To be honest I don't like BBQ very much so I can't give a proper review of the food (what I ate was good but I don't know how it compares to other places). My family all enjoyed their meals. When you go in, you wait in line to order (in our case, a very long line). This line was SLOW and I was getting increasingly anxious that we wouldn't be eating for hours. However, by the time we finally got to the front of the line (20 minutes or so) things became lighting fast! We had barely sat down and they brought our hot food right to us. We were very impressed! The best part of this place is a soft serve ice cream dispenser -- each customer can help themselves to one mini ice cream cone after dinner for free. It was so much fun, and made it such a special experience. I really think this should become standard at every restaurant - salt and pepper on the table, mini ice cream cone after dinner. read more

Brisket is the basic fundamental of a smoke joint, and this one fell flat... meat was not juicy and lacked the smokiness I was expecting, additionally it was a bit tough. Came across this place while visiting Zion. When we walked in, it wasn't that busy yet. But it got busier as we were eating. We ordered a rack of ribs and family platter that came with corn bread and sides. There were a few options for sides - potato salad, fried pickle, hush puppies, etc. To our surprise, the bbq were delicious. I felt like the ribs could be a bit more tender. You know what? I'm going to go ahead and give Lonny Boy's 5 stars. I was quite impressed with the food, the service and the vibe. Let's start with the food. My sandwich was a brisket/pulled pork sandwich. I think they had a name for it but I can't remember. Meats were good, bun was fresh and they had multiple bbq sauces to chose from. I got the fried cauliflower as my side. It was amazing. As a side note, I lived in the Czech Republic and fried cauliflower is a common food there. I have never seen it in the USA, so I was anxious to try it. It was great. Not too greasy and went well with the sandwich. Service was quick and friendly. The soda machine spit out a good diet Dr Pepper. They also have a self served soft serve (nice tongue twister) ice cream machine to finish up your meal with mini cones! Lonny or Sonny or whatever his name is, needs to travel to Texas and learn about barbecue. I had the brisket sandwich, which was drier than most beef jerky. The indoor ambience looked nice enough but it was so cold that all the workers were wearing hoodie sweatshirts. None of the usual bbq condiments were offered. Where are the pickles. The service was excellent, and they were willing to accommodate our dog (in a completely contained carrier) so that she was safe from the heat. I really wish the food was better. We walked in and were the only ones in the place....should have taken the hint. Servers were kids not interested in helping us. The cold beer sign caught our eye so we stopped. After trying to understand how to order beer and food from these kids we settled on wings and beers. The beer was warm and the wings were from a few days ago, at least. I took the warm beer back trying to come to some kind of happy medium, and was asked "what would you like us to do about it"? Kept my cool and asked for a draft, no refund needed. The draft was even warmer. I complained and they said they couldn't take it back after we turned down the first beers, evidently we used up our return policy. I asked for a box for our wings (why I'm not sure, they weren't eatable)and she pointed to the stack of styrofoam boxes. Guess it was a self serve kinda thing.. This had to have been the WORST BBQ and WORST SERVICE i have ever experienced in my life. The chicken actually tasted like it was doused in salt for the past week and not only was it the driest piece of chicken i ever had, but it was undercooked and burnt at the same time. It's not the best barbecue in the country, but if you just finished hiking in Zion and craving some homey food that isn't fast food, then this is definitely an option. The meats are on the leaner side, which can be a good or bad thing depending on the person. As an example, the brisket was very lean, no fat at all. While I liked it, my boyfriend did not. They didn't ask if we wanted lean or fat, so I'm not sure if there's an option. The pork was also on the leaner side too, but nothing slathering it with bbq sauce couldn't fix. Visiting Utah with a group of friends we decided to stop here based on reviews. Location was spacious and clean. Customer service was friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. It was nice they have large tables for groups. We all ordered different items from the menu. I am not sure who has been providing awards in the area but I would say this was not good bbq. The brisket was okay, but the burned ends were very rubbery. The sides were eatable but not tasty. The corn bread was very dried. The soft serve ice cream machine was even out of ice cream we only got to try one tiny bit. The one thing that was good was the loaded fries which I asked for all the sauces on the side (thankfully) all the sauces would have been too much. This is probably the worst bbq I've ever had. I lived in Kansas for 3 years before moving back here and they did bbq right. This place... made us lose our appetite. And it is waaaay overpriced, and they were out of a lot of stuff. Came here and got a 2 meat combo (brisket and ribs) and chose fries and beans as my sides. The ribs were very tender and outstanding, the brisket i thought was a little dry. The beans were very good and had a very pronounced BBQ flavor. I also really liked the fries, very light and soft but with a thin crispy batter, one of the best fries i can remember in a long time! Staff was helpful and friendly, you order at the counter and they give you a number and bring it to you when its ready. There are utensils, sauces and soda on the side that you get yourself. The regular BBQ sauce is available on a pump at the utensil station but they have more sauces behind the counter if you ask. I like the regular BBQ sauce but i like the spicy one even better just ask them for it, it was just the right amount of heat but didn't overpower everything. I think everyone enjoyed themselves and the food here. If i was in the area again i'd make an effort to come back here. read more

They say Zion NP is a life changing experience....well so is Lonny Boys. We had the pulled pork sandwich, brisket, corn bread, sausage, fries and Mac and cheese and shared it all. I regret nothing. All of it was slap your mama fantastic and the next time I'm in the area you better believe I'm coming back. The cornbread was fresh out of the oven, the brisket fell apart, the pulled pork was perfectly prepared, the honey butter was out of this world. We tried a lot of their bbq sauces but our favorites were the original and the mustard bbq. The customer service was more like coming home than going to a restaurant. The only item on the menu we didn't get that I wish we did was the fry-chos with brisket. Someone out there in the Yelp-verse please get these and let me know what I missed out on. When walking in, no one greets you. It's not a wait-to-be-seated type of restaurant. You have to go to the counter & order, then they'll bring out your order to whichever table you decide to sit at. We stood in the front for a bit before realizing that lol You also have to grab your own utensils as well. The ribs are a must-have when coming here! It's really delicious!! Literally fall off the bone! The sandwiches were alright. The meats inside the sandwiches & chicken tenders were very bland. Which is probably why they have a sauce station to add some flavor! I would never recommend Lonny Boy's for ribs, ever! I had a 1/2 rack for lunch last Saturday. It came out amazingly fast. Peculiarly, it was it was only slightly warm, not hot as I would have expected. I never suspected how big a mistake I was making by eating those ribs. Fast forward 3 hours. I became as sick from food poisoning as I've ever been in my life. I left a feedback with my personal information when they sent the receipt via email hoping someone would reach out to me with an apology, and perhaps offer to refund my money. It is now 3 days later. Came here for dinner on a Saturday. Ordered food at the counter and they brought it to us. We got the sampler for 2 for $33. It came with ribs, brisket, chicken and pulled pork plus 2 sides and cornbread. We got the fried cauliflower and fried pickles. Both sides were good. The ribs were the best meat, the rest was on the dry and bland side. But the BBQ sauce was pretty good. They had unsweetened iced tea but no artificial sweetener. There was no butter for the cornbread which was kind of dry. You have to get your own utensils and sauces. Table was dirty when we sat down. It was fairly crowded and service wasn't great. Southwestern style barbecue with a Texas twist. Delicious cuts of meat, smoked to a tender goodness over hickory logs for 14 hours. Barbecue served in a spacious, "sports bar-like" dining room. How about a restaurant who honors active duty service personnel and veterans? If you've checked all of the "boxes," pay a visit to Lonny Boy's Barbecue, located in Hurricane, Utah for an amazing barbecue meal. As you enter the restaurant, you'll notice the rustic decor, and you'll notice the "social distancing" that's in effect, thanks to the COVID-19 virus. Yes, even in Hurricane, UT! It's a long ways to the order counter, but well worth the effort. The large dining room is separated into two sections by a low partition. You'll note the logs at the rear of the restaurant, stacked up against the counter. Those logs are indeed hickory, which burn in the smoker, to provide heat for cooking, along that sweet smoky flavor that hickory is known for. Lonny Boy's Barbecue's web site advertoses the restaurant's ordering method as "fast casual," but I look at it as what I call the "taqueria format." You make your selection from the overhead menu, pay for your meal, receive a number, and when your order is ready, it will be brought to your table. Yes, that's the way most taquerias work... There are no printed menus, as the menu is placed on the wall, above the kitchen. The menu is also posted on the restaurant's web site, and if you prefer, you can order take-out, or your order can be delivered to you, using one of the many restaurant delivery services. From the "Plate Meals," section of the menu, I ordered "The Sampler," which covers all bases, and all the good barbecue that Lonny's has to offer. Since today was my first visit to Lonny Boy's Barbecue, a sample of meat like a good idea, and a great place to begin. You get a sample of Lonny's barbecue meat, which is cooked in his smoker pit, outside, in back of the restaurant, over hickory wood for 14 hours. Each sampler plate includes one pork rib, pulled pork, smoked chicken, along with several slices of beef brisket. When you order "The Sampler," you get two side dishes of your choice, a cornbread muffin, and unlimited cups of Lonny's tangy in-house-made barbecue sauce. All of the meat simply melted in my mouth, as it was so tender, you really didn't need teeth to enjoy. The meat was juicy, tender, mouth-watering delicious, with a pleasant, smoky taste, which complimented the fine barbecue taste sensation, but did not overpower it. The pulled pork was definitely enhanced by dipping it into Lonny's barbecue sauce, but none of the meat on "The Sampler" required sauce dipping, as the sauce simply enhanced the already amazing taste. When it came to the sides, I really wanted to go with the "Garlic Red Mashed Potatoes," as I'd enjoyed a helping of them the previous Thursday evening, than's to the patriotism and generosity of Lonny Boy's Barbecue Express. After going back and forth and playing a few "mind games," the adventurous side of me won out, and I went for Lonny's "Fried Pickle," along with the "Fried Cauliflower" that an untold numbers of "Yelpers" had raved about. I loved the "Fried Pickle," as the dill pickle slices were battered, and arrived warm and tasty, right out of the deep fryer. They were delicious, but in the end, I regret not ordering a side of the "Garlic Red Mashed Potatoes," as they were some of the best mashed potatoes that I've ever eaten. Perhaps I should have ordered a side of mashed potatoes? The "Fried Cauliflower" was battered, slightly spicy, and deep fried to a golden brown. After devouring my cauliflower, I could understand what all of the "Yelpers" were raving about, as it was delicious, and unlike anything that I'd enjoyed since my last visit, five years ago, to the California State Fair. The cornbread muffin was very good, but unremarkable. Lonny Boy's Barbecue features a robust selection of local, craft beer, which I'm an absolute "sucker" for, and from the craft beer menu, I ordered a pint of Wasatch beer, presumably named after the nearby Wasatch mountain range. When Amy, who was taking order and tending the counter, asked what flavor I wanted, I did a double-take, and she began reciting the various flavors available, and when it came to jalapiño, I said that what I'll take. I'd never enjoyed jalapiño-flavored beer in my life! At $3.99 for a pint of craft beer, it's a bargain, and the Wasatch "Jalapiño" beer didn't disappoint. Imagine a smooth, German-inspired lager, with a hint of jalapiño, and you get the idea. Delicious! Lonny and his friendly staff know how to smoke meat to tender perfection, and how to serve delicious barbecue, along with amazing side dishes. Like others, I absolutely RAVED about Lonny's fine barbecue, and his unique FRIED CAULIFLOWER, which is a must-eat when you visit Lonny Boy's. read more

Not quite 4 stars (imo)... more like 3.5 as it was better than OK. Cool, kitschy BBQ joint in Hurricane, UT! Easy to find since it's on the main highway/road through town. You walk up and order at the cashier, and then either find a table and wait for your order, or just loiter near the now closed sauce bar for them to call your name for take out. There were several orders before ours so had to wait a little bit, but not long. The staff was busy and looked pretty efficient to me considering how many orders they were trying to get out quickly. We ordered the brisket sandwich w/ cole slaw and the pulled pork sandwich w/ mac n cheese. The meats in both were very good. Although, one of the slices of the brisket in my sandwich was super salty, so I just removed it and the rest of the sandwich was just fine. Good flavor, not too much smoke, good texture.... meaty, not stringy, not mealy, not tough... just that one salty piece. The cole slaw was too creamy and too much dressing for me so I only had a few bites. I didn't try the husband's mac n cheese but I did get a bite of his pulled pork sandwich... I thought the brisket was better. Oh and that bun they use for the sandwiches! Magic! It holds the meat but absolutely just melts in your mouth! The sandwiches were just meat and bread... no pickle or any other toppings in case you are wondering. I think this is the norm for BBQ.
