We're back for another fantastic meal at the hops and hogs barn and Grill in Lincoln, California! I brought my son with me this time he's a connoisseur of smoked meats! My son got the pastrami sandwich with a side of sweet and sassy law; I'm going for our medium well-done burger with traditional fries and a goat house Tranquilo (beer), the local Mexican ale, which is locally made and absolutely fantastic!! I got the 25 size cause I'm obviously an alcoholic! j/k, but I do love a good beer now and then! (don't tell my scrub-mate: potential fiance). The train just went by: We heard the whistle blow!! It's so cool.! there's so much memorabilia in this place, but just the right amount of nostalgia it's amazing! And family friendly! Our Serta is totally amazing. She's helping other families figure out how to use the condiment bar, which is four sauces with a very interesting delivery system. The brisket and other meats were tender, smoky, flavorful, and had that perfect bark around the edges. The sausage was delicious too, and the beans and potato salad were the perfect sides to go with everything. Portions were generous, everything tasted fresh, and the whole spread was exactly what you want when you're craving good BBQ. Definitely come hungry because they do not play around with the portions! I happened upon Hops and Hog a couple of weeks ago when I was in Lincoln chasing an Estate Sale. The menu was a little weird to figure out and I wound up ordering a half rack of ribs, a turkey sando with a side of mac salad, and a side salad. The positive items: o The ribs were very good. It took a gentle bite, rather than fall off the bone, which is the way I prefer. The rub wasn't my fav but better than many and a little sauce overcame any issue. o The Turkey sando was loaded with turkey. Much more than the DW could consume. It was terrific with perfectly cooked turkey and a discernible smoke scent. o The mac salad was also very tasty celery and green onions enhancing the contrasts in texture. o The green salad was HUGE. Much more than we expected (plate sized) especially when compared to the side mac salad (cup sized). The not so good side: o The wife wanted a side salad with her turkey sando. They offer a lot of sides but not a green salad. My half rack of ribs comes with no sides. I wanted to try the mac salad. The compromise was for her to order the mac with her sando and I ordered the green salad as a separate item. Why there isn't an option for a green side salad as a side dish is weird and unusual. o The restaurant was overly warm (some would say hot!) despite a wall of mini-split A/Cs! Yes it was nearing 100 degrees outside but apparently there was a problem and someone was working on it Per the staff). All in all, we enjoyed the meal and vowed to return. It turns out, today we were in Lincoln once again (yet another Estate Sale) and decided to try it again. This time was even more disappointing. Walking in the door from an outside already in the middle 80's at 11:15 am, it was obvious the A/Cs are still not working. It was as uncomfortably warm/hot as last time, but still warmer than one expects. Strike 1. I really wanted ribs once again and saw they offer BBQ Platters with two sides. Perfect!!! The menu board lists it like this. =====Cut from their website ============================= BBQ Platters Served with White Bread and Your Choice of Two Hog Wild Sides Brisket - Pulled Pork - Tri -Tip - Andouille Sausage - Pastrami - Turkey - St . Louis Ribs + $3 for ribs as meat choice 1 Meat 2 Meat 3 Meat ============================================ I ordered a one meat platter with mac salad and potato salad to which the cashier said: Nope! - Huh? - She said I can't order a one meat with ribs. I have to order a two meat platter if I want ribs. I didn't want, not need, two meats. I know I will be taking some of the ribs home as it is. The $3 uplift (or more) for ribs isn't an issue, you just can't have a one meat order of ribs. Unbelievable!!! Strike 2. I then learned they didn't have any ribs yet as they are still in the smoker and won't be ready for another half hour or more. Strike 3. Sorry, but no A/C, a BBQ Platter which allow only ribs, no ribs at lunch time, and the lack of a side green salad equals 3 strikes and an out of any plans to return. read more

Lunch time on a Sunday and it wasn't busy, but all the servers were super friendly and accommodating. They have a cute little sauce station that features a cow with the sauces being the udders. We tried a couple different sandwiches including the chicken ranch club, pastrami burger, and the pulled pork sandwich. All blew us away with the flavor, including the sweet potato fries which were perfection!! The lemonade was also super fresh and tart, and came in a big jug with probably a whole lemon sliced into it. Really like the ambiance. It's old school decor, a little dark but fun. We bot ordered sandwiches. Hubs got the brisket and I got the prime rib dip that came with a side. He upgraded the onion rings and I added a potato salad with my fries. Wait time was reasonable. Prices are average $20-25 pp. The meats were tender and flavorful with a hint of smokey. The sides are a little to be desired. The fries and onion rings were a tad overcooked and dry, no flavor. Nothing special. Potato salad was also undercooked and a little bit on the hard side. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. While waiting for our food, I was looking at their ice cream and she offered me free samples. Solid 4 stars. I had never been inside this building before. I know it has been multiple restaurants prior to the smokehouse it is now. Hops and hogs smokehouse looked really good online . I have been wanting to try it since they opened , which hasn't been too long ago. My son and I decided to have lunch here it was a Saturday the inside is very spacious with cool decor . They have a nice outside patio with misters for the hot weather. For food my son got their chicken strips and fries. I got onion rings and the flatbread called 3 little pigs . We also order the cornbread, which was delicious. It comes shaped as a waffle form. It comes with their homemade hot honey and butter. For drinks, my son got a lemonade. They have multiple lemonade flavors to choose one and they are all hand squeezed in house. I got myself a beer I love craft beers and luckily they had one from Slice one of my favorite breweries here in Lincoln. I believe it was called Immortal Haze . Everything was very delicious. Hops & Hogs Country Smokehouse is located in downtown Lincoln on Lincoln Blvd. It is a spacious restaurant. Big menu. Breakfast menu is only available weekends (Friday to Sunday) 7 AM to 11:30 AM. You can order a variety of both nonalcoholic and alcoholic drinks here, like lemonade, espresso, mimosas, green tea, and craft beer. On my first visit, I asked to sample a couple beers before choosing one, so that was helpful. Service was leisurely, perhaps forgetful, one late Saturday afternoon. I think I spent 2 hours there. I should have looked for a server to order and to pay, but I just waited. I had a table near the window, so that made it OK. I was one of 2 or 3 parties, so not busy at all. Service was fast and efficient on a Saturday morning, which was a peak time for customers. I was seated at a hard plastic booth table that had crumbs on seats on both sides of the table. I observed the busboy just wiping tables. During my first Saturday afternoon visit, I ordered the French Dip or Smoked Prime Rib Dip. Lots of tender, juicy meat. I don't think it was particularly flavorful despite the grilled onions and bacon jam. I should have visited the Condiment Cow to get some BBQ sauces or ketchup. The au jus was too salty to drink as soup, but it helped the prime rib in flavor. Attractive sandwich. My 2nd favorite French Dip in the Lincoln/Roseville area. I would give it 4 stars out of 5. The You Scream Ice Cream Pie was out of this world! It is made in-house: butter pecan and vanilla ice cream layers, Oreo cookie crust, Heath Bar crumble, chocolate and caramel syrups. It was huge enough to serve 3-4 people. I probably spent a half hour trying to finish it by myself. Great dessert to share with a family or friends. 5 stars! The Loco Moco is part of the breakfast menu. Although the thick burger patty was made of short Rib Chuck, it was dry or overdone to me. The rice had dry, crunchy grains in it and was too small a portion. The gravy was too salty. A little salt was even sprinkled on top of the dish. At $18, the Loco Moco wasn't worth it. The overeasy eggs were perfect and my favorite thing on the plate. 2 stars. Go for the ice cream pie and stick to the barbecued meats to have a good meal. read more

Found a new must-stop location for those coming to play poker multiple days at Thunder Valley and want to escape the grind. Just a few minutes away, down the original Highway 65, dive into fantastic BBQ, with excellent ribs, a burnt-ends treatment to their pork belly that works really well, and pastrami so good we may never get it anywhere else. Great selection on craft beers on tap, a full ice cream bar for desserts, and we need to go back because the breakfast menu looks amazing. read more

I used to come in here for breakfast all the time when this was the old kim's country kitchen. I decided to try it under the new owners. The meat was great, but there were several other issues. Having so many good things about their barbecue, I decided to try the pit, master hash. Pork, brisket, and pastrami With potatoes, red and green, bell peppers, and onions, along with two eggs. It also came with potatoes on the side, but I chose fruit. The food comes, and it was a decent size portion. The meats were very very good. I can see why people are raving over them. It came with one slice of a thick sourdough, which was also very very good. However, the rest of the meal just wasn't as great. The bowl of fruit, had a three dollar upcharge, There was some strawberries and pineapple on top, but underneath, there was nothing but grapes. There was also a dollar upcharge per egg. If they were listed on the menu, I did not see them, and nobody mentioned them to me. The bell peppers were both green and red, I don't mind a little bit of green bell pepper, but the peppers and the onions, were obviously overcooked. Because they had an acrid aftertaste to them. I asked for my eggs over easy, and instead, they were over well. There was hardly any yolk to them whatsoever. For all of this, food, drink, tax and tip, was just shy of $31, and that was after the military discount. You can have the greatest meat in the world, but if your supporting cast, doesn't stand up, then there's a problem. I may come back for lunch sometime, but for breakfast, probably not. First visit and definitely not our last! We came to Hops & Hogs for the first time today and were blown away. The food was fantastic and the service was even better. Our server, Maria, was absolutely amazing -- super friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. We tried the Brisket and Eggs, and the brisket was delicious, tender, and juicy -- cooked perfectly. We also ordered a side of sausage, which was packed with flavor, the Texas Philly Hash, which was hearty and full of great smoky taste, and the Lincoln Breakfast with scrambled eggs and crispy bacon just the way I like it. Each and every time I've been here it's been great vibes and wonderful food. BBQ is pretty tough to get right and be ready all day and we haven't been dissatisfied or disappointed anytime we've been here. The meat has been flavorful and warm. The service friendly. I'm so happy for a local spot like it here in our community from a team of people that are doing their best to provide an amazing experience for us locals to enjoy and not have to drive out of town for good food. We had a soccer party here for one of our kids and they were so patient and helpful to allow us to take up some extra space and provide an atmosphere that the kids were comfortable. Several of the lame one star reviews on this restaurant also leave one star reviews to most of the places they go. Don't buy the lie. This is good food from good people who do a good job. I've gone to this place three times now, and each visit has been a different experience. I really want to love it, especially since it's so close to home. I always order the ribs, and one out of the three visits was easily 5 stars. The ribs had minimal sauce, the meat was fall-off-the-bone tender, and the slab was juicy throughout. The other two visits were more like 2-3 stars for me. There was way too much sauce -- almost like an entire bottle was poured over the ribs. In my opinion, the ribs should be the star of the plate, not the sauce. I actually had to wipe off the excess sauce just to taste the meat underneath. The ends of the slabs were also dry on those visits. There's definitely potential here because I know they can make amazing ribs when they get it right. If you're living or visiting up in the Lincoln area, this is a solid option for BBQ or a number of other things - they also offer other things like burgers and sandwiches. I love the nice friendly vibe, atmosphere and decor here, and that (along with the location) is probably what will keep me coming back. I'm all about supporting local family owned places. The staff I've dealt with were friendly and knowledgeable... part of the friendly vibe I mention above. The menu has enough variety to keep most people happy (in my opinion, anyway) and the prices are reasonable. The only downside I encountered didn't really have anything to do with the staff or the restaurant itself, but instead some other customers that happened to be there at the time. They had two very large dogs. They had "service dog" vests on and honestly, the dogs were very well behaved. My mom sat facing the dogs and she had fun watching them. I had my back to them and may not have even noticed their presence except for one thing and I'm super sad to even bring this up - I LOVE DOGS! But sorry to say... one or both of these dogs stunk. I was two tables away from them... actually sitting closer to the kitchen window than the dogs... and kept smelling this odd "non food" smell. It took me a little bit to figure it out. I can't really blame the restaurant on this one... it wasn't their fault, and "service dogs" are supposed to be accommodated by law I believe... but IDK, I'd prefer to smell yummy food in a restaurant. On top of that, there was an eyelash on my plate--not a great first impression. My wife and I shared the three-meat combo with brisket, pulled pork, and pork belly. The pulled pork was decent and really the only one that was enjoyable. The brisket was dry with uneven cuts, and the pork belly was so dry it was chewy, almost like gum. BBQ is a tough business -- and the competition isn't getting any easier. Lincoln, CA is a charming little town that deserves a standout BBQ spot, and Hops and Hogs has the potential to be that place. There are definitely some positives: the service was friendly and attentive, the beer selection was solid, and the location and vibe of the place were great. But let's be real -- in BBQ, the food has to carry the weight. I ordered the combo plate with pork belly pastrami and brisket. Unfortunately, the meats were dry and overcooked, which is a dealbreaker for any BBQ fan. It was also a bit concerning to walk in on a Saturday night at 7pm and see only 5 out of 20 tables filled -- especially for a spot that should be bustling during prime dinner hours. I get it -- tossing out food that was prepped earlier in the day / week isn't easy. But if you want return customers and full tables, you have to be willing to make those tough calls. I truly hope Hops and Hogs can dial it in, because the foundation is there. But as it stands, I won't be back. read more

Some of the slowest and inattentive service we have had at a restaurant especially at one where a majority of the food is cooked ahead of time. The wait would have been tolerable if the food wasn't just mid. We were there about an hour and only ate for about 10-15min. of that, and watched the few plates of food for the other 4-6 tables that came into the kitchen window sit for over 5 min. under the warmer with no servers to be seen on the floor. read more

Had a great day fishing with my brother and we decided to get a burger and beer before heading home. I had the Shroom and Swiss medium rare. It was excellent. They cooked it just right and the mushrooms were present, aka, a good portion of thick sliced shrooms. The side of fries and Sierra Nevada topped it off. My brother had the Califorcation Burger also cooked medium rare. The burger was cooked correctly, but they didn't have any avocados which kind of defeats the purpose. They substituted with extra bacon, but the bacon was actually really tough. It was still a solid burger, but the missing parts didn't allow it to be a star. The service was very good, and the bartender actually gave us a complementary beer because the tap was acting up. It was a nice gesture and appreciated. The sauerkraut Nevada's were great.
