Ok I had to update my review because recently I've gone back like 7 times. They finally GOT RID OF THE GREEN PAINTED INTERIOR!!!!! The remodel is looking awesome and the burgers and sides have been spectacular.. especially when the bald headed dude is cooking. Supreme! Stopped in for the first time after walking by time and time again. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. They have so many choices! I opted for the black bean Patty. It was DELISH! The questions for any driver driving from Reno to the Bay is where to eat. For me Auburn is the answer for breakfast ( Katrina's - there is no better) and for lunch I choose Local Heroes. They are updating the decor currently and I am excited to see it. The meat: Juicy and cooked how you order it The bun: Brioche I think. And tasty I know. The sauce: Rad and better than the In and Out. The fries: Pretty darn good. Not sure if they are homemade. The menu selection: Varied and fun They have beers and shakes as well. They don't even charge for Ranch ( which shows that they have their food costs under control). It's a good burger and better than any chain. I want my money to go here before other places. Stopped in Auburn for lunch on our way to Tahoe. We each had a single hero burger with cheese & all the fixings. They were delicious! The burgers were 1/3 lb and a perfect ratio of meat to brioche bun. The bun was toasted on the grill to give it a perfect crunch. The fixings included lettuce, red onion, tomato, and special sauce(like thousand island). A crispy dill slice came on the side. We shared a large side of fries. A male worker there called my name out as "Anus" and laughed about it instead of "Arnis." "Arnis" is an ethnic name. When I approached the counter to grab my food after he so rudely said that, his fellow coworker looked back at me as if to say "oh shit" that I had heard. I understand making fun of my name, especially since your culture has never heard of an "Arnis," but it is incredibly insulting, especially since that is supposed to be a professional environment and I do not know these people. When I talked to the girl who took my order about it, she told me, "I'm sure he didn't mean it," rather than something like "I'm very sorry about that. Let me get a manager/someone for you." Coming home from camping last weekend my girlfriend and I stopped in because a burger sounded like heaven. I initially I believed it was located a little closer to the freeway but the drive through Auburn was quite beautiful. I did not have a problem with the service which seems to be the largest point of concern among some of the previous reviewers. Sure, they do not come to the table and wipe my mouth while I am eating but I thought the service was more than reasonable. The man/woman team running the place were attentive and quick to serve. Our burgers were the best I have ever had. I have eaten burgers at at least 4 places that are nationally recognized as leaders in the burger trade (San Diego/LA mostly) and this was better than any of those. The patty had so much flavor and was well seasoned. It was cooked perfectly, not burned but a nice crisp and done just right. The pepper jack cheese was a great compliment and had a nice spice that did not take over the rest of the burger. The brioche bun was light, fresh, and scrumptious. Overall, the burger was something to write home about. The french fries were also something to talk about. They had a unique mixture of seasoning salt and pepper that was not overpowering nor sweet. I appreciated how fresh the potatoes were and how well they were cooked. In the large basket of fries we ordered there was not a single over/under cooked fry. We will drive back from home to eat here at least once a month/two for the rest of the time I live in the bay. There seems to be a nice community to walk through after enjoying a meal. Additionally, parking is convenient and plentiful. Honestly, what more could you want?! read more

UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP/MANAGEMENT! Living so close to Local Hero's I was beyond thrilled when I saw a sign claiming new ownership, new hours and better food. Because having tried the last version/owner had me avoiding this place due to bad food, terrible service and beyond lame hours. Good job Local Hero's you don't suck anymore! Family purchased a vegi burger (not homemade, but still tasty and vegan), a turkey burger and a double bacon burger. OMG the turkey burger was really super yummy...and for sure we will be getting it again. Turkey can so often be dry and tasteless...not this one! I couldn't have made it better myself. The bacon burger was tasty and average, would get the turkey burger instead, next time. Vegi burger was just a standard vegi burger...but in a meat eating town, we are just glad to have a vegi option. There now also tasty new sweet potato fries on the menu...two thumbs up :) Other stuff on the menu (we didn't have) were things like chili, BLT, grilled cheese, three sizes of burgers, floats and shakes. read more

I have no quarrel with the food. The burgers and fries are to die for! My only issue was with the cashier lady. She had brunette hair with pink ends. She was beyond rude to our little group and grabbed the ranch from her coworker and threw it on the counter instead of nicely handing it. Very rude service from her. Her coworker, the man behind the grill, was a saint and he is amazing. After we ate we saw her and some other coworkers run around the parking lot playing with water guns. I got their regular burger with added cheese. It was very tasty and was served on a fresh brioche bun. I got a good burger and good service. What's not to love? I noticed two things I'd like to mention: They have a couple of outdoor tables for people dining and/or traveling with their dog. I also noticed a sign for cauliflower served with buffalo sauce that looked interesting. If you're looking for a good burger in the Auburn area skip the chain burger place right off of the freeway and visit this place instead. read more

Our family has always enjoyed the food here but sadly we will not be returning. We are fortunate to be working so have been trying to support local businesses by ordering takeout 2-3 times per week but was appalled when I saw employees handling food with bare hands after handling cashier duties, wiping faces etc without washing hands. Additionally, one employee was extremely rude when I simply tried to offer help with the specifics of our order after he seemed frustrated that it needed to be remade after our order was lost or given to someone else. read more

Make no mistake, Local Heroes is a dive, but a great dive. A lot of "nicer" restaurants spend a ton of money trying to be divey in the same way, and fail completely. So Kudos to you Local Heroes! BURGER: The burger meat itself is pretty poor quality, but it's well-seasoned and when slapped inside a fresh, soft bun with some tangy house dressing it goes down smooth. Cheese is American rather than cheddar. The burger is definitely on the "wet" side, but this is a good thing. Real comfort fare and you will leave with a full stomach. SHAKES: Very good shakes and malts, but now jaw-dropping. Kind of expensive for the portion size. PRICE: Excellent prices. One of those joints where you just buy the burger, then pay extra for fries and sides. We ate like a family of fat bandits and came out maybe $16 the poorer. OTRAS COSAS: The fries were pretty bad. Really cheap, mealy and undercooked; like the fryer wasn't at a high enough temp. Ketchup and mustard is rationed out in tiny paper cups by the counter-staff, which is one of my biggest pet peeves and the mark of a distressed neighborhood. I have no doubt people would steal the ketchup dispensers here, or otherwise come in just to drink their fill. Service was very friendly. The décor and atmosphere was a little sad, but in a charming divey way and the theme of "local heroes" was present in photos of firefighters, motocross racers etc. Apparently, Auburn is the "endurance sports" capitol of the world so it is well-played. read more

Local Heroes shows a total disregard for the health and safety of its employees and customers. Called in an order for take-out. Went inside to pick it up. Employees weren't wearing face masks. The counter did not have a plexiglass barrier. The cashier taking orders and handling money was also responsible for handing food orders to customers. No visible sanitation of the counters or touchscreen (which the cashier used to input the order, then swiveled around and had customers sign with their finger) occurred between customers. Neither did any hand washing. The orders waiting to be picked up were placed in open bags, less than three feet from the employees preparing the food. Another order (bag also wide open) was sitting on the counter directly in front of customers. Social distancing was not practiced by either the staff or its customers. No limits were placed on the number of customers allowed inside at one time. No visible signage encouraging customers to stand 6 ft apart. Employees were shoulder to shoulder in the kitchen. Small groups of people waiting for orders were sitting at tables located next to the entrance and at tables adjacent to the counter. I've been a customer of Local Heroes since they first opened. I expected better. Was dismayed to discover no health and safety precautions had been implemented. It's been six weeks since the county issued orders and recommendations regarding Covid-19. Local Heroes has been open this entire time. Would be understandable to encounter a few of these conditions early on. But not six weeks later. A business that displays so little regard for the health and welfare of its employees does not deserve community support. I will not be returning. read more

Not much else can be said about this place that other reviewers and local's haven't already said! This place is a sort of hole in the wall establishment, but the hamburgers they produce are amazing! Definitely a nice place to stop by on your way to tahoe, or visiting Auburn. Just make sure you have time to wait, it's a small establishment, and if it's busy, you may have to wait, but it's well worth it. Enjoy! read more
