I made my first visit to L.J.'s Deli San Rafael to cash in a free sandwich card (handed out to businesses in the neighborhood). I ordered the Subhut which the owner, Kaity (very pleasant), said they had been serving for 50 years(!). Once I tasted it, I understood why - layers of flavor and texture that you can almost experience just by looking at it. Too bad I missed out for 46 years (my whole life in Marin), but I hope to enjoy it for the next half century. LJ's is secluded within an office park (like other hidden gems in Marin), but there are signs to direct customers. I will definitely be back to try more offerings from their extensive sandwich menu with economical prices. It will be hard not to order the Subhut again...will bring my husband (he's actually the one who works nearby) and order two sandwiches to share on a lunch break date. read more

This for me is the best deli in Marin. I first came here in the early to mid nineties on a recommendation of a friend and instantly was hooked. It shortly changed hands from that owner and I was concerned, but the new owner carried on the same tradition while pulling in some of his own from running his families shop Sharkies in Tiburon. Now there are new owners in the last few months and they have pulled forward those same traditions and brought this place into the 21st century while adding their touches. This place keeps getting better. Hands down my favorite turkey sandwich anywhere is here on sliced sourdough, Swiss cheese with everything. The bread is fresh, the vegetables fresh and crisp with a generous amount of turkey. The Sub Hut special is a local favorite that requires a fork and napkins, so good. They have great pre-made salads and now they seem to have some custom salads that they spent some time sourcing vegetables they felt were the best they could find. This place is in a business park and is closed on the weekends so check this place out during the week, you won't be disappointed read more

UPDATE: after speaking with the owner, I have decided to upgrade my review from 1-3 stars, she was very sincere and apologetic, she and the manager flor are what embodies customer service and it is for that reason I will be giving this restaurant another try in the future. Threw the sandwiches in the trash as they would have probably tasted as garbage as the customer service experience I had. never ordered from this place before and never will again, purely thanks to one arrogant little prick who called himself when I asked for his name, "king". Now I tell him what's wrong with my order, to his response of "yeahhhhh just realized that when it left" no sorry no apology just a sarcastic dry response from a man...no sorry probably a kid who should have probably been fired by now, shocking how he still has a job in customer service. Hope you read this king and know you have to improve bud, you won't make it in customer service. They have the best deli sandwiches in Marin. My favorite is the Subhut Special, meats, cheeses, onions, pickles, hot peppers and oil and vinegar. I have been ordering them since 1977 when the restaurant was called Subhut. They have a wide variety of unique sandwiches like the chicken bacon jalapeño and Caprice Panini and also typical deli sandwiches like the Reuben. Everyone that works there is nice and accommodating and I am always amazed at how quickly my order is ready even if I just stop by. You can order ahead on their website. They do have picnic tables if you want to dine in. I wish they were open right now. My mouth is salivating for a Subhut special. read more

This is my third time having lunch from here. The first time it was brought to me by a friend. It was so good, I ordered for myself another time. That was so good, I ordered a Chopped Wedge Salad today. It is so fresh and delicious, the bleu cheese dressing was good, (I'm picky about my bleu cheese) not like they just messed around with a ranch and called it bleu, and all the containers are paper based so I don't feel guilty eating out and contributing to the great plastic catastrophe! So far, it's all been perfect! The staff is nice and friendly, the store looks clean and the prices are very reasonable. I am now able to eat out and not feel like I am ruining my budget, my health or the planet! I do wish the lettuce was in smaller pieces, I had to cut it up a lot more as the pieces were often long and overly large for me. I like bite sized lettuce, and it is a Chopped Wedge Salad, so I was expecting the lettuce to be chopped up into smaller pieces. :0) But that's just my preference and I usually have to do this anytime I order a salad, anywhere. so not at all a big deal. It can be hard to find, but I just look for the sign that says Margarita, easy to remember as it's one of my favorite drinks. The website is user friendly, it will save your payment info if you like, and my order is always ready for me to pick up ahead of time at a nice contact free table just outside the door! I am also the one who orders food for work events, so I will definitely be using them for our next lunch at work event. Great job LJ's, I hope you are around for a long time! My last review was a good one and very sincere. However after frequent visits since then my Sub Hut Special was not special. As seen in the photo there was nothing inside the sandwich just bread meats and cheese lacking the normal goodies inside. I know you must be having employee problems [as all restaurants are] but this new to me sandwich maker failed to succeed in building my sandwich. I know you read your reviews so I hope this review improves my nest visit and sandwich is back to what it has been. read more

Being a local, I do love supporting local, family run businesses. I used to go to LJ's when I was in high school but have not gone in years. I went in today to try the infamous subhut and was greeted by 2 nice ladies. They worked promptly and the sandwich was delicious. Saved half for hubby and he ate it a few hours later and still was delish. Will definitely come back with the boys soon!! read more

A special hidden treasure within an industrial office park near Smith Ranch Road, I go for the obvious - The Sub Hut special ($8.95) - but it is a BIG Boy portion, so save the second half for later in the afternoon. Terra Linda has limited food options, so i was delighted by my healthy, yummy meal at LJ's! This place is located in an office park, near the back. I had the "tuna salad salad". All of the ingredients were fresh and the portion size was great for the price. I noticed that they have a wide assortment of sandwiches and salads (maybe 10 of each) and the staff was friendly and accommodating. It has taken me 32 years to write this review. Last time I was here it was probably 1986. I have many memories of riding my bike all the way from Marinwood (on many occasions) to spend my newspaper delivery money on the Sub Hut Special. 32 years later I STILL think about that sandwich. I can honestly say it was the best sandwich I have ever had. And I have had a lot of sandwiches over the past 40+ years. Damn, I guess I am getting old. But I still feel like that 12 year old kid riding my Mongoose bike all the way to Sub Hut for that sandwich. And a game of Pac Man. As someone who grew up in Santa Venetia and later relocated to Lucas Valley, I can safely say that this is THE BEST sandwich delicatessen in all of Marin! It's slept on which did make me weary of sharing just how good it is, but do know that the regulars in the local office complexes are very efficient and will know exactly what they want when coming in around 12-1:30, so glance over the menu to help keep up the efficiency of it all! My go-to sandwich is and will always be The Sub Hut Special which is truly an open-face sandwich topped with delicious meats, cheeses, diced tomatoes, onions, pickles, lettuce, hot peppers, and salt and pepper all on a sweet roll. I've always been a fan of LJ's and can't believe I haven't written a review before. Unfortunately, I had a disappointing experience the other day. My husband went inside to order sandwiches to be brought home for lunch with our daughter. Our daughters sandwich was made correctly and she enjoyed it. However, the other two sandwiches were prepared incorrectly and we didn't notice, obviously, until he got home and we unwrapped them. I ordered "The Triffecta with everything plus avocado and bacon", but neither the avocado nor the bacon was on my sandwich. I was bummed but then my husband noticed all that was on his "Turkey with everything plus avocado" had only turkey and avocado. I felt his pain. I mean, there wasn't even any mayonnaise and it was really boring. Its just a bummer that they messed up 2 out of 3 of our sandwiches. We will be sure to check our sandwiches before leaving next time. read more

Yummy sandwiches and soups. My favorites are the Bah Mi, BLT and Beef Dip Nice people who work there. I highly recommend them.

My wife and I came here the other day and were sadly disappointed. 1st off they got our order wrong multiple times. Also they use microwaves or hot sandwiches which is gross. I ordered the turkey bacon sandwich and asked for mustard and cucumbers. They put Dijon mustard which I strongly dislike. Then my wife's order was wrong. After they remade my sandwich they forgot the pickles and I didn't even bother going back in. My wife didn't eat half of hers because she said it tasted funny. Probably from the microwaved Roast Beef. Although they got our orders wrong multiple times they comped our meal and gave us a refund. However I will not go back. Terrible food. read more

Just tried this today for the first time. Wife had a salad, I sampled a ham sandwich and a Bahn Mi. The Bahn Mi was really good - I am generally a fan of of Bahn Mi and I thought theirs worked well. Nice proportions on the ingredients, tri-tip used for meat was excellent. Only negative was it had pepperoncini Instead of fresh jalapeno threads but they were a decent substitute in terms of flavor. Wife liked her salad, said ingredients were nice and fresh and would order again. When we return we will order with light mayo, as the standard amount was a bit over the top for us. IMO bread makes or breaks a sandwich and their bread (tried sour roll and soft roll) was excellent. read more

I have been going here since I was old enough to eat solid food. My mother has been going here since she was a little girl. Our favorite is the Subhut special with no lettuce and get the guts on the side. I can not recommend this place enough. The new owners are just as nice and quick as the previous two. LJ's has been a favorite of mine for a while. It is one of my favorite lunch spots. I love the professionalism and customer service that goes above and beyond. The owner has excellent customer interaction, each time I come here. I'm greeter with a smile from everyone that works at the deli. Don't be surprised if the staff all remember you and your name if you come twice or more. I usually buy the same sandwich and it's always consistent in quality and flavor. Having this deli close to work is also convinient. It's great to also get food at a great price compared to other places around the same area that will charge twice as much for lesser quality and service. I ordered from LJ's for the first time today! I love sandwiches and this place was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I created my own sandwich because I couldn't pick from all the delicious sounding sandwiches on the menu. My husband got the trip-tip salad and my daughter got a turkey sandwich, even though she'll never eat a turkey sandwich that I make! Everything was delicious and hours later I'm still thinking about my sandwich. Seriously so good!!! To top it off I was able to order online and it was ready when I arrived. Just tried this spot for the first time and I was blown away. I was greeted by a wonderful lady named Kaity. I'm assuming she was the owner, super friendly and possesses excellent communication skills. I was recommended the subhut sandwich.
