I loved the pickled tartar sauce that came with it - it wasn't heavy mayo like other tartar sauce. We upgraded for fried rice which tasted delicious! Finally, we also tried the ox tail soup. I was looking for the best Loco Moco in Hawaii and happened upon an article with authors who visited 75 establishments over four islands. Amazingly enough we were on the same island that scored the number one spot both times (Oahu) that they've done this ranking so we HAD to hit Liliha Bakery for their Loco Moco. This trip did not disappoint! This has one counter to dine at, but they have tables in the back and our party of four dined back there. One of my favorite eating places from when I was 11 years old, we still enjoyed eating there. Today there are only two ladies watching the counter. They were so busy and we waited for about seven plus minutes be she is free to take our order, after we ate, we waited for 15 minutes before she process our bill, we just sitting there waiting. Went to late lunch at the Ala Moana location. Was seated immediately and was greeted by a friendly server. She answered some questions and gave us some suggestions. Return with our drinks and the infamous butter rolls and jelly. They were delicious. After a brief wait, our food arrived and looked great. Stopped by hear on a Monday morning to try the famous Cocoa Puffs and was not disappointed! When I arrived it was a challenge to find parking like most places in Oahu. I was lucky and able to secure a spot in front. Once inside I ordered a variety of items... two Cocoa Puffs and two match puffs along with an Au pan and tuna ham roll. All items ordered were decadent, delicious, and fairly priced. The bakery was fairly crowded but the line moved quickly and I received my items quickly. This location is small and cozy with a good amount of seating inside for the size of the store. Note I did take my items to go and enjoyed them in the car. Just goes to show that Liliha seems to be infamous along with Leonard's. I had a malasada since pokemon taught me the term. Not bad. The malasada offered at Lilihas seems to be doughy rather than generous with the filling. I like that Lilihas has a lunch menu as well as bar seating. The Service Counter is always right there for your every need. Plus the waitresses will come to check on you numerous times to make sure you have what you need. Plus it's fun to watch your food being prepared in front of you. I would not order the stew, oxtail soup or anything not prepared in front of you as these items are pre-made and are heated up in the microwave when you order it. These ladies are friendly and courteous. The Counter service is fast and efficient. Note Liliha Bakery has no French fries. Fried potatoes will be served instead of fries. It can be noisy but everyone sitting at the counter are nice. You can view the Menu from a QR code on the counter if you prefer. The Bakery is a happy place with smiling ladies willing to help you. I've heard this is the original location of Liliha bakery, we went twice during our time in Honolulu. The char broiled hamburger patty on the loco moco is out of this world. The staff is attentive and it is an open kitchen, food comes out quick and coffee is refilled and hot. Part bakery, part diner, this place is a classic spot to visit if you're an out of town visitor like I am. We arrived near closing time, but they still had plenty of stuff left in the bakery. I ended up picking up cinnamon butter mochi, some eclairs, and one of each of their four cream puff flavors. We also grabbed a bite on the restaurant side and split a large size loco moco. The servers & kitchen were pretty efficient since it was near closing, and we got our food quickly. It was a good size and pretty hearty, plenty enough to share between two people. Liliha Bakery is my neighborhood "go-to" for coco puffs and poi donuts for work, banana Chantilly 1/2 sheet decorated cakes for birthday parties, banana pancakes, grilled sweet bread/jelly and Loco Moco for breakfasts, and most recently a healthy avocado tuna sandwich for lunch. Recently we went in and unfortunately their credit card machines were down so it was only Cash Only...so bottom line I was on a budget LOL. I ended up ordering the Tuna Avocado sandwich for $13.50. I feel like Liliha is a place that anyone visiting Hawaii will come by at some point. We went to the original location which has the place set up as part diner and part bakery. I like the option of seeing the food cook right in front of your eyes. Usually they are busy but the we came here the moment we flew in and fortunately, there was no wait and got seated immediately. I knew I had to try the oxtail soup. We ordered a bowl of that, along with saimin, Mahi x hamburger combo plate and pork cutlet plate. The pork and combo plate came with butter rolls which we shared. Butter rolls were so fresh, moist and so buttery. I'm sure they were made with butter already but they were treated toasted on the flat grill with more butter! Portion size is big and the taste was solid. The star I feel, however, is definitely the oxtail. The flavor is amazing! It reminded me of Vietnamese pho soup but with a Hawaiian twist. Although I was not sure what to think when I saw the mini tub of soup and oxtail meat being microwaved in front of me, the taste of it blew me away. The soup (pre-heated) was jellied so think of all the nourishing collegian you getting without taking a supplement! While driving back to Waikiki, we stopped at this OG location of Liliha Bakery for dinner. There were others closer to my hotel, yet it was not the same as visiting a spot that has been around since the 1950s. When you walk in, the service counter to order items to-go was straight ahead. To the right was a long countertop with seating for about 15 customers. We pulled up to a couple of empty spots to get some local diner grub, and of course, the famous Coco Puffs for dessert. My tour guide friend ordered the hamburger steak as part of her meal. I figured if the meat was that good, and since I had not eaten Loco Moco yet during my trip, this was the time to try it. The hand pressed hamburger patty was available in two sizes (5 oz, 7.75 oz) and came with eggs and gravy. I chose the smaller serving size, however the amount of protein was sufficient. The meat was completely smothered by the fried eggs and brown gravy. Beneath that mound was a healthy portion of white rice. This Loco Moco looked and tasted better than any version I have had on the mainland. While that was being prepared, a dish of butter rolls was provided with a cup of "atomic/nuclear" jelly. The rolls were halved, buttered, and grilled to give a nice char. The jelly was bright red with a cherry syrup flavor. It added fruitiness, but the rolls by themselves were very addictive. I managed to save room for some sweet treats more than my dining companion. In addition to a Coco Puff, a slice of Chantilly Cake was split between the two of us. The chocolate cake was frosted with a butter cream made up of mascarpone, cream cheese, and whipped cream. This was a dense and rich cake but not as sugary as it looked. The same chantilly frosting topped a cream puff filled with chocolate pudding to make an original Coco Puff. The light pastry shell contrasted the heavier piece of cake so we had the best of both worlds. Our seats gave an optimal view of the cooks in action. The service from the staff was efficient when we could get their attention from multi-tasking. I thought the prices were reasonable for the amount of comfort food. My dining experience at Liliha Bakery matched the reputation I had heard from friends who raved about this Oahu institution. read more
