Can't miss this place, there is a huge sign out front. The parking lot is not that big but there seems to be parking on the side. The place itself is a nice size, wooden tables, huge communo table in the middle, and concrete/brick walls. The atmosphere is chill and casual. They have a great selection of beer, I really enjoyed the Tart Lychee...deliciously refreshing with a sour kick. I enjoyed the Smoked Chicken and Mango Jalapeño...spicy and sweet...loved it! There were a lot of toppings to chose from (sweet peppers, sauerkraut, onions, lettuce, tomato, cheese, beets, pickles, etc.) Two toppings free, I went with cheese and tomato...I was happy :) The fries are pretty tasty too, crispy, not too oily or salty, and two dipping sauces included. The ranch was good, the spicy ketchup wasn't impressive. Overall, sausages are good, fries are delicious, great beers, chill spot, and very friendly staff...specially Eric, he's cool people. I had stopped at Starbucks yesterday, and noticed next to the 55 Degree Wine store a new place. Doors were open, but no sign up yet over the place. Turns out it's "Link N Hops," a Sausage and Beer eatery, in their 'soft-open' phase. Apparently they opened up just a few days ago (and is owned or co-owned by 55 Degree). Well, being originally from Chicago, I love good sausage so gave it a try. They have numerous varieties, I went with the Spicy Pork Sausage. It was excellent. Not overly spicy, just right, and you have your choice of various toppings. I chose the roasted peppers, which were a very nice compliment. The bun was also great, very fresh and perfect for the sausage. Price-wise, it's decent ($6.50), not overly inflated. And it was so good, that I went back today, tried the BBQ Pork Sausage, and it was also excellent. They have many beers on tap, haven't tried those yet. Nice to see a new eatery in the neighborhood, with good food, decently priced. Hope they have a good launch and maintain good quality! read more

Can I pour my own beer next time? This young lady who served us truly had NO IDEA how to pour beer. She had an inch of beer & the rest foam & would let it settle then scoop out some foam (It made it taste Awful & flat). We sat at the bar & she did this to every single beer. I want my tip to solely go to the perfectly cooked sausages & amazing sauces! We would have stayed longer, but I couldn't bring myself to waste money on awful pours. The Sunland location also has an issue pouring beer, but not nearly as bad. I would recommend to the owner to train the employees better, considering it is the second half of the name. read more

My husband and I have tried to enjoy this place 3 times. It's just a really mediocre and borderline crappy restaurant/bar. The food is nothing at all special. For some reason there are other places with the exact same food, but it never tastes good here. Not sure what that's about. It's too dark, the staff is annoyingly entitled + unhelpful and the beer selection is totes lacking on the Belgium side. Plus they have all this marketing and signs for beers they never have....I see a mat and ask if they have that one- nope. What about that one that's hanging on the wall? Staff could engage much better around beer offerings, my friends were put off by aloof attitude when we asked specific questions. An odd service ethic permeates the place, staff feel like you owe them something and their job is to merely oblige. Somebody sitting at the bar walked into the kitchen and grabbed some fries and ate them, assuming it was an off duty personnel? Major issue with prep: in no world, especially sausage land, is it acceptable to serve cooked jalapeños with the seeds intact. Completely ruined the sausage and eating experience. Um, the music. Nine straight songs of System of a Down isn't appetizing. If this was a dive bar or something I'd understand but we decided to leave because the music was so bad. I went through a Seinfeld-y crisis here. I closed my open tab and got my debit card receipt. I planned to leave my tip in cash, so I signed it and indicated I was not leaving a tip on my card. The bartender had to take care of something while I was signing my receipt, so he didn't see me put cash in the tip jar. It was, like, a 20% tip. I decided not to say anything. Link N Hops was delicious. I dare say that I liked it better than Wurstkuche. It's much smaller and less of a "scene". No waiting in a long line to place your order just to go to a huge back room that has plenty of seating for everyone. For some, the scene might be a draw, and for some it might be a deterrent. Either way, judging solely on the food, I do think Link N Hops is a little better (at least for the chicken sausage). The sausages are definitely bigger although a smidge pricier. I had the Chicken Ortega which was amazing (Chicken, Pepper Jack Cheese, Jalapeno , Spices) and the fries were perfect too. Don't get me wrong, both are great and I'd go back to either one in a heartbeat, but Wurstkuche just seems to have more of a "buzz" when Link N Hops is just as good (if not better!). read more

I appreciate that this place has a lot of vegan/vegetarian options. The vegan kielbasa was on point! I had it with sauteed onions and spicy mixed pickles. I'll pass on the crazy fries next time - regular fries would have been much better. The nacho cheese and other toppings on the fries just didn't mesh well. All right Link n hops, let's talk about this bolillo nonsense. A bolillo is not an acceptable bun for a sausage. The shape of the meat should dictate the shape of the bread that carries it to your mouth (and should also corral the toppings). The link in the bolillo curves upwards and creates two dead zones in the meal -- one on each end. These "dead zones" are meat-empty and the doughy-ass roll sucks up ALL the ketchup and mustard. I had to dress each bite with a squirt of this or that, just to get a satisfying mouthful (that's what she said). They're too dense, too big, and frankly is what keeps me from ever eating there. I decided to give it one last go over the weekend, but between being ignored for the first few minutes we were standing at the order counter (just saying "hey I'll be with you in a minute" goes a LONG WAY), the huge bun and the dirty tables, I just can't continue to give this place my business. Think of Wurstküche without the hipster vibe, except it is located in a hipster neighborhood. Link n Hops seems to be more of a mom and pop shop. They offer specials and certain attractions on particular nights of the week. I felt that they do more for creating an atmosphere in which guests can feel more engaged. Aside from all the sausage options available, there are also other things on the menu, such as salads and other sides. Their fries were the best I've had in a while, and they were just simple fries. I had the smoked andouille and my girlfriend had the chicken fajita sausage I believe. Both were completely satisfying. The spicy peppers they put over my girlfriends sausage really weren't playing. I guess you can say this place is geared more for the sports fanatics. Expect to have tvs around the walls and flags hanging from above. You can't expect some artsy fartsy environment. They've got the essentials, a nice tap line and great sausages, that's all that matters. In my opinion, I left this place more satisfied than when I left Wurstküche. read more

If you've been to Würstküche, you won't see anything new or surprising at Link N Hops, which seems like a knock-off without any real innovation. They have a private parking lot, although it's very small. There's metered 1-hour parking on the street, and it's not too difficult to find a spot in the surrounding neighborhood. Link N Hops has a nice beer selection, for decent prices. If you go during happy hour (5 - 7 everyday, I believe), $2 is knocked off the price of each beer, which makes this a nice place to go and have a drink or two. The Belgian style fries ($3.50 for a small; $5 for a large) were excellent! They have a variety of dipping sauces, but I wasn't very impressed with what I tried: chipotle aioli tasted like mayo with some spices, and spicy Hawaiian plum BBQ gets points for uniqueness, but not for flavor -- and it doesn't taste like BBQ at all. They have a decent variety of special sausages, with a lot of vegan options (last time I was at Würstküche, there was only one vegan choice.) But you won't find the same variety of exotic meats as you'll find at the other place. I tried an elk sausage with apple, and my partner had pork with cheese. Both were quite tasty, though the elk was better. They're served on bolillo buns, which are a decent (though not stand-out) choice. One nice thing about Link N Hops is that you can choose 2 toppings for your sausage, including cheeses. Sauteed onions and bleu cheese compliment the elk sausage nicely! The guy who took my order at the counter was friendly but clueless. First, I had to remind him it was happy hour; I don't think I would have gotten a discount otherwise. Then he couldn't figure out how to enter our beers into the cash register. And then he couldn't remember which beer was which when he brought them over, though he was nice enough to pour a small sample of the beer I'd ordered, so I could taste test the two and figure it out myself. I might be back for happy hour beers and fries; not sure if I'd spring for the sausage again, though. read more

The Belgian fries are great and I'd recommend the Chipotle mayo or BBQ Plum sauce. They have a Live Music Night on Mondays and Trivia Night on Wednesdays. Both indoor and outdoor seating are available. The only drawback is the parking is a bit cramped. The free lot services Link N Hops in addition to a wine store, pizza joint and a Starbucks. I have tried this place several times now, including the first week it opened. That's not boasting, I swear. That's me telling you that this joint has been spot on since day one. Small menu, but it's not a full dinner joint. I mean, it's sausages. BUT they handmake their own sauces and they even handmake their own VEGAN SAUSAGES. And it's a nice sized menu for vegans - hell yeah! The fries are fresh potatoes and Belgian style - so what one would call steak fries. But my heaven are they addicting. Try the spicy ketchup, you won't regret it. You can add whatever toppings you want to your sausage, and it's not too big but enough to fill you up. I haven't had the beers here, because I have done take out twice eaten in once, but I did see they carry my darling local Golden Road so they certainly do choose with care. Parking could be a bitch if you think you are getting in that tiny parking lot but the neighborhood that surrounds it isn't permit and finding a spot was easy and not a walk at all. Made the cardinal sin of asking to put fixins on the links; apparently, that's frowned upon. They are serious about trying them without masking the flavor with additional toppings. Mustard was acceptable to add because that's pretty standard. You have to give it to them, they have some pretty intriguing meats in their links. Sat at the bar and met some interesting locals. This place is what I hoped-- The beers were varied and well thought-out and the sausage I had was good. I got the spicy pork with onions and a pepper. The onions were caramelized right, and the pepper was a serious jalapeño. The bun was good-- I've had some very good sausages that I couldn't appreciate until I'd removed it from a dry bun. The place is comfortable-- Lots of wood, a long table and a bar. Some other sausage places around here ruin it with a fast-food layout. I've enjoyed the place next door, 55 Degree, for years-- And this is the same guy's place. The staff there has always been keen on their wines. I didn't ask anything during my visit to Link N Hop's crowded soft opening, but the staff here seems to have the same warm enthusiasm they have next door. Sometimes when I'm visiting a new place, I take notes about it. I'm that person. I'm not sure if it's something to be proud of nor not, but whether it is or isn't, it's me. Sometimes they really help to write these reviews, and sometimes I don't know what the hell I was talking about. For instance, in my notes for Link N Hops, I have written the word "catacombs". Which seems weird. I read an article not too long ago about how easy it is to get lost in the catacombs underneath Paris, and it was actually very off putting. The only thing that I can think to associate this place with that is the hallway to the bathrooms. It's kind of a long dark corridor, and it's the only thing that gives me a vague feeling of "huh, maybe that's what I meant by catacombs." I was also very drunk... So by my 10th visit to the bathroom, I might have started to have a rough time finding it. I had a lot of fun here. They have pear cider. Pear. I've only ever heard of apple cider, but let me tell you that pear cider is leaps and bounds tastier. It tasted more like apple juice than apple cider does, which may just be a mystery for the ages. I had 4 of them. I wasn't thirsty, and nor was I looking to get drunk. I just really liked them. It made board game night a bit more interesting than past incarnations of itself (which isn't to say board game night isn't always awesome, but drunken board game night is in its own league). I'm going to be flat out honest about the food, though. It didn't exactly tickle my fancy. I ordered the vegan apple potato sausage which, to be fair, doesn't even really sound very good now that I think about it. However, I thought I'd give it a try. Sausage is novel to me, so at the very least I thought it would be fun. It wasn't very fun. Dan "the human garbage disposal" also didn't care for it. It seemed to fall in to that sad category of "too meat like for vegetarians, but not quite meat like enough for the carnivores." I can't speak for Dan, but in my case it may just be that I have a psychological aversion to things that too closely resemble real meat. I bet that was fun for you to read. Plenty of craft beers on tap and a menu with an array of sausage choices. Add to your meal an order of fries and you'll be feeling full and hearty. East siders, why bother driving downtown for an experience at Wurstkuche when someone has replicated the same offering in Atwater via Link N' Hops. There are some differences between the two: * LNH offers a wide selection of American microbrews as well as beers from around the world. WK specializes in Austrian, German, and Belgian brews. * The bread and the French fries are better at WK * Music at LNH is played at a reasonable volume level that allows for conversation. I only had one beer on my visit (Pranqster Ale) and Fries on my visit, but both were delicious. While I can't give LNH credit for the taste of the beer, I can give them credit for the pour (chilled to perfection with a small head) and the glass they served it to me in (snifter/tulip). The fries were really good. I had already eaten dinner, but tasting those fries made me long for a greasy link to accompany their salty perfection. As I write this review, I'm saddened that I didn't listen to my brain and listened instead to my already full stomach. I'll have to come back and visit to try some serious eats here. This place is pretty awesome. It has a really laid back vibe to it. We came here because we love wurstcuche so much and we thought trying something new would be fun. I couldn't help but compare the place to wurstcuche though! I thought the beers were comparable. The bread and fries at wurstcuche were overall better and crispier. The vegan sausage and toppings were definitely better at links n hops. I love how at links n hops they had various toppings; much more than wurstcuche. I got jalapeños and pickles. The jalapeños were extremely spicy but really good! Next time I'll get cheese as a topping. I think this is overall a really neat establishment and it's a cool place to get a beer without searching a whole lot for parking like at wurstcuche. They didn't fight for my business despite not having any customers. So I guess they are more concerned about having a bro's night out than running a business. Not only does Link N Hops have a sweet variety of tasty sausages, they also have a great atmosphere, plenty of brews on tap and friendly service. Each link differs beautifully from one another and there seems to be an option for all food lovers. The type of meats/ingredients used to create their goodness vary and may consist of: pork, chicken, bison, lamb and even rattlesnake...talk about a unique selection!!! Oh, and did I mention that they have a vegan option as well? They definitely offer something for everyone. What I also really enjoy about this place is that each order seems to be cooked to perfection. My food comes out fresh and piping hot, just the way I like it. We got the Debreziner, Wild Boar, Low Tide Blonde, Mexican Coke, Fries, and Pretzel. The sausages were great. I plan on trying other ones the time I'm here. The Low Tide Blonde was one of the best blondes I've had. And it comes in a nice and sturdy beer glass. The Mexican Coke is large so you may want to share it. The fries were excellent. I think this place is A-OK. I do. 3.5 stars. I used to think it wasn't okay at all, but I changed my mind, here's why: They have a late night happy hour now (Did they have this always? If so, why wasn't it brought to our attention earlier?). The bartenders are way friendlier than they were when I first came here (granted, that was opening weekend - I bet they were working out the kinks). They have TVs to watch sports. It's low-lit. The beer selection is very good, and they even have some ciders. I frequent this place more and more often over the months. There's a parking lot and plentiful street parking.
