This was our first time at this restaurant. After hearing all the reviews it was well worth the visit and expensive dinner for our Christmas dinner together. The clams casino was the best I ever had. The steak with crab was cooked perfect. We also ordered the potatoes which were delicious and very different, the flavor of the beef broth and onions together was mouth watering. 3.5 stars Well, the overall experience is better than The Chop House and Ruth's Chris (the local competition), no doubt about that. But overall, Lewnes' ranks behind Capital Grille, Flemming's, and the more premier Baltimore/DC steakhouses. I will note that Lewnes' prohibition of cellphone use in the dining room is a welcome departure from today's plugged in culture, but I wish the staff enforced the rule more strictly (I would not mind seeing flagrant texters ejected from the dining room...though that might hurt Lewnes' bottom line). As for food, Lewnes' does meat right. I've had both the porterhouse and the ribeye; both were cooked perfectly. The butter is totally melted on the steak, and while I was first a bit surprised by the pepper on the porterhouse, it actually accented the meat quite nicely. For dessert, the chewy brownie topped with ice cream is a simple yet delectable choice (and apparently often free). Even though it is a brownie, it is rich, so prepare to be very full if you finish the entire thing. On the other hand, the bread was bland and wholly unimpressive (perhaps slightly better than the bread brought out pre-entree by the Cheesecake Factory). Likewise, the house salad is no better than what I could get at the Olive Garden (and it was drenched in vinaigrette, just like the OG's salad). Finally, I would characterize the Lyonnaise potatoes as merely okay. Now, my friend Greg always tells me that I should not judge a steakhouse by its bread or salad (indeed, some fine restaurants do not offer bread), but I rate the experience as a whole. Went there for our 15th Anniversary September 10th...I had the Bone in Cowboys Ribeye (Medium), the lady had the Petite Filet (Medium Well). First, I must comment on the location, as someone who generally only travels from the Eastern Shore to Annapolis for shopping I feel like this restaurant located perfectly to its feel as an upscale steakhouse. The location gives it a homely feel, at the same time you know your in a unique location. The only downside would be the bar that is located just inside the front door. However with an open mind one can easily see that being ushered away to a seemingly private 2nd floor dining are the bar is of little consequence. Once seated in an oversized booth I scanned the small room and really felt like there is a feel of 40's and 50's inspiration. From the old pictures hung on the wall, to the color scheme. Oddly enough I kind of felt like Cappone in a Chicago Styled Steakhouse where I was the main attraction. Our waiter, Nick, could not have been more personable, offering Whitby banter and interesting conversation during his frequent, but not rude, visits to check and interact with his guests, felt very special. The appetizer was split, Clams Casino and Oysters Rockefeller, advertised as 3 of each, they arrived at the table 4 of each. The hostess obviously passed on the occasion as we were engaged by Nick with how many years we were celebrating! The appetizer was delicious, even to my wife who typically doesn't eat mollusks. The main course was well presented, perfectly seard.and cooked just right. Both choices had wonderful flavor and honestly were superior to any chain I have visited....the house treated us to a complementary ice cream covered brownie, which was better than home made. We don't go often. My wife doesn't like beef. Fortunately we have a niece who is a serious carnivore so we visit Lewnes about once a year. There are good choices for those not inclined to eating a cow: chicken, tuna, salmon, and they are really good. The beef is really first rate. They cook it properly and deliver what you order. Good ingredients well cared for is what a steak house should deliver but often doesn't. Lewnes' does. Like a lot of steak houses EVERYTHING is extra so the bill can mount up pretty fast. read more

Great steak place! We had a work dinner there and they really came through. The place was quiet on a Wednesday evening. We had a drink at the bar and the bartender was friendly and knowledgeable. Everyone had either steak or prime rib. My NY Strip was great. The sides were good and the standout for me was the creamed spinach; I don't usually care one way or another, but this was hands-down the best creamed spinach I've ever had! The wine list was extensive although overpriced, IMO. The entire experience was expensive, but that's what you pay for a top-notch steak place. I'd only rate one place higher than this for a steakhouse. I won't advertise for someone else here, but you can search my other reviews for another steakhouse that's 30-45 minutes away that I'd rank a slight notch higher than Lewnes. This is where we go to get perfectly cooked Filet Mignon! I've been craving a good steak, and our once a year visit to Lewnes' did not disappoint. The Petit Filet Mignon was simply/lightly seasoned with salt and butter, making the meat the star of the show. My husband ordered the jumbo lump crab cakes, which tasted really good too even without any sauce. We also got the sauteed spinach and mash potato (both presented family style, but could have been plated nicer). This time we indulged with dessert, and were pleasantly surprised by the taste and price. The key lime pie was heavenly ($4), and the chocolate ice cream was decadent dark chocolate ($2.50). The service was great, but we are not sure why the servers' uniform look more like a white Doctor's coat. Kind of looks out of place with the high booths, dark color decor. read more

I'm really between a four and a five. But I gave it a four until I return and they redeem themselves. Hubby and I had a reservation on Friday night, and we showed up right on time. When I checked in, they seemed a little disorganized - but I figured my huge 9 month pregnant belly and no seats at the bar would indicate they should try to seat us promptly. However, they proceeded to check in four more groups and seat ALL of them prior to us. And never offered to take my coat. Then we were sat in this weird little room off the bar which somewhat irritated me. Hence, the four not a five. But our waiter was great, he had a casual, but very knowledgeable disposition that put us right at ease. And I have to admit, I love the menu. It's limited, so it helped me make decisions a lot faster. And we weren't rushed at all - we ordered our mains/sides well after our first courses (because even with a limited menu I still couldn't decide which starch to order). And I like that you can order half-orders of all the salads and sides (we didn't, and the leftovers have been worth it). They even gave us the leftover bread in our doggie bag! But one recommendation to the people that package leftovers: creamed spinach should not be put into a tin foil packet. For me, the standout of the meal was the Greek Salad...it had lemon roasted potatoes in it! Awesome. I lived in Greece, and I've never seen that - very creative and tasty. But hubby absolutely loved his fillet. And I have to admit my ribeye was pretty good; not the best I've ever had as I prefer a crispy char on the outside, but still the quality of the meat was excellent and I ate more than half of that sucker. Hubby also liked the wine-list (s). The upmarket list could scare the heck out of you...who orders $3k bottles of wine? But the "normal" list was approachable - the half bottle options were perfect since one of us had to abstain. I'm sure we'll be back very soon to try out desserts. read more

Writing this from a visit last summer. Decided to treat myself after a big accomplishment at work one Friday. Had never been here, but had heard good things about it. Ordered a steak, medium. The steak came out virtually raw. Ordered 3 sides which each came out cold. Another patron, who was more of a regular had brought some business clients to dinner and appeared to have the same experience and was complaining vociferously to the manager. As I was sitting at the bar I expressed my dissatisfaction to my server. I was given a dessert and the sides for free, but with a couple beers and the steak, the bill still topped $50 for one, for an experience that was a disappointing end to what should have been a great day. read more

With the highly commercialized competition a stones throw away, the decision to stay with Lewnes is an easy one. I've been to both but always return here for the steaks and the service. I had a Valentine's date here and we really enjoyed it! We started with the crab balls which weren't badly priced, especially for February. He got the porterhouse and I had the filet and we got the Lyonnaise potatoes as a side. The steaks, while unbelievably tender, were just a touch less seasoned than I'm used to. This is one of the best kept secrets in Annapolis. I actually hate to write a review because then the word just might get out. The Filet Mignon here is to die for. It will actually ruin you for eating it anywhere else but here. You MUST get a crabcake. You can order a single crabcake but make sure you get one of the table. The cocktail sauce is actually made fresh every day with someone grating fresh horseradish for it each morning. Their blue cheese is amazing if you love blue cheese. Try it and see for yourself! If you like prime rib, I would seriously call in and reserve it. They only have so much of it each day and it goes fast. The bartender makes the best cosmo in all of Annapolis. The staff is over the top and you will be treated like royalty. Anything fried in this place will absolutely tantalize your taste buds. I have no clue how they make onion rings taste like heaven but trust me you must try them. The same goes for their french fries. I never ever eat anything fried, but here I have to! I also like their tuna and my husband enjoys their lamb chops and veal. I am pretty sure there is nothing on the menu you won't like. My favorite dessert is the brownie--ask them if they have any fresh strawberries and they will accomodate you. It is a pricey place for special occasions or taking out a good client. The best part is because we are in a boating town, you can dress however you want as anything goes. They are expanding it as I type this to accomodate more patrons and to put a restroom upstairs. read more

I'm from the Annapolis area and have been to Lewnes a hand full of times over the last 10 years. Every time I walk away satisfied. The atmosphere is a bit stuffy, and the photos on the walls are dated and odd, but that's not why people go to Lewnes. The staff and food make the experience and both have been excellent every time I've dined at Lewnes. The wine selection is extensive, however i have not yet ventured past the house selections which are very good in my opinion. The appetizers are simple but generous. I have had everything on this section of the menu and can say that nothing disappoints. The shrimp and crab cocktails are large and tasty but the Clams Casino are my favorite. For steaks, I have only had the prime rib and the ribeye. Both are delicious and almost too much to eat in one sitting. The prime rib is served au jus with horseradish and the rib eye stands alone. All are cooked on the rare side of things. Sides are served a la carte and are large enough to share with 3-4 people. I always order the mushrooms and creamed spinach which are my favorite flavors to go with a juicy steak. My most recent visit we were served a portion of the thin fried potatoes that are almost like potato chips, but way more delicious. I'm looking forward to my next visit and expect it to be no less than spectacular! read more

This is a tough one to review. We Ended up at Lewne's for a birthday outing and was hyped by the high reviews on yelp. Very little street parking, however this is Annapolis we're talking about. We parked in the lot between 4th and 5th street. Was delighted to find we didn't have to pay since we left after hours (9pm). First walk into the restaurant we are greeted by nobody. No hostess greeting, no nothing. Just got looks from patrons at the bar. I could honestly say it was a weird experience on first impressions. Had to basically interrupt somebody after 5 minutes of standing in the doorway to tell us where our group was. Despite the awkward greeting at the door, we were led to a separate dinning room upstairs where we were the only one seated. very private. The waiter we had gave us by far the best service we've ever had. Now to dismay of the restaurant, the food. Ordered the Ribeye and was very very unimpressed. Cooked perfectly temperature wise, but very under-seasoned. One pet peeve when ordering steak from a restaurant is to have my plate oozing of oil and fat. It was just not presented right. The potatoes we had three ways and they were just ok. The spinach on the other hand was too sour and borderline inedible. Tasted the crab cake and was also unimpressed. The shrimp were also something left to be desired. Though our waiter was fantastic, for the price and lack luster food, I would think twice before going back. read more

I've been coming here for 20 years and Lewnes never fails to disappoint. Friendly, efficient service and great cuts of beef cooked to perfection. All of the sides are well done and their Greek salad is one of my favorites. I've eaten at a lot of fine steak houses around the country and Lewnes can hold their own with any of them. One suggestion is to add a few bottles of more moderately priced wines to the wine list (we'd probably drink more :-)). Keep up the good work guys! read more

Heard good things about this restaurant, but on our first visit, one of the people in our party ended up in the hospital in the middle of the night. Be wary if you have allergies to certain kinds of shell fish. While the diner ordered lobster, the kitchen staff prepared it on the same counter where oysters had been present, probably failed to clean the counter, and this individual is highly allergic to oysters. The result, rushed to the hospital in the wee hours of the morning. Not a good experience and definitely not a good recommendation. An establishment of this caliber should have a kitchen staff, particularly a chef, who knows the dangers of cross-contamination. Maybe time for a personnel change. read more

Attended a meeting for work at Lewne's and hoped to God that things would be better, but unfortunately not. Our waiter wasn't very helpful and when asked what he recommended his response was, "Whatever you want!" I get that maybe he thought that was a good response, but we were hoping for a little bit of guidance when narrowing down our wine selection. There were about a dozen of us and it was clear that they were trying to coordinate everything to come out at the same time, but most of our steaks tasted like they had sat under a warming light for a while. Most of us ordered the petite filet as it was a fixed menu, and boy were they petite! The spinach was loaded in garlic, but otherwise underseasoned. While I was planning a weekend trip to Annapolis for my husband's birthday, I Googled "Best Steak in Annapolis" and Lewnes came up first. I came in with high hopes, and it definitely didn't disappoint! My husband got the New York Strip, and I got the petite fillet. Both had excellent crusts. Initially, my steak was a little undercooked from what I prefer, but our waiter took care of it right away. When he brought it back, it was cooked to perfection. It was easily one of the best steaks I've ever had, and my husband said the same about his. I didn't catch our waiters name at the time, but our receipt says his name was Richard. He was awesome and friendly! I also mentioned in my reservation that we would be there for my husband's birthday. After the meal, our waiter brought us a complimentary brownie sundae, which was also delicious. The brownie was rich and had a wonderful crust (steak to desert, this place knows their crusts!). Our waiter wished him a happy birthday, and as we were leaving the host shook his hand and also wished him a happy birthday. We loved our experience at Lewnes! It will definitely be at the top of our list the next time we visit Annapolis, and that steak will be in my dreams in the meantime. read more

What a hidden gem this place is. Reminds you of a 1930-1940s restaurant with the classical music and atmosphere. The hostess stand was also very friendly and nice and so was the waiter. I took my cousin to this wonderful steakhouse last night. We'd been talking for a few months about sharing a meal and catching up and our schedules finally matched up. What an experience. We were greeted with a smile at the door by the GM, he took my coat and led us to our table immediately, even though we were a few minutes early for our reservation. Our drink orders were taken quickly by our server and brought to us promptly. She was nice enough to give us a few extra minutes as we caught up, as we hadn't seen each other in quite a while, and when she came back, we elected to start with the Clams Casino, which my cousin had never had, and we were absolutely thrilled. Just the right amount of cheese and bacon on juicy clams that were done just right! After we completely that tasty appetizer, we caught up for another 20 minutes then placed our dinner order; I ordered the Filet Mignon, medium, and my cousin ordered the Lamb Chops, medium rare. I initially wanted to get the mashed potatoes as our shared side, but they weren't available, and that forced me to order something healthy, the asparagus, which, in retrospect, was a wonderful decision. Our entrees came out cooked to perfection, and let me just stop here for a second. The asparagus. OMG the asparagus. As much as I liked the Filet, which was amazing, the asparagus was a perfect foil to both of our meals. We continued to chat and eat, and our server knew just when to be at the table, and to let us engage in conversation. We ended our meal with the brownie dessert, which we could not finish because at that point we were both in a self-induced food coma.
