This was my favorite place to eat at the last 25 years, even though they don't except certain coupons or promotions listed on the website. But this time I see it has really gone down in quality. I ordered the fish & chicken platter, with two sides. No small containers for the sides, no fries and hardly any crunchy batter from the fry. And they put everything in a styrofoam container. The chicken was actually smaller and fish was thinner. And the corn I don't believe was even cooked. It taste like it was spooned right out the can, cold. Now one thing I did enjoy was the Popcorn Shrimp side order. It's not shown, because I ate them all before I arrived home. This is the only location around and, I might not be back no time soon. My girlfriend and I each ordered a platter from them. When the order came out I specifically asked them to make sure there was silverware, napkins, and condiments for both of our meals since they put both in one bag instead of giving us each one. There was no eating in the mall so we had to bring it out to the truck which was half way across and one level down. On getting to the truck lo and behold no silverware. I had to leave my girlfriend in the truck while I went all the way back to get utensils which meant I was going to get cold food. When I got back the girls working thought it was funny and had the audacity to laugh at me. They started joking around about how it was the others fault. I told them it wasn't a laughing matter and that I wanted a manager immediately. They said there was no manager and said no one could help. When I insisted that the store did not magically open itself which meant someone was in charge they immediately got on the phone with a manager and took my name and number and said the manager (Davinia (sp?)) would be in very soon and call me as soon as she got in. Ate my cold food and walked around the mall and after 4 hours of no one calling I went back to speak with them again. The manager right away said I was lying about the incident and that I was being rude to her and her staff and she could show it to me on video if I wanted. I stated I would very much like to see this video which would definitely prove I wasn't lying and that the girls did in fact laugh at me. I told her I am a veteran of the Army and have never lied in my life. She then refused to show me any video and instead turned to the girls and asked them if this was true. This told me two things... firstly that she lied about watching any video and secondly that she had made her mind up long before ever meeting me and had no intention of calling me back. After the girls flat out admitted they laughed at me the manager then stated "you are a grown man and you should be able to handle that". At that point I asked for her manager or a corporate number I could contact and she refused to give me either. She told me I should Google it. As soon as I pulled out my phone she literally ran into the back so I couldn't get a video of the way she was acting and her employee followed her as well into the back refusing to come out while I was there. I was not asking for a full refund only for a small percentage off for having to eat my meal cold and for her to talk with her staff about remembering to put utensils in. Since this was apparently rude to ask of them I am instead doing a charge back on my credit card for the full amount and will be contacting corporate customer service, as well as posting about the experience everywhere I can. I would call out to all of my fellow veterans and anyone with honor and integrity to make sure you do not give this place a single penny as they do not deserve to stay in business acting like this over such a simple request to do the right thing. read more

This is classic bad-for-you-but-doesn't-even-taste-that-good fast food. Located in one of the food courts at the Mall of America, which I think actually has a Bloomington address. I had heard some not-so-bad things about LJS, so I was curious, never ever having tried it in my life. In my distant adolescence, I remember Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips on the east coast, which wasn't nearly this bad. The batter was crisp, but oily, a bit soggy, and not enjoyable. The fish was poor FF quality, the fried shrimps in my platter mostly doughy batter, and the hush puppies were lame. The fries were OK FF quality. Oh, coleslaw not too bad, like KFC's. I respect the franchise owners right to not accept them as I am sure they pay higher rent at MOA, but why distributed coupons if they can be used anywhere!? Aargh me hearties, pull up yer ships and I'll tell you a sad but true tale of a bad choice made, numerous doubloons lost, forgettable rations, and a red haired old salty sea hag who serves as a warning to all ye who foolishly enter Long John Silver's cave at the Mall Of America. Me crew and I, er uh, my family spent Friday at MOA going on rides as we do several times per year. My kids' ages are 2 to 9. We come up to the 3rd floor for lunch and usually get Panda Express or Sabarro's but 2 of the kids wanted fish sticks. Ugh. Fish sticks... Even though it's 2pm, every food option has a hundred people in line. Probably because schools are on Winter break and only crazy parents like us are out at MOA, oh well. As we survey the overpriced food options, every store has a hundred people in line.... except Long John Silver's, matey aargh! Oops, sorry again. The fact there was literally nobody in line should have been our first warning. The second warning would have been the salty old red haired sea hag manager who snarls at parched souls that drop their doubloons into her chum bucket at the gateway of her cave. But my kids wanted fish sticks so off I went to visit the sea hag as I clutched my wallet close to my chest. With a stroke of luck, the sun parted the clouds and a very nice, dark haired ponytailed girl took my order. The food was overpriced but she was attentive, repeated back my order, and gave me my kids' drinks with lids very promptly. As I slid down the cave's entryway to wait for the kids' fish baskets, I remembered I forgot to order a glass of water for my wife. I turned back to the nice girl that helped me but she was already assisting another poor lost soul who thought this was a convenient option for food. Suddenly, like a sea monster emerging from the darkest depths of a stormy sea, the salty sea hag manager appeared at the counter barking "Next customer!" I held my hand up and asked "Could I get a glass of water?" This meager request came after I just paid a bill of $40 for lunch mind you. But the salty sea hag wasn't having it. With a dismissive wave of her right hand she shrieked "Next customer!" I stared at the empty hearted leviathan for a moment, waved my receipt and said "I AM a customer! I just spent $40 on lunch!" Without turning her head the sea hag snarled "You'll get it with your food!" I stared at the old sea hag for a second astonished and said "You've GOT to be kidding me, that's how you talk to customers?" But the crusty old sea hag kept ignoring me and started smooth talking the next poor soul into parting with his doubloons. I stood behind this poor soul realizing we are both doomed but I was going to battle the old sea hag myself even if it took McGuyvering a crude tool from the ketchup and napkin dispensers. At that moment, in a deft move of multi-tasking (imagine that) the nice dark haired ponytailed girl filled a styrofoam cup with ice water while she was taking her customer's order and handed it to me. She must be a prisoner of the crusty sea hag, I thought. I looked around to see if I could rescue her from her watery prison and told her "Thank you, you should be the manager." The barnacle crusted red haired sea hag never looked up from trying to strangle doubloons from the poor soul in front of her. So we finally got our... food? flotsam? I wasn't sure if the orange hard bricks were fish or driftwood but the fries were dead and cold like I imagine the sea hag's fingers are. I tried eating the fish sandwich but it had far too much breading and way too much tartar sauce. Weird combo, like eating a paving brick with mayonnaise that had bits of grass clippings in it. The kids wouldn't touch their fish bricks even when I broke them open by banging them on the table a few times. They ate a few sea hag fingers, I mean fries, and then ate popcorn from the tub we bought earlier. As we got up to leave after our close encounter with the crusty salty sea hag at Long John Silver's cave, I debated saving that nice young girl prisoner but more waiting in long lines for rides was in our immediate future. If you are ever shipwrecked on the 3rd floor of the MOA, beware of the dreaded sea hag peddling her strange sea artifacts and passing them off as food. Wait in the other long lines of hearty sailors who know better and you'll have safe harbor and edible food. We survived to tell the tale, ye be so warned. read more

When I heard long john silvers from my wife I have to admit I couldn't help but think of a fishy mcdonalds. So when she brought me a sample platter I wasn't very optimistic. I tried the shrimp first (two kinds). And was pleasantly surprised, Very tasty then the fish fillets. Which are very generously proportioned. All served with a mountain of fries. Finally I tried the hush puppies which normally I would have just fed to ... Well a dog, (I admit I have food predjudices) since everything else had taste so good I gave them a shot. And was glad I did. I'm not sure why I thought so poorly of this restaurant (prejudiced shagrin) before but I would definitely go back. Awesome food great portions and a decent price! Add to that the condiments hot sauce and vinegar! A great change of pace for a burger dominated pallet without busting a fast food budget. In a world of insanely over priced froofy bistros that are long on pretentiousness and short on actual taste and value it's relieving to see that there's at least one LJS in Minnesota. I don't know what it is but for some reason I've never found better tasting fried fish, and that's saying a lot because I grew up on the coast with all the freshest seafood literally straight out of the ocean I could eat, and I still chose LJS fried fish over all of them, something about the balanced flavoring of the batter is just really tasty. WOW I have always wanted to try Long John Silver's food but have yet been brave enough because fast food fish kind of scares me. I will try Long John Silver's one day because I do hear the food is good, but I will not try it from this location. The staff all seem nice, but when I asked for a manager to ask her (she was supposedly the owner?) a question, she was very rude! I wanted to know if they had any mall trades (I work at another, more expensive, restaurant a the mall) and asked if she would trade meals with us and we provide her staff with meals. She immediately got defensive and said NO she does not do that sort of thing, that people drive for hours and hours to just eat at HER Long John Silver's. I didn't even remind her that my restaurant is a nice chain that has multiple sites across the US and our meal costs about 3x how much her meals cost. She just kept belittling me in a loud tone of voice for even asking her if she was willing to make a trade. I was not impressed that instead of simply politely refusing, she long-windily insulted me and down-talked me for asking her for a trade. I will not give this location my business. read more
