Typical old school Italian food in a quiet setting. Lombardos is always the "go to" place for the 70 and up crowd in my family. Mainly because the menu hasn't changed in years and it's a quiet place where they can hear the conversation. The eggplant fries are always a crowd pleaser and the drinks are good! Most people always like their food, but I was very discouraged and disaspointed by the service on our last visit. The service was very very slow. The waitress was a little over the top cocky and loud. I asked for a "dry" salad, absolutely no dressing because of dietary reasons. I got served a salad DRIPPING in oil. My brother and his wife are vegans and after ensuring them that the marina sauce was vegan, she came out halfway through the meal and said "oops, there's cheese in the sauce" Seriously, soooo wrong! That was a line that should not have been crossed, how could you not know what is in your own sauce? And then just say "oops" about it and not offer a discount?? That was enough to not make me happy to go back for sure! read more

Came here based on recommendations from our in-laws. Decor could definitely use an upgrade as it's a somewhat depressing dining room with very outdated furniture and walls. Bad water stains on the ceiling are not very inviting either. All in all a very drab restaurant that could look quite nice with a renovation. The food was better than expected in some cases, but completely fell flat in what is a signature element for any good Italian restaurant. Marinara sauce. The bread gave us some hope as it was a very good crusty Italian bread. We had some olive oil on the table so I drizzled some of that on there instead of the butter and it was quite good. Next we all had the Italian salad with the red wine vinegar dressing. Better than expected though I've never been to an Italian household (my family is Italian) or restaurant that puts pepperoni slices in the salad. Nothing wrong with it, but different. Then came my Italian Wedding Soup, only it wasn't. It was chicken soup with either rice or ditalini pasta. Italian Wedding Soup starts with chicken stock, but includes small meatballs and Acini di pepe for the pasta (tiny pasta balls like peppercorn.) It was a decent chicken soup with many chunks of chicken, but it wasn't Italian Wedding Soup. To test a new Italian restaurant I always order something with Marinara. This time I went with the gnocchi with fresh marinara. The waitress assured us the gnocchi was made fresh on the premises and they appear to be quite fresh and made from rolls of potato pasta dough. The sauce, however, was a really good tomato soup. It would be great in a bowl with a grilled cheese sandwich to go along with it. It wasn't a marinara sauce in the least. I ate a little of it and then took the rest home. I ended up re-cooking it that evening with some garlic and fresh basil to make it much better. My in-laws both had spaghetti with meatballs. They kept saying the sauce didn't taste as good as it used to. My wife got spaghetti with pesto sauce and this one was pretty good. A nice fresh pesto that would have been great with a little more garlic and a touch more pine nuts. All in all, drab appearance and un-even food. First time to this restaurant. It was outstanding! The filet mignon was so tender and cooked to perfection. My husband had the lamb ragu. He raves about it. Great service and very friendly staff from hostess to waitstaff to chefs. I would give this restaurant a zero if I could. I recently moved back to Lancaster and I was really looking forward to eating at Lombardo's after a long hiatus. The food used to be excellent. However, this place should be on Kitchen Nightmares and Gordon Ramsey needs to be called in. The ceiling has many water stains on it and it looks like mold may be growing on it. The food was also terrible. We ordered the mozzarella sticks as an appetizer and they came out overcooked, though I ate them because the marinara sauce helped to mask the slightly burnt taste. I ordered the house Italian dressing for my salad and it came out drenched in red wine vinegar. The final straw was our entrees - the chicken parmesan and baked canneloni. The breaded chicken was burnt and the spaghetti had absolutely no flavor to it. The baked canneloni was dried out and burnt on the edges, had insufficient filling, and runny tasteless sauce. We asked for the check and left. The wait staff asked if we wanted a box for the food and we obviously said no. I'm shocked that we weren't asked about the food. I can't imagine serving food like that to my family at home, let alone in a restaurant. If they keep this up, I can't imagine why anyone would come back. So, after reading all these horrible reviews one by an elite yelper, I have to say I was intrigued. So, on my weekly foray into the magical land known as Lancaster, off I went. I went as a walk in for lunch last week & had the truffle fries - hand-cut, steaming hot & loaded with flavor. I also got the chilled seafood that was perfection itself & I have not found this offered at all in this region, so it was a particular delight. I moved onto a pasta for my main & after the reviews on pasta, I was a little nervous to be honest. I had the wild mushroom gemelli & I could not give higher praise for this dish. Coming from Brooklyn & growing up on traditional Italian food, it doesn't get any better. I cannot wait to come back & dive into this menu. I also finished with the rum cake that was incredible. This place needs to get their act together. Very unorganized. My dad passed and we set up for a repass at Lombardo's. We sent the obituary out and publish online. Faint Frank Sinatra songs in the background and clean, dark red carpets and gold panels provide the perfect setting to this classic and homey, authentic fine Italian fine-dining experience. I feel the need to give a 3-course review for our amazing 3-course meal. INTRODUCTION Walked in here with my family on a busy Saturday night during F&M homecoming without reservations, and was greeted amicably by the owner, Mike, who said we'll have a table ready in 5 minutes, despite how busy they were. Sure enough, he personally sat us down and welcomed my everyone in my 6-person family with a brief and intriguing history of how his family brought the family recipes of hand-rolled pastas and sugar-free homemade sauces of Southern Italy into Lancaster, PA. Needless to say, Mike made our family really feel comfortably at home and we immediately knew we had found a GEM. FOOD Good food all starts where? Il pane, certamente! Mike immediately brought us amazingly warm, lightly crispy and chewy bread which he implored us to dip in Lombardo's famous, home-made garlic vinaigrette dressing. We were all taken aback by the flavor of the dressing with which we happily sprinkled over our fresh salads as well. Per Mike's suggestion, we started off with the Fritto Mozze. Without any exaggeration, these were the best mozzarella sticks I've ever had. My siblings and I were amicably fighting over the last ones! I don't think I will every go back to the frozen food aisle again. Fresh, melted mozzarella covered in perfectly buttery and flaky breadcrumbs. Main courses at my table varied from the HUGE and tender Veal Chop to the hand-rolled meat and cheese cannelloni and veal parmigiana. Portions were so large everyone left with a doggy bag. Did I mention each dish comes with a very GENEROUS side of the incredible ravioli!? These were main courses in themselves not just size, but attention to detail and taste as well. SERVICE If you couldn't already tell, it was simply exceptional. Our waitress Kate was an expert of the menu and in timing/attention to all of our needs. We felt like we were the only ones dining at the place which we were by the end of the night (we wined and dined for over 2 hours!) We were recently in Lancaster looking for authentic Italian food. We made the mistake of first going to the " trendy" Luce claiming to be Italian...was not. We left without eating and headed to Lombardo's...service was excellent. We had fresh bruschetta, froccasia bread, with freshly made pasta...angel hair, and spaghetti. We both had meatballs with sauce...we loved it. We truly appreciated the Frank Sinatra music, and great evening, once we left the fake Italian Restraint, Luce. I grew up eating regularly at old-school red sauce Italian places like this one in RI. Seemed like a safe choice for the family. It was awful. Antipasto was horrific -- most of the stuff was straight out of a can, and it came with celery stalks with the leaves still attached! Yuck. I must admit that my girlfriend and I did a yelp search of restaurants in the area (Lancaster, PA) prior to us selecting Lombardo's. I was in the mood for Italian, and didn't want to overspend for quality food. We selected Lombardo's from a few different Italian options in the area. To put it short, we were very happy with our selection. When we first entered, we noticed the majority of the crowd was in fact 60+ as mentioned. But this just meant a quieter relaxed atmosphere for our nice dinner. The host was entertaining customers as we came in and took a second for us to be seated. Not that this was a bad thing, as the host was also the owner and after seating us, quickly explained both the history of and tradition behind the food you will find in his family's restaurant. And although this WAS our first visit, I think we may have gotten the best waitress they had to offer. Her name was Michelle, and her knowledge of the menu, and ability to give you a mental picture of every dish, was quite satisfying. After a moment to review the menu, we ordered. Michelle was kind enough to offer additions to our dishes, like meatballs and if I wanted a mixture of both cheese and meat ravioli. We would have rated 4.5 stars if it was possible, the price was a bit steeper than we had originally thought it would be. I got about 7 large ravioli for about $17, but honestly, this restaurant is worth every penny. Very friendly service and the Long Island Ice Teas were fantastic. Lombardo's Restaurant is quality, authentic Italian food, (not frozen as everything is fresh and hand-made) with great service and atmosphere. This was legitimately a nice experience! My boyfriend and I went there for the first time today, and while we certainly didn't fit the usual age bracket (we're 20 and 22), the food was still unerringly delicious. The salad may have had a little too much vinaigrette but it was delicious vinaigrette, and the cold strawberry soup and tiramisu (like bookends for the meal) were fantastic. The pricing and portion size were both very fair. The only thing that made us mildly uncomfortable was the manager's less than genial attitude towards us, seemingly because of our age. Ever drive by a restaurant and get an immediate sense that you want to go in and try the place? We were in Lancaster last year for Roots and Blues and I got that feeling going by Lombardo's. This year, we made sure to stop in. It didn't start well, but that was completely our fault. My friend Pat and I each thought the other made the reservation (for a busy Saturday night). When we got there, we told them we had a 6:45 and they asked us for the name. Pat said "Mike" and I said "Pat" and they looked at us a bit questioningly and then told us they had no reservation for us at all. But instead of smiling politely and telling us that they don't serve morons, they told us that they had a large wedding rehearsal dinner going on, that things might take a little longer than usual to come out, but that if we wanted to bear with them then they'd be happy to seat us. We took them up on the offer, and are very happy we did. They took someone out of the lounge to serve us and she was very personable - we really enjoyed talking with her. One of the people from the family that owns the place also made a point of dropping by our table and talking about the food. It's southern Italian-slash-American, which means it's very distinctive. Tomato sauce with no sugar in it. Handmade pastas, including the ravioli. Manicotti does not involve tubes of pasta; instead, it's filled crepes (which is how my mom made it). They do it the way it's supposed to be done. We started with cocktails and fried calamari. One of my friends ordered a Negroni, up. When it came out, it was on the rocks, so she asked if they'd fix it and they immediately did. And later, we found that they took it off the tab, which was entirely unnecessary from our standpoint. The calamari was perfectly fried and very tasty. For entrees, we had two orders of the manicotti/canelloni (which they call "man-can"), the braciole special, and gnocchi. All of these were excellent. My braciole (a beef roll about the size of a small baked potato stuffed with cheese, bread crumbs, and I don't know what else) came with a side of spaghetti that was perfectly done. You take a thin slice of braciole on your fork with a little spaghetti and some sauce and life is very good. The gnocchi were delicious little potato bombs, cooked perfectly. The man-can crepes were (I swear) just like my mom's, and the fillings were great. We had a bottle of wine from southern Italy - can't remember the name but it was great with the food and not too high in alcohol, which is as it should be. For dessert, we split the tiramisu. This was a little different from some others; kind of like a puddingy custard on brandy-soaked ladyfingers, and it was wonderful. They don't spare the brandy and that really makes the dish. That and a double espresso and I was very stuffed and very happy in a way that went well beyond just getting my stomach filled - I felt like I'd just had Sunday dinner at my grandma's house. And that "bear with us" part on the service? They did indeed have a rehearsal dinner going on that took up about half the restaurant and we never had to wait too long for any of our food to come out. Everything was hot and both server and owner had time to hang with us and talk a bit. We couldn't have asked for better service. Summary: Great service despite our self-inflicted reservation snafu, great conversation with server and with owner, Negroni taken off the tab when they didn't really need to, fantastic food, wonderful meal overall. This place was recommended in a local magazine we read at the inn we stayed in in Lititz. It was reservation only and was crowded upon arrival. The menu looked versatile. We were seated right away. The piano player was great. The wine selection was good as well. Unfortunately it goes down hill from here. The waiter forgot what we ordered and had to come back and ask us again. He told us 3 times he was bringing bread before bringing it. When it did come, it was very good with peppers, herbed olive oil, and cheese. When our meals came out, we were not offered a pepper grinder or grated Parmesan cheese which seems to be a staple at every other Italian restaurant. The spinach/ricotta ravioli in sage butter sauce was overcooked and had zero flavor. There wasn't any sage or seasoning so I tried adding salt and pepper but it didn't help. I ended up sending it back and asked for more bread. The waiter was not receptive and proceeded to remind me that I ordered a "butter sauce." This I thought was extremely rude since I was nice about this incident. The waiter eventually brought me more bread and herbs. The herbs did NOT have olive oil so I had to ask again for olive oil. He then told us they ran out of olive oil and he thought he would just bring us herbs. Lack of communication and also weird to run out of olive oil at an Italian restaurant. My spouse got the sweet potato gnocchi which was "okay" and told the waiter it was good. The waiter then cleared her plate and stated "yea except you left all the ham, next time you can just ask to get it without ham." Extremely rude considering she stated it was good and he was just clearing her plate. Overall a horrible experience. Left hungry and was expensive for mediocre pasta. Now dad is 91 and in a nursing home with Alzheimer's. Gave this place another shot after seeing the good reviews and that it has new management and staff. My first visit was about as bad as it gets. Not 1 good thing to mention. They definitely made changes for the better. Staff was very friendly and the food was better. We ordered the Mozzarella Fritto and the Fried Calamari and then Spaghetti & Meatballs and Rigatoni and Spicy Sausage. The good, the mozzarella app was executed well and a large serving, the meatballs were also good, very tender, not a lot of flavor but decent. The pasta was just ok, I never would have known it was made there. The sausages were pretty bad, not much flavor and very overcooked. The bad was the sauce and the calamari, calamari was tender but very soggy, the sauce was the worst part and used with everything we got, I could swear it tastes like smoked paprika, if it is that does not belong in tomato sauce, if it's not than something else is weird about it, definitely has a smoker taste, either way it's pretty bad and bad sauce from an Italian Restaurant is a no go for me. Lombardo's used to be a great place to eat Italian food. Unfortunately that no longer is true. Last 2 visits to Lombardo's was very disappointing. The service was slow and almost nonexistent. Our last visit we waited 10 minutes for someone to welcome us. Waited another 10 minutes for our drinks and 1/2 hour later no one came back to take our order. The restaurant was about 1/2 full. We walked out and will not return. It is unfortunate because we frequented this restaurant for over 40 years. I tried to call Lombardos 5 times to place an order for 16 meatballs and a quart of sauce, all I got was an answering machine about making reservations. I drive over and go in and tell the hostess what I want. The very snooty hostess tells me that I needs to call the order in for an order that big. I said I tried numerous times and no answer and she said I can't always get to the phone. So she says I will check with the kitchen to see if they can accommodate your order and she comes back and says no, do I want to place an order for tomorrow. I said no and I left. Now my question is...if there was a party of 6 who ordered spaghetti and meatballs, that is 18 meatballs, so you cannot process that order because you have a LIMIT on the meatballs? Was I not a paying customer??? I have been going to Lombardos since I was a kid, back when the restaurant was where House of Clarendon is located, but I will never set foot in this restaurant and I will let everyone know of my dissatisfaction. Really horrible experience at Lombardo's. Way too pricey for what this place is, which feels like the community dining room at a nursing home. Talk about stepping back into 1983. Jumbo shrimp cocktail was not properly deveined. Both pasta dishes we ordered were gross. We didn't eat them. No flavor at all. Amateur hour cooking. From the recent reviews on here, it seems like this place has gone significantly downhill. The older clientele must be keeping Lombardo's in business. Do not recommend. Went with a group for a get together. I ordered the veal parm and my wife had the special of tenderloin tips and shrimp over linguini. Hers was awful, no flavor in the dijonaise, the tips were awful, chewy with bad flavor. On top of that it was $36!!! My dish was also poor. The sauce on the pasta was watery ant the meat had an off flavor. Have not been there in many years, and the decor sure has not been updated, down to the duct tape on the carpet. Restaurant seems to cater to older generation that likes bland food. Average age of patrons was 50 plus. We had lunch at this somewhat non descriptive restaurant The food was excellent and the wine pairing was perfect Can you imagine, fresh made in house pastas , meatballs that melt in your mouth. We were chatting and we are delighted to know that the entire restaurant will be closing for a complete remodeling in January and reopen in early April We will definitely be back for another enjoyable experience With any luck they will be hosting pasta making classes in the future read more

This was the worst restaurant we have ever visited!!! The service was terrible. It took over an hour to get our food and when our food finally came the chicken tenders were completely raw!!!! Went to Lancaster for a war game convention and wound up here for dinner one evening. Please do not bother going. There were actually 5 of us. Not one of use liked what we got. The food has no taste. They claim to be authentic southern Italian cuisine. I was there in southern Italy for 16 days last year. There is no way that their claim holds. Geez, where to start. Stood around for a long time before we were even acknowledged. Ordered small crab cake appetizer, as soon as they arrived my expectations were lowered, more like large crab hush puppies with a large bowl of spiced up thousand island dressing. My wife ordered the tomato mozzarella salad, which she thought might have been OK but the tomatoes were plastic like. Being a vegetarian, she ordered spaghetti with marinara sauce. The sauce was literally just unseasoned tomato sauce. Still was probably better than mine, I ordered spaghetti with white clam sauce, took 2 bites, and couldn't wait to get out of there. This treasure is what it is.....Italian and good food. Is it South Philly or NY? No but good for this German county. Staff is excellent and would not hesitate to go back. Reminds me of a restaurant that existed 30 years ago. That's a good thing. read more
