I wish I was more impressed by the food but it was pretty average! I'd say make a reservation on a Friday or Saturday evening because it was crowded and lively. Pasta dishes were in the $20s and main entrees were $30-40. Nothing really stood out to me so I ordered the Caesar salad and the sweet potatoes/Brussel sprout with feta side dish. The veggies were my favorite dish. Other members of our party had the rigatoni which was cooked well. The complimentary bread had a lemon zest butter and looked fresh. I wish I had room for dessert because the chocolate cake looked amazing! Our waiter was attentive and didn't rush our party since we spent time catching up with each other. Opened in October 2014 to fanfare about its California-inspired approach to produce and generalized Italian-cum-Mediterranean cuisine, thanks to chef Justin Smillie's inventiveness, Upland just seems run-of-the-mill today. The reception staff were friendly and efficient, whisking away my wool-overcoat in seconds. My spirits lifted as a seat at the end of the bar was located for me. Upland's tall street windows, double-height ceilings, milk-glass sconces, green-enameled pendants, pale panelling, banquettes, and the primacy of its bar echo the modernity of Charlie Bird in SoHo and the unfussiness of Via Carota in the West Village -- but lacks the energy of either of them. Over-use of wine bottles and jars of lemons in brine as decorative elements just feels dated now, rather than charming. Like the space, my little gem salad first-course and beef tartare second-course each lacked verve. Despite ribbons of ricotta salata and walnut vinaigrette the former lacked flavor, while the latter was overpowered by a dusting of chilies that I was not expecting. My glass of Mendocino Chardonnay served in a shapely Spiegalelau glass was delicious, as was the macchiato. Service at the bar where I ate could have been better; I had to ask for plates to be cleared. Perhaps it was because activity at the bar centered around cocktails and beer. The room was far from empty, and the appeal is obvious. Still, next time in the neighborhood, I'd likely choose Borgo. read more

Elevated restaurant with reliably good food and service. Plenty of natural light in their space, which I'm always a sucker for. If you're looking for a little pizazz in your restaurant rotation, Upland is the place on an unassuming stretch of 26th. The menu options vary depending on the season, but is California inspired, which as a native, makes me nostalgic every time I come here. Their burger is worth the hype (and sticker tag) but only if you're in the mood. Love their brunch options, which if you go early, makes for a relaxing and pleasurable experience. My toddler son, husband and I dined here on a recent visit, and it was the most relaxing brunch I've had in years. Quiet, calm and kudos to our server who had the infinite patience of an angel with our toddler (who was, thankfully, on his best behavior). Oh, limone pizza - get it. It sounds so wrong, but probably was the star of the show for me. Perfect balance of citrus zest and cheese - and the arugula adds a kick. YUM. read more

I was visiting my daughter for the weekend in NY and she suggested we came here for lunch. It's pretty cozy. The service was good as well, we didn't have to wait too long for our food. Now for the food! We ordered the Caesar salad and the steak tartare for appetizers, they were both pretty good. However, the Caesar salad had sardines in it? I didn't mind it too much since the dressing made up for the fishy taste... But I've never had a Caesar salad with sardines, not bad but I would prefer to go without it. My daughter loves a good Caesar salad but refused to eat it because of the sardines in it. The steak tartare was delicious and very fresh! We ordered the steak and eggs and the cacio e Pepe, both entrees were pretty decent. My daughter enjoyed her steak and eggs, I loved my cacio e Pepe. For desert she got the chocolate fudge cake, it was pretty good if you love chocolate. I had the limoncello olive cake and absolutely loved it, it was fresh and sweet without being too tart. We came with friends on our last night visiting NYC and also celebrated our friend's 25th Wedding Anniversary with some awesome dessert. I am so happy I was able to try this restaurant. I went to @upland_nyc and all the food and desserts were amazing. The margarita pizza was unbelievably delicious. The little gem salad as a starter was light and a great addition to the night. I also got the pappardelle and the rigatoni pasta which were cooked to perfection with the freshest ingredients and a tasty bolognese. We got five dishes to share amongst four people - Crispy Artichokes, Crispy Duck Wings, Vodka Pizza, Eggplant w Labne, and Short Rib for Two. The complimentary bread and butter was so soft and fluffy, but we were so glad to see our dishes come out within 5 minutes of being served the bread. I really enjoyed the sauces that were served with the artichokes and duck wings and had wished something like that were offered alongside the short rib - with only the celery salad, the short rib was a bit lacking. But my favorite of the night had to be the pizza - unlike a typical flat, thin crust pizza, this slice had a lot to offer: cornmeal yet airy and soft texture, loaded toppings with a deep cheese flavor. Dined here for brunch with a friend. The interior was elegant and beautiful, complete with an open kitchen layout. I ordered the Breakfast Sandwich, on brioche bread. This included prosciutto, Comte cheese, and fried egg. I asked for potatoes instead of the salad it typically comes with, which was a good choice. The prosciutto was juicy, wonderfully well seasoned. The cheese was delightfully melty, full of strong flavor, while the egg was cooked nicely. All the ingredients worked well together, making for mouthwatering bites. The potatoes were perfectly roasted, tender, and slightly crispy. Service was pretty good. Our waiter was nice and accommodating. This place is sort of a mix between Italian and New American cuisine with a moderately upscale vibe. Lobster Cavatelli ($32) - This was certainly a tasty pasta with a decent amount of lobster chunks in it. The peas were also a nice touch. However, the portion size was so small it was basically like an appetizer... except for $32... not a good value. Roasted Senat Chicken ($36) - This one was a bit more expensive but at least the portion size was decent, and it felt like a full meal with chicken, basmati rice, and greens. The chicken was cooked very well with a nice flavorful crust on the outside with juicy tender meat on the inside. While it was bone-in, it was very easy to eat around the bones. Chocolate Layer Mousse Cake ($16) - Also pretty overpriced, but honestly, I didn't even mind because it was the highlight of the meal. The decadent chocolate cake was pretty much perfectly made - nice layering of rich chocolate mousse with the moist cake layers. It was certainly sweet but not over the top. As if the cake wasn't good enough on its own, they also complemented it with a scoop of delicious vanilla ice cream on the side. The restaurant itself has a trendy upscale vibe, with cool lighting adding to the ambiance. Although there are lots of tables, it can get pretty busy during peak dinner hours, so we had to sit at one of the outdoor tables (which was not bad). The staff are fairly friendly and the service speed is pretty quick. Overall, the food at Upland is certainly good and the environment is nice; however, it is definitely a bit overpriced and for that reason, I will be giving it 4 stars. read more

Was in town a few weeks ago for work. Had a nice mid week dinner with friends that live in Chelsea. This place is super solid. I like that it's a blend of casual but has upscale options. You could have glasses of wine ranging from 16 a glass all the way to 35+. I came in a tshirt and jeans but there was a variety of clothing being worn. A solid spot with a great mix of food. This place would do really well for groups as the space is quite expansive and you don't feel on top of the tables nearby which is a nice experience in what can be tight quarter NYC restaurants. Pacing from the servers could have been improved slightly, we had our appetizer before our drinks, often had our glasses were empty and then getting a refill was tough. Especially if you wanted to pair wine with what you were going to eat, you couldn't time it well as food would get cold by the time beverage came. That was my one frustration in terms of service. The food was quite good. Loved the sausage pizza. The duck wings were super unique and great flavor. The suckling pig was nice, but not the best I've had in the city for this; tho the pickled persimmons were a great seasonal complement for some acid against the meat. The ambiance was warm and inviting (especially appreciated on a chilly winter day!). There were so many enticing menu options, yet we decided to split the vodka pizza and the lobster cavatelli. Collectively this was the perfect portion for the two of us, and both items were absolutely delicious! Came to Upland per suggestion of a few family friends for dinner at 6pm on a weekday. We had a reservation so were seated in a booth right away. The place itself is super cute and feels very upscale, trendy, and spacious. The restaurant filled up quickly and the ambiance was quite lively for a weekday which I appreciated. Service was also very good and our waiters were incredibly attentive of our table. In that regard I had a great experience. Upland really fell short to me when it came to the food though. They have a menu with different sections (smaller plates, medium plates, and large plates) which I'm guessing is meant for people to share. I decided to order a salad because I wanted that as my main and asked if they could add salmon (I had seen a pic of it on Yelp from before) and was told they did not add protein to their salads which to me was a little crazy and inflexible (??), basically forcing customers to order another plate if they want more protein than what lettuce and some pieces of shaved ricotta salata can offer you. My fiancé ordered the pappardelle which he liked but the portion size was very small. I'm usually not very critical of places but I think the dinner menu here doesn't really allow for people to order their own dish without either leaving hungry or having a ton leftover after paying +$50 for an entree (unless you get a pizza or are sharing a few things). I liked the ambiance and the service was excellent but I would definitely want to come back in a group that is willing to share more plates. The salad I got was actually delicious and it's such a shame that they won't let you add protein to it for dinner since I'm sure many people would love to just have that as a standalone meal and I know they do it for their lunch menu anyway. However, the portions were extremely small for the price. I ordered the risotto, which tasted good, but the portion was so tiny that I ended up stopping for a slice of pizza afterward. My husband had the cioppino--he said it was good, but definitely overpriced. We also ordered a side of potatoes, which turned out to be about 8 very small pieces. After getting to out table, we ordered a round of drinks. I found the cocktail menu a little limited, but went with the Paul in a Pear Tree which was pretty good. For food, we ordered the Upland Donuts for the table. I had the Two Eggs Any Style (I did scrambled with sausage). The donuts were a really fun starter for anyone with a sweet tooth. I liked my entree as well. It was very classic, but all the items were cooked well. Ambiance is super cute. Loved the way the restaurant was decorated. It had a very inviting, welcoming feel to it. Though it got very crowded, it wasn't annoyingly so. Service was good too. Our waiter was friendly and stopped in to check on us. Overall, Upland was a nice spot for Brunch.
