Had dinner here recently and totally enjoyed it. I particularly like the diverse mix of flavors and textures. We started with the cucumber salad pictured below. Beautiful and delicious - my only complaint was the lack of any bread to soak up the feta mixture after we ate the cucumbers. We shared a shrimp tikka masala which was very good - helps if you really like shrimp and I don't, but my dining partner loved it! The rice and everything else was great. I think the hype for this place was mostly due to the collab between the current chef and Chef J.B. I can't comment on how the food was before they parted ways but after reading the reviews (mostly of mid food), my expectations were mid. I went with three other folks on a Friday evening at 530 (made a reservation and they have a hefty $100 last minute cancellation fee btw) and it was decently busy for the time. I've heard that they're pretty strict w the two hour time limit but our server was great and never pressured us timing-wise. The aesthetic is great, lots of wood and an open kitchen, but like others have said the music is quite loud and depending on your table it's difficult to hear others that are not even 3ft / 1m away from you. We started with the parker house rolls which I've heard good things about but it wasn't worth it imo (4 for $8 with some black and white sesame seeds on top / when you can get a whole hexagonal trays worth of similar rolls in Chinatown for the same price) and the roasted carrots (delicious but expensive for roasted carrots in a sweet, sour, and savory glaze). My fiance got the spring fried rice, which tasted very fresh and surprisingly authentic in terms of fried rice. I got the $26 hanger steak (pictured) but was really hoping for more for my money; it was about 8 slices of steak with some very pickled / sour mushroom escabeche on top. That being said it was delicious and cooked very well (wasn't asked how I would like it but it was rare - medium rare I'd say), just wish the serving size was bigger. My friend got the manti and it was like a ravioli and dumpling had a baby but the meat filling was extremely bland and the sauce didn't add much to it. I try not to write disparaging reviews bc I know the service industry is incredibly cutthroat but here I am. I'm sure the restaurant will be in the area for a long time but I wouldn't come here again; the price point doesn't jive w what you end up getting. read more

This is a Ken Oringer restaurant, also owner of Toro and Uni. I would recommend reservations. I have walked in on several different occasions and was told to expect about an hour wait. Menu is pretty eclectic with an Asian twist, and a focus on seafood with raw bar options. As it is a tapas restaurant, portions are small. For a party of 8, we got double of most dishes. Dishes come out one by one, which drags out dinner so hopefully you're not in a rush! We found the service to be subpar. As they were bringing a new dish, they would take away our other plates even though we were not completely finished. As a foodie, every bite counts, even one last small bite! This happened twice so it felt like a race to finish our dishes, which became an ongoing joke at the table. We wish they had asked before they would take away our plates. They also forgot one of our dishes which we had to remind them as they were passing out the dessert menu. And lastly, there was a swap in our waitress but was not informed. It would have been nice to be informed that she was leaving and was getting a new waitress as we waited around to flag her down only to find out she had left. And to the important stuff, the food. Must haves: -Foie Gras- amazing, one of our favorites. It is seared perfectly and served over toast and quince (a sweet fruit) which pairs well together. -Octopus- Also delicious. Big and juicy and filled with flavor. We came here for our 15th anniversary. The food, atmosphere (ate outside), and service was awesome. Sadly, upon leaving we were headed to the back door (clear glass, we came in this way as we were told we could park in back when I called, sign said watch your step) an employee jumped in front of my wife asking her what she was doing (very rudely). At that point we were already at the back door and he made us walk back to the front and around the building. Little Donkey not only has a lot to live up to given the owner and numerous shining reviews, but it also delivers and lives up to the reputation of the restaurant and chef. My wife and I went to Little Donkey after not being able to get in 3 weekends in a row. Finally, we scheduled 3 weeks out and got a reservation at a reasonable hour. That led not only to heightened expectations, but also large amounts of skepticism as to whether or not it is really that good. Well, here is a spoiler alert for the rest of the review: not only did it live up to all the expectations, it was one of the best meals I've had around the world and maybe the best we've had so far in Boston (Loyal Nine is the only other contender thus far). Even with a reservation we ended up waiting 15 minutes for our table. That's not a big deal because the bar scene is vibrant and also a lot of interesting libations. From "The one in the grapefruit" which is actually served in a grapefruit (ingredients are a secret... "full of the stuff we like") to the wine and beer lists there is something for everyone depending on what mood they are in and what they prefer. The barkeeps were attentive, quick, and friendly all at the same time while serving multiple waves of drinks to the waiting customers and servers to deliver to tables. After browsing the menu, hearing about the spicy marinated hamachi belly and fried rice special, and figuring out appropriate ordering off the menu we settled on 5 dishes across the various sections: - Celery Root Tonnato; think modern and healthier version of classic iceberg wedge - Lobster Fra Diavolo; homemade noodles, perfect level of spice, buttery lobster - Spicy Thai Street Noodles; simple yet expertly executed and not oily - Spicy Hamachi Belly over Fried Rice; easily the best dish of the night as the hamachi was buttery and firm with a creeping heat over a full dish (prob 2ish cups) of fried rice that wasn't oily or overly fatty with just the right amount of vegetables to offset the richness of the fish - Octopus a la Plancha; perfectly grilled octopus and smashed, roasted potatoes (similar to how plantains are roasted and then smashed) The impressive thing about the menu is that it is not a single note or overly heavy on any one type of cuisine or preparation. It borrows from a variety of countries and styles that gives the menu a varied and worldly feeling despite Chef Jamie's reputation for having big, bold, smoky American flare and flavors. There are a few dishes that embrace that side of his creative mind, but it does not define what the menu or his approach to food is. The one complaint we read about a few were the portion sizes and the prices. Full disclosure, I usually have to eat before or after any tapas dinner or meal due to the sizes/portions of food unless I want to take out a second mortgage. After preparing myself for this kind of situation, I was pleasantly surprised at the ample portions of hamachi belly, grilled octopus, and other dishes that we ordered versus other highly touted tapas restaurants. Little Donkey may be a special occasion type of dinner for most people due to the price point, but is not one that should be missed for anyone who enjoys a wide variety of food, worldly cuisines, or expertly prepared fare. Further, it is reasonably priced for what you get and offers a true "trip around the globe" type of experience with all of Chef Jamie's creative dishes. This has elevated it to a "must experience" dining experience in the Greater Boston area. read more

A friend recommended Little Donkey and I wanted a fun spot to enjoy the bounty of New England so I popped in at 8:00 one Saturday night in late September. It was the ending of a glorious day that my fairy godmother blessed me with. I stepped in and inquired about a table for one and the hostess had a perfect corner. I would like to thank the people in front of me in line for ignoring the texts from this hostess. A full house of effervescent patrons filled the dimly lit restaurant with energy. Little Donkey's character shined bright, accented with distressed brick walls and romantic lighting. It is a sexy date night tapas bar that screams New England. Jen H took excellent care of me and ensured me that the Lobster Diablo aligned with my challenging palette so the my dinner choice was simple. I ordered an old fashioned with a twist served over a single ice cube to double down on the classic experience. I entertained myself pondering the history of the space encapsulated in the rustic interior. The waitress delivered my cocktail and before I sipped it the main course arrived. This rustic, chewy pasta was al dente and could have used about 30 seconds more time submerged, but it offered a nice base for the bold flavors in the dish. Pomodoro sauce with sun dried tomatoes, fired in vodka and accented with bits of lobster claw gave this dish intense flavor. I enjoyed it and would give it 3.6 stars with deductions for the over abundance of uncut sun-dried tomato, the unexpected combination of cheese and seafood, and an oily finish. The tiny bits of lobster were drowned out and felt like a garnish. In Boston I have been on a lobster tasting excursion and Little Donkey missed the mark but still earned 4 stars for the ambiance, great service, and a perfect Manhattan. read more

BLT Lettuce Wraps: A great twist on the traditional BLT with lamb bacon, awesome tomato jam, and pimento cheese. Generous portion as well, great for sharing. Parker House Rolls: What reads as standard bread and a garlicky cheese spread is so much more. Light bread and just the perfect amount of schmear. Spicy Thai Street Noodles: Add the egg - always add the egg. I admire that Little Donkey doesn't take it easy on most people's delicate tastebuds and don't shy away from making a dish spicy, even if it's no DakZen's in authenticity, a wonderful noodle dish with a kick nonetheless. Manti: I've had plenty of dumplings but none like these! A must-get. Garlicky, little bit spicy, and perfectly balanced with sour cream. Overall, this meal ain't cheap unless you can have some self-control and don't order one of everything (try but it won't work). I had dinner at the bar here because they were fully reserved and it was a pleasant experience. The bartenders were really courteous and attentive. And all our meals and drinks came out on time. About the food, the Lobster Chow Fun was indescribably delicious! I mean, to put it lightly - it was really really good! My next favorite was the Chili Beef Stroganoff which was just as delicious. The ambiance was sort of a mixture between hip, stylish and comfortable which is a good combo to me. If you'd like to have a sit-down dinner, I'd advise reserving a couple days in advance. Since they didn't have space to move us inside, we just decided to brave the weather and sit outside, where they had tents in the parking lot. The tents were not structurally great, so they were leaking a lot onto our table. Also halfway through our meal, our tent started collapsing so they had to move us to another one while we watched our previous tent start leaking a huge waterfall. As for the food, it was really expensive for the amount you got. I ordered the ghost pepper chicken sandwich which was easily finished in like 6 bites. For about $15-16, I was surprised it didn't come with any sides or fries. I thought the sandwich itself was tasty and crispy though. Our waiter was really accommodating and offered to have our burger/sandwich to be cut in half so we can share and for the ghost pepper sauce to be put on the side. The vegan empanada dish only came with one empanada cut in half. And the burger was similarly as small as as the sandwich. After my lackluster lunch experience, I have to concede that the dinner was much better. I still stand by the statement that this place is on the pricey side, but given the location of yuppies it's not unusual. This is not the best place to go for a very warm day. They have an open air set up in the front, but the back booths receive no circulation between the exposed brick walls. I appreciated that they had some non-alcoholic drinks to help cool off. I ordered the beach comber since I didn't want to start sweating. They also gave us a bottle of room temperature water that I proceeded to dump into my generous helping of ice remaining. One of the other people ordered a glass of wine and they originally under-filled the portion because they ran out from the bottle... That's never fun. For dinner I went with a group of 5 so 2 dishes per person yielded 10+ options. To start off we ordered 2 of each of the oyster options as well. Perhaps I'm not an expert but they all tasted rather similar... for $3.50 a piece that adds up quickly. Afterwards we tried the BLT wraps, Tuna Poke (spicy), Smoked Kielbasa, The Manti x2, King Crab Fried Rice, Kalbi Short Ribs, Mahi Mahi Nachos. I really enjoyed the BLT wrap (the bacon was so hot!) and The Mantis! Our waiter described it perfectly that the Istanbul Meat Ravioli (Manti) tasted like the perfect last morsel of a taco. Sadly the King Crab Fried Rice disappointed me and it was one of the few dishes left unfinished. Also very strange that they gave us the Kalbi Short Ribs on a wooden cutting board, but no steak knife! We had to use our regular butter knife to cut through. The various kimchi sides were nice though. Even though I was nearly bursting at the seams, we ordered 2 desserts to share. The Chocolate Mousse and the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough served on a mixing spoon. Seriously strange it looked like it was removed from a KitchenAid standing mixer... It was inconvenient using a spoon to try and maneuver the cookie dough off. I'll admit both were good. The condiments to mix with the mousse weren't introduced very clearly so some of my dining companions added way too much salt which they probably thought was a candy. read more

After hearing great things about Little Donkey since 2017, I had been wanting to come for years. I finally came for dinner on a Thursday night with my partner. I made a reservation online for a high top, which I interpreted as a high two top with stools. We walked in about 10 mins early for our reservation and they were able to seat us promptly. However, as we were checking in, we saw a couple tables in the center of the dining room that were high tops, but with 8 seats. There were already parties of two seated at both ends of both tables, leaving the 4 middle seats open at each of these tables. We looked at each other, thinking, "they can't possibly sit us here right?!" We were wrong. The host walked us to one of these long high tops and indicated for us to sit right next to two other guests at this table. We sat down in disbelief as our elbows were an inch away from the strangers next to us. The waiter came by and asked if we needed another minute to get settled, a very astute observation, as we were very flustered and overstimulated with the booming music, lack of personal space, and the two other guests loudly chatting away a foot away from our ears. As we looked over the menu, we seriously contemplated walking out. We knew this is a pricey restaurant, and to pay $100 we were expecting a nice dinner not being packed like cattle and having to scream to hear each other. We decided to give it a shot and order drinks. I got the trust fall and my partner got the ode to Pablo. Both were pretty good and strong. The Trust fall is a sweet and fruity drink and the Pablo had a Smokey, spicy flavor which was unique. As we were sipping, we decided to order just a couple apps here and look for another dinner place. We ordered the Parker house rolls and the ricotta truffle toast. Both arrived promptly, but portions were tiny. The toast was the size of half of a slice of sandwich bread, which is extremely overpriced for $16. It was really tasty, but each of us only had 3 small bites. The Parker house rolls were quite good, with a nice garlicky flavor. For $8, we were fine with the price. At first, no one was sitting next to us on our left side, only people on our right side. As we were eating, another couple was sat to our left. We shifted our food/drinks to give them a bit more space, but it was even more cramped then. My partner bumped elbows with one of the people next to him and it was uncomfortable to be so close to strangers that I would hear them yelling much louder than I would hear my own dinner partner. The couple that last arrived ended up walking out before ordering anything. We can't blame them, as we were thinking about the same thing! At this point, I wanted nothing more than to leave this cattle ranch. My throat was sore from having to repeat myself every time I spoke, and my ears were ringing from the loud music and loud person next to me (can't blame him, everyone had to yell to be heard here). We quickly got the check and left, walking straight to another restaurant down the street where we had so much room that we could be arms length from the guests next to us, a luxury I will never overlook again. We had Little Donkey flagged on our Yelp bookmark list for a while but had forgotten about it until the manager at Compere Lapin in New Orleans told us it was her favorite place to eat in the Boston area. Figured we'd try it out as a special night out with our daughter before she went back to school and we were not disappointed. The service was terrific - I can't have anything that uses alcohol in the cooking and the waitress took a menu back to the chef, returning with a marked up copy and notes about why things were checked off. Each plate was also brought to us with the server stating that it was marked as alcohol-free as it was presented. The food itself was delicious - we had two types of oysters, the hamachi crudo, the beets with burrata, the cauliflower, the burger, and the lobster "Mac n cheese" - all were fantastic. We finished up with the pumpkin fluff ice cream w/hot chocolate mousse and a banana pudding. Sooooo good. So this was a recommendation of a great friend and fellow foodie. I always trust his recommendations without doubt and research, so off we went to celebrate my daughter's last night in town before sending her off to college. I will start off to say that the service was good and excellent! Dana was amazing and helpful in terms of managing our twin's allergies! Hats off to him, the kitchen and folks who brought the small plates. My 3 star rating is the food and cost of the food. I love tapas and have been to most of the city's best over the years. Tapas is always more expensive than regular food bite for bite. I get that. But seriously! The food was very expensive for what it was. Burger - they rave about it- but meh. My fiancé describes it like shake shack with better meat. The Korean sashimi was VERY GOOD! but $21 for 4 tiny morsels of fish is too much. The make your own BLTs we're fun. We did not enjoy the crab Rangoon. Too light on the crab, the consistency of the cream cheese was too soft and gooey. I felt like I needed a shower after. Wagu tartare was bland and forgettable. When looking around, it was admittedly a bit eerie to see that 99% if the patrons there were easily within 4 years of us age-wise (up or down). With that said, late 20's to late late 30's crowd. The bartender was amazing. He was super friendly and attentive and steered us in the right direction food wise. We had a few shared appetizers and they were AMAZING. All of them. The Ikura really could have used more cornbread. The spicy Thai street noodles were ok, but nothing special. The asparagus tempura was pretty good. The octopus was definitely the best dish we had here...I would recommend that one. We were also disappointed in the drinks. Ambiance: People weren't joking when they said the lighting in the restaurant is very dark and dim. It definitely takes a bit to adjust to it. It can also be a bit loud, so you would be expected to project more than usual to be heard. Food: Food was delicious in my honest opinion, but I was hoping the proportions to be a bit bigger given the price. I understand it was tapas style and meant to be shared among your group of people but it was hard to split that when you have a group of 3 or more. So if you're expecting to get your filling in you would have to order a lot more dishes, but that might break your bank a bit. Drinks were also decent! Service: The waiter was very gracious and helped explain the menu very thoroughly to us. He suggested the number of dishes to order based on our party and made recommendations. Incredible. Absolutely incredible. Every dish was delightful and packed with flavor. The staff was also extremely kind and helpful.

Everyone in my group was thoroughly satisfied with our meal at Little Donkey--we got a wide array of tapas and literally everything was good. Usually with tapas I find that a few dishes are standouts, but out of everything we tried I'm not sure I could even pick a favorite, because it was all so good. We tried the octopus, the kale saag, the waygu steak tartare, the BLT lettuce wraps, the manti, and a slew of other dishes. They recommend 2-3 per person, but we got just under 2 tapas per person and were pretty full by the end. The portion sizes are generous. I don't think it's easy for one restaurant to serve food from 5+ different cuisines and have everything be good, but Little Donkey pulls it off. The meal was definitely on the pricey side, so I don't think I'll become a regular here, but the food was absolutely worth the splurge. read more

First time in Cambridge, college hunting. After a long day wanted to try some unique fare and found it. Great fusion and small plate sharing is the way to go when you don't want to commit to a large dish or can never finish! Def recommend the cocktail, ' Ode to Pablo'. Yum, and hey, you contribute to ALS when you order, so your good deed for the day is accomplished too! Everything tasted great, not one dud. Service was attentive too. Josh was great, very nice. I've wanted to go here for awhile now and I loved it! I came with a friend before a Celtics game to avoid the restaurant crowds around TD Garden. Little Donkey has a rustic/hip vibe to it and would be a great spot to grab drinks after work or a place to start your night out! I definitely recommend sharing plates, so come with a companion you are food compatible with. The menu here is very unique! They offer a variety of dishes from all around the world, very cool. The portions are small so definitely order a decent amount (2-3 dishes per person)! Beware, it is a bit pricey for what you're getting. For starters, we ordered the burrata and BLT lettuce wraps! Both were great, but the BLT lettuce wraps were our favorite of the two. They come deconstructed, so it's fun putting them together with your own customized sauce ratios. The bacon was SO good as well as the fancy house made ketchup. This isn't the most filling dish in the world, so I would order it if you're looking for a lighter, healthier option. For our main dishes we ordered the Manti and the Branzino. The Manti was awesome! The red pepper garlic sauce is to die for. I ordered an Australian Pinot Noir because of a fundraiser they were having but definitely want to come back to try their cocktails! I have also been eyeing their brunch menu. I've been coming to little donkey for years... in the last week I've been twice and it's been regrettable. There are a lot of other options at this price point and to feel absolutely pressured to be out in two hours- even with a group that continues to order food and drinks, I just can't recommend it to anyone again. Food was delicious. Sizes were a definitely tapas portions so be prepared to order multiple dishes. Ambiance is cool music in a low key space. Feels a little close quarters but not too bad - not a long wait time. read more
