    Ceviche mixto

I am absolutely disgusted and horrified by my recent order from Lena y Carbon IV in Union City. I ordered ceviche and discovered bugs in my food. Yes, actual bugs. I have photos and videos for proof. IT WAS CRAWLING IN THE FOOD! This isn't just bad service -- this is a serious public health issue. I had to throw the food away immediately to avoid infestation in my home, and the thought that I even ate part of this order before noticing makes me sick. No restaurant should ever serve food like this. It's completely unsanitary, unacceptable, and unsafe. I will never order from here again, and I will be reporting this to the health department. If you care about your health and safety, avoid this place at all costs. That one will hit hard on Yelp and Google both -- clean, furious, and impossible to ignore. Want me to make you a spicier DoorDash/Uber Eats version too? (Like short but savage: "If you enjoy bugs in your food, this is your spot. Otherwise, RUN.")

I honestly wanted to like this place, i'm a big fan of Peruvian food and we saw a lot of great reviews on Instagram. The food was definitely true to the Peruvian culture. We went to take our food to go, and he brought the containers out and a roach fell on top of my food. I brought it to the servers attention, he definitely looked embarrassed. He came back after and asked us how we liked our food. I told him that it was good, but the Roach thing was a big turn off. He came back and said he was gonna discount my plate that the roach fell on. A very half ass apology we paid and we left. He tried to give us cookies on our way out, but I really don't want anything from this place anymore. Definitely should've did better I wasn't asking for a free meal, but it definitely could've been handled better.

Hudson County has no shortage of solid, no frills Peruvian restaurants, and Leña Y Carbon is a solid choice. This spot in Union City (one in a chain) offers up Peruvian standards (lomo saltado, chaufa, ceviche, pollo a la brasa) at a good bargain: I snagged a 1/2 pollo a la brasa with sides of fries and salad for $15. The salad, with cucumbers, shredded carrots, and beets on a bed of iceberg lettuce, was refreshing though the fries were limp and unseasoned. That chicken, though, was spot on: tender meat and well seasoned skin.

My girlfriend and I ate here for the first time and it was delicious. Especially the mussels (appetizer) I recommend. I also recommend the chicken. The dark meat was especially good. The white meat was very good, but a little dry tbh. Still, excellent food overall, excellent service, and nice vibe.

Great food portions, seafood was tasty and the place had live music at the time. Service was fast, good place to go to if you're hungry.

Been to other locations. Food is cheaper and better in Harrison. The chaufa in Harrison comes with more seafood( crab, mussels, shirmp, chicken and steak. Not only do they offer more but it is $4 cheaper. Food is good but this not the location I will frequent.

Got to try out their Peruvian Rotisserie Chicken and it was quite delicious. The restaurant is bigger than I originally expected too. I ordered online for pick up on a cold weekday and the food was ready when I arrived. Definitely no complaints with the chicken. The fried rice was a bit too salty for me but I mixed it in with some white rice to balance it out. As far as Peruvian chicken goes this place is definitely one of the better ones.

1/2 Pollo Al Carbon Chaufa - yummy! A must have

Ordered delivery and tried this place for the first time. The half chicken with chuafa as side was terrific! The green sauce is a must which they gave me quite a lot in the small containers. Other side I got was just a classic small salad. Lomo Saltado Carne was like some stir fried steaks with rice - very flavorful, on the greasier side, a good portion.

(Dined 09/17/2025 WE @ 6:30pm): I'm ready to savor a little taste of Peru!…read more In my quest to explore the various cuisine scenes and things to do throughout Jersey City and specifically the Heights, my friend and I met some friends of hers as we dined at Sabor A Peru. I've passed this place on several occasions over the course of four years since my friend moved here, and my attention was always caught by the plush llama in the front window. Plus, this was going to be my first Peruvian cuisine experience in Jersey City. Was the sabor a Peru to my liking!? PURCHASE(S) Corn Kernel Snack (COMP): A seasoned crunchy snack when we first sat down, these were enjoyable and my first time ever having them! Ceviche De Camarones ($19.50): A tidy shrimp ceviche appetizer for all to try, the medium shrimp (8 pieces) were plump and tender in a citrusy juice, with an assortment of carrot, lettuce, red onion, and white beans, this was a nice way to start our respective meals. Pollo A Lo Pobre ($20.95): Translated to "poor man's chicken", this truly hearty entree came with a large grilled lightly seasoned tender piece of chicken, two runny sunny-side up eggs, a heaping cup of puffy steamed white rice, a bed of crisp golden fries, and several pieces of sweet plantains. I loved this dish and it happily filled me up! Side Salad (INCLUDED): A nice simple palate cleanser, it didn't come with any dressing, so it was a bit "dry". 8pc Alfajores Minis Box ($8.00): A nice dessert that was shared among the four of us, these crumbly somewhat powdery sandwich cookies of sorts with a dulce de leche filling simply dissolved in your mouth while the powdered sugar marked you as a potential cocaine user. Credit Card Fee 3.50% ($1.7): This was just the direction businesses were going to pass along expenses... SERVICE We made reservations and were quickly seated at a window seat once we all arrived. Our friendly young hostess gave us glasses of water, menus, and a rundown of the evening's specials. Minutes later, we collectively placed our orders, she provided a tasty corn snack, and about ten minutes later, everything came out in a procession. We were checked on regularly even though the place got busier, and once it was time for the check, we settled that with no issues. Plus, because they didn't sell alcohol, they allowed diners to bring their own booze... which we did! Everything and everyone was friendly and nice - salud! PARKING (FREE; N/A this instance): This was a moot point since we walked the flat 10-minute distance. No parking lots in sight, there seemed to be plenty of spots along the main drag of Central Ave. and all surrounding side streets - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A clean modern elongated floorplan with a backyard coffee shop modern museum feel and multiple tables that lined the walls, I was hoping for a more authentic feel. A decent amount of natural lighting filtered through the front glass doors and windows while an assortment of electric recessed and twinkle ceiling lights filled in the rest. There were a few muted TV monitors while soft music played in the background. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL Sabor A Peru was a pleasurable evening out with friends, and I was impressed enough to try more of their menu. I felt they were a good representation of Peruvian cuisine, the food was yummy and flavorful, the prices were comparable, the service was efficient and friendly, and again you were allowed to bring your own alcohol without any fees. Plus, I always preferred to support small mom & pop businesses. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $53.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS

It's not the best Peruvian in the area and honestly deserves a 3.5/5 but I'm rounding to a 4 for the review. The 4pc Half Chicken Combo is a decent deal for the price point. The chicken is moist, well-seasoned, and pretty tasty. The garden rice isn't authentic as far as I know; every Peruvian spot will offer some form of rice & beans but unfortunately that's not an option here. They also serve this with an orange spicy sauce (aji amarillo) which was spicy, tangy, and a bit smoky. I'm surprised it doesn't come with the classic green sauce most Peruvian chicken places offer. I would also love if the Combo came with 2 half sides. Instead, I ordered Fried Sweet Bananas which were delicious but overly greasy and drenched in oil to the point where it was leaking out of 2 bags. The Beef Lomo Soltado is savory, tangy, and slightly smoky. The beef was pretty tender but the fries were so soggy. I almost wish they serve it separately for delivery so it can maintain some crispiness. The white rice pairs well with this since it soaked up all the delicious flavor from the beef, tomatoes, and onions. Not the best in the area but decent try!

The seasoning was just right, and the crispy skin added the perfect touch. The side of fries and rice complemented the chicken beautifully, making for a well-balanced and satisfying meal. Everything was cooked to perfection, and I can't wait to order again. Only downside is when ordering takeout is there is really no where to park and it is a very tight street. Best option is to parking with your hazards on and have someone run in for you. Highly recommend!
