My son had a free day from school this Friday and wanted to go climbing. I called to see if they catered to kids and they said absolutely. Upon arriving I was impressed with the gym. It was so modern and clean. We purchased a day pass and it was well worth it. It's an all bouldering gym which is perfect for my son since that's all he really wants to do. Long Beach Rising - Rock Climbing Near Me - Long Beach, California

Ok, so this review is rating the gym not just on how it was when I was there (I was at one of the early open houses in December '18) because it wasn't 100% completed, but based on a combination of the execution on things that were there, and the promise of things to come (e.g., when I was there the sauna was not yet set up, but that's a huge part of the appeal if you're a sauna person like me). The main things that made the gym especially inviting were the way the building looks and is built, the types of holds they have, and the location in Long Beach. The bouldering floor is excavated out of the ground--it's really a pit--and that is great because the building is a historic building, pretty low slung, and going down gives them space and lets them make longer and better climbs. The second element are the holds--most gyms have the same holds. That means that however creative the route setters are, there's only so much they can do to switch it up. You've got a lot of jugs, a few little crimpy pinchers, and then your basic slopers. Maybe a baby head if they wanna get weird. At LBR, they've got a TON of just plain intereting holds. Just with the few climbs they'd set up for the open house I was doing some movements I'd never done before. I can't wait to see what they come up with when all of them are in and they've gotten to know them. The final thing is a just a side note--Long Beach is cool. There's a lot of very dank food nearby. I ended up eating some very nice Cambodian noodles a few blocks away but there are plenty of options. Now, this stuff wasn't all there when I climbed there, but they said that in addition to the sauna there will be a cafe, little shop, weight area, all the stuff you can expect from a fancy climbing gym. The interior is unlike any space for gyms and creates an awesome vibe around training, particularly the Moonboard. The setting and angles ares awesome. Problems that make you think and work you. I came here on Monday and I must say climbing here is gorgeous and also quite challenging! It is possible because I don't climb often that I had a hard time or just that the routes are graded differently from other gyms. Otherwise I highly recommend trying this place out. I believe they are still having their soft opening so take advantage of the deal while you can. Either way- if I lived closer I would be going here every day. read more

Long time member who would prefer to remain anonymous. Climbing at LBR has become very one noted. Burley, dynamic comp climbing. Low grade climbs feature blocked holds and small feet. Slab climbs feature dynamic movement. Movement that doesn't translate well to outdoor climbing (which is most often why we train, right?). New sets contain a majority of high level climbs which is nice to project but not nice to train on. If you know anything about training, you shouldn't be at your limit every session. Grading is inconsistent, two climbs of the same grade from different sets can be wildly different difficulties. Large holds are used to take up space on the wall and make it look full when in reality the usable area is very small and climb density is also low. Focus seems to be on Instagramable climbs and merch, less on what core members actually want (suggestion box is no longer being filled with paper and pens to receive feedback). Member events have ceased while new member incentives are touted to bring in new members so it appears no care is being given to existing members. Yoga is decent. read more

The gym is nice and well put together, also clean. Is a bit on the smaller size, but the climbs are pretty fun. Membership is $84 a month to use everything in the gym, and the basic membership is $40 a month. Which is fine if you live somewhere in a higher income area in the O.C or west LA. But we're in Long Beach, and the neighborhood isn't dropping that much on a gym membership. This business is part of the adversity of gentrification. Don't contribute to the problem unless they're willing to change. If they really want to be part of the community, and welcome everyone. Make it more affordable for people who live here. read more

Finally got a chance to visit and I am SO excited they're open and in full swing. The place itself is really beautiful and unique. I've been to dozens of gyms and this one stands out because of the building and architecture. The yoga rooms are beautiful and filled with natural light. The gym area is well stocked with cardio machine options (treads/assault bikes), weights, kettlebells, and other training equipment. I love the wooden climbing walls and bathrooms which are both just beautiful. Gorgeous and upscale design. The climbs are interestingly set and tough but fun. The owner and manager are both so chill and sweet. Look forward to more climbing sessions here. read more

I mean...its perfect. The gym itself is awesome. State of the art holds from all the top companies, sick climbs and good vibes in general. The space is amazing too. Plus theres a great little cafe/workspace in the front. and If you dont want to climb, you can just hit the weights or other traditional gym equipment. Showers are really nice and there's a suana! Although I don't climb much, the gym is always super clean and well organized. I mainly use their weight lifting space, which has some of the best equipment. The staff is awesome, too. Definitely one of the best gyms around. Cheers. read more

So excited that this gym finally opened!!! The walls have fresh climbs, the weight room is set up, and the Moon and Tension Boards are fully operational. They also have the most gorgeous bathrooms/locker rooms and saunas. While some features are still pending (cafe and gear shop), this beautiful gym is SO nice already. Great setting, a unique selection of holds, and amazing aesthetic facilities-- all the things you expect of a high end climbing gym and training facility. I had a chance to visit the gym before they were open and was given a special tour by the owner, Greyston. I've climbed at dozens of indoor gyms and it's amazing to see when someone is so passionate about their sport and they sink everything into it. I stopped in and bought a day pass while visiting my sister and was so impressed! It's a beautiful building and space with plenty of room for growth. The locker rooms are clean and large with beautiful decor. Every toiletry you might need is available in a small basket for customer use. There is also a sauna. The yoga rooms are gorgeous as is the bouldering area. Lots of fun routes of varying abilities, and it's much larger than most bouldering gyms I've been to in California. If you don't want to use the locker rooms, there are cubbies in the bouldering area. There's also a small gym area, moon and hangboards, everything a climber might want. They're supposed to be opening a cafe/coffee shop/juice bar (not sure which one) by January 2020. I also like that twice a week their hours start at 6 am. Coming from Portland, my climbing gym opens early, and I tend to be an early climber, so I appreciate this option at LBR. They are more expensive but way nicer than Hangar 18. If I lived in LB, LBR would be my gym. read more

I am such a huge fan of this climbing gym. The wall angles are so fun and the setting is challenging and creative. The facility is gorgeous and modern. It has spacious locker rooms, showers (with towel service), saunas, two yoga rooms, a weight lifting area, snacks and drinks for sale, and state of the art training boards.
