Batson River is the latter, and we loved our lunch outing in one of the adorable seasonal outdoor ice fishing sheds. We chose a few "handhelds," including the blackened haddock tacos and fried haddock sandwich, both of which are served with a red cabbage slaw. I enjoyed the tacos - the ratio of fish to slaw and aioli, etc. was just right. And the sandwiches are served with a generous amount of crispy French fries. On a weekday in March, many of the local shops and restaurants were closed. It was an unseasonably warm day, and we were happy to stumble upon Batson River for a fun and memorable lunch!

We had lunch here on Sunday, just after seeing Santa on the boat from the bridge down the street. Highly suggest putting your name in before you want to eat (it was about an hour wait when I put our name in at 11:45). Their reservation system sends you a text when they put your name on the list, and from the link they send you, you can also check your position on the list. They text you when your table is ready. When we arrived with our dog to check in, we were given a couple of seating options in the outside heated deck area. We chose seats looking outside, which were topped with fur warmers, which made them comfortable to sit on. There are plenty of heaters on, which made it nice and cozy. Also, the plethora of Christmas decorations inside and out, made it also feel cozy, and festive. For lunch, I had the blackened fish tacos, which comes with mango pico, red cabbage slaw, chipotle aioli, cotija, on corn tortillas. They were super flavorful, and delicious. I stuck with fries, and they even had sour cream for dipping them. We will absolutely be back to try more of the menu!

Several more visits since my last review…read more Some things haven't changed: -- The beers are still great. Swish, Here's to Feeling Good All the Time, Nothing Gold, and Reciprocal are a formidable foursome. At any given time, you can usually get at least two, more often three, sometimes all four. -- You'd be hard pressed (pun intended) to find a better smashburger in Portland, but I'd also put it up against any regularly-offered burger I've had in Portland--smashed or otherwise. I love everything about it, from the high caliber of the beef to the fresh pillowy milk bun to the exhilaratingly strong cure of the bacon to the razor-thin cutting of the vegetables to the execution that gets even a smashburger burger juicy. -- I'm still not crazy about the wings. They have a frozen dinner feel to them. A few things, though, have changed: -- Full service now instead of having to order everything at the bar. That's a plus. -- The place is much more crowded-- including screaming tykes-- on the weekends. Not a plus, but can't fault a place for its own popularity. -- The fries are now the industrial strength coated kind. A big minus and a sad drop off from prior greatness, but better that than from an item off the main cast. -- You can now order beer cans to go from the table rather than having to get in line. A nice convenience. A few things to know: -- It's a surprisingly good option for vegetarians and pescatarians. The veggie burger and the grilled fish sandwich are both much more than solid. -- There's outdoor seating in front of the building and also to the right. -- The bar room to the right of the entrance is adults only, so if those screaming tykes get on your nerves, this is the place to be. -- You can still order beer at the bar if that's your preference over table service. Still a favorite, and the combo of beer, food, and space is tough to beat (Mast Landing and Maine Beer in Freeport are also somewhere in that echelon).

As an IPA fan I enjoyed this new version very much for its hop saturated citrusy forward taste that drank quite smooth for the 9.5%. At this point now Bissell is broken into two separate parts. The first will be the space welcoming to families and is more of their restaurant style area. Appeared to be a popular area and does offer reservations. My preferred area is the Bissell Garden as they call it. Those entering need to be of drinking age and have more lounge vibes where you order at the bar. It still offers full kitchen menu so is perfect. Particularly my favorite is snagging bar stools to grab some beers and food. I had to try out the Super Swish while my wife grabbed their red ale named Turnpike. Then food wise we split their kitchen special Classic Poutine. Some of the best classic kept simple poutine I have had. The perfect comfort food for yet another cold weather day in Maine. Have been impressed by all the food from Bissell. Truly the only negative still stands being the fact it's on Thompson's Point and required paid parking (not Bissell Brothers call but still). One of the most popular Maine breweries for a reason especially in the IPA game. Give all their other style of beers a try too though, top notch brewery!

I should have just checked on Yelp since one of my Yelp friends gave this five stars! I have to concur because I stopped her with my co-worker and my husband for a couple of beers and have to say two things: 1) they have a great beer list that rotates frequently, 2) the bartenders are top notch. You know sometimes you go to a cool beer place and it seems like the bartenders want to do ANYTHING but actually give you a beer in exchange for cash? This place is the opposite and it's wonderful. Very helpful with the beer list, suggestions, tastes, etc. They are also quick to offer another beer where as some places it seems like pulling teeth to try to get a beverage. It was lively but not slammed when I was there but I can tell these guys would manage great even if the bar was two or three deep with customers. Yeah, I thing the Mash Tun is one of the best beer bars I've been to and in a place like Portland that is in the top echelon of beer cities, that is an achievement to respect.

Beer purists may find the brews to be average, but I'm more than happy with the variety of beers offered and satisfied with the ones I tried, especially the Peanut Butter Milk Stout, There is also hard seltzer ("hard water") that can be flavored with any of the Italian soda flavors, a hard tea, and hosted cider, all gluten free, as well as mixed drinks. No question there is something for everyone. So happy to have more food items to choose from to go with the beers. A nice assortment of options at a reasonable price point. I had a Rueben panini with kettle chips, which was satisfying. My friend has the Birchwood Signature Soft Pretzel that is made with spent grain from the beer production and served with warm beer cheese, which also was decent. A standout was the server - Ella Q - she was super helpful at explaining the menu, flights, and was so pleasant! Knew just when to check in, and when to give us space. Bottom line - a solid local option for food & beer with great service on this particular evening, and live music on some nights. Grab your friends, have a flight or a pint, some food, and be happy that this option is available in Gray.

Our bartender was knowledgeable, friendly, and chatty. That cruising the menu we settled on adult beverages,. Their IPA for me and my wife ordered their raspberry sour. I had a lot of hope for their IPA but unfortunately it was fairly pedestrian. That said, my lobster roll made up for it all! I decided on going for the max size. Though a little pricey, if you're hungry it's the way to go. With that I enjoyed a decent side Caesar salad. My wife ordered their French dip with tater tots. The sandwich smelled and tasted delicious. Unfortunately the tots could've used a few more minutes in the fryer. All said it was a good meal. Will be back? We'll see.

The soup came out hot with plenty of potatoes. There's is GF which is a plus for me. Disappointed because it didn't seem creamy enough, like there was no dairy at all. Plus, they put thyme in it. If you know about clam chowder, NE style does not have thyme in it, but Manhattan style does (the red one). South Portland's is better. Sorry! The Greek w/ chicken was excellent. Plenty of chicken, olives, etc. Just enough dressing. A large portion. Sea Dogs overall is ALWAYS a great option. Great staff, good food, lots of choices and fresh. The place is always clean. I typically eat at the bar since I'm by myself.
