A worldly yet stately gastropub environment with none of the filth endemic to the Lower East Side and none of the gouging prices of Midtown. Their weekday happy hour ($4-$5 drafts, $5-$6 house wines, and $5-$6 well drinks) goes until 8 p.m. when the standard at any other spot is usually 7:30 at the most generous. A ravenous friend and I, having just been released from a Tribeca film at the theatre next door, stormed in here past 7:30 to find a choice between a clean, dark wood table near the doorway or two wooden stools at a nice, long, polished wooden bar with hooks underneath to accommodate all our crap. There were a couple TVs overhead, but they were quiet and inoffensive. The bartender/server was kind and attentive, and gave me two hearty pours when I wanted to try two of the beers on draft before committing. Since it was Monday, there was also a special going on; half off any "share plate." This is perhaps the best deal out of all the Monday through Wednesday deals (http://www.linenhallnyc.com/menu.html) here, because this is what we got for a total tab of $45 (including her sauvignon blanc and my craft draft): *A big cast iron pan of delectable spiral mac and cheese studded with thick and crispy but not oily bacon *Four formidably sized medium-rare beef sliders with cheddar and pickles *Three fish tacos with two large chunks of halibut each, nestled in a fresh, crunch bed of radish, salsa verde, and cabbage *A dozen dry-rubbed wings with ranch and bbq dipping sauce *Cheese-smothered disco waffle fries (regular price) with gravy and ketchup on the side All of it was excellent, truly; of a quality far surpassing normal pub, appetizer, or happy hour fare. The only moment of weirdness, aside from the embarrassing amount of food we impulse-ordered, was when the busser brought us the $18 halibut dish instead of the halibut share plate of fish tacos we'd ordered. Why would we have ordered a fancy fish entree in addition to all those share plates? Anyway, I'm not making accusations, but certainly hoped that the staff made a "mistake" so they could eat it (hey, I've worked in food service; it's not unheard of) because it looked like a great dish as well. We enjoyed all this and packed up the rest, and were out of there within an easy, quiet hour. I love the look of this place! The exposed brick on the walls and the intimate atmosphere make this a perfect date spot. The food isn't anything special, but they have a great bar and nice low tables for diners. I really enjoyed the brussels sprouts but the fish of the day (cajun-spiced swordfish) was really overcooked and dry. The couple at the table next to ours ordered the mac and cheese and it looked phenomenal, so if I dine here again I'll be ordering that! read more

This place was nice inside, had a good happy hour and was run well. The only complaint I had was that they serve a Dorito shot, which my boyfriend ordered despite his better judgement. When we asked the bartender if he's had it before, he said no - and I'm assuming that is why it is still on the menu. DO NOT GET THE DORITO SHOT. It literally tastes like the taste in your mouth right before you vomit. It was so hard to keep down. Linen Hall, you're a great place to have a happy hour drink. Very similar to Penny Farthing and oftentimes just as crowded, I rarely ever get to really enjoy you as much as I would like. I'm happy that you're consistently crowded. I'm also happy that your happy hour is pretty generous. $5 well drinks are very nice. It's just not the most comfortable setting in which to sit and catch up with friends at the bar. The stools high, the bar low. I'm getting picky aren't I. I enjoyed this place and I should probably try your food some time. The bartenders are great. The selection on tap is good too. I guess I was just a little uncomfortable on a hot, summer evening squooshed between big groups hovering around the bar. Not your fault. 3.5 stars... Linen Hall is one of the classier bars I've been to in awhile, the interior is beautiful as are a lot of the people (the girls anyway) who come here. Predictable, the prices follow suit: drafts are $7-8 (some of the bottles are a little less), and meals are mostly $12-18. I got the patty melt ($15) which was very tasty but was over cooked as were the shoestring fries which were crunchy all the way through. The menu offering is an upscale version of a regular bar menu and despite my food being overcooked, it seems like they generally care about what's coming out of the kitchen. If I wanted to bring someone to a nice bar/gastropub I'm sure I'd have Linen Hall on the back of my mind but for an regular place, it's not my cup of tea. read more

This was a pleasant surprise! Came here by way of Yelp (thank you by the way). My friend and I really came here for drink and were surprised by the good food. We ordered the The Roaster (Half roasted chicken w/ spinach and mashed potatoes) and the Disco Fries. Both of which were - awesome! As for beer, I got the Veltin's Pilsner. This was quite amazing- light, crisp and a great overall brew. I was very impressed by this place - from the service, the food, the beer tap selection and the general wine/liquor selection as well. Great place to stop by on your night out or even just hang for several drinks/food. The actual bar is pretty big and has an open window - so its a nice place for the spring/summer time. This was my first time at Linen Hall for a corporate team event and I can't wait to go back! The staff was so friendly and extremely accommodating, especially for a large group of people. Had my 30th bday here in May and had a great time - the staff was accomodating and we did an open bar option plus a variety of food platters - food came out at the perfect pace and we ordered the perfect amount of food. They set up a "private" area in the back bar area which was nice with tables/chairs for my family and friends to sit at. I've never been here at night, but I've eaten brunch here about three to four times, and it's fairly solid for that. The best feature is probably the price--it's kind of difficult to find a place around the Village that will feed you for $10 these days. The food is a bit uneven--I liked the berry pancakes, but the Southwestern omelet wasn't all that flavorful. Coffee is okay. They share a kitchen and staff with Penny Farthing, but I don't want to eat in a restaurant with such an unappetizing name. (Yes, yes, I know what "Farthing" is, but it's still messing with my appetite.) So Linen Hall might have gotten 3 stars, but it gets an extra for having a less silly name. read more

I love love love this place. It's my favorite place to go to for brunch solely for their avocado toast. it's so good I've tried to recreate it myself at home and failed. It's not too over doused in avocado and the toast itself has the crusts cut off and drizzled in olive oil. the eggs are always perfectly poached (HOW?!) they also do a killer bloody mary. What I like most about this place is, although they share a kitchen with Their next door neighbor the penny farthing, which is always packed, linen hall always has space and isn't too over crowded. My ideal Friday night these days? Drinking a couple, enjoying some yummy apps and sleeping by 11. That's what you can get out of Linen Hall. Beer / wine is 5/6 bucks during hh and the food is legit. I suggest the beer battered onion rings (sauce is bomb) and the homemade chips and dip. I love the bartenders and the vibe is always just enough. Never too crowded or at least if it is they manage to create a space that never feels over crowded. On the quieter weeknights its perfect for catching up with close friends or a quiet yet trendy starter place for a first date. This place is a sister bar and next door to Penny Farthing! We came here for a quick brunch and it definitely delivered! We came here on a Sunday around 2:30 and were seated immediately! I had the eggs in a nest and it was delicious! And my bf had the seared tuna salad and said it was delicious as well! Connected to Penny Farthing this calmer, more restaurant style pub uses the same kitchen. The menus are slightly different but identical for brunch. It's a very nice set up and welcoming place to meet up with friends. Food is average and they are still getting used to the flow but I think that there is a ton of potential. It is definitely worth checking out. This is especially true now that the Smith is becoming slightly overpriced and Linen Hall is almost a direct competitor for the area. read more
