Holy Moly these donuts! Lovebirds could also be called "gifts from heaven" or "little slices of dreamcakes", although "Lovebirds" has a much better ring to it. For me, Lovebirds donuts are not ordinary donuts. They are a dessert worth savoring. The restaurant is always clean and it is nicely set up. The display case is super great to have because it makes it easier to know what there is available. We come to Maine from Vermont, and we always stop in. They offer a great selection on a rotating menu, so there's always something for everyone. I am not typically a donut fan, but to me, these are one of my favorite treats. The staff is well equipped at moving through the long lines of customers and quite polite to customers. There is a nice drink menu as well and lots of gluten free choices on the menu every day. This is definitely worth the stop if you are in or around the area. Love the vibe, love the food, love the coffee, love it all. This place does it right. Customer service begins as soon as a person walks through the door, and they know that! They greet everyone with a smile, and often times holding the door open for me. The case at the front with daily options is a nice touch to help customers navigate their very impressive donut menu. They always have oat milk too (which is a huge deal right now, every other time I go to a nearby coffee competitor they don't have oat milk, and it really isn't the same as almond milk; my oat milk buddies will agree on this one, it's all about the mouthfeel). I love their creativity when it comes to their monthly specialty donut flavors, and they are consistently so yummy! Just don't get a bunch and plan to enjoy them over several days, they harden up much quicker than regular donuts. Donuts the same day though? CAN'T BEAT THAT PILLOWY DOUGH, YO :) read more

{4.5 stars...} When I'm around people who also love to eat, I find out about new places, Loooves it! haha. It's a little harder to search on social media in less busy areas. I'm not anywhere close to being vegetarian, but I love it when new vegetarian/vegan places open up and serve "normal" food items, especially in smaller towns. The weekend of April 6th was the 2nd soft-opening weekend for Lovebirds. Deeeelicious! I even bought some to share with friends. I was a teensy bit disappointed though, bcuz with yeast donuts, I was expecting that Extra light/airy and soft dough (like the ones I was used to, back home in CA at those Asian mom & pop shops lol). Finally got back to Lovebirds and the Boston Cream donuts are better than I remember. Picked up a dozen for a party and they were a hit. Everyone loved them. Kids especially LOVED the glazed brioche. To start great name! Was in area on business, found this amazing place with the friendly staff! The non dairy threw me for a loop, but I enjoyed the almond milk. I got 2 donuts Chocolate glazed Boston cream. Fresh delicious and probably weighed like a pound for 2 donuts, it was a meal! So if in the area you have to check these guys out! BTW, 8 dollars for my large coffee and 2 donuts... If you spend that much or more at that chain that runs america...your wasting your money on air filled donuts, and over priced coffee. Very disappointed, I was excited to find vegan donuts, but I was immediately disappointed, the donuts were bitter/flavorless and hard. I got the chocolate glaze, Boston Creem and cinnamon sugar ones. The chocolate on the Boston Creme tasted like straight up cocoa (no sweetness), the creme was flavorless and thin, and like the others the donut was stiff and flavorless. The only thing sweet on the chocolate glazed was the glaze, which there wasn't much of, but that can't overpower the bland and stiff donut it is on, and like the chocolate on the Boston creme, the donut had no sweetness and just bitter. And finally the cinnamon sugar, similarly to the chocolate glaze, the OK coating could not over disgusting donut. The worst thing is I got there in the morning, so I'm assuming these were "fresh". Please fix this, vegan donuts are so hard to find and this was such a disappointment! read more

First off, I'm so happy that there's a specialty vegan donut shop even if it is an hour away from me!! I tried 3 different donuts - strawberry rhubarb, mint Oreo and cookie butter. The strawberry rhubarb was absolutely one of the best donuts I've had - it reminds me of donuts that I used to get at my favorite NY bakery growing up as a non-vegan. For the mint donut, I think the mint flavoring in the icing was a bit off and tasted more like toothpaste peppermint which I didn't love, but the actual donut was good. The cookie butter donut was okay in the flavoring department - good but nothing remarkable. My boyfriend got a cinnamon sugar donut which he ate a few hours after purchasing and said that it was rock hard. I know there are no preservatives in the donuts which could have added to this but my donuts that I ate at the same time were not hard, so not sure what happened there. Because of COVID and the fact that the donuts sell out quickly, the website said to call ahead or order online by 12pm the day before. I was unexpectedly visiting the area from an hour away so didn't have enough notice to order online and had plans to call early in the morning for a call ahead before flavors sold out. I called the establishment no less than 5 times in a 2 hour window and NO ONE ANSWERED. It rang and rang and rang and I could not get a hold of anyone at the place. When I arrived in person, (to see that the 2 flavors I was most looking forward to were sold out) I let the worker know I tried to call numerous times for call ahead and that no one answered. The response was something along the lines of "you can call ahead in advance" to which I replied that we did and the reply was still "you can call days, weeks or even months ahead of time". Okay.... is this your passive aggressive way of telling me that I shouldn't call day of - that I need to plan months in advance to eat a donut? When we kept pushing the issue that we called a bunch of times in different time frames and still no one answered, why is that - she told us that there is one phone line so someone must have been on it. She seemed to have a bit of an attitude, there was no apology that we couldn't get through all morning and again, we felt a passive aggressive vibe that she was telling us we waited till the last minute so not her problem. I will definitely be giving them another chance because I did really enjoy that strawberry rhubarb donut and I like that the flavors rotate but I would really like to see something done about the phone situation. If people need to call ahead then there needs to be someone answering the phone. If there is only one phone line that really is that busy that I couldn't get though calling a bunch of different times, then there needs to be a second phone line, a text line, a same day online ordering system, or something to remedy the situation because I almost gave up and didn't bother. read more

I read many mixed reviews on this place after I tried it, I must say I was a bit shocked at the breadth of the reviews. I paid $16 (after tax and tip, for 4 donuts) - OK, that's fine, I knew that prices before I ordered. Keep in mind a crappy donut at, let's just say "D", is now about $1.50 and they are 1/2 to 1/3 the weight of Lovebirds. They are also nowhere near the quality. Moving on from cost, their donuts were very good, while they were fresh. I think this holds true for any bakery product. I think what folks are getting hung up on is paying $4 and eating it 12-24 hours later and it's dry. Agreed, they are dry 24 hours later, just like any other donut. Fresh, they were delightful. I had a Rum Ball donut, which is simply a glazed chocolate cake donut, with a ring of frosting and a rum truffle on top, The rum ball was ok, nothing fabulous and light on rum flavor. The cake donut was wonderful. Moist and chocolaty. The other 3 donuts were of the brioche variety, one being the king of all donuts, the Boston Cream. This was a heavy (by weight) and very good Boston Cream. Thick ganache topping and tons of filling. The filling could have been better, but was not bad. Then a white chocolate/pomegranate glazed donut, which was larger and light and delicious. The remaining donut was plain glazed and sat around until much later that night. It dried out a little and wasn't nearly as good as the others. THAT'S ON ME! I enjoyed Loverbirds. I frequented Stonehouse in Barrington before they went out of business and they were very good. I'd say Lovebirds is a little better and a bit pricier, but that's fine. Also, for all you Gluten nuts, they seem to have a good variety of gluten free donuts, which I will not be trying. read more

So I asked for chocolate milk poor little hipster at the register looked a so surprised. First, I'm not a fan of donuts. I don't eat them, but I will try a bite occasionally to see if I will find one I like. Well, after trying these donuts, my husband said we have to move. We have to move, because this place is too close to our home. They are EVIL! (In a good way.) I absolutely LOVED these donuts. These little pieces of heaven are perfectly made. We had the blueberry fritter, Boston Cream, glazed and strawberry shortcake. I had one bite of each. By the time I went back to take a bite of my favorite, strawberry shortcake, it was gone. My husband finished it. My fault. I should've taken it when I had the chance. Next time, I'll get a whole one for myself and I'm not sharing. Highly recommend! Stopped at Lovebirds Donuts on the way up to Portland last weekend, about 20 minutes before closing. Much to my dismay, the only flavors left were chocolate ganache and old fashioned (not what I would have chosen), but we got one of each. Honestly, I was blown out of the water. The chocolate ganache tasted spectacular, and the old fashioned wasn't quite what I expected but it was delicious! We didn't try the coffee since I was already vibration-level caffeinated but we'll definitely be back to do so since the menu looked amazing. These donuts are amazing. I'm vegan and I love donuts and finding a great vegan donut option in New England is tough. We were DELIGHTED, OVERJOYED with the delicious donuts at Lovebirds. The Raspberry Berliner had plenty of delish raspberry jam with a fluffy frosting twist and the chocolate glazed cake donut was rich and dense- the cake was not too sweet, like a dark chocolate cake- with a perfectly sweet glaze. So often vegan donuts are way too sweet for my taste. These were absolutely perfect. We also deeply appreciated the single stall gender neutral toilets and delightful staff. Unfortunately, they lost the opportunity at a positive first impression- I even told the visibly grumpy woman behind the counter it was our first time and she continued with her annoyed and dismissive demeanor. I have already made a review but I just had to come back and write an update! Lovebirds has been kicking ass since the day they opened. They continue to improve and make changes. They take feedback kindly and are always appreciative. I want to highlight in this review their gluten free option that I tried yesterday. It was the maple glazed with smoked coconut "bacon" and it was everything I could want in a donut regardless of it being gluten free which was awesome. The base was fluffy and perfectly sweet, the coconut on top had a great smoky flavor adding just the right amount of saltiness. Damn, Lovebirds is doing it right here on the seacoast. The restaurant is nice and clean and the staff is really nice. They have a nice selection of flavor choices, however by the time I got home 20 minutes later the grease from a couple had soaked through the box. Within hours most of the box was soaked through. My town of Kittery is on the foodie map once again with a delectable vegan donut shop! The shop itself has an inviting and swanky yet very modern french bistro atmosphere. Charming mix-matched vintage china and plush seating. Very clean too. I have always been able to find a table. I've visited about 6 or 7 times now. I love to sit with my girlfriends or family and enjoy all the yummy offerings of this hip cafe. I wonder if they will have more outside seating (if the warm weather ever shows up?!). That would be fun. The donuts are delectable and def not your mama's donuts! In a very good way. I've honestly never had donuts like this before. I am gluten free (more on this below). The flavor combos are unexpected, fresh, and inspired. They offer three levels of donut experience, usually with at least one gluten free options in each category: SWANKY Usually three tiered decadent combos like Whoopie Pie, Strawberry Shortcake (with fresh strawberries), Black Forest (with cherries) etc. The gluten free versions are AMAZING. The GF carrot cake is a treat - nice huge piece of candied ginger on top (see what I mean - not your mama's!). SIGNATURE These are my 12 year olds faves...brioche style...very light and airy and wonderful so she raves. I haven't been able to try the brioche since I'm gluten free - but the family raves about them. My favorite of the whole shop is the gluten free chocolate glazed. I should take up running so I can run there and eat one everyday - haha. Zero gain calories then, right?! CLASSICS Traditional donut flavors - basic and classic. They have a nice selection of teas and coffee/espresso drinks. I don't do dairy, and I've been loving them all. I've tried most of them so far. The almond milk chai is a fave. I have a small wish-list: 1. I have had many comments from coffee drinkers (I'm a tea drinker) that I've brought to Lovebirds that there is no cream for the coffee. I'm sure there is a vegan creamer out there somewhere that might work. It's kind of a deal breaker for my coffee fiend husband I'm afraid. They keep saying the oat milk is good substitution...it is not apparently. 2. Let me start by saying I don't like things too salty or sweet or greasy. While I do enjoy the clean flavors of the GF donuts - even I am wanting a tad more sugar and salt in these donuts. I mean, they are donuts. :) The GF ones at least have a bread-y consistency that is on the verge of being savory. I've tried every single GF variety now - and the only one I found flawless is the Whoopie Pie - amazingly good. The GF Carrot Cake is sooooo close to perfection - just needs a little more spice and sugar I think. Maybe even more glaze toppings (with a pinch of salt) to make up for the GF doughy feel? I dunno. I'm happy to taste test anytime! Haha. They are soooo close. I know they are experimenting too - so I hope this helps. :) 3. There is something a bit cumbersome about the ordering process. All the staff is wonderful and warm and knowledgeable though. None of my wish-list takes a star away though. I love this place. I hope everyone gives them a try.
