I ate at the counter this past Friday. 12:30, surprisingly no wait, quite a few seats. I guess everybody splurges on Fridays and eats at the fancy places instead. Anyway, I ordered my usual hamburger steak with Diet Coke. I asked for the bathroom code (3581, as of 2/24/23) and went to wash my hands. My friend's friendly dog was licking my hand at their home in Nuuanu, so even though dog's saliva is antiseptic (it's true - Google it!) I still had the unsettling feeling I needed to wash. When I got back from the outside restroom, the butter roll was waiting for me. The butter roll is split in half and heated a little on the cooktop, and it is full of butter or some ersatz substitute so it's good. I had 3 pieces so now I guess that's what you get; 1.5 rolls. The top half is better than the bottom part but I don't think you can specify. I got two bottoms. Luck of the draw, I guess. When I got my plate, it was steaming. So much so that the couple next to me on the counter commented as they were leaving, "Wow, that looks good!! Look at all that steam." 'Yeah,' I thought to myself, you should have ordered this instead of that flat boring omelette i saw you eating. Anyway, the hamburger was charred and tasty with no fillers, the gravy was thick and fine, and the potato salad, the king of salads, was excellent. Even the head lettuce under the salad was crisp and fresh!! The hamburger steak was $16.50, the Diet Coke was $2.99, and tax was $0.92, for a total of $20.41. so $25.00 including tip, except I took the shiny quarter and shiny penny, so $4.33 tip. Since my last review, I've visited the original Liliha Bakery a few times. Over time, I finally learned why their signature Coco Puffs are so popular. Unfortunately not a good experience today at Liliha Bakery. This time both food and service were disappointing. I've been to Liliha Bakery numerous times growing up and enjoyed their food, especially the butter rolls with jelly and famous poi doughnuts. After we entered, there was no seats for three at the counter so we waited. After notifying one of the workers that seemed too busy to notice us, she told us to just wait on the side. In the meantime, other customers would just walk past us and sit down. If one of the other customers didn't tell us to grab empty seats, we would have still been waiting. Once we sat down, it took many tries of yelling out and waving to the workers to be able to order, again workers all acting too busy to get their attention. Finally ordered, and when we get our food, steak ordered medium rare was well done, piece of chicken for the mahi and chicken combo special was so super thin, overall the food was not worth the price at all. At the end, it was very easy for me to pay as they took my card without me having to ask, quite the opposite of getting seated and ordering. Sorry Liliha Bakery, you folks totally missed the mark this time which is disappointing because being a local, we like coming back but it's a toss up if I will come back again next time. Went with a party of 7, seated after a minimal wait which was great 'cause we were all hungry. Server was patient and agreeable to splitting the check 3 ways so that's good! I ordered the fried chicken (2 pieces, you get a choice of 2-piece or 3-piece). I got it with brown rice instead of white, and tossed salad instead of mac-potato salad to minimize the damage to the waistline. All entrees come with their famous butter-grilled dinner rolls and mystery pink jelly (you can purchase a jar of the jelly at their bakery counter, but just like tonight they're usually sold out). The dinner rolls were warm, buttery, and simply awesome with that jelly slathered on it. The side of tossed salad had a tiny dollop of ranch dressing on it, no options for other dressings and the ranch dressing is automatically dolloped on, next time I have to remember not to get the dressing. The brown rice was rock hard and unappetizing as usual, I gave up after a few bites but I knew how horrible it was...so I ordered it on purpose so I wouldn't eat too much starch! I've had several other entrées here, and they were all very good-- The fried chicken was no exception, crispy on the outside and very moist on the inside. Cooked thoroughly and quite delicious especially with a small sprinkle of Tabasco sauce. The entrée came with one thigh and one breast piece, it would've been way too much to have three pieces though I could've taken one home. It also comes with corn, nothing to write home about but a nice accompaniment to the chicken. I love the entrées here because they have food that you may be too tired to cook that night, but wanted as comfort food such as meatloaf, fried chicken, mushroom chicken, or oxtail soup. there's always parking somewhere around the building, and tonight wasn't that busy so that was a bonus for us. Although I did not order any alcohol this time, they have two beer selections, a basic white and a basic red wine for those that wish to imbibe. Must visit bakery and eatery! There are several locations, but this one seems to be the easiest to get in compared to the uber-busy Waikiki locations. They have bar-seating running down the side of the front, and four tables inside the kitchen. It is a little warmer and loud in the kitchen, but you get to see all of the action and ask questions about what they are making. We preferred being inside there as opposed to at the bar seating. The staff is very accommodating. We got the French Toast platter and the Two Egg with Corned Beef Hash and potatoes, with a side of bacon. The grilled rolled are complimentary and excellent, dipped in the red jam they provide. We placed a to go order from the bakery section after our meal. At first I didn't get the hype, because I only tried out the bakery part and honestly wasn't impressed. Not until I sat down at the bar and tried their breakfast then I realized oooo this is good! To start off, they served 2 butter bread rolls before your entree arrived, and gosh those could be addicting. They're crispy, buttery and soft. Although I was a bit skeptical at first about the sauce that they gave out, I dipped the bread in it, and it was a good complement because it gave it a kind of sweet taste, and the sauce was actually a syrup, but I don't know why it's red. I'm generally not a huge fan of local moco, but since it's one of the popular dishes, I decided to give it a shot. Oh my goodness it was probably the best loco moco I've had as far as I could remember. Make sure you get it with the fried rice , it went really well with the gravy. The ladies there also worked very hard with cooking and serving customers at the bar. They deserve a good tip for sure. And it's really fun to see the action in the kitchen while you're eating. There could be a wait since there weren't many seats, especially around breakfast time, if you wanna skip the line, the crowd started to die down after 9 AM. I'd probably only recommend this location because I love the charm of it being their original. I'm all about vibes and this location is it. We're still celebrating you would be too if your kid was as awesome as mine ;) they did a quick little inscription that I asked for while he snagged us two bar stools. We waited about 5minutes I'd say, so don't be discouraged by a line - stools turn over quickly. We ordered pancakes, coffee and grilled buttered rolls. Everything is soooo yummy! The amount of butter is so on point. I love me some butter! Hand to God this is hands down one of, if not the best spot you'll find on the island. You'll be hard pressed to prove me wrong. Ate here recently and absolutely loved the hamburger steak. The flavor of the hamburger steak is simply amazing. The burger is cooked on a flat top and the flavor, in my opinion, is what a burger should taste like. I had a side of white rice and the salad. My dining companion had an omelette, potatoes and pancakes. I wasn't that impressed with the potatoes, but the rest was good. They serve a red dipping sauce that is paired with biscuits. Both are delicious. I also bought some blueberry scones that I thought were very good. The scones aren't dry and crumbly as some sones. Their scones are moist and delicious. The service was matrer of fact, but helpful. The dining area is similar to an old lunch counter, but there is some seating behind the kitchen. COCO PUFF!!! First time at this bakery and I had no idea what to get. We dined in for breakfast and also bought a bunch of goodies to go from the bakery side. The other guests recommended the coco puff to us which is their famous cream puff filled with chocolate like pudding and it was not too sweet! I'm not a cream puffs kinda gal but these were really good that I regret not buying a frozen box to take home with me to the mainland. I also tried the matcha cream puff and it was delicious. We tried the onion bacon roll and the pizza roll and it was really good too, I drool as I write this remembering my experience there. As for the breakfasts, we got the hamburger steak and the Portuguese sausage with egg and rice. The Portuguese sausage was juicy and smoky but the hamburger steak had a really nice charred taste to it. We got to sit at the counter and watch them cook everything too. Our food also came with their sweet butter rolls that they grill for you, it was good but a little greasy for my liking. Plus the syrup it came with tasted kinda like cough syrup. Beef stew hit the spot on a rainy day. No complaints there. We were less impressed with the loco moco. We felt like the gravy was under flavored, and we didn't like the char on the hamburger patty. The butter rolls went crazy though. I could've just ate these and been happy, no jelly needed. We were so full after our breakfast we didn't have room for desert, even though that's what we actually came for. But it was a very cool experience eating at the counter. Usually the fillings and toppings are generously provided. However, my last recent visit, both seemed way too skimped. Bc of quality and taste, I'm maintaining my stars at 4 for now. If cost of doing business plays a factor in pricing, I would rather they provide a great reliable fantastic product (coco puff with enough filling and topping) than to continue opening so many different store-restaurant locations. One coco puff = about $2.25; box of 12 about $27. With the decrease in amount of topping and filling, price should be cheaper or they should make a larger coco puff. Coco puff flavors: original, green tea, chocolate. My favs are original and green tea. Ppl like the pancake batter. One can buy the frozen pre-packed batter in the aisle near the window facing the street. They do make cakes to order and lots of other desserts including ones with meats. Everything is baked fresh in-store :cool: Call to place an order, then pay by phone or pay in person. If you ordered by phone, you can get into the pick up line immediately upon entering the store. Bakery is to the left; Restaurant is on the right. Cashier is in the center toward the bakery side. Nice clean store displays and restaurant. Liliha Bakery has great food. We rarely eat donuts but it was dad's day and my dad was reminiscing about the eclairs from a hole-in-the-wall bakery in Kaneohe when he was a kid. So I browsed online for a bakery that offered eclairs and bear claws (my mom's fave) for a Father's Day treat. The only place I could find in the area was Liliha. I picked some of the above up, along with bread pudding and poi donuts. I regretted not getting our favorite chocolate cream puffs instead. The eclairs just weren't that great, I did not care for the bread pudding and the bear claws were meh. My kids loved the poi donuts (they're sweet and mochi-like). All-in-all I would not recommend getting those classic pastries from Liliha--they just don't taste right. Of course the classic cream puffs are winner so go with those if you have a sweet tooth & the poi donuts! The regular menu food is always great and the staff is friendly. I ordered online and there was a long line. Luckily, they have an online order line but it still took around 10 mins to grab our order. So I'd give the pastries a 3-star (not including coco puffs lol) but the overall restaurant id give a 5-star. read more

We love Liliha Bakery and have been going here for the last three years whenever we visit Hawaii (yearly). They have multiple locations but we definitely prefer this location. I have tried the loco moco, short stack, omelet, mahi mahi, and their deserts. Everything is good. I usually get the loco moco andnever l left hungry. The newer location in the International Marketplace in Waikiki can't be beat! On my most recent visit my friend and I needed to get some lunch quick. She had the Prime Rib and I had the Chicken with Mushroom. Both are highly recommended! You get your choice of greens or mac salad, rice or potato, and there's corn. The prime rib was tender (prepared medium) and the chicken had a light breading on it that was perfect and the CHC idk was moist. The servings are huge and everything complimented each other. Before these meals were served we were given a basket of their famous butter rolls with the hot pink jam. We did our best to not eat all the rolls before the food came out. You must get their poi mochi donuts! Soft and delicious. They're not overwhelmingly sweet. There are also other baked goods as well. They are also known for their cream puffs but I am more of a mochi donut girl. I did get their green tea puff which was great! The puffs come in other flavors like chocolate and original. The service was also very prompt and friendly. The host greets you as you come in and as you leave. As I am a Honolulu native (now living on the mainland), people always ask me my top local spot--preferably not a fancy restaurant. I believe there are now 4 Liliha bakeries, but the original Kuakini street location is OG. I have eaten here since childhood. The liliha batter is heavenly and the pancakes come with an (un) healthy dollop of butter. I usually get one as a side order for breakfast. There is something magical about the grill here. Maybe the years of flavors on it, maybe the fresh preparation right in front of you. The sausage is fried just right. The butter roll is a sinful addition to your rice and pancake (YOLO). Incidentally, though not well known, the hamburger deluxe with half order potato salad is epic and worth taking out to eat later . The seating is counter only so expect a bit of a wait and don't be surprised if a foursome has to be split up. Totally worth it. The original on Liliha Street is a bit smallish and there is not many seats on the counter to eat, but it's where it all began and it's always great to visit. Many years ago, my mother would take my sister and I to celebrate with a Chantilly cake. Chantilly cake? Yup, a decadent layered cake made with a local twist - not found elsewhere and Liliha Bakery makes the best on the island. Second on my favorite list is the custard pie - creamy and the doughy crust makes for a tasty flavor. In addition to the bakery products, dining on site is great too - the loco moco gravy makes it truly tasty and one you should definitely try. The pancakes are so awesome that my mom used to buy the batter to make at home! The popularity of Liliha Bakery is apparent as there are many locations - Nimitz Hwy (close to downtown, where the old City Mill was located), Ala Moana Shopping Center (Macy), Waikiki (International Market Place), Pearl City; and all are fine, but the original is the original and worth visiting. read more
