Local Cafe is a Chinese cafe on Hollenbeck in Cupertino. Authentic, central, and tasty. The service of Local Cafe was subpar the servers were not attentive at all and there was no polite conversation or any smiles which made annoyed the ambiance of Local Cafe was nice with lots of seating and a cool orange vibe with lots of posters on the wall. The food of Local Cafe was BOMBB. We got the YangZhou Fried Rice which was fried rice with ham and shrimp. We also got the Three Combo Meat Stir Fried Rice Stick Noodle. I don't know why the name is so long, but it was a delicious dish! The fried rice had loads of shrimp and ham in it. Both dishes were a little greasy but they were still both delicious. They both had loads of meat. They were also very fresh and hot. The fried rice had some veggies and scrambled eggs mixed in and the rice was very loose making the dish even tastier. The noodles were very tiny and there was t an overwhelming amount of cabbage and onions like usual with noodle dishes. The ham tasted like Spam and was very savory and it complimented the subtle shrimp very well. Overall, although Local Cafe did not have adequate service it still had a nice ambiance and very tasty food. I would definitely come to Local Cafe for a quick fix and for some cheap food. I love Hong Kong cafes, and this place offers some of my favorite foods and beverages. Their beef chow fun is flavorful, with nice crunch texture from the veggies, and most importantly, good wok hei. The baked beef brisket is a must try. My other favorites when going to any HK cafe include HK style French Toast, HK style milk tea, and red bean ice drink with coconut milk. My boyfriend got a Ramen dish and I was craving more American, so I got the club sandwich and fries. The food was very comforting and hit the spot. Pretty average experience. I like that this restaurant is open late though, and they happened to be playing Super Trio while we were there! There are QR codes for the menu at each table or you can ask one of the waiters for a physical menu. Had two of the baked rice dishes: baked fish cutlet with cream sauce and fried rice and the baked pork chops with portuguese sauce and fried rice. The baked portuguese sauce dish was pretty average, but the rice was a little hard/dry due to less sauce. The pork chops were cut up when served. The baked cream sauce dish was also pretty average. Probably wouldn't order the Portuguese style again for baked dish since there wasn't enough sauce, personal preference, but I'd be open to trying another baked dish. read more

Around the Sunnyvale/Cupertino area, this is probably the best Hong Kong cafe. I grew up with 8th St cafe / Shooting Star Cafe / Gum Kuo in Oakland Chinatown, and those were the staple GOAT HK cafes. We went for lunch and ordered with the QR code. Beef fried rice with shrimp paste, Beef stir fry noodles, and Baked Chicken and Porkchop with cream / tomato sauce, along with HK Milk Tea and the free soup (紅青蘿蔔湯 - radish and carrots broth) which I LOVE. It's a taste of home. Everything was very flavorable. I think the beef fried rice had a bit too much shrimp paste for my liking, but it's a familiar flavor. It is a local HK cafe so yes, it was really casual and loud inside. Service was so-so. Not much interaction except for ordering food and receiving the check. Mixed milk tea and coffee - It was veeeerrrryyyyyy sweet but delicious. Super creamy and thick as well but I tasted more of the milk tea than coffee. We actually got this as a complimentary for one of the dishes we ordered! Egg drop sauce and shrimps chow fun - Exactly like how you'd expect it. Runny, perfectly cooked noodles, and tons of shrimps. A little bit too bland for my liking though. 3/5 for that. Fried tofu and fish filets with rice - Rice was kind of hard tbh buuuutttt! Tofu and fish filets tasted sooo yummy. They seasoned this just perfect and omg the smell lol. We couldn't wait to dig in as soon as it was brought out. Price wise, it wasn't so bad. We paid less than 40$ for our meal. I miss the taste of Hong Kong. This is a place where I found it back without going back to Hong Kong. From the seating arrangement to the service it felt like Hong Kong. Yes it is not the most clean environment but it is just like Hong Kong. The service fast and the waiter seems to have no feelings but it felt like Hong Kong. Found Local Cafe on an Asian grocery app. Their menu looked very tempting, and I was craving legit Cantonese food. Ended up getting two dishes for myself: Braised Beef Stew & Tofu Sheet with Zhuhou Sauce Clay Pot, and Shredded Chicken Salad. Portions were huge - the two dishes ended up feeding me for 3-4 meals. The beef stew was no doubt my favorite - authentic, delicious, with a great variety of fresh high quality ingredients (huge beef chunks, tofu sheet, mushroom and vegetables). The chicken salad was good but could've been more flavorful. The years have gone by, but Local Cafe (previously known as Venus Cafe) has been the go-to spot for Hong Kong/Canto food in the Cupertino area. My usual main thing to get that's unique to HK cuisine is the baked dishes, where it's meat over rice with cream and cheese and a curry-like sauce, all baked together - a sweet, savory combination with a lot of texture variation. I got the Baked Super Pork Chop Over Rice With Tomato & Cream Sauce, which comes with a sausage, pork chop, and pan fried egg - a lot of different flavor variety which all goes well together with lots of various textures. The portions may be a bit smaller but the tomato cream sauce is a bit heavy so it's filling, I could've stretched it out into 2 meals but ended up eating it in one go. So if you can save some leftovers, it probably ends up being a bit more worth valuewise but otherwise is maybe a bit pricier than the average Chinese option in the Cupertino area. Ambiance wise it was pretty empty - not many people dining in with Covid perhaps? Lots of people were placing orders to go, but gone are the crowded days in the past years - but at least it means it's easy to get seating if you want to dine in. All in all no real issues with this place personally, the food is good and if you're craving canto food it hits the spot, there's not too many other alternatives in the area anyhow so come here for the baked dishes. read more

Sad to say the food was okay, the braised beef brisket I ordered was better than the baked Portuguese rice. It was small but packed and well balanced in protein and vegetables and enough to share for two people. The rice unfortunately doesn't have that classic Hong Kong taste. I have been in the mood for Hong Kong style cafe food, especially the baked dishes. We were promptly seated on a weekday evening at a booth. There was still a lot of seating considering it was on the earlier side. We scanned the qr code to a menu/ordering portal. My buddy and I got the same thing: Hong Kong milk tea (strong taste here) and the Baked Spaghetti Bolognese and Pork Chop Rice. Please note although that item said 'rice' when you select it, you actually choose whether you want spaghetti or rice. There is a separate Baked Spaghetti Bolognese item without pork chop and there are other Baked Pork Chop items with different sauces too. Our order came out pretty fast. We loved our meal. Hit the spot for some comfort food. Perfect balance of sweetness in the savory sauce. I feel that the baked dish portions here are just right and on the larger side. Note: there is only one bathroom here, so you might have to wait in line. After I finished and my buddy was just about done, a staff member immediately brought out our check. Based on my dine in experience, I can't say the service was super friendly. It is more just in and out. When you go here, it honestly is for the food anyways. So manage your expectations! During COVID, Local Cafe, an HK Cafe is open for takeout and delivery (3rd party apps). The menu items aren't entirely consistent throughout the different platforms. Fyi, Grubhub's prices are $1-$3 more expensive than UberEats and DoorDash. Ordered delivery through DoorDash and my order was delivered hot within the 37 minute timeframe. Shout-out to the delivery drivers in the South Bay - I've had really good experiences with quick delivery and great communication via text. I usually prefer food on the underseasoned side but the food here didn't have much taste. 3.5 stars rounded up because it's a small business during COVID times. Their fried rice is always really well done, and I love the runny egg and shrimp chow fun. The flavors of their baked/casserole dishes tend to be on the mild side, so if you like strong flavors, I'd look at other parts of the menu.
