I just arrived in Bellingham for a work trip and took my Lyft to the area around my hotel to explore and wait for my room to be ready. I was on Yelp searching for a spot to regroup when I walked by this place. First it smelled amazing and then second it's called Little Cheerful - right up my alley. The hustle and bustle of a Monday morning was occurring but I was sat outside very quickly. Under the trees, listening to seagulls and downtown traffic I was actually in bliss already. My server was so sweet. She was wearing a Led Zepplin shirt and I was already like alright girl I see you! The staff is awesome here. I ordered a mimosa and the Gravlax Benedict. I am a sucker for benne's and this was the first item that caught my eye. Which is also first thing on the breakfast menu in general. The salmon was so flavorful and fresh and cured to perfection. The fresh veggies and the capers were so good too. I am telling you and all of Yelp - this is the best benedict I have ever had. I have been on a search for a long time also. Rachel (I was told to call her Mother Goose by a coworker wearing purple spandex zebra pants - nuff said) and the crew are just the perfect beginning to one if the best breakfasts I have had. Really. Location is small but clean, really friendly patrons that seem to all be on first name basis with the staff. The coffee is smooth and delicious. I had the Nerka Salmon omlette. Mind Blown! The huge chunks of fresh caught Salmon (caught by Stella the bad assed local fisher person I guess) in the omelet w red onions, spinach, garlic, tomato and feta. The hash browns (yes, get the fried onions on top) were perfectly crispy and the homemade biscuit with the house made jelly added the perfect sweet to round it out. A downtown Bellingham Institution which has been going on strong for decades - how can you not place a smile on your face when you enter the Little Cheerful Café? Now - I've been coming here since I was in college in the mid-90's and the flavors and vibe have not changed - save for the fact it has gotten larger. All I will talk about is the Eggs Benedict - as I've never ordered anything else. The English muffin is toasted with a firm crust, but with an underlying chewiness that forms a perfect foundation for the rest of the benedict. The muffin has a light dusting of butter. The ham is thick sliced and falls over the edge of the muffin. A poach eggs are added to the two muffins and the mound is smothered with a flavorful and a bit tangy hollandaise sauce. Add a side of perfectly crispy hash-browns and your mouth and stomach are in for a culinary delight. Add an bottomless mug of piping hot coffee and breakfast is served. One note - most of the servers seem stoned most of the time - but as long as they are bringing breakfast delights - who cares! read more

A coworker recommended this place and I'm so glad she did. It is a welcoming funky space and had single diners, couples, and families enjoying a Sunday morning around 8:30. It's not a big soace and was already packed. It's very well run so they were turning tables pretty quick but we never felt rushed. We waited about 10 minutes. The staff were all charming and efficient. My wife and mother-in-law had pancakes and I went with the biscuits and gravy. They were quite happy with the cakes and my wife opted for the "R" rated version with strawberries and a sausage patty on the side. She said the sausage was very good. My biscuits and gravy were outstanding! The buttermilk biscuit was fresh and nailed the sweet spot between flaky and delicate while having the fortitude to hold up to the gravy. The gravy was hearty and perfectly seasoned; the eggs cooked exactly to order (I judge a breakfast cook by their ability to cook an egg) . So I was a happy camper. Then I met the hash browns. Holy moly, these folks know how to treat a potato. Crispy and beautifully browned while still having some creaminess, and deftly seasoned. This is my kind of place - quality ingredients, prepared with skill, and delivered with genuine friendliness in a quirky inclusive environs. Makes me love the PNW. Coffee was B+. Ketchup was homemade or local. Other intriguing sauces and jams on table. A family reading some books to kids at next table. Really great breakfast. I'll be back (from Olympia) because I have to see how they approach toast (which so many joints inexcusably treat a an afterthought).
