Forman's Whiskey Tavern - Jalapeño burger & spicy fries

Before meeting up with friends, I always check the menu to avoid the embarrassment of spending the…read moreentire lunch hour agonizing over what to order. Going in to Forman's Whiskey Tavern, I had 5 choices from the menu that looked amazing to me: 1. TAVERN SALAD with manchego, apple, candied pecans, and a champagne vinaigrette. 2. GRILLED CHEESE sweetened with butternut squash and a sage brown butter. 3. TAVERN (Impossible) BURGER with avo, arugula, pickled onion, and honey mustard dressing. 4. BISTRO (Impossible) BURGER which is like the French Onion Soup of burgers on a challah bun. 5. PATTY MELT, but I'd let my carnivorous side indulge with beef vs. Impossible meat. Thankfully the menu special that greeted me at the front door reaffirmed my choice that I should choose a burger. The Weekday Special from 12-3pm: Any Burger or Sandwich, Side of Fries or House Salad, and a pop was just $16. Plus, the bartender encouraged me that the burgers are really good. So the TAVERN BURGER with Impossible meat, a side green salad, and a lemonade needed no coin toss for me to be decisive. Ordering my meal at the bar was easy, there was no line, and service was quick. I loved that it was chill for a mid-week lunch hour. However, I imagine it gets busy later on in the afternoon and during a non-holiday week. Most of LA was already heading out to campsites for the 4th of July week from what it seemed. Beyond the burger, I really loved the fun decor. Inside, it felt like a Southern Hunting Lodge with its trophies hanging on the wall. Outdoors, it had my kind of charm with its lush greenery, flowering blooms, rustic decor, and picnic-style benches that felt like you're in someone's backyard. I'm sure the big tree in the center helps make the twinkle lights amazing at night. Plus, if you bring your furry friend (service dog) then the outdoor patio is a nice place to chill, and there's a bowl of fresh water just for them. As for drinks, there are plenty of beer choices on tap from Old Rasputin Stout to IPAs. Malbec and Opolo Zin looked enticing too. Since this is a Whiskey Tavern, there are lots of options ranging from low to high-end spirits to choose from. I recommend you take a peek at their menu beforehand to avoid deliberating for a while before choosing the one that speaks to you.

First of all, I love the artwork. That is what convinced me to try this particular Granville when the first three were OK but nothing special. This one is. Second, the place is vast and beautifully decorated inside (see my pix). The temperature, the music (80s), the furnishings (brick, stone, glass, metal, wood -- all top quality), the plants, and the service were exceptional. Third, if you are up for it, there is valet parking even for weekend brunch. This is nice because the neighborhood is a little grungy and that saves stepping over the things on the sidewalks that should really be cleaned up by the city. Fourth, the menu keeps evolving. Everything we had there was for the first time. All of it was perfect. Beautifully plated, served at the right temperature, fresh and well seasoned, delicious. Dre, our server, was all smiles and so efficient, she seemed to float around. She made the experience lively and fun. This is a big space and yet, even on an off day at an off hour, people were streaming in the entire time we were there, almost filling it up. Whoever designed the place knew how to bring in just the right light so everything glowed and was brightly mysterious, iykwim? It was a perfect experience from start to finish. I am not sure I would try any other Granville when this one hit it out of the park!

The exterior is fully covered in beautiful colorful graffiti art. The only problem is that the restaurant's name was blended into the art, so it took a bit to recognize where we were going. It was our 1st time, at this location. We know now though. They also offer valet parking. My husband doesn't really eat this early, so he only ordered fries and a glass of pinot noir. He said the fries were perfect, and lots of them. Crispy on the outside and potatoey on the inside. I got the pasta alla vodka. I added a bit of red pepper flakes and it tasted really good. It was a good size portion and I planned on taking 1/2 home. However, I ate the whole thing. Man was I full. I get to go back tomorrow night, possibly at a different location. Hmm, what should I order this time?

That says a lot about the staff. Our server, she was a young lady, was on top of everything and really made our time here enjoyable. I came here for happy hour on a Tuesday was surprised to find out they do $2 tacos and $5 margaritas. Let me tell you, the tacos are delicious and the margaritas are STRONG. It's a hell of a good time. I really enjoyed the chicken taco and carne asada taco. The meats were juicy and very flavorful. I also ordered their nachos, chili cheese fries and bread pudding. The nachos were made perfectly with the chips being thin and crispy. They used a couple different cheeses and the jalapeños were a nice touch. Definitely ordering it again, I can do without the chili cheese fries. It was good but it wasn't amazing. Their bread pudding was HUGE and I can see why it's one of the popular items here. The bread was crispy on the outside and soft and gooey in the inside. Morrisons is definitely a fun place to be. Perfect to enjoy happy hour, catch the games on, and hang out friends. They have plenty of seating inside and outdoor with heat lamps. They are dog and kid friendly as well

So I made sure to return the following week with my girlfriend and promptly order at 10:20 PM right after our class at which point we were once again told that the kitchen is closed because there weren't enough people at the time and so they just closed early. When I told them this was now the second time that I had been denied service here because they are keeping erratic kitchen hours I was told that they have a lovely street taco lady just outside. I have no intention of giving this place a third chance.

Located inside Hotel Amarano (also a hidden gem), FYC (For Your Consideration) emits a classy ambience and a cozy vibe. This is a place where celebrities will come to dine because their privacy is respected. It's intimate enough for date night but also a perfect spot to catch up with friends. Of course, Te-See & I are always dressed to the nines regardless of where we go, but this time our fashionable wardrobe was the perfect attire for this chic lounge. Libby (director of sales & marketing) even came over to tell us how fabulous we both looked. We had an enjoyable conversation with her, and she told us many wonderful things about Hotel Amarano. I'll definitely recommend it to visitors and may even book a staycation for myself. Norm the bartender was friendly and attentive - engaging us with lively banter. I had the Bouquet of Roses - a refreshing combination of Kettle One Peach & Orange Blossom vodka, Lillet Rosé, Rosé wine, & peach purée. It was perfect for the summer evening. Te-See had the Spicy Passionfruit Paloma - minus the spicy. It was also very tasty. Anton also had the Paloma but spicy. I compared the two and liked the spicy version better. I had to leave before food was ordered but my friends said that the Shrimp Cocktail and Parmesan fries were delicious and ample enough to share. I really liked the vibe of this place and look forward to coming back. *Valet for the hotel or street parking.
