in the end she as well as other Lewis employees caused me headaches as they mis-quoted me prices, then would not honor the original prices, didn't follow through in a timely matter among, told me that i should have chosen something different if I didn't want it to be so expensive, ordered way too much product and charged me for it, just to name a few things and in the end to re-tile and carpet 800 sq. ft cost me WAY more than originally expected. Basically I felt as if the numerous sales people that helped me know how to sell their product but does not know anything about them. At the end of the day the Gabriel and his team did an amazing job with my tile and I LOVE it and would pick the same tile again, just from somewhere else. Also, Michelle in Customer Service was the only one that truly listened to all my concerns and wanted to make a bad experience a good one and in the end she did honor the original price that was quoted to me as well as credited me for the overage that was. I had a terrible experience with wood flooring at Lewis carpet. They came out to lay my wood floors in my new house. After several months of construction before we decided to finish the last coating of the floors we had Lewis come out again to assess scratches and any issues with the floor. They told us that there were major cupping issues and that the entire floor needed to be sanded down again and start over. They accused us of not caring properly for the flooring and told us we would need to pay in full to have this redone. When we met with the man there he was very childish, immature and rude. He continued to blame us for the issue rather than standing by their product. In the end they disclosed that they would be unable to finish the job without giving us a estimate of any kind to see if we wanted to move forward with finishing the job. My family has dealt with this company for 30 some years and they have always been very hard to work with. I am extremely disappointed in the behavior of the head of wood flooring and also the manager of the store. There was no care or class when dealing with this project. I will never go there again. read more

It's worth coming here to see the remnants alone if you want to make an area rug or runner. Since their customers are mostly in the North Shore, there is a good selection of remnants for a much lower price than you'd pay if it was from the manufacturer as a new order. Even though the remnants are limited, I still found 3 or 4 that I liked because they just have good quality stuff in that room. The binding adds to the price quite a bit, but still, (for example) the runner they made for me would've been over $500 had it not been made out of a remnant. The whole remnant was $50 (they drastically cut prices on their remnants recently) + $150 in fees to cut & bind it. So, $245 (with tax and pad) for 12 x 3 is still a very good deal for karastan. Compare it to online retailers of Chinese polypropylene runners that look shiny and feel like plastic... they're not much cheaper & they're awful. Plus, in this case, I got the rest of the remnant too which happened to fit perfectly in another room. It's just not bound so some strings come off. I also think serging looks a lot better than binding (I'll upload a pic of the difference later), but at this store - it's sometimes a big price difference (depends on the vendor I think). I am not sure if remnants can be serged actually. For new carpet, they are not that cheap, but it's not a store that is really geared for price sensitive people. They don't put prices on a lot of things in the showroom which is a little annoying vs. home carpet one - which does put a price per square foot on every piece. So, it takes a while to get your quote - sometimes a few days here. They also don't take Amex. They installed wall to wall for me in 2008 too - and it was all done well by the installers who were very quick and really did a good job. The only unfortunate thing about that situation was I picked a carpet in the brown / beige color family - but the rug looked very green / brown. The just sort of shooed me away with the "dye lots" excuse, and they didn't want to deal with me even though it was way too far from an acceptable variance in my opinion. I spent hours of carrying sample boards to and from the store / condo to pick the perfect color in the light where it would be installed. They also made an area rug for the living room that the next buyer wanted & had for years (even showed up in his MLS pic when he sold the place a year ago) - so they do a good job! But, after the color thing, I haven't been back until now. What I have now all worked out though. read more

I really would not disregard the bad reviews here. If a project goes smoothly without a hitch or any need for customer support, then fine - any tile place will do. But if you value customer service, then Lewis is not the place to go. They honestly have the worst customer service I have ever experienced - and that's saying a lot. I purchased the Live in Stone tile here which my contractor installed in a shower. One of the pieces required cutting 3 holes for the shower head and controls - which really is not that unusual. After 4 attempts and 2 different tile guys, no one was able to cut this tile without it breaking "like glass" according to both tile guys (who by the way were completely independent and didn't know each other). Each time, it broke along almost a straight line. Both tile guys said no true porcelain tile should do this. I emailed Lewis' customer service who defensively said it wasn't the tile, as this is "premium" tile. And yet they refused my request to have their own tile guys make the cuts for me - even if I paid for it. I sent a picture of the piece I needed, and the response I got from the manager of customer service was "I don't have any available installers to do this for you. Sorry." That's it - no effort to help come up with a solution, no offer to reach out to the manufacturer for suggestions, no offer of a full or partial refund. That is not customer service. That is not a company that stands behind its products. The only saving grace is that this is a smaller project for me - we have a much bigger one planned and I'm thankful I found this out before. I will not be going back to Lewis, and will encourage my friends, family, clients, etc. to stay away. read more

We bought a home in June and needed carpet installed. I went to Lewis. At the time, the customer service seemed ok. I am picky so I want to be catered. It seemed as if the initial salesmen thought I was taking to long to choose a carpet and I was definitley asking to many questions. I wanted wool, but he insisted they will not warranty any wool in the basement for any reason. So I was talked out of it. Big mistake #1. So, I chose some Karastan carpet. Fast forward to installation. They cancelled their initial appointment. Which was inconvenient, but happens...so they reschedule for a date I am out of town. When we returned they completely covered a drain in the floor (basement) with the carpet. They came out to fix it within the week. Which turned out fine. After 3 months, I noticed pulls in the carpet. The seams started fraying terribly. First started out with one strand and I completely blamed my kids. They denied it (of course.) Then another, then another. There are 6 strands that have pulled up. So, I call Lewis. They send someone out to inspect the carpet. The man who inspects and take pictures. Then I receive a call from "Sharon". Saying," I don't know what you did to that carpet but..." No, Im sorry about this issue, no, OMG that shouldn't be happening, lets see what we can do. Just blaming me for the poor carpet I chose. She insisted that she has seen carpet installed for 20 years that didn't have this damage. Then she will need a piece to send to the mfg. By the way, we do not warranty carpet vaccumed by a Dyson. ???? Wait, what? When did you mention this to me. Thankfully I have a Miele. So, to wrap this up, I will say this. I understand that it seems very possible this carpet is awful, my problem since I chose it. However, it is the customer service at this place that is just ridiculous. They are out to make a buck. They do not have any motto about pleasing the customer or working with them at all. I chose this place out of the ability to stay "local". I had a few neighbors tell me (after the fact) that they also will never shop at Lewis. It is a disappointment because they have a lot of products and I like to remodel homes. miserable customer service. After finishing a small tiling job, we had one box of unopened tile. It was stock material, but Lewis demanded a 25% restocking fee. Should a restocking fee be based upon sales tax, I doubt it. Lewis calculates the restocking fee based on the TAXED purchase price. Feels greedy to me. Find somewhere friendlier to shop. We used Lewis for a couple of rooms in our house. We were happy with our sales person, overall. We purchased tile for one room, found a cheaper price that they were unwilling to match for another, and then purchased carpet for our stairs. All went fine until the carpet was installed. There are two pie-shaped stairs, and we weren't told that the carpet would be installed from the bottom up. That works fine from the bottom of the stairs, and even up to the first pie-shaped stair. But the diamond pattern of the carpet was almost (not quite) 45 degrees off on the second pie-shaped stair. The stairs above that were fine, also, so just one stair looked awful. We were told that the carpet was installed according to "industry standard", and after fighting for almost 2 months, finally got them to fix the stair - which they charged us for. They agreed to waive the installation fee, but tried to charge us the price for the smallest size of carpet they could buy - which was about 4 times what we needed. We finally settled on paying about half that much. I hope they think their $100 was worth it. Now when we need to recarpet the entire basement, we will be taking our business to a company that has better customer service and wants to see their customers happy. read more

I would not recommend shopping here. First, their prices are not competitive. You can do much better - for example ProSource in Elk Grove Village (but make sure your architect or contractor can get you their discount). Second, Lewis' customer service leaves something to be desired. We were unhappy with the tile we purchased from Lewis - the actual product was significantly different from their floor sample. I understand tile is a natural product and items will vary, but in this case it was like a different product. Lewis hid behind their policy of not accepting returns, so we got stuck with the product. read more

We've done business with Lewis over the years and liked it because it's convenient and they have a nice selection. We just had carpet put it , and although we are happy with the product, we have had a less than optimal experience with their customer service. Poor communication, they haggle and are inefficient with trivial things (samples), somewhat pushy salespeople (likely heavily commission based, where if you need something and your salesperson isn't there -- tough luck), and arrogant/rude customer service. They (customer service) act like they are doing us a favor , despite the fact we have spent a LOT of money supporting their business. I don't mind spending a little more as long as I get a good quality product, helpful expertise, and customer service. But I have to say I was disappointed. Perhaps for small projects they are fine, for larger projects do your research and look around --because if you have an issue they're probably not going to be too helpful. I really felt like they could care less about customer satisfaction. read more

I would give 6 stars if I could. The two salespeople, Patrick and Jo, I dealt with were extremely patient and helpful. Saul, who came to my condo to measure the two bedrooms, was very efficient and answered several questions. Jake, who coordinated the deliver and installation, was responsive and on top of all the details. Jesus and his son were very careful at moving the heavy furniture and putting it back exactly where I wanted it and did a perfect job of installing the carpeting. And the carpeting looks fantastic. read more

I contracted with Lewis Carpet to install an expensive wool carpet on my second floor. The first crew arrived on time and got right to work. Later in the afternoon another two installers arrived. I fed them lunch. After lunch I called up to ask for the phone number of the store. One of the workers confronted me -- in a very aggressive tone. I explained that I wanted to check on the status of another order. But his reaction was so odd that I asked my husband to stay at home and not leave me alone in the house. I had a party to go to that evening. I reached into a drawer in my closet to take out an item of jewelry. It was missing, and so was everything else of value -- family heirlooms. I know the bracelet and the other items were in the drawer a week earlier because my daughter was in town for a wedding and wore two pieces. It was definitely this crew that stole the items. Lewis wasn't the least bit helpful Contacted the police and they came out to dust for fingerprints but I think Lewis failed to disclose the names of the entire crew. They basically reused to provide me or the police with information that could have led to the arrest of one of their contractors. . They have a great selection but obviously are not monitoring their installers. Beware, they don't have your back. read more
