Tiny place that is in the middle of a more upscale attitude. If LI were in a more conducive environment were people didn't have such a semi huge stick stuck up their derriere, they would always be packed. Add one star to most of these reviews, they are just overly critical and can't really appreciate the little stand in their neck of the woods. At first, you'll wonder how they exist on such an island. Next, how should I properly park on it. Walking in, it is a shit hole that has been around for awhile. The menu, seems a little large for such a joint. Ordering is certainly kinda weird, you'll be looking down ordering cause the kitchen is on a lower level. Down the road on Central, I think Mustard's Last Stand is a much greater shit hole. This place is not far behind and for sure closing in. Anyway, don't expect the best or worst. They have been around awhile so they are comfortable in not always showing their best side. It's a hot dog stand that has grown into a whole lot more. If you are not into getting yourself or the kids a decently prepared Vienna beef, you got plenty to choose from. Going for a burger, it is a hap haphazardly formed patty from fresh ground beef and then char grilled You know this place, Crawford, Gross Point and Central. They do have enough seating unless about eight to ten people come in ahead of you. Sticking to a weekday probably guarantees a seat and even if it is not busy, expect a noticeable wait even for the most simplest of orders. read more

I went to this restaurant like a month ago and I just felt like writing this review. The restaurant is a small spot I found in Evanston. The place was really small, but it was clean and it was the only spot I found that was near my location, so I did not bother looking for another one because I liked the menu they had. Their menu is basically a selection of hot dogs, burgers, and the like. They have a wide selection, and I just ordered a hot dog and fries. The service is definitely quick, and the staff are friendly and accommodating. It was so quick that I ordered and got my food in just a few minutes. There is nothing really special about their food, and I can describe it as a nice and decent hot dog. It is good, yes, but I definitely like their fries better. Their fries were fresh-cut and were well-seasoned and crispy too. It is really a good spot and definitely perfect for something quick and good food. read more

The burgers are the best in Evanston, one of the best in Chicago. I can't afford not to go here as the prices are very reasonable. The meatball sandwich is also good- the Tribune food section reviewed it over 25 years ago. That is what got me started on this place. The owners then were good folks and so is the owner now. If you're a hot dog person, get a char dog! The place isn't fancy but it doesn't need to be. I have lived off and on in Wilmette for a long time and only checked out this place a couple of years ago. I have a serious love of cheese fries (anyone who knows me, knows this to be true). They use Merks cheese (the real stuff) and their fries are excellent so needless to say, this is my go to place. They make their food to order and I have to say I have enjoyed everything that I have eaten here (chicken sandwich, burger, gyros, BLT) and their portions are generous for the price. I only wish there was more space to eat there, but I do enjoy the tables outside when the weather is nice. There is parking, but if they are crowded is can be awkward to maneuver. When I am in a hurry I call in my order for pick up, which is a great convenience. read more

I've been eating at LITTLE ISLAND for the past 30+ years. The food is great big menu. My wife and I love the char merkts cheddar burger. The merkts cheddar really makes this burger great. They have a nice variety of French fries, from hand cut fresh, frozen and even tator tots. To much to list but it's all great. They GRUB HUB. I love that cause know I can order when ever I have a taste for a great burger. Most recent order I tried the Italian beef, I had a great flavor. Remember when ordering from GrubHub order the Italian beef dry with the ajus on the side. Thanks Kevin for another great meal. I was here this past Wednesday on my way to the library so since I haven't been here recently and have had a burger craving I stopped in for the char burger with merkts cheddar;fries and a drink.Place was very busy but the wait was worth it.Piled high with fixings,a bunch of fries and merkts cheddar oozing everywhere I had a most pleasant lunch sitting outside on the picnic tables.A ton of options are on the menu plus there is a daily special along with an everyday 2 hotdog special.Felt so stuffed and content after eating here I walked to the library on central street to work off the calories.Parking is a bear but the cta 201 bus stops right across the street.Check it out. read more

Little Island is a North Evanston classic. Great service, even better food. Hadn't been there in years, but they appeared on le Hub, reminding me of their existence. So I ordered on-line, and the owner/manager called to clarify our desired toppings, about which I was unclear. Driver was very fast, professional and very nice. The food: Absolutely outstanding, handmade, chubby-like 1/3 lb. grilled Merkt's cheddar burgers. Superb hand-cut cheese fries, try adding grilled onions! Classic Chicago style dipped combo with hot peppers was succulent and archetypal. Ribeye sandwich was large, tender and tasty. Prices are low -- lower than they could be, considering the quality and size of portions. Will be ordering again. This was truly a 10/10. read more

Stopped by for a quick dinner on a Tuesday and am glad I did. Good quality service and the food was great. I had a hot dog and the cheese fries, both delicious. Little Island has a decent size menu for how small it is. The dining area is also small but it's cozy and has a certain quirkiness about it. This is one of the hole in the wall joints I could really appreciate. As mentioned in another review, you are looking down as you order. There are two tiny tv's perched up high for your viewing pleasure. And there is even an antique pinball machine themed from the old Baywatch tv show. My favorite thing on the menu is the Vesuvius ( a burger topped with pizza sauce, mozzarella, peppers and onions on french bread) and to me it's pretty good. It's obvious that biting into it that the burger is made from fresh beef and not processed, definitely a plus. They have fresh cut fries and they are good. My favorite is they have tater tots and with a side of merkt's cheese im in heaven. The chicago dog's are good as well. Didn't expect much going in, but I was satisfied with my food. My boyfriend and I have come here so many times and I am just getting to a review. Anyways, we love this place. The man who runs it is really nice and seems to love what he does. And I love when people love what they do. The food is amazing! The cheese fries are my favorite - he uses Merkts cheese on the fries and oh my gosh is it amazing. Best place in the area. Great food good value. The only downside to this place is the small awkward parking lot.

C and I caught a whiff of the the burgers grilling. Since we were hungry for lunch, the smell drew us in under a spell. The parking is crazy; even getting to the island on foot is not simple because the traffic is crazy at this multi-steet intersection. The inside is small, old, plastered with notices, posters, etc. It was packed, but the wait for our two cheeseburgers wasn't too long and there was one greasy table open. I make the crack about the table because I'm used to Wolfy's on Peterson, which is immaculate, by comparison. Putting aside the ambiance, the staff is a bit abrupt and harried. There were four people and they were hopping busy. Fortunately another table opened up and we left the greasy one. The burgers were excellent! Period. I looked enviously at other people's hand cut fries. They looked really appetizing, but nether C nor I can down more than a burger. We just don't eat that much, concerned that we'll end up with new belt sizes. I imagine a lot of North Shore stuffed shirts are offended at the decor and attitude, but these are the elements that differentiate this place from corporate fast food. We'll be back. read more

Great local american fast food joint. Love the seasoned waffle cut cheddar fries (merkts)!!! the gyros are the best Ive had at any place (the pieces are huge and juicy). The burgers and hotdogs good as well. Overall a great value and experience. The only improvement needed is a the decor (seating), as the name says it is a little island cut into a small triangle of property by three streets. Still if you like burger/dogs/fries/gyros you wont better than this =) read more

I'd always wanted to pop by here for lunch, and finally made the trip in May. Despite the fact that parking was a little bit challenging, it was totally worth the visit. The hot dog and fries were better than expected, and reasonably priced. The service (single man behind the counter) was extremely nice, and very helpful. Got food delivered, and the delivery man apologized repeatedly and said they forgot to give him the drinks and gave me a refund at the door. I found it in the bag and ran to give him back his money outside. Would've gotten the refund I needed, but I've never had a nicer delivery man. i used to hit this joint alot with an old friend. The guy who runs the shop knows how to run his business, Cash only. Does have an Atm. Quitr busy at lunch hours. Great fries(fresh cut) and their Gyros is to die for. Also have had their hot dogs and burgers. All just great. Prices aren't too bad either.
