Lex is one of those restaurants that just gets better every time my husband and I eat there. In addition to having consistently well prepared delicious Italian food with lots of great specials, it has great seating. We love the banquettes in the back, but there is also great outdoor seating and wonderful tables by the window in front. Lex's super power is the staff. Then we spotted this quaint Italian bistro with outdoor seating and looking cozy inside - maybe 3 tables filled. We stepped in and received impeccable service. The food was well prepared and tasty. The review that says "I never ran out of water, but the waiter wasn't all up in my business" is a cute way to say that the service is discreet, attentive, elegant. After reading so many "ehh" reviews before, I was a bit hesitant to go since I also bought the $25 for two travelzoo deal. However, the service was not bad at all. We were promptly seated, menu was handed, bread was brought over quickly, water refills were frequent, and our order was brought timely. The food, however, was as average as it could get. We got the calamari and crabcake. The calamari was good - the crabcake was weird. It was too fried and just... weird. We then got the eggs benedict and chicken parm. The eggs benedict did NOT look appetizing at all (refer to uploaded picture). The bread part, which I would assume is the English muffin, was wayyyyyy too burnt. It just did not do it justice. The chicken parm with the linguine was very average too - perhaps getting it at olive garden would've been better. We ended with the brownie a la mode and the cheesecake. More cases of average. Brownie, without doubt, was just microwaved. I don't think I would return - but service was very prompt. The regular price is $25 per person for the 3 course brunch. I'd so rather go to the brunch for $19 per person at Le Paris few blocks over. Oh - the decor was on the interesteding side as well. I guess it could be cozy and cute, but I thought it was going through identity crisis. My wife, daughter, and I had business near The Lex and decided to try it for lunch after we concluded our business. We got there at 11:50am they open at noon. A line was already forming. They opened promptly at noon and told us to sit where we like. We picked a table just off the bar but never felt crowded. The atmosphere was enjoyable and the ceiling fans added a refreshing breeze on NY spring day. The sounds were a nice mixture of good jazz and typical city noises but the city noises only added to the enjoyment. The staff were professional, attentive but did not hover nor crowd us. They offered suggestions when asked but never seemed pushy (surprising for NYC). They seemed to read our minds and brought the next thing just in time. We started with the calamari and it was done very well. The sauce that accompanied the calamari was good but not overwhelming. For lunch we each had something different and tried each others just for fun. Everything was prepared to perfection and was delicious. Most of the other customers were a bit on the older side but everyone seemed to enjoy their time at The Lex. As we concluded our meal they asked if we wanted desert and of course my daughter had to have a bit of ice cream and chocolate sauce. I had to try it, after all I am the princesses designated taste tester, HA! I didn't think much of it until I got a good taste of it and boy that was some excellent ice cream. The menu was outside so I knew what I was getting into price wise before we sat down and after the meal we all agreed it was worth it. It made the hassle of the city worth the trip. It is nice when you can find a place where you can sit and enjoy a meal with family (no phones no devices) and feel like it was time and money well spent. The short ribs were amazing. Juicy and tender with the meat melting in your mouth (pause). The Caesar salad was ok nothing special but not bad. The eggplant Parmesan appetizer was actually a lot better than I expected and was really tasty I almost forgot it was an eggplant. Terrible customer service. I ordered on delivery.com and waited for an hour for my food. Nothing. I called, turns out they haven't even set up their account yet. Where did my money go?! Where is my food?! I know it's not your fault for not getting the order but at least be nice to your customer. Also, the manager was not helpful at all. Didn't try to resolve the situation nor try to offer any help (at least ask if I still want my food?). He kept asking me to call delivery.com and trying to get me off the phone. Lex is the local go-to spot for a middlebrow Italian meal before a highbrow event at the 92nd Street Y (across the street). It's cheaper than Sfoglia, and less exotic than Peri Ela. The crowd skews old, and if you are an under-50 female, you will be treated to the sweetest, suavest service imaginable. The food varies from ok to quite tasty, and prices are reasonable. Salads are uniformly fine, and wine by the glass is generously poured. I've found that pastas are much better than fish or chicken entrees--last night's chicken special was a bit dry and redeemed only by its sauce, and the green beans were overcooked. They were out of the branzino, and the salmon my friend had as a replacement was, frankly, boring. Desserts are not original, but the tiramisu gelato was yum. We've always been offered sambuca on the house after the meal, which made me feel special until I realized that showing up more than once is grounds for being offered sambuca on the house after the meal. But if you're in the neighborhood, you'll probably show up more than once. read more

Like other reviewers here, we purchased the Travelzoo deal which offered 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 dessert, and 2 drinks all for $25 (not including tip or tax). The dishes that were offered were off of a special brunch menu and not their regular menu. For appetizers we ordered the soup of the day - french onion soup and the crab cake. We would have ordered the calamari but they said they ran out. The french onion soup was decent but nothing to write home about and the crab cake left a lot to be desired. However, I may be biased due to a recent trip to Maryland where the crab cakes are second to none. Moving on to the entrees we ordered the chicken parm w/ linguine and the spinach ravioli. The chicken parm dish was pretty bad. I would compare the quality to your local college dining hall food. The chicken was dry and the tomato sauce was watery. The spinach ravioli was decent but probably not that much better than the ravioli you can buy in the frozen section of your super market. For dessert I had the NY Style Cheesecake and my gf had the brownie a la mode. First off all the slice of cheese cake they gave me was tiny and second of all it was served it warm, if not a little hot. The brownie a la mode was also mediocre at best. The service here was actually really good. We got our waters refilled as we needed them and the food came out pretty promptly. We also go our check immediately after we asked for it. But with such mediocre food, we wont be returning to this restaurant. read more

Whether you are dining in or taking out, service is prompt and polite. The food is yummy and approachable italian with small twists to keep it interesting. It feels like you are in a nice place with white table clothes and dim lighting, but the prices are very good. Never crowded, patrons perhaps sometimes on the older side, but a good solid place to get a meal. There are a few small outside tables for nice weather days. You know how when every word a person says is perfectly courteous but they deliver it in a certain way and in a certain tone that still makes you think something is off? That's what I'm talking about. For the first course, my friend and I both had the crab cake which was pretty tasty! For my entree I had an omelet with cheese and ham, except they forgot the ham and all I got was cheese. At first I thought the ham was just in the middle of the omelet and I hadn't gotten to that part yet, but by the time I realized there was no ham I didn't feel like making a fuss so I just ate it that way. That was annoying though. For my dessert I got the brownie, which was decently good but nothing special. I came to Lex tonight with family and I had a great time, lots of fun and great food. I loved my calamari and pasta dish, but the sauce was a bit heavy. We shared chocolate dipped biscotti for dessert with tea, the Rose wine and Chardonnay wines were very good. Without a doubt, this restaurant is the best restaurant on the Upper East Side. Me and my coworkers decided to grab a bite to eat at the restaurant. As you see from the pictures, we've had quite the feast. Both my coworkers had the fish entrees. Rarely do I eat fish, but my colleagues insisted on me trying the Salmon and the Bronzino and it was beyond delicious. Again, I'm not a fish lover but I'd be open to ordering those entrees on my next visit. I myself ordered their special Pork Risotto. My entree went beyond expectations. The pork itself comes off the bone without any issues by just using your fork, that's right no knife needed. It melts in your mouth along with the risotto rice. I sincerely hope the restaurant considers changing it from a special to a permanent menu item. The staff at the restaurant were professional and courteous. The host was fantastic. Along with the waiter, both would consistently check on the table to make sure all was well. I highly recommend everyone check this restaurant.
