They did nail the spicy and pickled flavor on the Sautéed Pork w/ Bamboo Shoots as well as the chopped chilies with fish. I don't recommend the steamed pork belly, as it wasn't as flavorful or tender as other spots. Very smoky flavor though. Mapo Tofu is not authentic but still tasty. Can't go wrong with the glutinous rice cakes for dessert. Service was quick and friendly. Place itself had decent amount of seating. Given dinner rush on a Friday night, there was a 30-minute wait prior to be seated. What we got: - Pork ear with Chili Oil ~ great starter. Always my go to! Very addictive with its soft crunch. slightly on the oily side, but reasonably garnished with cilantro to balance out. - House special sauté pork ~ presentation was on point! Served on a clay "stove", mini wok, and metal wok spatula, this was a great activity and feast all in one! Slightly on the spicy side from the peppers, but this dish was great! As the pork belly renders out on the heat, this dish does get on the greasier side. - Mapo tofu with minced beef ~ packed full of flavor! Great addition with rice! - Yang Chow fried rice ~ includes spam, egg, and vegetables (peas, corn, etc). A great base to pair with the other dishes. We ran into this restaurant by chance and were quite satisfied by the dishes we chose. We basically chose their signature dishes that were posted on the wall. The food was lit the spicy sausage fried rice reminds me of Indonesia tek tel fried rice the Hunan special beef was good, too much bell pepper imo. Came here on a weekend night with some family friends. Parking can be limited but you could park across the street next to downtown Sunnyvale. The food is expected to be spicy and it delivers. All the dishes came out fresh and pipping hot. The mapo tofu has the perfect amount of spicy and numbness, and the fish fillet is also very flavorful and spicy. I was surprised by how tasty the soup is, it has a lot of umami, would highly recommend if you are okay with pork stomach in it! The Chinese yam and the string beans are decent. However I did not like the braised pork, it was salty and lacking other flavors and the pork was hard ish (感觉有点老） The atmosphere and decorations inside is very warm and welcoming tho, and the servers are pretty nice and attentive. read more

We ordered the spicy grilled catfish, sautéed green beans, rice and some drinks. My friend recommended getting the herbal ice tea and it was perfect compliment to the spicy fish. Spicy grilled catfish: the right amount of spice for me. I would say it was medium spicy, enough to feel a burn but not too much you can't taste anything else. I have a medium spice tolerance so some people would say this was more mild spice level. I enjoyed the veggies in the dish and the sauce, although the sauce was a little oily. Also warning there are bones in the fish though not as many as I would have expected. Sautéed green beans with sausage: tasty. The green beans had the perfect texture, with some crunch yet still soft. The garlic added a lot of flavor. I didn't like the sausage, it was too chewy and gamey flavored for me. We got 2 bowls of rice for 3 people and all of this was more than enough food. The servings were quite large. Service: you order from an online menu after scanning a qr code from the table. They quickly came out with the food and everything was pretty efficient. They came around a lot for water refills but generally left us to ourselves which was nice. You have to ask for your check. I had the boiled beef, which was among the best versions of the dish I've had, and the braised eggplant/pepper/alkali-preserved egg dish, which was also very tasty. Came in with a couple of coworkers for lunch, and it was pretty easy to get seated-- you order through the QR code on the napkin holder and everything gets added to the table's order (we had actually been hoping it would break out our individual orders for payment, but it doesn't work that way). Disclaimer, I am a vegetarian with an egg allergy. They were able to do their vegetable noodles without eggs for me and it tasted good, but I think the noodles probably had egg in them because I didn't feel well afterwards so next time I'll have to pick something else (I told them I had an egg allergy, but it's not uncommon for restaurants to forget certain ingredients like noodles have egg in them, so I should have remembered to ask). They actually also could do their mapo tofu vegetarian, which is how my coworker ordered it (she likes it without meat, and my coworkers were splitting an order of the pork buns, which is an impressive amount of meat), and I tried a little of it and it was pretty good. My other coworker ordered I think the beef noodle soup, and he was quite happy with that. Both coworkers raved about the flavorful tenderness of the pork buns. Seems like a fairly authentic restaurant based on the flavors, some non-Americanized items on the menu, and the clientele. It's not my first choice since my options as a vegetarian are limited, but it's very conveniently located and my coworkers really enjoyed it so I expect we will be going again. read more

Ordered the sauteed beef because that looked like a popular choice from Yelp, and also bean curd with chives. Both dishes were delicious! The level of spiciness is perfect on the beef dish, and even though I'm not a big fan of chives the dish very much worked together. Good food! There are few non spicy dishes, so be prepared! Lol Theres more parking towards the back, in the front is only about 30 mins. Good flavors, and the prices were definitely even better! One star off for the service, it was about 20minute wait, and once we were seated we were rushed to order since they close their kitchen about half hour before closing. 3.5 stars but rounding up to a 4 for this new Hunan restaurant in downtown Sunnyvale! Food was fantastic but we waited an extraordinarily long time for our takeout order to be ready, so I think there are still some kinks to be worked out. I placed an online order at 6:34PM on a Friday evening and it said it would be ready in 20-30 minutes. We arrived at the restaurant at around 7:05PM expecting our food to be ready but we ended up waiting until 7:27PM! Not sure if they just got a ton of business at the same time or what, but definitely be prepared for a long wait just in case. In terms of the food itself, we loved it! My boyfriend's family is from Hunan and he thought that the dishes we got were both authentic and delicious. Hunan style sauteed beef: This was a huge portion of food but know that it definitely has a kick to it from all the chili peppers. The flavor was amazing though and we had plenty for leftovers the following day. Preserved eggs with green pepper and eggplant: I personally love preserved eggs so this was my favorite dish, and I will absolutely be ordering this again in the future. The eggplant was cooked perfectly, and the green peppers (not spicy) were very flavorful and tasty. Pumpkin pancakes: This order came with 6 pancakes, and these are basically rice cakes in terms of texture but with a bit of a pumpkin flavor. I love anything with the texture of rice cakes or mochi, so this was the perfect dessert for me :) Overall would highly recommend this place if you're looking for good Hunan food! I can never completely trust Yelp reviews when it comes to Asian restaurants, particularly Chinese ones. My ratings for most Chinese restaurants are solely on the food (and not the service or ambiance) as my experience here has been from the handful of takeout experiences. Our regulars are the spicy cucumber (cold dish), cabbage with garlic, and bean curd with chives. All of the dishes are mostly excellent. The cabbage has been a little overcooked and soft at times, but it may be the fact that it takes time to deliver and the warmth from the containers might have overcooked it.
