3/19 about 1pm Called ordered a small enchilada chicken/green plate to go. Believe it was the manager that took my order, he was peasant on the phone and upon pick-up. Order was ready as promised. Food was hot, presentation was wonderful, right amount of chile and good spice. The chicken however was in big chunks, flavorless and very dehydrated. This place is always our go to when we are in queque! The food is always consistent and delicious. We always split a plate cause they give you plenty to share! They also have a full service bar. All the servers and especially the bartenders have been there for a while and they are always pleasant and helpful on food questions. The salsa was complex and interesting, while the chips were just ok. We ordered the chile rellenos platter and the cheese enchiladas from the lite menu. The chile rellenos was one of the best versions we've ever had; the enchiladas and sopapillas were below average; and everything else was average. We put in a a to go order for 5 people. We had a drink in the bar while waiting for the food to be prepared and were given free chips and salsa. I forgot the salsa here is sweet - they must add sugar. I don't like it. We arrived home to discover missing items. The chips were not good. Maybe they need an oil change in the fryer? But i digress this location both the bar was nicely lighted and fun, and the food was as good or better than the others. Los Cuates is overall decent Mexican/New Mexican but their salsa is absolutely addicting. I think the best reason to check them out is for their reasonably priced margaritas (around $6 for a house margarita) and their unique salsa. The salsa is on the sweeter side, I assume maybe there is some mole in there as it has a dark red color. Service is friendly but sometimes they are slower when it's busy, highly recommended sitting in the bar area for smaller parties. 10/21: Took a New Mexican friend here for lunch/brunch and it was only a 20 minute wait. Not too crowded.. Sat at a table in the bar and was served by an EXCELLENT bartender. He was gracious, attentive and poured me a delicious Flavor of the Month Blood Orange margarita. Oooh weeee.....Delicious! He consistently refilled our waters, checked to see if we needed anything ans just like magic, a plate of Ground beef enchiladas (rolled not flat), beans and rice and a Combination plate quickly appeared. First of all, the place was packed on a Friday night, which is always a good sign. The hostess was super sweet and friendly. She even complimented my wife on her shoes. We asked about the happy hour when we walked in and they were really great about getting us seated and taking our order before it ended. Our waitress was friendly and fast and several employees came to check on us. I highly recommend the House Margarita and the chips and queso. And you don't have to sit at the bar to get the happy hour prices! This review was meant for the LOMAS Los Cuates location. We have nothing but awesome feedback for the Menaul location. I'm not sure why it posted here. We had just been on vacation, and when we returned, we wanted our favorite Los Cuates dinners. As we drove into Albuquerque and I placed the order on the website with a completion time of 20 minutes, by 8:15 ish. We arrived at the take out desk at 8:24 pm. We had paid online with my debit card but decided to pay a tip in cash. Dinner came out to $76.04, when we walked in, and we heard the staff asking if we had left a tip. The girl bagging our dinner said no. We walked in, gave her my name and held up $10, and said, "Here is your tip." I think she may not have realized we heard them talking about the tip. We live 30+ miles away from the restaurant. We arrived home, and I began handing out the 3 meals ordered. The first plate was large ground beef red chile enchiladas, which looked and tasted great. 2nd was a shredded beef red chile chimichanga plate, looked and tasted great. My meal was a shredded beef quesadilla. Which should have been a large flour tortilla with cheese and grilled beef, served with olives, tomatoes, jalapeños, shredded cheese, guacamole and sour cream. The picture below is a slice from that meal. In the to go box, a quesadilla with shredded beef and cheese, no olives, no tomatoes, and the jalapeños were in a small pile in the corner. Where was everything else? Since when did a quesadilla become a build your own? And how would I add the jalapeños to it when the shredded cheese inside had fused the top and bottom of the quesadilla together. Placing the jalapeños on top would now make this a tostada. I wanted a quesadilla. I am so disappointed. The order also had a quart of salsa (loved it), a pound of chips, and lastly, a quart of queso. The picture below shows the queso (we added some of the salsa to it), it was so thick it was like spreading cold cream cheese on a room temperature bagel. We have tried heating it up again (started smelling burnt almost immediately), but it didn't loosen up. Again, we were so disappointed. We couldn't call last night because they were closed by the time we arrived home. I'll call today, but it's too late. For dinner, I had chips and salsa, which really sucked after a 13-hour drive home. What happened Los Cuates on Lomas? I was simply wanting an acknowledgment and maybe an apology. I won't say we will never eat at Los Cuates again because we will, but probably not the Lomas location. read more

My travels have taken me to Albuquerque, NM. The hotel recommended Los Cuates. We were immediately seated and given water. We first received chips and salsa. The chips were good but the salsa was awesome! It does have some kick but not overwhelming. I ordered the 2 tamale plate with green chili sauce (NM is known for green chili). They had kick but the tamales were awesome!! They were big and soft. Not over cooked to the least. The pork bursted with flavor! I'd give this restaurant 5 stars if it wasn't for the service. Our server was rude and acted like we were inconveniencing her even though we were the only table sat in the area. So good is 5 stars but service was 2-3. A bland, lackluster restaurant with slow service. We went to dinner on a Saturday. The restaurant was partially filled and they had many staff on hand, so capacity was not an issue. Despite this, service was very slow. I ordered the ground beef enchiladas with red sauce. The meat inside the enchiladas was not spiced, nor did it have any grease it had been cooked in, so it was quite dry. My husband got a stuffed sopapilla that also included ground beef, and he said his meat was the same. Perhaps there is just a supply of pre-cooked unspiced ground beef in the back they use for any dishes that require it? They seem to be relying on the chile in the dishes to make up for the lack of flavor. The enchiladas came with refried beans and rice, both of which were also bland. The server forgot the sour cream I had ordered on the side. The meals came with complimentary chips and salsa and sopapillas. The chips were warm and salty (no complaints there!). The salsa was smoky, thick, and BBQ-like; I could not discern any individual vegetables in it. A different flavor for sure. Overall, a disappointing experience. The ground beef I cook at home has more flavor. We wouldn't go back. read more

It seems the problem was in the kitchen with the cooks. Sitting in the bar hearing many plates were missing rice or other issues with their food. It took my waiter that was also working in the main restaurant a long time to get to me. I always ask for the taco salsa for my chips for they serve a deep red one that is too sweet for me. Waiter finally took my order and before ending he asked if lettuce, tomato and cheese would be okay, which I ordered steak tacos and I said yes. When they were delivered there was no lettuce, tomato or cheese on them. PLAIN!!! I already knew the issues going on with other tables, so I decided to enjoy as is, since I don't like returning my food back, due to not knowing what the cooks would do. In the meantime, two employees had a conversation about another employee was getting better treatment from management. One said they had more longevity that that employee and it was not fair to them. It seemed like my favorite waiter had left the business. I worked in HR and I was always fair and fought for fairness. I guess the Menaul restaurant is cut off, since it is out of my way, with the Lomas location being much closer. I just like that waiter that quit is way I went there. Blood orange margarita to match, and you'll note the chips and salsa is empty in the pic - their salsa is outstanding, darker than typical with an awesome roasted flavor. I added the sour cream on top just because I felt like it, try it if you have not. Outstanding meal. The restaurant was busy, and you might guess why - its really good food. Always a great place for New Mexican food. This particular location in Albuquerque isn't as busy as the Lomas location. Combanacion de carne asada is a good choice, personally. The salsa of Los cuates differs from other New Mexican restaurants in that it's not similar. More of a purée, piqiun style and a little on the sweeter side , it's a must. I had a carnitas skillet instead: chunks of pork embedded in a mixture of cheese, beans, and green chile. Also had potatoes on the side which wasn't mentioned on the menu. As this is a dinner dish, it comes with sopapillas, the crowning glory of NM cuisine. 2 of them for a single diner. I have always enjoyed Los Cuates. They provide some of the most unique Mexican food in the city, led by their salsa. Unlike traditional tomato salsa, it is more of a mole. It is thicker and sweeter, sort of a wonderfully spicy BBQ sauce. Los Cuates has a wide variety of dishes. I'm not sure anything stands out as their "signature" dish. I enjoy the combination plates, which offer an opportunity to sample a number of foods. The Combination Marcus and the Combination Los Cuates are favorites. Portions are significant, so their prices are fair. It isn't cheap but it is fair. Finally, they have a great bar. Surprise, the margaritas are the way to go! They've been around a long time and they know what they are doing. Worth the visit, but remember, the salsa is different. read more

The chips aren't over salty, and the salsa is the perfect spicy level (I'm a baby when it comes to spicy food). All the dishes came out hot and fresh, and I really liked my huevos rancheros. This place is a train wreck. It was not busy and it took two hours from the time we were sat at our table until the time we left. We had two waters and two enchilada plates. It took at least 10-15 minutes to get menus and longer to get chips. No salsa, that came later. Two tables walked out. One table complained to the manager about an order being wrong. He was a complete dial tone. The lady cleaning tables was just in the way. We had so much time on ours hands I actually timed how long it took her to clean a 4-top... nine minutes. Well....... Truly disappointed! We have had some bad service and some great service. My friend and I love having girls day in the bar twice a month. Two days ago we arrived right at 11:00. No water, chips or salsa. No staff member ever spoke to us. The female manager looked and me and went straight into the kitchen and I never seen her again. Fifteen minutes later, we walked out! It's sad. I think that's the last straw. Some of the staff are amazing. But they weren't there. This eating establishment won't last much longer. The management needs training. Food is good here the only reason why I gave 4 stars rather than 5 is because I'm just used to the Mexican food spots in Los Angeles where they have taco trucks in every corner as well as great hole in the wall spots that you really cannot beat in Los Angeles. The chili relleno was spot on, but arrived before the enchiladas. The carne adovada enchiladas came out as just carne adovada. It was quickly replaced. Good.
