Lovebirds is easily in my top 5 list of best donuts I've ever had! I'm so glad that we stopped before the end of our Kittery trip. Their March menu had some great flavors, and my personal favorite was the brownie batter one. The ganache they use is rich, but not overwhelming, and the donut itself is soft but had that little crisp to the outer shell that you want. I also didn't realize until later that all of their options are vegan! Nothing about the taste tipped me off, which was impressive. I will 100% be stopping again when I'm in the Kittery area, or I might even pull off the highway any time I'm in Maine now! read more

My favorites aren't traditional donuts: the Friday to Sunday-only Fritter and the everyday Monkey Muffin! We made the 30 minute drive to check out Lovebirds on Saturday morning, upon entering we were immediately greeted by friendly staff at the counter. Before getting to the register to order, there's a wall of Lovebirds merch (tshirts, etc), cute stuff. We placed our order (Brownie batter, Boston cream, strawberry shortcake and maple), and then we hung out around the corner by the local photography wall, the decor is great, ample seating if you want to hang out while eating your donuts and drinking your coffee. Our order was ready very quickly. After we got to the car, we couldn't wait, we dove in and while it was delicious, I do not recommend trying to eat the brownie batter donut in the car, gravity got the best of the filling and the crumbles on top, I was a mess by the end, but it was worth it! The Boston cream was just ok at best, the filling was a little less sweet than I had hoped for. The other two were a hit with my wife, we'll definitely be back to try this months new flavors! read more

A small regret is that they were out of the smores donuts when we drove through Portsmouth, but otherwise the selection was quite solid for less than 2 hours before they closed for the day. We took this way too far and got a dozen donuts... we are a mere two hungry people, what were we thinking. Anyway so far we've tried the boston creme and the strawberry shortcake. I never thought donuts were that great before I went vegan, but now I understand that places like dunkin were feeding us all lies. Places like this can make a donut that is a notable life experience in itself. My partner isn't vegan, but two bites into the strawberry shortcake he announced that he is prepared to go on an all-vegan all-donut diet. Also the two people behind the counter were both vegan and therefore able to give us lunch recommendations before we got back on the highway with our box of donut treasure. No. Is it because they don't have enough help? No. It's because nobody works quickly. The line was out the door this morning, and the owner decided to come around from the back and chitchat with some customers while orders piled up and peoples frustrations begin to build. This is classic Maine work ethic. No one's in a rush, the customer is never at the top of anyone's list. They just go with their own pace, thinking people will just always accept it. We got there around 11AM and most of the donut flavor options were already sold out - there were about maybe 5 out of 15-20 flavors left so I'd definitely recommend coming right when they open. We got the Pomegranate one and the Glazed Brioche. Both were delicious! They were not overly sweet and had the right amount of icing/frosting as some donut shops put too much on top of their donuts. When you bite into each one there is a slight chew texture to it which makes it taste good! Wish I got some more to bring home! read more

I am continually impressed with both the basic but amazing donut varieties, as well as the super special ones. But I always include at least one Boston cream with my order. It's always the best one they've got. I'm vegan, so of course I'm excited to visit a place where everything on the menu fits my dietary restrictions, but I can't imagine anyone being dissatisfied with this place, vegan or not. But on that topic, they offer a hot chocolate with vegan whipped cream and little vegan marshmallows. What a splendid treat. I miss when they used to make weekly deliveries to Copper Branch in Portland. That made it so I could get these donuts more regularly. Sea Breeze donut: Brioche dough inside, cranberry/grapefruit glaze outside, candied grapefruit slivers on top. A little greasy, but fresh and delicious flavors. Coffee: Very high quality whether hot or cold. No milk or cream; just substitutes like almond milk and soy milk. The coffee is good enough to withstand these, especially a cold brew that may have been the best iced coffee I ever had. We arrived at 8:45 on a Sunday and there were only a few people in line and all doughnuts were in stock. This is such a great donut spot! I don't ever understand why people think vegan donuts won't be good. These are as good or better than many non-vegan donuts out there. I got the peach jam, cookie butter cookie dough, cinnamon sugar, and lemon berry. The lemon berry was definitely the favorite- a delicious, fruity cake donut with a little bit of crisp on the outside. I also got a strawberry shortcake latte. My family loves Lovebird Donuts. We drive from Westbrook to Kittery every 2 to 3 weeks to stock up. We get a dozen and freeze half of them for later on. We were introduced to them by Curbside Comforts, who has a limited selection of their donuts on the first Saturday of every month. They are always delicious, I love how their menu changes monthly and they are never heavy or greasy. I have a teen with severe food allergies, and vegan is the only option when it comes to sweets so we are so happy we found them. Lovebirds has easily become my new favorite donut place. Anywhere. Regardless of whether you eat vegan or not, if they're not on your radar then you're missing out. These donuts are decadent, delicious, incredibly creative, and inclusive. They offer made-from-scratch slow raised yeast donuts and craft cake donuts using quality ingredients. The menu changes monthly so they can offer seasonally thoughtful flavors (so don't get too attached to anything). So far, I've tried: maple bacon, strawberry rhubarb pie, Boston cream, and chocolate covered strawberry. They were ALL perfect and tasted exactly like I was hoping they would -- the maple bacon felt totally sinful, the strawberry rhubarb pie was a little bite of summer, the Boston cream was gooey, and the chocolate covered strawberry was dense and just needed an accompanying glass of prosecco. I am unashamed to admit that I ate nearly all four of them on my drive back from Kittery to Portland. No regrets. 11/10. Would do it again. Will do it again. And I know every time I come I'll be delightfully surprised at whatever new flavors they're rockin' - and I'll love whatever I get too! The coffee is fair trade certified and organic. There's also no upcharge on the alternative milks (of which there are several options: oat, almond, coconut, soy). The staff is soooooooooooooo good-natured and patient. The teenagers tried some of each. My sister had half as a late-night snack and enjoyed it.
