After my last review, I walked into Lou's today and they totally REFUSED me service. They were really rude to me and I actually had forgotten I written the review.. You think they would try to make things better and say that they were sorry, but instead they just totally denied me service per my yelp review!! This place is a GEM! My bf and I noticed this sandwich shop after grabbing some boba a few weeks ago. We had a sandwich craving one day and had the perfect excuse to try it. This is now our one of our favorite sandwich shops. We ordered the LLB Special, Italian Special, and the Ultimate Club all on Dutch Crunch bread. The ultimate club is our favorite with five different deli meats and Lou's special sauce. They also have a wide variety or drinks and chips. There are a few 20mins parking spots right in front of the store and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant is also very clean. Definitely check them out and if you plan on stopping by regularly enter your phone number when you check out to get reward points. read more

Legit sandwiches and for sure one of the best on Laurel Street. I didn't try the jalapeño spread but I did get Lou's sauce and I like it! I'm a mayo girl and don't typically enjoy sauces on my sandwiches unless it's garlic aioli or pesto but I'm glad I tried it! I made my own sandwich and got to choose two types of meat (with a choice of lean OR fatty pastrami - nice!), my sandwich was correct, and I didn't realize it'd be warm but the sourdough roll was perfectly toasted. Seriously PERFECT, like if you died and went to heaven and had lunch at Cafe du Jesus your sandwich be toasted exactlyyyyy like this. Just crunchy enough, won't take off 3 layers off the roof of your mouth like other places. I got sourdough though, I guess the true test for next time will be dutch crunch. The sourdough was really good though so that's going to be hard to beat. Can't wait to work my way through the official menu. Lived in SF off 19th Ave for 10+ years and never went to the original on Taraval which means I have some catching up to do at this location. read more

Really bummed regarding my most recent order. I was told their soup of the day was broccoli cheddar come to find out I was given tomato bisque. I had already walked there & back during my lunch break. I called regarding the mix up. Not given a real explanation, other than "I didn't tell my coworker." When I walked back to pick it up, I watched them microwave the soup. Truly unfortunate. Over $8 for microwaved soup. And the gentleman that helped me didn't even apologize and had his coworker give me the soup as he watched on. How about better customer service? read more

New sandwich shop ... much needed in San Carlos. My first time in the staff was friendly and seemed to moving as quickly and as efficiently as possible. I ordered some sandwiches and a breakfast sandwich. I understand portion control as I used to managed a deli back in the day .... But for the 3 sandwiches and one breakfast sandwiches that I got... They need to add some more meat instead of the fluff for the price is that they charge. If you want return customers they want to get value for the price they pay. The sandwich shop that was in there location before , did it that way and the constantly had a line out the door...... Located in the heart of the Sunset district, Lou's Cafe offers a variety of absolutely loaded sandwiches, each one with its own twist. I got the classic Ami-Cado sandwich and I must say it's the Lou's special sauce that really brings this whole sandwich together. I am a huge fan of the Lou's locations in SF on Taraval & Geary, so when I saw that they were taking over the old Gracie's location, I was more than thrilled! - Normally I'm a soft roll fan, but at Lou's I ALWAYS get the dutch crunch! It is different than any other I've tried. They toast most of their sandwiches slightly, and their bread stays in tact, and doesn't become crumbly. - Always get the Lou's sauce and jalapeno spreads. - My favorite sandwich is the Veggie-licious! (No, I'm not a vegetarian). Second is the Ami-Cado. Prices are reasonable and they have a frequent buyer stamp program to get free sandwiches over time. Very concerned for hand hygiene and food handlers training. Employee was gathering up trash cans, then went to cut my bread for my ordered sandwich. I went immediately to the register, told a different man to stop the other person from continuing to make sandwiches with dirty gloves. He states, "I'm the one making your sandwich." I said no, he should change his gloves immediately. He repeated himself and reluctantly told his coworker to FINALLY change his gloves. Employee didn't wash their hands. I have been going to Lou's in San Francisco for many many years. I have gone to this location three times in the last six months and the portion sizes are really really small on the sandwiches the amount of meat you get is nowhere what it used to be. The reason I'm not giving five stars is because of that and honestly I won't return if it continues to be that small of a portion of meat on the sandwich. Not sure if you have an option to get extra meat on the sandwich I know these times are tough and the cost for items are much more expensive. I bought a sandwich at Lou's Cafe for a quick lunch on the go while driving to the east bay, and since then it's all my fiance ever suggests when lunch rolls around during our work from home routine! I don't know how they do it, but every sandwich we've had from Lou's has blown us away with flavor, sauciness, bread quality, and overall scrumptiousness. This is coming from people who don't really think of a sandwich as a formal meal, either--the fact that my fiance would pass up a hot meal from elsewhere for a sandwich from Lou's is a true testament to their food. We usually split a tuna melt; half a sandwich is a square meal (not super, but comfortably full) for each of us. We've also had the Italian combo, which was also great. Since I'm fairly lactose intolerant last time I ordered the tuna melt I requested that only half have cheese, and the staff person was super conscientious about getting the order correct by double-checking whether I wanted half the amount of cheese overall or literally half the sandwich with cheese. The thoughtful and friendly staff only make me want to support our local sandwich shop more. Will surely be back time and time again. Thanks Lou's! read more

Drove through with my partner for some brunch sammies after reading a review that said this cozy little cafe had the best breakfast sammies in the peninsula. Can confirm. Our ultimate omelette sandwich and hot pastrami sandwich were soooo tasty. The portion was good, the proportion of filling to bread good, and the flavors were just right. The bread was particularly yummy--crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, but not so crunchy that it hurts the roof of your mouth. Hubby and I have been long time customers of Lou's since they opened their very first location in the Richmond district of SF.  Since moving to Redwood City, we were deprived of any good sandwich shops until Lou's opened another location in San Carlos (yes!!). I stumbled upon Lou's while walking down Laurel and decided to stop for a sandwich. As I walked in I noticed the chairs up and the team looked ready to go for the day. I apologized and started walking out when the gentleman behind the counter insisted I come in. Very friendly and polite and after a couple minutes of conversation I had my sandwich. My rating for the service a perfect 10/10. The sandwich for me gets a 9.5/10 ... the reason for that is because I typically like a spicy Buffalo sauce and this one is very mild and safe for everyone haha.
