The food was delicious and the staff was wonderful even with a packed restaurant. We had a five and six year old with us and it turned out one order of pancakes was done before all the other food was ready. Since both kids ordered the same thing the waitress was wise enough to split the completed order between the boys so they could start eating and then brought out the second portion of their meals when our meals were ready. This was brilliant!!! The kids were super hungry and this avoided a hangry situation that could have happened with more waiting. The portions were huge and we all left with full bellies. read more

I ordered the corn beef hash that came with a hearty amount of eggs, potatoes and toast (the orange marmalade is delicious) . The food was good and everyone was left satisfied. I went to Chicago for a day trip on Mother's Day. I did my research and came across this amazing gem and decided to go for breakfast. I ordered the Vegetarian Omelette as a Hobo Skillet, which includes their hash brown potatoes. Their omelettes are soooooo fluffy! The portions were great. My daughter's Mitchell Mouse pancakes were soo cute. It was filling and she couldn't finish it. The restaurant was crowded and the atmosphere had tables and booths. The customer service was great even though everyone was busy. It's fast paced. An extra treat was that the hostess was celebrating her 95th birthday!!! Lou Mitchell's is truly a Chicago institution, it's been there for decades and serves what I would describe as diner food - burgers, meatloaf, steak sandwiches, hearty breakfasts, etc. I do like the location, just west of Willis tower on Jackson, just west of the river - you can talk an nice walk after a heavy meal. They provide free milk duds before your meal and there's outdoor seating. I made a reservation the last time, for 7 people but they weren't ready. All is forgiven though because the lady was genuinely apologetic. I'll continue to come back for more, it's a great experience coming to this old school place. This place is great so I hate leaving it a bad review but I feel like I don't have much of a choice. I like to think I'm easy going about food and can find something to eat on any menu - except when they fail to mention that EVERYTHING IS COOKED IN PEANUT OIL - other than in small-ish script on the top right of their menu. I don't think a peanut allergy is that rare in this day and age and if you're a peanut forward institution you NEED to put up a big sign to avoid the drama of seating someone, getting their drinks, and then the back and forth of someone having to waste time asking, "Is there anything that would be safe to eat?" And yes, I know, refined peanut oil shouldn't cause allergic symptoms for the majority of people, but I'm the lucky few that does still experience symptoms. But more than that - a lot of people with an allergy aren't going to mess with the thing they're allergic to in any form, even if it only causes mild symptoms. So, yea, the food looked great and the people I was with said it was delicious. The ambiance was perfect. Prices were good. Service was great. read more

When we read about this historical breakfast spot in Chicago and knew we had to check it out. The walk was about 15 minutes from our hotel, and we left fairly early so the air was brisk and traffic had not picked up yet. On the outside, the place looks kind of like a dive. On the inside, it also still kind of looks like a dive haha. It's really your typical nostalgic diner from the 1920s, so not a lot has changed in the bones of this place. Since we got there early and sat at the bar, we did not have a wait. I grabbed a Chicago trivia card off the wall before we headed to our seats. It took a minute to get our order in, and the waitress was a bit busy. The place was elbow to elbow, so I would assess it's safe to say they are not concerned about spreading anything. The house coffee is pretty good, if a little on the stronger side. I got an omelette with spinach, cheese, and ham and the spinach was done so well - maybe better than I've had in an omelette before. I do not know what the potato has done to Chicago, though, because I couldn't find good home fries or hash browns the whole time I was there. Those potato chips were a tragedy - some hard like chips, some soft and wobbly...no. My daughter got the French toast and ended up not liking the bread used. Make sure you evaluate the type of bread if you're a French toast person. The fruit was nice and fresh, and you got plenty (I think it's an additional charge). When we were leaving, a male came up to clean the table and asked if we needed a box. I told him we were from out of town and he made some comment about waste. I definitely do not usually waste food, but as I said my daughter didn't like it, and we weren't home near our farm where I could give it to the pigs. I got the Greek sausage omelet which comes with toast (choice of white, wheat, or dark rye) and hash brown potatoes. The omelet was well cooked and the sausage was flavorful. Potatoes were good, especially the parts that got crispy. I did feel like adding Cholula hot sauce (provided at the table, along with Tabasco and ketchup) was very helpful for boosting the flavor of the omelet and potatoes, which were a bit bland/one note on their own but amazing with the hot sauce. When my husband and I arrived in Chicago, my friends were picking us up at the train station and offered to bring lunch from Lou Mitchell's. I looked at the menu and asked for their open faced tuna plain and my husband asked for the Club plain (plain = sandwich only). When we made it back to their place so that we could eat, I was so hungry that I ate my sandwich before I could take a picture of it! It was so good on their bread with a nice slice of melted cheese. The club looked really good with all the layers of toast, meat and cheese! My husband enjoyed his club sandwich and said it was simple and just want a club sandwich should be. We had such a warm welcome from Donna, a long time energetic waitress. She took us to our table where Chad, our server, had gotten our drinks and meal for us. I've made quite a few visits to Lou Mitchell's because I live right around the corner. Lou Mitchell's is my go to place when I want comfort food. It's nothing fancy, but it hits the spot every time. As long as I avoid rush times on weekend, I can usually get seated and served quickly so I can make it back to school in time for my next class. Chad is a great server and is always efficient, friendly, and courteous. The food comes out quickly and is always made correctly. Their pancakes are great if you're in the mood for something sweet. For savory dishes, you can't go wrong with an order of eggs, bacon, and Greek toast! If you are dining in on the weekends, get there early and be prepared with patience. It's a popular spot for breakfast even on the weekdays because of its location near Union Station, but it is extra busy on weekends when everyone is out and about for breakfast. On the side, I had bacon (which the menu states "crispy"). It was not. It was probably crispy 2 hours ago and then put in a steam warmer until placed on a plate. Negating every bit of crispness. I hate chewy bacon. On the menu the potatoes are described as hash browns. Their potatoes are scalloped, not hash browns. Not crispy potatoes like hash browns should be. I would not order these things again. The toast and marmalade are top notch but that's not why I went there. My husband had a Greek omelette which he liked. We shared one pancake and it was completely average. I'm so disappointed by this restaurant as I had heard great things about it bug an and we went out of our way to go here. Stopped in for breakfast. Knowing that they produce all their baked goods in house, I was disappointed to learn they were out of coffee cake. I chose instead to have the Greek sausage or letter with rye toast. While I would have loved to try the coffee cake, the rye bread alone was so delicious. The omelette was fluffy and had a good balance of egg to additions (peppers and eggs). My dining companion had pancakes topped with cooked fruit of the day - today's was cinnamon apples. The quantity of food - eggs and potatoes on the side as well as pancakes - was ENORMOUSLY generous. I probably only ate about one-quarter of what I was served. Each diner also was served a small dish with an orange slice and single doughnut hole. A lovely set of flavors and textures to brighten the morning.
