I walked into Little Beijing just trying to pick up food for my mom. Simple. I wasn't expecting anything but decent service. Instead, I was completely ignored. No greeting, no "Can I help you?"--nothing. I stood there like I was invisible. At first, I thought maybe I was overthinking it. But then another customer, a white woman, turned to me and asked if I was in line because even she noticed how the staff wasn't acknowledging me. She ended up helping me with my order--while the actual worker, who I believe was the owner, still never spoke to me or made an effort to assist me. It wasn't blatant yelling or name-calling, but the undertones were loud. The microaggressions were clear. I didn't matter to them. To make it worse, while I was standing at the counter, someone came up to grab a box that was sitting near the cashier. They didn't say "excuse me." They didn't acknowledge that I was standing right there. They just grabbed it, bumped past me, and kept moving--rude and dismissive on top of everything else. Racism doesn't always come out screaming. Sometimes it looks like silence, avoidance, and acting like you don't exist. That's exactly what I experienced here. And the fact that it took a white customer stepping in for me to be helped says it all. Tastes like Mom's cooking! I'm Chinese-American. I'm not picky about my food. This place's food was very good. It's a typical Chinese steam table buffet. In addition to the standard choices of fried rice and lo mein (chow mein for the non-Asian folks; chow mein is fried, lo mein noodles mixed with veggies and soy sauce) they offer maifun, a thin rice noodle version of chow mein. It's one of my favorite dishes. Theirs is very good. Their bbq pork is much better than average, mildly sweet, with the right balance of tender and chewy. I also had the broccoli beef. My first visit to any Chinese steam table buffet is this dish. Everyone makes it, without exception, and its ingredients are simple, making this dish a good barometer for the food. Theirs was excellent. Good "wok hay," the flavor of the wok, the mild, smoky char you get when the food contacts the not steel wok surface. Lots of places put huge amounts of oil in the wok, boiling the food in oil. The food doesn't hit the steel to pick up that char. Most of these places serve Cantonese food, simple preparations to emphasize freshness. A lot of Chinese immigrated from Southern China, where Canton, now Guangzhou, is the biggest city. Hong Kong is also in the region, but being a British protectorate for all those years, and being a colonial melting pot, altered their cooking from its Cantonese roots. Your lesson about Cantonese food is over. Back to the review. The place is in a strip mall that is half empty. The Stater Bros next door is the main attraction. Plenty of parking is available. The restaurant is clean, roomy, and bright. They could comfortably double the seating, but there's no need since most grab and go. The broccoli beef tasted like Mom's. I was already being helped and so I let her know we were being helped and she got offended, made a face, and even threw her hands up. She ended up taking over. I ordered 4 plates all together. We came by and got the family meal for 27.99 we got orange chicken, BBQ pork was a $1.00 extra, beef broccoli, fried rice, noddles, egg flower soup, and egg rolls. We also had a coupon for 4.00 bucks off. So it was a great deal for a lot of food. Very friendly ladies working so personable. The food was just ok. Orange chicken was good. We came here on last min effort to find some decent lunch.... We really wanted and was looking forward to Carrie's Bbq, but they had a late opening that day. I chose the black bean spare ribs and chicken wings with both fried rice and chow mein. You can get both or one or the other. I drenched the rice in the black bean sauce and the noodles were ok. Unfortunately the spare ribs were not as good as I hoped them to be. Some pieces were really tough and had really chewy fat. I couldn't eat those pieces. The chicken wings were good. I wanted to use the restroom and wash my hands before lunch since I was in and out of classrooms and on top of roofs all morning... No such luck! The bathroom was one of the worst ones I've ever seen! Extremely dirty and the worse part was that you couldn't close the door completely and there was no lock! I decided nope... I can wait! Came here with my friend for a late night Chinese food craving. I ordered an orange chicken and white rice bowl while my friend ordered a teriyaki and chow meón bowl and we shared wontons and egg rolls plus a smoothie each.
