My mouth has been transported back to Puerto Vallarta Mexico! Yum! Since returning from my vacay to Mexico, I've been on a quest to find the best Chilaquiles in the Austin area. I must admit that this is only my second stop, but I think this is it! The restaurant is a small quaint spot in a shopping center. Not a lot of seating but they make it work. Check in with a phone number and they call you when a table is ready. I think the owner/Chef Mina was greeting and helping to check folks in. I came on a Saturday morning which appears to be quite busy. It was just me so my wait was short....less than 10 minutes. The music set the ambience as it was a great mix of pop/r&b from the 80's and 90's. Once seated, I ordered a Jamaica (Agua Fresca) to drink and Old 183 Chilaquiles (green sauce with a spinach twist) no egg and sour cream with Shrimp as the protein topping. I asked the server if they had black beans and he said he didn't think so. I asked him to check because I'd prefer them instead of Refried beans. He said he would check. Waited for my food about 15 min and upon arrival there were black beans, yes! However, there wasn't any shrimp on top. They were going to bring the shrimp on the side but I opted to eat it as is. I'm leaving this review here as I was not able to leave a review on Uber Eats about my poor experience. I placed my order 30 minutes ahead of time so it can be ready by the time I arrived. When I got there something didn't seem right as they were hesitant to help me and the worker mentioned my name when finally a lady asked if I was picking up an order which I replied yes. She then took awhile to go back and after awhile she said they are now working on the order saying the computer didn't receive the order which didn't make sense as they were packing other online orders. I feel this was done intentionally and purposefully on my specific order, I only say this because I have ordered here before and they are just very direct with me when I pick up my food. read more

My partner loves chilaquiles. I have developed a recent taste for them, so I knew we had to try this place out. For starters, we called in to place our name on their waitlist, which is always long on the weekends, but this should be taken as a positive. Unfortunately, it was written down incorrectly, so we never received a call. The owner happened to be standing there as we were informed of this. She immediately stepped in, apologized, and had us sat at the first available table. The space is very cozy, but the plates are huge. We opted for the Longhorns, level 4 heat, and carnitas as our topping. The flavor and heat were impressive while the tortilla chips were crispy. As much as we tried to devour them all in one sitting, we still had leftovers. No complaints though, especially since my partner declared these as her favorite ever. The food is here is absolutely fantastic. Some of the best chillaquilles I've eaten. Feels like a hole in the wall place sitting between random other stores in a shopping center but it is definitely worth any wait you have to put in. I've been here twice now, once on a Saturday morning another time for a Saturday lunch. There was definitely a wait for the morning but the lunch session was far easier with no wait for us, a party of 6 both times. We've had terrific wait staff both times with our most recent waiter Sergio taking really good care of us. He was always checking in if we needed anything and noted that most of the table was vegetarian and didn't want meat on a dish that traditionally came with it before it came to the table incorrectly. In terms of food, I haven't had a bad dish yet. I like the longhorn chillakiller, spice level 5! It's got a nice kick in heat from the habaneros but it's not any worse than your medium level spicy buffalo wings in my opinion. Overall a good spice level for a morning or afternoon meal. Also the portions are pretty big. I struggled to eat my entire plate of chillakiller on top of the chips and queso we ordered for the table. read more

Visiting Austin I wanted to find a local eatery to try out instead of a chain that I can get back in Houston. We lucked up because Los Chilakillers was less than 2 miles from our hotel and Mexican breakfast is my absolute favorite breakfast as I could eat this everyday for any meal. So it's in a strip with many other restaurants of very diverse cuisines. It's not large inside, so there was a bit of a wait (promised 20 minutes, but waited around 25 - not bad for a Saturday morning). It was quite warm inside as several times the door was held open for a significant amount of time, but it seemed to cool down quickly once the door was closed. My party ordered the Old 183 Chilaquiles, the Huevos Rancheros, and Huevos con Chorizo. All the food was excellent, and we enjoyed it very much. The Huevos con Chorizo normally comes with potatoes and beans, but I'm keto and do not eat those items, and they accommodated my request with no problems. The service was very friendly, if a bit slow at times, but if visiting at a slower time/day, this is probably not an issue. I checked in on Yelp which to my surprise popped up with a 5% discount for the meal (after posting to your Facebook and IG stories and tagging the restaurant) and I think they had some trouble with it, but took off $5 which I think was more than the 5% would have been, so that was very nice of them. It's definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in Austin and looking for some killer breakfast! P.S. the bathroom was very clean too! read more

Recommended by coworkers, I came here to try it out. I had to get it to go and the Tecolota was incredible! This sandwich was big enough to share or take home for another meal. It's basically build your own sandwhich. The bacon and tortillas were crispy and tasted great with the habanero sauce. The 620 chillakiller with barbacoa was delicious! The barbacoa was so tender and moist. I ate the whole thing and was full for 8 hours. Husband got breakfast tacos with bacon, egg, potatoes, and cheese with the habanero salsa. That habanero salsa was fire, absolutely delicious and spicy! Tacos were loaded. Can't wait to come back! Absolutely the best chilaquiles outside of Mexico!!! I live in far south Austin and it's more than worth the drive north for a meal here. I'm in love with the creamy poblano sauce. I picked up breakfast tacos to go and am so delighted to have found a new tex-mex place! These tacos are legit. I sampled three: papas and egg with cheese, bean and cheese, and SOYRIZO AND EGG!!! To any veggie forward folks reading this, you know that that is a huge deal. Of course my favorite was the soyrizo but the potato and egg was a close second. All tacos were stuffed really well, tortillas (although store bought) were lightly toasted before filling, the salsa was perfectly spicy. As much as I loved the food, I do wish it was bigger. We got there at about 930am on a Sunday and had to wait for about 15 mins for a table of 5. If you have a big group with it would be pretty hard for them to accommodate. Seating is a little tight, but their service is truly amazing. The minute we walked in we were greeted. I have been on a chilaquiles phase and this place made it justice. I completely recommend stopping by when in Austin. Each plate is very filling. The food was ok at best and the service when eating in is fine. However the to go is where my issue is. I placed 2 separate orders (going to 2 different buildings & food allergies) so they could be bagged separately and mentioned it 3 times on the phone, as well as when I walked in to pick it up. When we got the food and opened up the bags I got part of their order and they got part of mine. That sucked because I am a teacher in one building and my friend a teacher at a whole other school. This is one of Austin's top Mexican restaurants for breakfast! Los Chilakillers specializes in chilaquiles which is a dish that takes corn tortillas that are cut into pieces and are lightly fried and served with salsa, cheese, toppings, a side of beans, and bread. What's cool about this spot particularly is you can choose from 1 of 10 different types of sauces and they have over 27 different toppings you can choose from as well! (Some vegan friendly options as well like soyrizo and tofu!) The ability to create your own plate is so fun and with hundreds of combinations available, you can't go wrong with any! The two combinations I made specifically are: - In the first picture I got the 360 chilakiller sauce ($9.99) which is smokey chipotle and got campechana (+$4.99) for my topping which is a mixture of chorizo, chicken, fajita, and onions - In the second picture I got the Longhorns sauce ($10.99) which is a mix of poblano and creamy and habanero sauce and Mexican chorizo (+$4.50) for my topping Y'all these plates are HUGE - you could EASILY share one with someone else! Very satisfying and sensational to eat. Additionally, they make their own desserts in house and I got to try their flan and tres leches ($5.99/ea) and both are delightful ways to end the meal - you can't go wrong with either, just depends what you like more. All in all, I had an amazing time here! I know Austin gets a bad rep for it's Mexican food, but I want y'all to know it's all false. I've lived in Austin all my life, I've eaten thousands of Mexican plates at many different restaurants and had never tried chilaquilas until now. I was pleasantly suprised, i really liked it. Though it's just a really good version of nachos, I'd much rather have chilaquilas. I also had a breakfast taco and it was fantastic. Craziest thing though, there was a super sexy, beautiful, chef in a chefs coat walking around and wow, she is gorgeous. Later i realized there were pictures of her on the wall as "sexy chef Mina". Genius way to gain customers really. I couldn't take my eyes off her after i realized and then added her on Instagram to see more. The portion sizes are also gigantic!!! Which we were pleasantly surprised to see after the prices. The plates are more pricey than you'd expect, but you get a LOT of food. The food itself wasn't great. It was pretty heavy, the carnitas were very dry, and the horchata was way too sweet. I did like that they offered some legitimately spicy options. The New East Side is full of these places. The Second - Call it "Real Deal Salt of the Earth Mexican". These places can be Tex-Mex but are more often Interior Mexican with some Tex-Mex. The customers are Working Class Mexicans - generally immigrants or first-generation native born. They have high standards in Mexican food - even if the food doesn't cost much and is prepared in a truck. Southeast Austin is full of these places - and there is a huge concentration on Route 812. * * * Los Chilakillers is the perfect fusion of these two types. It is a Mexican Mexican restaurant. 90% of the customers are Mexican-Central American. The staff and the customers speak Spanish to each other. Nearly 100% of those Mexicans are younger than 35, highly educated, professional-technical and completely globalized. Think programmers at Dell, or graduate students in communication at UT. They are totally Austin-cool. The music on the sound system is American pop and rock played at blasting volumes. (They do a fine job on refried beans.) But you are here for the chilaquiles. The cook is an Mexican-origin Austin-lady wacko creative cook. These are not your grandmother's chilaquiles recipes. There are ten different sauces - each one developed by the mad genius in the kitchen. The sauces are pure amazingness. You are there to eat tortilla chips baked and steeped in those amazing sauces. * * * A few side notes: a) In the department of Austin cool, the vegetarian ingredients and plant based ingredients are listed first in their long list of add-ons. How often do you see THAT in a Mexican restaurant? b) Samuel C's culinary advice. The house is eager to sell you "add-ons" for your chilaquiles . The menu has a list of no fewer than 30 items that you can have dumped on top of your chilaquiles. Think long and hard before you order an add-on. Those sauces are pretty damm perfect coming out of the kitchen. The add-ons just can't compete. c) The cook has a glamour photo of herself at age 28 next to the cash register.
