For the longest time, finding good Mexican food in the Philadelphia suburbs was difficult. Nowadays we have choices. One excellent choice is Cafe America which is next door to its sister location Lilly's Gourmet. The ambience at Cafe America is casual and relaxed. You order at the register and the food is brought to your table. If you want adult beverages, they prepare killer mojitos, margaritas, and I even saw something called a painkiller. In addition, there are Mexican beers which of course includes Corona with the optional lime. Turning to the food, everything I have tried has been excellent. The vegetarian chili is among the best anywhere and is also the base for the vegetarian taco salad. The quesadillas are second to none, fajitas are terrific as are the tacos and other small and large plates. Notably, the guacamole is top notch. Eh. Today I ordered a cheesecake brownie and a cup of coffee for an afternoon snack. The coffee had to be microwaved because apparently it had been sitting. Okay fair enough I didn't want to wait to brew a fresh pot. Both were given to me to go "to go" even though I wanted to sit down. I'm surprised at some of the negative reviews, and it makes me wonder if this place is inconsistant. Well, luckily for me and the wife, we must have been there on a good day. It was a lovely sunny D-town spring afternoon, and the huge amount of menu choices written in neon chalk on the walls was nearly overwhelming. I think it was the potato pancakes topped with black beans, cheese and sour cream (I believe we asked for quacamole instead) that convinced us to grab a table on the sidewalk. The grilled chicken quesadilla called my name, and the bacon ingredient ensured that I didn't have to share. :) You have to order at a counter inside, then grab a table and they will bring the food out to you. They have adult beverages, and the Red Stripe was perfect with my food. But the selection is largely limited to booze you can use to make margaritas, daquiries, etc. This place is right next door to Honey, my favorite place in the world for grilled cheese sandwiches. My favorite moment during lunch was when an older woman walking by spied my Phillies jersey, and asked me if I was really Chase Utley. No kidding. read more

Odd place, this starts the the name. Lily's cafe America serves Latin and Mexican food...ok, just a bit deceiving. Ordering requires you to stand in a line which was painfully slow to order anything including a drink, a server will eventually drop your food off. We sat outside on a nice summer day which in itself was beautiful, but the chairs are super uncomfortable and the tables remarkably small and unable hold much more than a drink and small saucer. Because of the table leg layout you couldn't sit close in against the table and I found myself dropping pieces of my food as I tied to feed myself from a distance away from the table. The cuban and a separate side of guacamole was ok, but lacked any distinct flavor. The children's chicken fingers were the shinning star here, but funny enough my daughter wouldn't touch them. I wouldn't head back unless others really wanted to go here and I'm sure I'd try my best to convince them to go to Hickory, MOMs or a dozen other places within walking distance first. read more

We are from Texas and have high expectations for Mexican/Latin American food... Although this was not exactly authentic, it's the best we've had around here so far! The food was very tasty, fresh, healthy ingredients, and good variety of choices. (brown, white, or yellow rice; brown or black beans; fresh guac and salsa/pico...) The steak was good, tender... The chicken was not fajita chicken, but shredded chicken (little dry), Cuban sandwich was pretty good, nothing special. The Salmon wrap, steak wrap, potato pancakes, and taqueria were really good! The margaritas were also really well made and hit the spot. On the downside, it is very pricey for what it offers, the place is small (but patio is very nice), service and kitchen were SLOW (our kids were starving long before the food came!)... We did complain to the manager and he ended up apologizing and giving us a gift certificate to come back again, so we were happy. We will certainly be back! read more

It's funny because I am not a fan of Lily's Gourmet next door, but I LOVE CAFE AMERICA. The two are owned by the same person and even connected in structure, but I find the food at Cafe America much tastier. It is flavorful, feels healthy, and tastes fresh. It is also incredibly reasonable and generously portioned. One of my favorites lunch entrees is the Classic Baby Greens topped with Fresh Orange and Grapefruit Segments, Thinly Slice Red Onion, Guacamole, Creamy Goat Cheese, Chili Roasted Pecans, and Lime-Cilantro VInaigrette. I always add on grilled chicken (or you can choose blackened salmon) and it is satisfying for the entire afternoon for just $8.95! I also like the Chicken Tamale, which is a top a massive portion of brown rice with red beans, cheese, sweet fried plantains, salsa and guacamole ($9.75). The beans and rice are O-M-G good. You can also get a corona or a sangria! I recommend the fresh squeezed lemonade and or unsweetened iced tea. read more

I'm in love with this place! I've eaten here a few times and I always love it. Everything is so fresh and flavorful! I cannot wait to eat there again! If you do go you MUST try the Potato Pancakes. They are a mix of white potatoes and sweet potatoes and they are topped with black beans , cheddar, and sour cream! I just went there tonight to enjoy their half priced margaritas and chips, and couldn't believe how rude the woman behind the counter was. I have worked in the restaurant industry for years and I am pretty positive that the main rule is to treat your customers with respect and kindness no matter what. My boyfriend went up to pay our bill with his debit card, once he handed her his card he generously put dollar bills in their tip jar. I am assuming that she didn't see him do this gesture because after he signed the bill, leaving the tip section blank since he tipped with cash, she ever so rudely said OUT LOUD, "Oh looks like we're working for free." What is even worse is I think this may be the manager/owner. I usually hype this place up to everyone I know when they come to visit me in Doylestown, but that will NOT be happening anytime soon. Don't waste your time. The food may be good but the service will leave you with a bitter taste in your mouth when you leave. read more

I like this place a lot! Sure, it's a little pricey, but the food is always fresh and delicious. I usually get something with salmon because I know they'll prepare it really well. The veggie burritos are great too. And the tostones! Sometimes I just gotta have them, and love that I can get them at Lily's. Other things I love include the outdoor and balcony seating, and the pour-your-own water station (with and without lemon!), though I wish the cups were bigger, because I keep having to go back (even when I double-fist). And even though I usually drink water, it's nice to know that they offer some great cocktails, if the mood strikes. Great local standby, simple as that. read more

I used to really like this place, but sadly, Cafe America is has been replaced by a bar called the Jury Room. The new place does also have food, but it's not Mexican anymore. Too bad. I really liked Cafe America. Luckily, a place called Quinoa opened up on State Street, just a couple blocks away, and it has excellent Mexican and South American food. read more

I've been pleased with the quality of food. My complaint is the slow kitchen. A taco salad when ordered by phone shouldn't take 45 minutes to prepare. First time eating at Cafe America today and it has the same format as Lily's gourmet next door. Order food, grab a table and they bring the food to you when it's ready. Cafe America's decor is cute and there are a few outdoor tables for dining during nice weather. The menu is Mexican cuisine. My husband and I ordered salads for lunch. He got the grilled Mahi Mahi salad. It was very tasty and the dressing had a lot of smoky chipotle flavor. I got the salad with grilled shrimp and mango. The dressing was yogurt based and while I liked it, the overall flavor of the salad was a little bland. I was very disappointed that it only came with 3 pieces of shrimp. Really? That's not even a full serving of protein. Needless to say, I left hungry. I was surprised because the portions at Lily's gourmet have always been generous. I also found it a bit pricy considering only 3 pieces of shrimp. 2 salads and 2 iced teas came to $33+. read more

I'm in search for a good taco place in town and I still haven't found one in cafe america. The restaurant itself is set up strangely with menu items scattered across messy chalk boards. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you, but you serve yourself water? Came in today for a late lunch and had the entree order of the fish tacos with a side of yellow rice, beans, and guacamole. Everything was terribly bland like they ran out of salt and pepper and the beans were either half warmed or cold. Only part I really enjoyed was the guacamole. Happy to say the mural that was mentioned by a pervious yelper has been covered with a more vibrant festive one and server was pleasant. read more

Well, the food isn't bad, it's edible. The food is bland and not authentic, but overall decent place for a quick bite. I really liked the baby greens salad. My fiancée got the enchiladas and they were way too bland for his palate. We are used to eating at more authentic places, so we have slightly higher expectations. This gets confusing because there are two restaurants. One is more a lunch place which serves more traditional American cuisine. However the place around the corner is Mexican and this is the best part - BYO. The prices are great for the food and you can eat outside in the summer and people watch. This place is good... it's not out-of-this-world good, but it's good. I've ordered the Vegetarian wrap twice, and I agree with the other reviewer about it being a tad boring. The second time I ordered it I asked them to add their guacamole salsa to the wrap. They put it in a little plastic container on the side, which was a little annoying since I had to add a little to each bite, while trying not to spill the wrap all over the place. But the guac definitely improved the wrap (and a little hot sauce would improve it even more). The ingredients do taste really fresh and healthy though, which is always a huge plus in my book. The veggie wrap is the type of meal where you can eat the whole thing, and feel really full afterwards but you don't feel like a gross immobile blob. So for that reason, yay, I'm a fan! read more

I would understand if they were busy, but I was the only person there. When the food came, she had duplicated an order and another was the wrong entree. Manager credited me the duplicate thankfully. Only took 15 minutes to tell us they didn't have an item we ordered which first it was black bean soup, the chicken enchiladas, and then a tilapia salad, then settled on rice and beans. I also order the chimichurri steak, which I found out is not made to order, and plantains, at least that made it out to my table. Then we had to ask the bartender for our drinks, mojitos, I guess if you order it you have to ask for it. The beans never made it and the plantains were average, the steak, at least that was just above bad. Terribly run restaurant, sub par food, to be honest, $40 dollars for 2 drinks (which happen to be amazingly good)1 meal is ridiculous, and a terrible experience, I'd rather eat chilis leftovers then come back. If this is the way the other restaurants in this group are run, don't bother. Too bad I can't give it a 0 star. read more

Overall this place was lack luster and I probably won't be back. Started with chips and guacamole which were very tasty. But then when we got our meals we were both a bit disappointed... we both had the fish tacos and they were very bland. You needed hot sauce to give it any semblance of flavor unfortunately. The portion sizes were good on everything. The prices however were a bit high considering the bland food and I expected more from this place. $40 for bland food made me wonder why I didn't go elsewhere. One more thing... they have a weird setup in how you pay for your meal... you pay up front which I found to be odd. Just a heads up more than anything. read more

Lilly's is GREAT! A group of my friends and I came here for dinner and had a wonderful experience. We called ahead and they reserved the only round table in the restaurant for us with no problem. We were a little surprised to find out you order at the counter, but it worked out just fine. Once we all ordered our food and sat down the wait staff was very attentive and helpful. We started with chips and salsa and guac which was so tasty. The chips were homemade out of flour tortillas and easily the biggest chips I've ever had in my life. Delish! Around the table we had a variety of entrees.... quesadilla, fajitas, enchiladas, etc. Everything looked and tasted so good. The margaritas were also on point. I will definitely be back to dine in and take out from Lilly's and I highly recommend you do the same. read more
