Not so special. Back home we have Thai all the time. This place wasn't as good as those. Maybe Long Grain is resting on its laurels. The coconut soup was fine but lacked punch. The mushrooms in it were too chewy and too large. The Vietnamese salad was tasty and refreshing. The Ginger Chicken was well seasoned but again the mushrooms were too chewy. The real failure was the Pad Ke Mao. It was pure heat. I couldn't taste any seasoning other than the hot peppers. I love hot stuff but I like hot stuff with flavor, not just heat. Oh did I mention that like the other dishes the mushrooms were very very chewy. As for the decor, the wallpaper was pealing and a small piece of the soup bowl was chipped off. read more

The food was amazing, this would be 5 stars if we didn't hand service issues. The soft shell crab with shaved asparagus with fiddleheads was so good and the sauce it came in was perfect. A little spicy and a little sweet. My husband had the pad Thai with pork belly and it was also delicious. I had the Saturday night market soup which was spicy and warming and the slightest sweet edge. The portions were generous and we couldn't finish all our dinners. The only downside was the service left something to be desired. The restaurant itself is smaller (I think about 8 tables total) and not once were our water glasses refilled (we crushed the water because of the perfectly spicy food), we were never asked if we wanted wine or beer (they don't serve hard alcohol) and the we sat for over 20 minutes completely finished with our meal before my husband managed to flag down our waitress. Other tables didn't seem to have the same issue with service. Would I go there again? Absolutely. The food was phenomenal but the service attention otherwise was lacking. read more

One of the best Thai restaurants in the country! Very nice servers, delicious/fresh food and fun atmosphere. We had scrumptious pork dumplings, shisito peppers with a yummy aioli and tasty garlic chive rice cakes. They have a great selections of wine to pair as you please. We ordered take out on a Friday night and the take out wait time was 1 hr to an 1hr and 15 (not even sit in, just take out!). We weren't immediately hungry and didn't live too far so we took the bullet and ordered anyways. The chicken pad Thai was delicious. I studied abroad in Thailand so I've had my fair share of authentic pad thai, and this pretty much hit it. It was a punch of flavor without the sauce being too much, overbearing, or even greasy. They also were generous with the peanuts and bean sprouts. We also got the steamed pork dumplings. I personally would skip out on that because you only got like 5 for a pretty steep price, and they weren't anything special - I've had better being spoiled with Boston's Chinatown. This place is something! No sign in front it doesn't say it's Thai cuisine until you see the menu. But once you taste their dish BAM it just puts you in a happy place. We had rice noodle park belly and kimchi pork ramen both were excellent they do something with curry so mild but flavorful that can put real Thai restaurant a run for their money. Delicious food and cute modern farmhouse atmosphere. This was the best meal we've had in Maine! So much flavor and amazing fresh ingredients. The Pad Memao is an amazing blend of chewy wide wok stir fried noodles with lots of lemongrass and ginger flavor along with chicken, local farmer greens, and mushrooms. Very good! We went for dinner upon arriving in Camden area and had a very good meal here. Dumplings were delicious, the salad was beautiful, and both of the rice bowls we had were excellent. The prices were very reasonable and food was promptly served. My only issues would be the service was a bit spotty (one of our items was incorrectly ordered, server was super busy etc) and the bathroom experience was scary (upstairs, surrounded by storage shelf's and smelly carpet, dark etc.) But, again, food was quite good. So good, we went back for lunch the following day and had an equally good meal. The place is small, so be sure to call early for a reservation. There's a fairly short wine list, but great beer selection and the wines they do have seem to cover the range pretty effectively. read more

Interesting how the owner of Long Grain thinks she can survive by giving customers a time limit for their dining experience. We took a 4:30 reservation because several shop owners raved about how wonderful the food was at Long Grain. She proceeded to tell us we had to vacate the table by 5:30 because she had another reservation coming in. Our party of 5 decided that it was not worth staying, the restaurant it self was bland with a very cold atmosphere, not inviting at all. Having spent considerable time in Thailand, we were thrilled to discover this place with its heavily Thai-inclined menu on our trip to Camden. PROS: Crab fried rice was great! Although it would take a genius to ruin a fried rice dish, the crab was very fresh and well integrated into the dish. CONS: Other items on the menu we sampled. The names and descriptions of the items were very appetizing, but the final form was lacking in both taste and presentation. Words of advice to the establishment: please tone down the oil in curry and add more dish-appropriate spices (e.g., omit the bay leaf, add more galangal). And PLEASE change those chopsticks to fork and spoon, if you are focusing on Thai cuisine which does not use chopsticks. If Asian fusion is your aim, please provide all the utensils necessary for every dish, and not just chopsticks. read more

I feel like a bit of a broken record here but I, like everyone else, was a bit skeptical after reading the reviews of Long Grain. A word to the wise -- believe the hype. After eating a whole lot of Thai food in just about every major east coast city, I can comfortably say that this was by far and away the best Thai food I have ever come accross. Absolutely nothing is one note -- the flavors are delicate, balanced, and flat out delicious. The homemade noodles in the pad kee mao might have ruined future noodle dishes for the rest of my life. Artfully coated in a chili-based sauce, they almost pop in your mouth when you bite into them. Add in the local greens and you have a perfect dish. The Kao Soi soup was one of the most addicting broths I've ever tasted and easily rivals or surpasses any ramen or pho spot on the east coast. Finally, the panang curry with beef was the absolute star of the show. I get panang curry at every Thai place I eat at and this was head and shoulders above the rest. The depth of flavor that they manage to get into that curry sauce was ridiculous. Throw on beef so tender you can cut it with a fork and I was in food heaven. In short, believe everything you read about Long Grain. Make a reservation, expect to wait an extra 15-30 minutes for your table, and then order just about everything on the menu (and definitely the panang). This is truly a special restaurant and a destination for anyone within one hour of Camden. read more

One time I ate something similar in Vietnam, and it was so good I stayed in the same city for three days just to keep eating it. And this was almost that good. We also had this crazy awesome warm black rice pudding! We ate every single last bit of food. We probably licked dishes. We continued to talk about it for the next five hours. I am still talking it about it now, months later. We tried to make a reservation the day-of, and the only opening they had was at 5:00. But it was worth eating at a weird time. They are really slow and on several occasions I have walked in (rather early too) and the woman seating people was annoyed and curt with our request to be seated...for 2 people! I love Thai food, I've been to Thailand, this place can stand with the best places I've ever been. It's not just Thai-- there are also Vietnamese and other dishes on the menu. I got the night market noodle soup, and my GF got the crab fried rice. Both were super flavorful. We also split the Vietnamese salad, which was v tasty. Don't sleep on the beer and wine either. In fact, The New York Times recently named Long Grain as one of the best Asian/Thai restaurants in the country! An honor thoroughly deserved. Price is very affordable given the quality of the food. Love the broad rice noodles, rice cakes (Nothing at all like the Quaker variety! These are soft and chewy.), and fried dumplings. But the dish not to be missed is the Thai custard dish with coconut sauce for dessert. Truly memorable! The place is small and it can be hard to get a reservation. I've been unable to get anyone to answer the phone at long grain restaurant for approx 2 years. I thought it would get better during covid-19 time but got a busy signal. So I stopped in last Saturday. I went past the cooler barricade in the lobby with 2 other customers, to talk with the 2 ladies working the 2 phones. One told us we had to leave, call one of the 2 numbers, and that they were so backed up it would take 1 hour and 15 minutes minimum. I gave up and went to "rice and noodle" in searsport. Get a reservation. Period. Then, be happy you did. It is worth it! This is the best Asian food I have had. Absolutely delicious! The flavors were delicate, varied, and complex. The Pad Kee Mao was perfect. I honestly could not imagine changing one thing about the dish... forget it, about the whole meal. Everything from the appetizer (roasted garlic rice cakes, a spongy extravagant pleasure with this incredible sauce) to the dessert (a coconut flan with this light fantastic crust on top of rice pudding) was flawless. Even the the fried rice we ordered our three year was incredible. It had a layered, complex flavor and the vegetables and nuts were cooked to perfection. We came with our three year old boy and 10 month old daughter. We were treated wonderfully, which can be an issue for a nicer restaurant. My wife and I will definitely be back for a date night. Dishes were hit or miss but the service was horrible. We visited from Portland for a late lunch on a weekday and were greeted by an extremely snotty server who acted very put out by our presence. After standing around awkwardly and then finally being seated at the bar ten minutes later, we were brought menus and chopsticks. We started with the fresh rolls and rice cakes. I'll admit the rice cakes were absolutely delicious. The rolls were nothing to write home about but perfectly fine. For entrees, we split the multi grain fried rice (bland), noodles and a curry. The noodles were still chewy and undercooked and the sauce was overly salted. Had the noodles and sauce been prepared correctly, this dish would have been quite good. The curry was decent but not any better than something I would make at home. Throughout our lunch, our server neglected to stop by with waters, napkins or to check in on the food. For the life of me, I can't understand why the service was so overtly rude and neglectful. I think this place could be great if they adopted a more personable, humble attitude and tightened up the recipes. As it stands, I wouldn't visit again. read more

This might be the absolute best Thai food my bf and I have ever eaten and definitely the best I have ever had on the East Coast. If you are around Midcoast Maine, this place is an absolute must. We ordered the mussels in broth and octopus special. Both incredibly flavorful, perfectly cooked, large portions of fresh and high quality fish. We ordered some beer, but the beer list was only meh. Didn't matter though, with food so awesome. For our main dishes we ordered the daily curry and the one of the spicy homemade noodle dishes. Both were absolutely spectacular. Prices are super reasonable, which allowed us to try everything we wanted to. The service was quick and friendly and the courses were well-timed. The atmosphere was charming, cozy and romantic. This restaurant is so good, I'm trying to figure out a way to live in the back and step-by-step, eat my way through the current menu. We had a pot of tea, then split an order of steamed pork, shrimp & local seaweed dumplings. Oldest daughter ordered the Multi-grain fried rice (she shared) and I had the Pad Thai with Tofu (I didn't want to share but did), the best Pad Thai I've ever had. We made a reservation . We were told we had the table till a certain time 1.5 hr. We arrived to a very loud crowded restaurant. We were seated on time, given paper menus. In less than five minutes we were asked for our order. We chose foods that that were reviewed as very good. The chicken wings were pink inside and had no flavor (thank goodness for the sauce). Can't rave enough about Long Grain! Every time we are in town we make sure to eat here at least once. We have never ordered anything that we didn't love, so we tend to be pretty full by the time dinner is over. However, even if you are full, you MUST order their one and only dessert, which is just heaven in a dish! It is an out of this world coconut custard on black sticky rice. The perfect balance of sweet, creamy richness while still being light and not the least bit cloying. SO GOOD!!! Service has always been delightful by everyone. We ate here twice during our time in Camden. The owner is extremely nice! Our waitress, not so much. She never told us her name, but she was tall and blonde. Seemed a little vacant. Didn't write down our order and she had to come back because she forgot it on her way to place it. The food: We tried the Pad Thai. It was made up of mostly onions, and lacked a lot of flavor. Crunchy peanuts added nice texture but that's a staple of pad Thai. The best pad Thai in Maine is down the coast at a little place in Ogunquit. Also went for the Yelp favorite of pork dumplings. These were bad. No flavor whatsoever and the texture and color looked like dog food. This isn't the worst place in Camden and I'd definitely say go here if you're looking for something different. We visited Long Grain last fall while visiting family in Maine. I was skeptical about eating there as i haven't had good thai in New England before. This restaurant changed everything. I am now a Thai food fanatic and we make special trips from south west NH to Camden just to eat here. Impressive flavors throughout entire meal, great service and atmosphere. They open at 1130, we called in a reservation for 1200 as we were arriving from a long distance, we go there, it was filling up fast, lines outside were forming. This was Tuesday lunch, cold and raining out. Its that good. The restaurant comes across as a 'hole in the wall' placed in a random building on the streets of Camden Maine, but don't be fooled, this pace will blow your mind. read more

I lived in northern Thailand for several months and I enjoyed a delicious dish while I was there called Khao Soi. I had a difficult time finding this dish at Thai restaurants when I returned becuase it is so specific to northern Thailand. We had a reservation for 4 at 8 pm but we weren't seated until about 10 minutes after our reservation. It seemed like they did not manage the timing of their reservations that wonderfully, but besides that everything about this experience was top notch. Loved the vibe and decor of the place. The waitress was helpful and prompt and all of our dishes were absolutely delicious and RIDICULOUSLY cheap for the quality of the food. I got Pad Seaw which I order at a lot of fast food Thai places. This was so much better. Local kale, jalapenos and other greens with soy sauce, eggs and homemade noodles. The homemade noodles made all the difference. They had a wonderful texture and flavor.
