In an economy like this every penny counts, which is why I love Los Primos with their tasty, huge and oh so cheap menu! Their portions are ginormous, but their prices are wayyy cheap. I pay about $6 for a huge veggie burrito and it lasts me for several days! Plus, it is completely customizable and they make it fresh right in front of you. The only problem I have with this place is that the guys working behind the counter aren't usually the brightest bulbs in the box and don't speak very good English...but I'm willing to make this small concession for fresh and delicious Mexican food! I have been a regular at Los Primos for over a year now. On average I visit 1x a week, usually on a Friday night. I live close by so I walk there and I either eat there if there is room, or take it back home. I recommend the following: 1. Eat it there. If you do, you will enjoy a nice hot flavorful taco/burrito/etc. If you don't eat it there then by the time you get home, your food might be soggy and cold because of all the ingredients - esp the salsa and lettuce. If you must take it to go, ask for the salsa and lettuce on the side and you won't be disappointed. 2. Don't eat with your eyes! They have HUGE portions. I can only eat 2 tacos max. Trust me, I LOVE to eat and I have a hearty appetite, but I don't dare to eat a burrito alone, or more than 2 tacos. 3. Think Pork! We've all had Pollo and Carne Asada, c'mon and order the carnitas. They are soooo yummy. Yes, carnitas are fatty and greasy, but they do a nice job at Los Primos of cutting the fat off. 4. Be prepared for a long line! That is only a sign of great food to come. If you see 5-7 people in line, it means its worth it. So be patient! 5. Snobs stay away! Yes, this place is not cute/sassy/trendy. Yes, the guys speak spanish, hello they are mexican. Yes, they play mexican music and their decor is not "gringo" style. Oh and yes, there might be "construction type guys" there. Who cares. This place has heart. You know why? Its run by real people and not some faceless corporation. Its very budget friendly. You can enjoy a meal for less than $10. Yum!! I have a hard time finding good burritos in Orange County but this little taqueria has impressed me! I got a Burrito Especial, which was carne asada, rice, beans, salsa, cheese, and I added guacamole. The carne was deliciously cooked and even slightly crispy from the grill. It all tasted great together. I wasn't crazy about the rice, but everything else was superb. I'll definitely be back! Oh, and they had some crazy spicy salsa. It was sort of an orange-red color. To be fair, I was slightly hungover so the spiciness might have been just too overwhelming for my taste buds because I can usually handle really spicy foods. Los Primos is awesome. Not fancy. Just simple & great mexican food. A lot of it for nothing. I had the $4.99 Burrito Especial. I could not finish it & I love to eat. It's got to be about two lbs. of food. Not sure what Los Primos Sandra O. "nothing is fresh but microwaved" was visiting, they make it all right in front of you. I enjoy Primo's Pastor is great, you just gotta get there in time to get it. Asada is usually great. Breakfast burrito will last you all day. Haven't had the Mr. Serious because my 15 passenger van isn't big enough to haul it back to the house. But I've heard good things. Taquitos are some of the best. Great food. I had the Veggie burrito and it was amazing. It was huge (I'm talking like at least double any other burrito i can think of) and like $7. I could have given 5 star except for the seating is on the non-existent side and it's definitely intimidating being the only non-Spanish speaker. Believe me, 3 of the 4 guys working acted as though they didn't understand the words "tapatio" or "salsa" until a girl asked for the same thing. Very small place in a strip mall, but I love this place. Huge portions at very, very reasonable prices, but best of all the food is fantastic. A lot of local Hispanic working people line up at lunch time, which indicates (to me) authentic food, and not expensive. Try the Burrito Especiale, carnitas. I live nearby, so I go here often. Everything at Los Primos is big. I usually get the Dr Carlos veggie burrito. It is massive. It'll make you cross-eyed. They line up two huge tortillas next to each other, fill it with good stuff, and then wrap it into a burrito the equivalent of 2.5 full meals. The shrimp burrito has a great tangy savoriness. It includes sautéed peppers. It's delicious but can give you a little heart burn. The Tostada Grande is also a favorite of mine. You can get it to-go even though it's really big, they'll just wrap it in foil. read more

This is the first review I've ever written for any place ever. I am THAT compelled to rave about this place. Their burritos are so amazing, for every meal. You can get a giant food-bomb of a rice and beans burrito for less than 4 bucks, or spend an extra dollar or two for their amazing Gringo burrito, Chirizo, Especial, or if you haven't eaten in five days, you can get the very-aptly named Mr. Serious burrito. The food is great and cheap - it's no wonder why it's such a hot-spot to the local Newport Harbor Highschool and a favorite for everybody in the area. But aside from the food, the staff is SO nice! My friend and I, who have been very diligent regulars for a few years, stopped in the other day. My buddy didn't have any money, and one of the workers took notice and immediately whipped him up his favorite burrito for free. A few minutes later the same worker was slicing an avocado, and I told him it was beautiful, and he promptly replied "You're beautiful!" and gave the avocado to me. It's just that kind of place. And a quarter into my process of eating this massive carne asada burrito from this hole in the wall spot in beautiful Newport Beach... I noticed the spoon slicking off my lips. My 3 napkins became so transparent --like I wiped the foreheads of a class of musty middle schoolers. For the bottled water and carne asada burrito ($8.07), I should've just gone to chipotle. The ingredients would've been fresher, delicious, and satisfying without all the grease. There would've been AC instead of muggy air. I thought I'd try this place out because of all the positive reviews. What the fuck? I've heard the burritos are large, I can see why, the burrito was about 75% rice, the black beans were dry, and the carne asada was so dry it almost crumbled in my mouth. I've been here at least 15 times. Each time I got the California burrito (~$5.75 post-tax) with Carne Asada-- until today. I asked for the same thing, twice, the woman even explicitly mentioned getting the carne asada from the back, and I was the only one there. The thing I got had chicken that tasted like 100% soggy water in it, no explanation, and as of writing this, hours later, I got a free wonderful extra surprise trip to the toilet hours later. I eat predictably, and nothing else today, this was unusual and totally a Los Primos bonus, I got one the last two times with the meat I asked for. I used to like the place because it was the only $5 burrito near Irvine, but, no, now that I found El Toro Bravo across 55 and the Chipotle at Bison and MacArthur this place is actually terrible. The lettuce is bad even by lettuce standards, it might as well not be there or be cardboard, and the cheese is the same lousy stuff we had in the elementary school cafeteria. The meat tastes mostly of water (chicken) and/or pure salt (beef), and it gives you the runs. Yes, the salsa is pretty good. El Toro Bravo is only about a mile away and it's fantastic in comparison. Or paying $1 more for a burrito at Chipotle is at least five times better as a result. If you want a tasty hole-in-the-wall Mexican experience (where they won't lie to your face or treat you like secretly hate you) just go to El Toro Bravo across 55, or Picante Martin's on Balboa, it's way tastier and nicer, or Taco Mesa, Taco Rosa, or Chipotle, or Gordo's in the bay area. It's completely worth the extra 7 minutes of travel to go to any of these (except Gordo which is obviously about 7 hours away). Oh, and you won't end up on the toilet. read more

I worked down the street from here for years, and on most days Los Primos was my lunchtime spot of choice. I love their burritos, tons of cheese and other tasty goodness, but be careful if you have never been here before they are HUGE. The Mr Serious is ridiculously large, I just always stick with their regular burritos. Unless you are a big big big eater, it will be more than enough to provide you with a couple meals. The "primos" behind the counter are a bunch of good fun loving guys that know how to wrap up these monsters. I have walked in on more than one occasion to catch a glimpse of a bottle being passed around in the back. When they get in a uh special mood, they might call ya some names in Spanish, but realize it is all in good fun. Great place, great folks, great food, and great prices. The Mr. Serious burrito is worth the money! Its thick and it spans from your elbow to your palm. The workers there are really nice and they make the burrito just the way you want it. The thing is I wasn't that impressed with the taste. It had a different kind of taste to it, and there was a bit too much lettuce in it and not enough meat. Yes I do realize I said they make the burrito the way you want it but I wasn't paying attention to the fact that they actually use lettuce. Oh well. I'd say the 3.5 star average rating for this place is just about right, but I'll round up since this place gives you huge portions and it's still super cheap. I usually just order the breakfast burrito with black beans, eggs, cheese, and hot salsa. It's a giant burrito (almost Chipotle size) and it's only $3! What a steal. I usually like my breakfast burritos with potatoes, but I like this one here because it's huge but i don't feel completely gross afterwards. The black beans are particularly good here. I've also tried their chicken tamales here and they're not bad either. They have a number of combo plates served with rice and beans in the $4-5 range, which I feel like is rare these days even for a taco shop. Comes with choice of beans (refried/black), onions + cilantro, rice, and I got mine without cheese. They brought out a fresh tub of pico de gallo (because they knew I was coming, of course) and you know I loaded up on that. I came in and ordered a asada wet burrito and I must say the food looked very presentable but the biggest thing that was missing was FLAVOR. I'm Mexican and I prefer my food in general to be more spicier. My suggestion is that they ask their customers if they would like their wet burrito to be spicy or mild. Because I know not everyone likes spicy food. But my suggestion is that you give your customers options. Don't get me wrong they can make a "good looking burrito and the size was great but flavor is lacking. You can make a mild chile sauce that has a little spice at least. The sauce I had on it was almost like sauce you'd use for making chilaquiles or enchiladas. Not your traditional spicy chile. I believe this place has potential. From a Mexican to Mexican take pride in our food. If I was the owner I would give my customers options. Because most people when they eat Mexican food are looking for heat and flavor. The best authentic style Mexican food in Costa Mesa for sure. One way to determine this, their Beans and Salsa Molida. Los Primos had both on point. I had their Pork Tamale, moist & nice size chunks of meat. I did notice if you take your order to go, they put it in a styrofoam container and microwave it to melt the cheese....not sure if they realize that's not good, but as soon as he put mine in the microwave I asked the guy not to microwave it. He said okay. I took it home and put it on a regular plate. Otherwise, quality of food was great! Definitely would visit to try the rest of the menu. read more
