I had the pleasure of meeting Kenzie, who provided excellent service, and the manager, Cory, who was friendly and welcoming. I learned that Kenzie makes all of the restaurant's homemade fried pies. Cory recommended the chocolate fried pie as one of his favorites, and after trying it, I completely agree--it was absolutely outstanding and the perfect way to finish the meal. The restaurant itself is older and a bit dated, but it is clean, well-maintained, and has a warm, hometown atmosphere. During my visit, there were plenty of locals dining in, and I noticed a steady stream of customers picking up to-go orders, which says a lot about the quality of the food. I have high standards when it comes to food, customer service, and cleanliness, and I'm happy to say this restaurant met every one of them. The catfish is magnificent, with that wonderfully gritty cornmeal batter surrounding flaky, tender fish. The complimentary roll is also delicious! And the servers are very nice here! But there are some downsides. The fried okra, my favorite southern side dish, is actually soft and soggy. No self respecting southerner would ever make soggy fried okra. It's about the worst I ever had. And the onion rings, which are hard to mess up, were burnt black and lacked flavor. They were inedible. The cashier is rude and doesn't have time for "thank you" or small talk or a smile or even giving you your receipt when nobody else is in line to pay their bill. That's just how it is. If you want good catfish, Sling Shot Charlie's will come through. But if you want a southern culinary experience that's enjoyable, there are much better places to have it!

While passing through recently, we decided to stop in for lunch and relive some good memories. Unfortunately, things have changed over the years. The quality of the food has noticeably declined, and the service was disappointing compared to what we remembered. It's always frustrating when a place you once enjoyed no longer delivers the same experience. The vibe is still there, but the food and service just didn't live up to our past visits. In both the one-pound pack and the whole ham, some slices were very thick (up to nearly 1/4") - and some was paper-thin. What a disappointment!!! We now are thinking of returning to the 'other ham store,' even though we weren't greatly pleased with their product. The Ham Store currently appears to be selling an inferior product, and they really need to work on this!!! Go back to your great product!!!

My wife and I showed up dressed nicely, I had dress shorts, nice button shirt and Olakai flip flops. Host asked if we had reservations and I responded with when I checked we didn't really needed any. He went and spoke to someone and then came back and said they would try to work us in. That went for about two minutes and then he said we could not be seated. So I don't know if it was because I was in dress shorts and nice short or had tattoos. First time I've felt to be discriminated because of my tattoos. Will never visit again and will not recommend. Horrible service, the host was barely understandable and my wife even asked me if she heard what she thought she heard. Horrible experience. I'm not a low life but felt like treated as one. If you have a strict dress code, post it online and I'll follow. It's Jackson, Tn! No need to get extremely formal!
