Worth the short trek. It was a cold Sunday morning, but the place was busy with families, Gen Z'ers, young couples and lots of dogs. Out front, two girlfriends were hanging out with their matchas deep in gossip and clearly enjoying the morning. The matcha seemed popular, but I needed something hot. I appreciated that their drink menu had some personality, because a lot of coffee/matcha spots feel like they're copying from the same boring menu. I got the sea salt mocha and it was delicious. Smooth, chocolatey and just salty enough. My wife got some type of cereal milk latte, which sounded epic but was apparently just mid. Still, we didn't regret the walk. ChitChat is a cool little Sawtelle stop with good drinks, good energy and plenty of dog-friendly vibes. Pro tip: Afterwards, swing-by Yamaguchi Bonsai Nursery kitty-corner from the coffee shop. The bonsai garden is insane.

However, recently they've been playing AI generated music and it's very disappointing to hear. I would much rather hear one song on loop over and over again, than a playlist of AI slop. This coffee shop is so warm and cozy but the change in music really takes away from the space and makes me not want to come in. If you're cutting corners with AI, where else are you cutting it short? I hope this is something that changes because it is my favorite cup of coffee in town!

Over the last couple of years, the charm of this café has faded, culminating in a truly awful experience this morning. The solo staff member working today was incredibly discourteous. Because I had my leashed dog with me, she practically threw me out of the store. While she pointed to the "no dogs allowed" sign, I explained that I was only inside to order and planned to sit outside, something I have done on countless previous visits. After being forced to wait outside, my drink was left sitting on the counter for several minutes. The barista never bothered to let me know it was ready, despite the café being slow. To make matters worse, the beverage was poorly made, with coffee spilled all over the saucer. This isn't the first time I've experienced bad service here, but it will definitely be the last.

The drinks were very good and exactly what you'd expect from a quality café. But the food presentation--wow! It completely exceeded my expectations. We ordered the avocado toast, the breakfast burrito, and the egg on brioche. Every dish was beautifully plated, garnished with edible flowers, and served with a fresh, delicious salad. I honestly wasn't expecting this level of presentation from a café. The portions were generous as well, leaving us completely satisfied. I also tried one of their pastries that reminded me of a cinnamon roll. It was enjoyable, though as a professional baker and pastry chef, I felt the pastries were the one area with room for improvement. In my opinion, they seemed to prioritize elegance and originality over achieving the best texture and flavor. Even so, they were still good, and I appreciated the creativity. Overall, this was an outstanding breakfast experience. Beautiful presentation, delicious food, generous portions, and a welcoming atmosphere. I would gladly return.

the past 2 times i've visited malou, i've had great experiences with the drinks and service…read more however, this time around, i'm not so sure i can say the same thing. i visited with 2 other friends and ordered first out of the three of us. the last friend who ordered was offered a free dessert for some reason, which seemed weird and almost selective?? they don't usually give out free pastries to anyone... service was quick though, and staff was kind. i ordered a strawberry matcha latte with oat milk, and while the drink was a good size (16 oz), paying $9.50 total for a drink that's the same quality as different cafes in the area with cheaper prices, seems unreasonable and unrealistic. obviously, i won't be having this drink everyday (it's definitely a splurge). the drink was good, but it wasn't anything spectacular (or worth paying $9.50 for). plus, charging an extra $1 for a substitute milk is also pretty steep. i'm happy they use fresh strawberry puree mixed in their milk, so it's not overly sweet. the matcha was also super quick to oxidize, so that vibrant green color you see in the picture quickly turns to a dusky green. :( i've ordered the strawberry matcha before, and i SWEAR it tasted better just a few months ago! it makes me so sad because it used to be my favorite at malou. i've attached a picture of what my drink looked like in november 2025. (the picture with 2 drinks in it is from november 2025). the cafe is pretty small and has limited seating, so you'd be lucky to find a seat. similarly, parking is absolutely terrible in that area - the residential area is always full, and the metered street parking is so chaotic. i'm really bummed about this visit to malou, especially because i've had pretty good experiences in the past. the location is so convenient for me, but i'm not sure i'll be visiting for a while.

Also ordered for a friend and didn't realize her drink came without boba so be sure to double check the menu as you order so you get toppings (or not) as you wish. FYI - they have a rewards program, join earn points, and get a birthday drink (discount) too! There's a small seating area inside, quiet music playing, and people working/studying (with a sign to use your indoor voice). Vibe is quiet and chill.
