One - Call it "Keep Austin Weird" are very cool trendy places Populated by Anglo Yuppies with a lot of outstanding creative types both in the dining room and the kitchen. The New East Side is full of these places. The Second - Call it "Real Deal Salt of the Earth Mexican". These places can be Tex-Mex but are more often Interior Mexican with some Tex-Mex. The customers are Working Class Mexicans - generally immigrants or first-generation native born. They have high standards in Mexican food - even if the food doesn't cost much and is prepared in a truck. Southeast Austin is full of these places - and there is a huge concentration on Route 812. * * * Los Chilakillers is the perfect fusion of these two types. It is a Mexican Mexican restaurant. 90% of the customers are Mexican-Central American. The staff and the customers speak Spanish to each other. Nearly 100% of those Mexicans are younger than 35, highly educated, professional-technical and completely globalized. Think programmers at Dell, or graduate students in communication at UT. They are totally Austin-cool. The music on the sound system is American pop and rock played at blasting volumes. I could hear "Bad Romance" from Lady Gaga five doors away in the parking lot. * * * How is the food? Awesome beyond amazing. The house specialty is chilaquiles. Other stuff might be good. (They do a fine job on refried beans.) But you are here for the chilaquiles. The cook is an Mexican-origin Austin-lady wacko creative cook. These are not your grandmother's chilaquiles recipes. There are ten different sauces - each one developed by the mad genius in the kitchen. The sauces are pure amazingness. You are there to eat tortilla chips baked and steeped in those amazing sauces. * * * A few side notes: a) In the department of Austin cool, the vegetarian ingredients and plant based ingredients are listed first in their long list of add-ons. How often do you see THAT in a Mexican restaurant? b) Samuel C's culinary advice. The house is eager to sell you "add-ons" for your chilaquiles . The menu has a list of no fewer than 30 items that you can have dumped on top of your chilaquiles. Think long and hard before you order an add-on. Those sauces are pretty damm perfect coming out of the kitchen. The add-ons just can't compete. c) The cook has a glamour photo of herself at age 28 next to the cash register. How many Austin chefs do you know who post "hot model" photos of themselves in their restaurant? * * * I love the ambience. I love the crowd. But I love the experience. Just when I had given up hope on finding good chilaquiles in Austin, I found Los Chilakillers. I feel I need to preface this review with filling you in on my love for Chilaquiles. Chilaquiles are my heart space and the Holiest of breakfast foods. As a Peruana, I'm only sad that my people didn't come up with them sooner. Chilaquiles Is a way of life for me and my friends, a weekend staple where we would meet over a plate, catch up on life, and share the joy of this perfect dish. In some ways, I will go as far as saying it has been the glue holding my group of friends together when life got busy and we didn't find time to meet unless it was for some magical Chilaquiles. So, with that knowledge and growing up in San Antonio, I knew I'd be sacrificing the unmatched family owned Mexican restaurants when moving to Austin...until last Sunday. When my friends and I arrived a few hours after opening, there was already a few people waiting outside to be seated. The place is small, about 7 four top tables, but our 45 min wait was beyond worth it. From entering, I immediately felt like I was back at home in San Antone. I was greeted in Spanish, which warmed my heart, and was added to the wait list. For those who are not Spanish speakers, please don't be intimidated by this, this place welcomes all gringo patrons and everyone speaks fluent English. After we were seated, we were greeted quickly and asked if we wanted appetizers, again in Spanish, and opted for some Agua Fresca and Horchata. The Horchata was a little sweeter and under spiced for my taste, but the Jamaica agua fresca was refreshing and hit just right. I also noticed that they were nearly out of the Jamaica which leads me to believe it's popular. I wouldn't recommend ordering apps unless you have a REALLY large appetite or you plan on splitting a chilaquiles plate because the servings are HUGE and quite dense with melty cheese. Me and two friends ordered the chilaquiles plate with the Longhorn sauce, spice level 2, an over easy egg and soyrizo, and our fourth companion ordered the chilaquiles with mole at spice level 3, over easy egg, and carnita meat. We were conservative with the spice level because a friend of ours who is Vietnamese and a friend to chilis, ordered the max heat the last time she was there and said it was too hot for her. If something is beyond An, it's beyond all magical spice resistant humans so we stuck with 2s and 3s. That said, because the Longhorn sauce has some habanero peppers in it, a level two in the longhorn is equal to a level three in the mole, and both could have been more spicy for our taste. I have zero complaints about the longhorn chilaquiles, mostly because I was embracing the nostalgia they inspired of my favorite hidden gems in San Antonio. The chips had the perfect balance of crispy softness, the beans balanced the sauce and cheesy flavors without taking any attention from everything else that was happening on my plate, the eggs were just the right amount of drizzly yoke that an over easy egg demands, and the sauce was a heavenly union of peppers and creamy goodness. The mole was just as impressive. I must admit that I'm very picky when it comes to mole as it's very easy to mess it up; most places either make it too sweet or unbalanced and dull. NOT Chilakillers. I would bathe in that mole it was so perfect. My only complaint is that I don't have two stomachs to make the experience last longer. The carnita meat was not anything memorable on its own, but paired with that sauce it was like they were made for each other. All this said, mole is a commitment. You gotta be sure you want that much of it, so if you're unsure, I recommend going with a friend and splitting two plates, one with a lighter sauce like the longhorn or salsa verde, and one with the mole. You'll still have leftovers so don't worry about not getting enough of one of them. The place will most likely be packed when you get there so be ready for a wait, but also be thrilled that you are about to embark on the best chilaquiles Austin has to offer. The staff is warm and inviting despite how busy the place is, and anyway, you'll be too busy thinking of who you'll bring there next (or lost in a chilaquiles coma) to care at how noisy the tables around you are. In truth, the noise only adds to the ambiance, so enjoy it and focus your attention on the food rather than serious conversation. Los Chilakillers gave me the one thing I always felt was missing in this town and I'm grateful. Can't wait to show all my Austin Born friends the chilaquiles they've been missing. read more

This place is amazing. Solid breakfast spot. Smells like heaven inside. We had pancakes, huevos racheros, eggs and chicken nachos. These were the BEST nachos I've had in my life. We didn't get the chillequillas because I had to make quick decisions with kids and I couldn't decide on toppings, but I have a very strong sense that they are equally amazing. Next time for sure! Hell to the yes. As a born and raised Texan I'm ashamed to say I'd never had chilaquiles. This was for sure the best place to give it a try. The atmosphere was very upbeat and the decor felt Austin proud and comfy. The service was on point from checking in to cashing out. We had mimosas and a michelada that were both very yummy. We had an amazing server named Sergio who took very good care of us and all the other tables he had. He was so spunky and funny. I eyeballed other customers plates and noticed how amazing their burger looked. My favorite thing about this spot is the damn sexy chef. She is gorgeous and so kind. She stopped by our table a few times to check in on our meal. This place is rather busy so be prepared to wait for a table. And it's worth the wait. read more

Lo and behold it turned out to be the best authentic food I've had in a fatty. Right away you feel that family owned love, you can really tell the owner put a piece of her heart in every single plate, wall art, music, even the restroom decor. We put it on the list and on the day we left w all that was going on we forgot about the place and headed to El Dorado cafe, well it being a Monday, El Dorado Cafe is closed. Thank you for that! The place looked cool from outside and upon walking in I thought it even more. Cool 80s music playing, good service, nice staff and the food, wow. Got the chips and salsa to start; chips great and salsa warm temp and heated flavor. Delicious. My order...and I'd order it again and again. We were told the wait would be 30 minutes or more and we waited 1 hour and 30 minutes from 10:50am. I was constantly checking in with the hostess to determine timing of wait and noticed that the person after me was sat before me. That right there gave it a sour taste. We ordered the 360 chilakillers and added egg, avocado, chicken and beef fajita. The chicken fajita had a odd smell which we put to the side. Everything else was fine. Oh my globs I can't believe I waited so long to try this place. Well actually every time I tried to eat here it's always packed haha. Now I know why. I've never been so impressed. I am actually not a huge fan of Mexican cuisine but mannnnn this place blew my mind. I got the longhorn chillaquilles and went straight to flavortown. I haven't had something so good in so long lol. My husband had the steak fajitas, which he said was delicious as well. Our server? The best. We know him from tumble and he's always the sweetest. Delicious food + amazing service = best experience. Another cool part was seeing the headchef Mina herself in action. Reading her backstory and meeting her was really cool. This is a cool spot. The outside doesn't match the inside. I would completely overlook this place without yelp. Is small but the tables are separated enough to feel spacious. I ordered to go. Easy process, got my food in about 15 minutes so I wasn't complaining. The food was good but needed the salsa to add more flavor. My only complaint is the tortillas! Pass on those. I was expecting fresh hand made tortillas since it's Latino owned but unfortunately I was mistaken. Hopefully they change that because I believe tortillas make or break Mexican restaurants. Y'all, I am hooked! These chilaquiles are out of this world. This is a small storefront slinging giant plates of tasty food. Everything is fresh and served in a timely manner. Their chips and salsa are great, and I love that the salsa is served warm. Their guac is also fantastic. Know that there is limited seating at the restaurant, but they do have the option for takeout and I can vouch for the fact that it's just as good when you take it home. Today will mark my fifth visit since I first tried this place a month ago. My first time in, I underestimated the spice! I got the MLK with the habanero sauce. Y'all, I was in pain, but I finished every bite because it was just that good. Every time since, I have opted for the Longhorn spice level 3, which is just right for me. The serving sizes here are enormous! My wife normally gets two meals out of her plate. I highly recommend the campechana as the topping, I have gotten it every time and don't plan to change. Each plate is served along-side a small fluffy roll that I feel like they make in-house. These guys do not hold back on spice, so buckle up, give them a try and thank me later. read more

Excellent experience here. First time visit and super pleased too. After reviewing the menu I ordered the Longhorns chilaquiles plate. I also ordered chips and queso and a side of Spanish rice. Folks, I can honestly tell you that this was the tastiest plate of Mexican food that I've had in 10 years. I eat a lot of Mexican food but I find that so many places are just OK. I couldn't finish my food and had to get a to go box. The Longhorns plate had the fajita chicken added to it. Everything came together nicely and the combination of refried beans, creamy pablano sauce, chicken and chips worked perfectly. I left completely satisfied and so glad that I finally made it here. The dining room is on the small side but I only had to wait a few minutes for a table to open up. The staff was friendly which is always a plus. I'll be back to try the other plates as well. In route from North Austin south this restaurant came up. We were looking for authentic and flavor with heat. Let's say this place did not disappoint in any which way. Beyond delighted from the personal greeting, the requested Salsa and chips (yummy warm salsa), high michelada, and our chilaquiles. We both tried two different sauces. Both were delicious ondeedul but the Long Horn Sauce was our favorite. Level 3 spicy was perfect. The owner was on site and helping. The chef came around made sure everything was to our liking. I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I walked into Chilakillers. With a line out the door and lots of happy people sitting at their tables, I knew I had stumbled upon something special. I ordered the longhorn and the waiter asked if I wanted to add anything. He recommended pastor and avocado which I agreed to. One of the greatest meals I've had in a long time and I've been craving it ever sense. It came out to $19 after my additions, but I had it for two separate meals so if you order this, split it with a friend. Lastly, the staff were extremely kind and helpful. In the mood for some flavorful Mexican so we searched Yelp and saw Los Chilakillers with great reviews and decided to give it a whirl. Whenever we try a new spot we order a bunch of different stuff to get an idea of what a place offers so we can really know of it's something we'd eat again. The enchilada entree: I'm used to verde sauce being the spicier option than red but here that was not the case. The shredded chicken was tender. The beans and rice lacked flavor, I found them to take on the taste of whatever was cooked in the pan previously. Chili Con Queso: we ordered the large and it was a good large portion although the size was not described on the menu so we just guessed. It is a very yellow, thick queso. Chips y Salsa: the salsa reminded me more of pasta sauce than salsa however it did have a kick which I appreciated. The chips had a nice crunch. Chicken Quesadilla: fine, good for a kid probably. The chicken was in chunks, not shredded. Copious amounts of cheese and a large portion, no vegetables inside but in a separate container to put on top. 620 Chilakillers: the red sauce was the most flavorful but the portion of the sauce was not enough. Honestly I think this would be a great entree when you can eat it at the restaurant, the chips were all pretty soggy because we had it delivered. Five Killer Taquitos: my husband really enjoyed these and described them as "slightly gourmet little tacos." It was his favorite of all the items we tried. Churros: there was almost no cinnamon/sugar on them which is the way I've had them in both Mexico and in the US but they were filled with a cream and had a syrup on top? They were fried to a great texture. Nothing to write home about but not bad. Overall I wouldn't order delivery from Chilakillers again but I would consider stopping in post covid to try the Chilakillers when they're fresh and crispy. It seems like this is a new spot and perhaps they're still working out the kinks so I'm optimistic that it could improve. I will say if you really like true Tex Mex you'll probably enjoy Chilakillers. read more
