I have lived in Howard County for over five and a half years and I haven't thought to eat Thai food even though I do in Montgomery County where I work. It's probably because I haven't seen many Thai restaurants in Columbia so it must have slipped my mind. I did an online search for Thai restaurants nearby and to my delightful surprise, there are a handful of places. I decided on this restaurant because I read that they had lunch specials on weekdays from 11-3. They have a selection of entrees that come with a complimentary appetizer (crispy spring roll), and dessert (tapioca pearls in coconut cream) if you dine in or an additional $1.50 for carryout orders. I placed my order over the phone at 11:00 and was told it would take about 15-20 minutes. Perfect since I am 15 minutes away. I ordered the beef Pad See Ew and paid the additional $1.50 for the spring roll and tapioca dessert, and also an order of the fried calamari as an appetizer. The food was ready when I arrived. The employee who helped settle my bill was wearing a cloth face mask and plastic face shield. I appreciated seeing that she took extra safety measures to protect herself and patrons. At other restaurants and establishments I have been to, not all employees wear their mask properly. After I paid the bill and went to my car, I opened the bag to check the order. I didn't think there were enough containers so went back inside to ask if she included the spring roll and tapioca dessert to which she replied no. If you would like the spring roll and tapioca dessert for a carryout order be sure to indicate that when you place the order. I thought the Pad See Ew was good, but I've had better. There was more noodle than beef. I thought the portion size, in general, was generous for the lunch price. I actually couldn't finish it all so will have some leftovers for lunch tomorrow. If you're ordering this for yourself you can definitely divide it for 4 meals. The noodles were perfectly chewing and the sauce had a great balance of sweet and tang. To be honest, it has been a very long time since I recall eating at a Thai food establishment -or Thai food in general- so I cannot really speak to comparing their dishes to other Thai in the area-but I can comment on the individual restaurant's quality & taste. With no real-'what is a great Thai dish' knowledge looking at their expansive menu was overwhelming. They offered so many options within their lunch special- providing a 'build it yourself' format where we got to pick the protein, flavor, and add-ons. We opted for: Spicy Drunken Talay- with the seafood combination protein-adding on the complementary spring roll & tapioca in coconut milk: The drunken noodle flavor was delicious-I like how they put chopped up peanuts versus larger full peanuts- it helped expand the taste profile-though it wasn't as spicy as I expected or wanted it to be. There was a good quantity of seafood included, but the mussels in the shell took up a lot of space in the to-go container-making the dish seem smaller quantity-wise. There was a good amount of vegetables mixed within (including broccoli & shaved carrots well softened and sauteed)-creating a nice balance of flavor. Overall, this was an eat in one sitting meal Beef Pad Thai: Size-wise the dish was very generous compared to the drunken noodles- I think you get more bang for your buck, easily two meals- There were a lot of noodles, though the dish lacked bean sprouts & didn't have that much beef, but the noodles had a great flavor. Again, I liked that they chop up the peanuts into pieces & mix throughout-versus large full peanuts. It held the flavor well. The spring roll was really greasy-I ended up having to flake a lot of the outer crust off to reduce some of the drippy greasy parts- The tapioca in coconut milk was yummy yummy- I added some fresh fruit (eating it at breakfast the next day-and wish I had more!) I came here for lunch with a few friends who highly recommended it. For lunch, they have a special where any purchase comes with a free appetizer (spring roll) and dessert (tapioca pudding). I got the Pad See Ew, my go-to for Thai places. All of these dishes tasted amazing, and I was so full that I couldn't finish off my dessert. This was a disappointing father's day. The Basil Fried Rice and House Fried Rice were the same flavor. The tofu was not fried, so basically you couldn't find it in the fried rice. Both servings of fried rice were about 3 to 4 lbs each and it was full of clumped up rice that had minimal flavor, let alone no basil. The green curry was the biggest disappointment, tofu was just chopped up - not fried at all so the tofu fell apart. The vegetables in the green curry were SO LARGE that we had to cut them ourselves. The curry itself had ZERO coconut milk/cream- it was all water based. I can't believe we spent over 100 dollars for this meal and it came to be one of the lack luster meals we've ever had. Okay, for the sake of transparency I've eaten at this place several times since the first review I failed to post in August. Each time the food has been amazing. First experience there the ladies had a decent crowd so I ordered everything at once. Appetizer was crispy and delicious Spring rolls served with chili dipping that complimented the rolls perfectly, mainly because it was packed with flavor and not just sugar. I ordered Singapore noodles with shrimp for my entree and it did NOT disappoint! It was loaded with veggies (carrots, broccoli , basil) and loads of shrimp. The seasoning was the closest thing I've had to my favorite Thai place in DC and Vienna. I had to stop myself from eating after 2 spring rolls and 1/2 the entree (yes, the portion is extremely large). Oddly I kept waiting for the spice to kick in but I agree with others that the dish isn't spicy. It's just pleasantly seasoned and lovely. I could easily eat this dish with veggies and no protein. (A personal reminder for next time. ) The ginger honey tea is literally FRESH ginger tea, like the kind I make at home. Warmed my chest and my soul. They were out of mango sticky rice so I ordered the rice pudding for dessert (now you see why I had to force myself to stop eating ). It was sweet, sticky, coco-nutty deliciousness!!!! This was our first meal in the area during our two week visit from Syracuse, NY. The huge selection of food in the area was exciting and overwhelming, and after settling for Thai, this looked like the best place within our range. We went all out, wanting to try as many things as we could in one visit. I'll just go in order on their menu: Spring Rolls, never an issue at a good Thai place. These were beautiful crispy, and the dipping sauce was made for it. Larb Kai, this was a new experience for us. A heap of minced chicken, onions and greens sopping in lime, cilantro, and vinegar. Shocklingly acidic, but delicious. It was great when transitioning from one entrée to the next. Chili Paste with String Bean (Pad Prik King), was my girlfriend's favorite. It wasn't very spicy even when we asked for it to be. The beans were blanched perfectly, the chicken meat wasn't the bad kind you sometimes get at Thai places, and the red bell peppers were the best part. Perfect with the rice. Drunken Noodles were my absolute favorite. Also not spicy, even with the requested upgrade. All the veggies were perfectly tender, and the noodles were perfect. I got seafood for the meat, and wish I went with something else. Shrimp by itself would have been fine, or any other meat would have accentuated the flavor. There was a ton of squid, and a couple mussels, which didn't really bring much to the dish and added $5 to the price. No complaints, it's exactly what I asked for, but I'd go a different route on my next run (which would very likely include this dish again). Taro and Coconut Ice Cream. Due to the stressful nature of our trip, we made a point to try as much ice cream as we could while we were down here. This was a unique window we wouldn't be able to get elsewhere, so we went for it. We got stuck in heavy traffic on the way to our place, so we ended up eating the ice cream on I-95. The taro was delicious, I really liked that the coconut ice cream had chunks of coconut cream. We're definitely accustomed to some novelty when it comes to our ice cream, so eating it plain straight from a plastic to-go box was bland for our taste, even for good ice cream. Coffee. I was already looking for my next fix, so figured why not get it from here? Some places do it surprisingly well. Not this one, I'm afraid. Mediocre at best and not real Thai food. I ordered Pla Sam Rod with salmon and it was so sugary sweet, like a dessert. I think they are using cane sugar when thai cooking calls for palm sugar which is not as sweet. I also had the eggplants with basil sauce. I only counted 2 small eggplant pieces and tons of onions and green peppers. The flavor was similar to the Pla Sam Rod. Restaurant was well lit, clean and perfect for casual family dining. The service was quick and friendly. Now the food, I enjoy Thai food quite a bit but I've never had it this sweet before. The pineapple fried rice was tossed in a sweet sauce. I'm used to it being a dry dish with just the pineapples adding sweetness I recommend requesting the sauce on the side. We also ordered the ginger fish with salmon and again the ginger sauce was extremely sweet and drowned the vegetables. We were unable to finish either due to the sweetness. It definitely needed something savory to balance the meal, but I'm not sure what dish that would've been since I've read similar comments about the sweetness of other dishes. The Pad Thai was BOMB, so much so I have been wanting to eat more for the past 3 days lol. I do wish it came with the peanut sauce as it was a little dry but I keep spiced vinegar for times like that! The ginger beef was alright, a little tough but tasted good. I went to Little Spice today for lunch. After viewing their brightly colored and fun website, I was sure this would be a great treat. They have a very affordable lunch menu that includes an appetizer and dessert (of their choosing) with your meal. If you dine out there is an additional charge but you still get both. I arrived to the shopping center and found ample parking. It was the middle of the day so take that into account. There are about five restaurants there all together, all different types of cuisine. I found this nice as I work right up the street. As I walked up to Little Spice it looked closed. I pulled the door to find to my surprise they were not. Lunch was slow as I imagined it would be and I could see just one person waiting for Togo. I planned on dining in, but couldn't find anyone at first. As I looked around the empty restaurant I heard a woman's voice yell from the back asking if I ordered takeout. I let her know I didn't and asked if they are allowing people to dine in. The lights were not even all on inside. She walked to the front and just pulled out a chair at a nearby table motioning me there. I sat and waited a few mins before she came back with water. I knew my order was chicken pad Thai (went with something I knew since it was my first time here), and ordered with her after the water drop off. It came out what couldn't have even been 5-7 mins later! I love a time efficient lunch but I was left wondering if the food was cooked throughout. Or maybe they just keep it handy. Not sure. It was however, nice and hot. I enjoyed the chicken pad Thai with all the bean sprouts and aromatic onions. She brought the spring roll appetizer shortly after. Then, what I believe was Tapioca pudding or rice and cream came out. I tried it but it wasn't my cup of tea. The spring roll was delicious. The whole meal came to nine dollars! We believe this was a disconnect with grubhub, so I'm not faulting the restaurant for it. I should add, we were immediately charged for it soooo .... (we let Yelp know about this so they can look into it.) What I AM faulting them for is that they left her standing outside in the cold for close to 30 minutes, while they obviously filled the missing order. Worse, she wasn't sure what was actually happening because they never told her they were making it! That loses a star from me because communication with your customers is essential to good business. When I called to inquire about their menu and gluten free items, they were so well versed on what they had that was gluten free and what could be made gluten free. My wife also ordered spring rolls and when the (very friendly and fast) staff member brought me my order (we picked up) she made sure to tell me the spring rolls were NOT gluten-free. Now that's lookin out! I don't know about you, but it can be difficult to find gluten free Asian cuisine and even hard to find restaurant staff who understand gluten intolerances. Took my dad out for Veterans Day here. We love Thai food and wanted to try this place since it's local. It is small and casual. We were seated right away in a Friday night around 6pm. I ordered the Shrimp Galangal Soup (Tom Kha Kung). It was very spicy and and only two pieces of shrimp and a ton of mushrooms. When I've had this soup before, it has been a white broth, full of shrimp, not spicy, and tasted more like coconut. This was disappointing. I also ordered the Tofu Pad Thai. This was just okay. I've had Pad Thai at other places that was more flavorful. This Pad Thai was lacking something but I still can't figure out what it was. I like bean curd in mine and it did not have that.
