Wow! I really hate to write this review. I've been coming to Little Tokyo for many years. I've always enjoyed it here and never had a bad experience. Today was not a good day. My husband and I were seated immediately and just enjoying our conversation. I realized we hadn't got our drinks, and no one stopped by to greet us. We finally get our drinks, and another 30 minutes rolls by with not a server in sight. I found the server, and she mentioned the restaurant was backed up, which was why our appetizer came out 30 minutes late. She never returned after that and was replaced by another server who was a bit kinder but wasn't very helpful. I will say the sushi was fresh and delicious. read more

I used to love this place. But today the service was awful. I sat at the bar the hostess brought me a menu and then soon I was approached by a waiter to order a drink. I asked for the house salad and got it very quickly. But then was left waiting for about 20 mins before being asked what I wanted for a main course. This was after I had closed my menu. I looked around and he was chatting it up with a waitress and the couple she was waiting on. All the "chefs" behind the bar were all just standing around chatting very loudly. Also I've never seen a sushi restaurant that charges the same price for regular rolls and hand roll. The rolls I got were good no doubt, super bowl and spicy scallop roll. No. Just No. it's not what it used to be and what's worth they have you order and pay first, then you are showed to your table. I am a good tipper and I feel like having you too before service is simply not they way it should be. Batter on tempura appetizer was old or grease was old. Either way it was sub par quality. The pork dumplings tasted stale. Appetizers were brought with no plates for us to place our food. I felt like smearing all over the table. The teriyaki chicken tasted re-heated and dry. Three chefs are so slow and leave ready orders on the sushi bar waiting... and waiting for waiters to get off their cell phones and get busy. This is the closest place we're able to get sushi, it's always are go to when craving it. It's a clean restaurant, so far the waiters we have gotten have never given us any trouble and are always friendly with us. They've made sure we enjoy our food and if at times we don't, they don't mind taking it up and letting us order something else from the menu. Haven't been back to this restaurant since lockdown was placed. Decided to try it again after stopping by the dinosaur adventure event that was held close by and we totally regretted it. The kid who was hosting wasn't even wearing his mask covering his nose. Also had a bit of an attitude when we asked someone to clean the table for us. It has hand marks and finger prints all over the table. Also the plastic plexiglass things were covered in finger prints and sticky shit, looked so dirty you could see the layers of filth. They cleaned the table off with window cleaner which was funny to watch. Food was cold. Won't be returning. Also one of the waitresses were arguing with one of the men who were preparing the sushi. Service was super slow. They got us seated and took our orders right away, but then the sushi took about a half hour wait. No one came in that time to reassure us that our food was on its way. My friends actually wanted to leave because it was taking so long (and there were only like 5 other customers so not sure why the delay) but I convinced them to hold on because I've been wanting to try this place for so long. I ordered the Sleeve of Wizard roll. It wasn't anything special, didn't have a lot of flavor. My friends ordered lunch special entrees. Love this place, they do an amazing job, usually get the green monster roll, rock n roll, the jackie, or many possible others. The green monster is fairly hot so be prepared. I love any of them that have cream cheese, and they have a seperate menu page that shows all those types! It really is a little hole in the wall nestled in the corner and doesn't seat very many people at all (maybe 25)..but the prices are good and the fish is fresh..the sushi is the BEST in the ENTIRE area! and i hate letting out the secret but i guess you all need to know..the ginger dressing on the salad is really good (one time they put too much and i felt like i was having soup instead of salad), there are many many rolls to choose from and they also have larger meals and bento boxes for those not into sushi and sashimi. They just surprised us one day and were like here try out the dynamite roll on the house..man was it huge and oh so GOOD. The prices are SO GOOD and the beers are cheap so if you haven't checked this place out it is time to head over..the service is sometimes a little slow but they are truly very friendly people and will make your visit enjoyable. If you want terrible food this place is for you. For me to have to order after only having a couple of minutes to look at the menu and pay upfront sucks. I would love to give more than four stars, but I just can't. I love getting sushi from here (my favorite is the crunch roll, and while it's not technically sushi, I also really like the hot dog roll). They offer things other than sushi, but the majority of the menu is sushi and the other menu items aren't as tasty as what you can find elsewhere. My husband isn't really a fan of sushi and my best friend is allergic to soy and a lot of other foods there, so... When I want sushi, I order to-go. When you order food to-go, they will tell you about 20 minutes. This is NEVER the case. It's always about 25-30 minutes which is not a big deal, you just wait a little longer to go get your food. However, once you get there, you will still be waiting. If your food is ready and sitting out, you usually have to wait for someone to help you. When someone finally does help you, chances are they will have to go get someone else to take your money. It's REALLY frustrating because you can see your food sitting there and yet you just have to wait for someone who is allowed to take your money. Chances are, you will end up waiting at least 10 minutes while people walk in, get a table, and receive their drinks before you ever see this person who will finally give you your food. My husband will no longer go pick my food up because he gets frustrated (and he's the most patient person I know). By the time you get home, your hot food is cold, or your crunchies on top of your sushi are mostly soggy. Little Tokyo is the only sushi restaurant in this part of town, (that I know of) so they're always busy. One major perk they do have is the rewards card. For every dollar you spend, you get a percentage on your card and if you save it up, you can get a free meal. The more you eat there, the quicker you get free food. Will I stop going to Little Tokyo? No. However, I am no longer allowed to send my husband in to grab my food. He's tired of the ridiculous amount of time it takes to get the bag of food that you can literally see is ready and waiting for someone to claim it. Who can blame him? Came here last night (for the first time) with some friends. Was not sure what I was in for, but always up for an adventure! This place is tiny, and the tables are pretty close together. No big deal ... it's just not very intimate. I was a little disappointed that they did not have a full bar, but who cares as long as they have some sort of alcohol. I ordered a glass of Pinot Noir, only to find out that they had run out of it. Ok, no biggie, I ordered a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon ... well, they had run out of that, too. Well, let's try Merlot cause those are the only 3 red wine choices. Voila, they had it! I ordered the Flying Stevenson, which has pepper tuna, avocado, green onion and garlic on top with spicy tuna. WOW! It was so good!!! One of my friends got the Mermaid roll ... no clue what was on it, but it was so delicious! I also ordered the spicy salmon sashimi, but they brought me regular salmon ... it was very fresh and tasty. I then re-ordered spicy salmon and ordered spicy tuna ... both were so good and just the right amount of spice. Overall, it was a very good meal. Last week a friend of mine convinced me to go to Little Tokyo... again. I fought the good fight in trying to get her to reconsider her choice... but her argument was #1... that she was paying... and #2... that it was SUPER close to home. I told her that JUST because a place was close to home didn't mean that the food was good. She said... COME ON!!! Give it one more chance... and if you don't like it, it's not like you are out any money. So, me... being someone that LOVES a free lunch thought... Well, it is a FREE lunch so even if it's TERRIBLE it will be just a little easier to take because I'm not paying. So, I met said friend at the agreed time (12:30pm). This place was packed!!! Mind you, it is VERY small inside... so it fills up quickly. Anyway, she beat me there so she had already ordered three different appetizers. They consisted of Cheese Puffs ($4.00 for 5 pieces), Edamame ($4.00) and Gyoza ($3.75 for 5 pieces). I guess since she had already ordered the appetizers, the waiter thought that I didn't need anything to drink because it took him FOREVER to get back to the table to take my drink order. After I ordered and received my ice tea... I thought the safest appetizer to try first would be the Edamame. Eh... Not bad, could have used some more salt, but I think that is just a personal preference. I'm pretty sure that Edamame is Edamame no matter where you go. Next up to bat was the Cheese Puffs... I'm not a lover of the cheese, but I'll eat an occasional Cheese Puff. Again, not bad... was pretty much what you'd expect from a Cheese Puff. Now on to the one that... to me... would be the hardest to make... the Gyoza. Ok, I pretty much LOVE Gyoza, but I've also been to places where it tasted SO bad that it made me gag. So, with the upmost caution I dipped my Gyoza into the provided sauce then carefully took a bite. MMMMMMM! I was TOTALLY shocked!!! It was actually good. After that, I was able to put my guard down... just a little... to look at the sushi menu. OMG!!! They have a TON of sushi rolls... it is unbelievable. Most of them have cream cheese... and I really don't like cream cheese on my sushi... so it was hard for me to find any that sounded REALLY good. So, I read the menu a couple of times... finally decided on the California Roll with Soy Paper (Safest choice) and a roll called Laura's Shaggy Dog. I know... what a name... Laura's Shaggy Dog was made with crab, super white tuna, shrimp tempura, green onion, mayo, and fish eggs with soy paper. Being the wimpy sushi eater that I am... I ALWAYS get soy paper. I've also NEVER tried "white" tuna. When they arrived I had to do the smell test. There is NO way I would be able to eat it if is smelled fishy. It passed the smell test. So, again to be safe... I took a bite of the California Roll ($4.00 plus a little extra for soy paper)... Not bad... Much better than I remembered... Lucky for you Little Tokyo. So, again, I felt a little better about trying the next roll. Come on Laura's Shaggy Dog ($8.00)!!! First I dipped it into my perfect mix of Soy Sauce and wasabi... gotta get that right... then it was go time. After my first bite I was like... OMG!!! That was yum, yum, yum. At this point I'm thinking... Why didn't I order more? I mean... after all, THIS lunch was on my friend. I guess what I'm trying to say with all of this is... I'm SO happy I've found a good little Sushi restaurant close to home! read more

I wanted to give this place a higher rating, but I cant. why you ask? Because the service is so poor. First off, this NOT the place to go for a quick lunch. Also know that the place is small and can get a bit cramped. It always takes more than an hour to get seated, served, and pay the check. It takes a while for the server to come to your table and get your drink order and then you have the long wait for your food. I understand it's sushi and you have to make it by hand, but there's no reason my fried rice should take that long. I dont ever recall a time where the server came and asked my party if our order came out fine/if everything was good. The most frustrating part of it is that you see the wait staff (who all appear to be teenagers) chatting, playing on their phones, etc. when your drink is almost empty or you're waiting for your check. As far as the food goes, it's pretty decent (once you get it)! The miso soup is always good, so is the house dressing for the salad. The tempura vegetables are always cooked just right. The fried rice is never too oily and heavy. The sushi that I've had there is alright given the location. It's a shame that everything BUT the food drags this place down. read more

The sushi is good but takes forever to receive your food, for example between your entree and your sushi it will be like 25 minutes, then also to give you a table you have to wait like 20-30 minutes and during the weekends like 1 hour but I think that if the kitchen do everything more faster then the tables will be used in faster way, they just have 1 bathroom so you need to make a line to pass to the restroom and parking lot is small, food have good flavor. read more

Nom nom nom! This is our go to sushi spot in Pasadena! We have tried other places around but the peppered tuna cannot be beat! Love the B&K roll. We tend to add a little lime juice in our soy sauce just to give it an extra kick. The service is pretty nice for the most part but they do have quite a bit of hiccups as far as timing is concerned... There are times that the service is just way too slow but they are very nice. I'm totally torn by this restaurant. I've heard nothing but good things so I brought my wife and it was mediocre at best. The service was ok. I needed water and asked another waiter and they said "Let me get your waiter" instead of just getting us some water. I noticed one of the waiters bringing food and his thumb was close to food instead of having the plate in the palm of his hand. YIKES. I kept waiting for the Ummmph AND I never got it.
