Who comes to a grocery store and doesn't buy groceries? Me! I love Lowe's Boxcar Coffee and Beer Den. Tucked into a corner, it's a great place to relax with your favorite beverage. The booths are comfy, plenty of high tops, and a few seats at the bar. The coffee is excellent. I'm a purist, but flavor fanciers will love the available options. I'm going to try the beer, because I can buy in recyclable growlers - and it's tasty. But the attribute I like best is that while it's not silent, there's the usual hubbub, it's quiet enough to have a normal volume conversation with a friend or a group. Located at the intersection of not 1, not 2 but 3, three roads... ha haha ha... (A little Lebron / The Count mashup humor there) Lowes can cater to and elevate all of your grocery needs. I must admit as a former chef then afterwards living in Kansas City and Austin TX for 25 years and frequenting large grocery stores with almost all of the things I've needed under one roof; I've been very disappointed with almost all the grocery stores here. So, after my mother convinced me to stop by Lowes I was pleasantly surprised with a chain that "gets it" here in town. Walking in I found the place to be extremely clean with some of the nicest employees I've come across since being back in town. Moreover, they're rather smart; strategically placing fresh baked focaccia bread close to the entrance, enticing one's stomach to influence the power of the purse. Next, I challenge anyone to resist their smoked foods as the air is heavy with the sweet perfume. Please note that Lowes carries a LOT of items customers will NOT find at other stores. From the towns best selection of cheeses, rack of lamb, watermelon radish and on the list continues, I encourage all those reading this to shop this store for those harder to find items. As for instore made items, I've tried a few and would like to report my limited findings. First, I bought a loaf of olive focaccia bread a noted weakness of mine. I found it be pillow-y moistness, bouncing back to the touch with a good fragrance however the amount of rosemary in it will repel even the most persistent of demons (odd refence). I bought another loaf of parmesan and I had the same issue, just way to rosemary which I happen to enjoy. I wish they had an alternative without the herb but other than that it's awesome. Another success in the bakery was the Bavarian donuts which I highly advise not buying as they're downright addictive. Soft, moist and a perfect chocolate to cream ratio these things are illegal in 5 surrounding counties! As for protein, I broke down and got the smoked chicken wings and macaroni salad for lunch. Again, this would be a resounding success if it weren't for one overwhelming ingredient; in this case salt. I'm of the belief they marinated these wings in the dead sea as it tasted as if the cap to the salt shaker fell off when seasoning these wings. Otherwise, these wings hit on all notes as they were moist and had the perfect amount of smoke. As for the mac salad, everyone has their version of what are perfect ingredients so I'll just add this, they perfectly cooked the pasta. That is to say the noodles weren't soggy or cooked to death; rather al dente which is perfect for the summertime favorite. As for addins I think they're ok but that's very subjective. Again, a certified hit. I did grab the sushi one day but I'm not a fan of grocery store sushi for the simple fact that the rice needs to be warm and the fish cold as it creates a contrast in the mouth. That said I got the fried shrimp sushi and it was just like any other store, not great. Nothing taken away as I realize most people are happy with this. My point is if I'm craving sushi a grocery store isn't the first thing that comes to mind as a true restaurant has better quality fish and a more diverse menu. To summarize Lowes is a great place to obtain those harder to find ingredients with the best in store created foods among all the competitors out there. The people here are very nice and willing to help however please note you'll need to obtain a card to get the discounts, the one down side of Lowes, is they're a little more expensive. However, "it's a small price to pay" for leveling up on the quality meter. This is my favorite grocery store in town and it's not even close. read more

I about 50/50 when it comes to Lowe's Foods. The store always draws you in with their beautiful flowers and herbs surrounding the outside area and the displays inside are appealing. They have a great selection of everything, but overall very pricey. I do love the bakery. There are plenty of cakes, in various sizes and flavors to choose from. And their cookies are muy delicioso! The fresh bread selections are also tasty. There is a bar area that seems pretty busy at times. I've always thought this was a different concept, but it works. I've never ordered from the deli area, but they look like very good meal choices available as well. I will say that Lowes has great discounts when they have a sale. I find this grocery store to be a little pricier than others in the area but the selection of items is more. They have a great produce section. I like that they will cut anything up for you in any way you need (cubes, sliced, diced, etc) while you shop. It saves time throughout the week on prepping meals. The store is clean and we'll organized. The bakery is absolutely delicious. They have large cookies for $1 and they're made fresh daily. They also have wonderful cakes. They sell small pieces for $1. I ordered my daughter's 1st birthday smash cake from there and a cake for a friend's birthday- both were fantastic. They didn't taste frozen and thawed, they were very fresh. The bread bakery is one of my favorite things there. The sourdough is some of the best I've ever had. When fresh bread loaves come out of the oven, they ring a bell and make an announcement. Then, someone rides around on a bike seeing if anyone needs some! The coffee bar and beer bar are a great addition. You can walk around with a beer while you shop! I really want to love this store but it's just okay for me. The times I've ran in to get some produce, it hasn't looked any better than the stuff at Wal-Mart (read: not great) but much more expensive. I have found a few things there that I can't find elsewhere but, for me, the items I would usually buy at Wal-Mart are way over priced here and I'm just not willing to pay dollars more for stuff. Overall, this store is ok - unique items that are fun to buy and eat especially in the bakery, smoked meats, deli and coffee bar. Even the produce is fun to look at and they have bulk items and an interesting spice area. The floral department is one of the better ones in the area. BUT BUT... here is the main issue. Something ALWAYS scans incorrectly. Every single time. So I finally looked on their website and they have a Scan Right Guarantee. If your item scans incorrectly, you get it for free. Well, I have never been offered this before. I have to go to customer service and get the refund but I have never been offered the guarantee. So.. I recommend you pay attention to your receipt and the scan price. Enforce this policy against them! I fully intend to do so. It will be only way that they straighten this super-irritating problem out. I don't want items for free.. This is a grocery store that I have tried to love, but just can't. I have thought of writing a review sooner, but decided to give the store more time. After six months of nearly daily shopping at this Lowe's, it's time. First of all, Lowe's is an EXPENSIVE grocery store that positions itself in the top tier of grocery outlets in the area. That is all well and good. If you shop here, you accept that. The problem is, it does not operate like a top tier store. The first thing that hit me six months ago, was that for such an exclusive grocery store, the staff didn't fit the bill. With a few exceptions like Sue and Nathan, the staff consistently comes off as unmotivated, tired, uninformed, and disinterested. There is no "hustle" from anyone. Smiles for customers are rare, and even then seem forced. Multiple times I have asked employees for information on where to find items, or if an item will be coming in, only to be met with, "I don't really know," "I'm not really sure," "Maybe you can find it on Aisle 5, but I don't really know." In November I asked a member of the meat department if it was possible to reserve a fresh turkey for Thanksgiving, only to be told, "I don't know if you can reserve one or not. I don't even know if we are getting any this year." Of all the departments in this store, the personnel in the meat department are most in need of a shake up and a shape up. They come across as a bunch of arrogant, loud young men who are there for jokes and fun with each other, but not to serve the customer. One one occasion, I was not able to pass my cart down the aisle, because they were putting meat out while one of them was repeatedly kicking someone's baseball cap down the aisle oblivious that a customer was trying to pass. They also act as though it is an inconvenience for them to do a special cut of meat for you. On one occasion, I asked for a thicker cut of steak only to be told, "The ones that are already packaged are all pretty thick." There is literally no professionalism in this department! Besides issues with the staff, there are also problems with items being properly labeled and priced accurately. Be careful buying wine, since many of the labels that show the wine's rating are actually for different years than the one being sold on the shelf. Another recent incident had identical bottles of champagne with two different prices. The ones in the chiller were marked $11.99 each, while the ones in boxes right next to the chiller were marked $9.99. Checking my receipt at home, I was charged the $11.99 price. Finally, the Chicken Dance! For some unknown reason, the staff in the deli department is required to occasionally come out from behind the counters and perform the Chicken Dance. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be amusing or entertaining, but I assure you it is not. It is, frankly, annoying. I'm shopping at a high end food store, not a children's playhouse. And, I'm willing to bet the employees who have to perform this foolishness HATE it! But, it's an example of what I am trying to convey: This is a high end grocery store that has a staff and policies that do not live up to that high end, exclusive, professional goal. read more

Excellent perimeter shopping, especially if you have a Lowes Foods card. -You also get points that can be used towards receiving money off of gas.- That being said, ironically I have been disappointed quite a few times by the lack of fresh veggies options. However; the seafood, meat, and bakery options are all amazing. -I don't use the deli but when walking past, it looks like it has plenty to offer.- The beer and wine sections are large with lots to choose from, and yes you can purchase a beer or coffee during shoping if you'd like. The staff always seems in a good mood and like they genuinely want to be there. The Lowes brand items are less expensive but do not lack in quality or taste, and the company does a lot to give back to the community. Don't let the nice, clean, organized store fool you! The workers are not friendly as they should be, customer service sucks and some departments don't like washing their hands and using gloves! If the bread maker uses gloves for dough and the sushi lady can. Why can't Rachel in the bakery wear it? She wipes her face at times, and will continue decorating the cakes! No gloves. Leaves from the cake station and helps customers only to go back to the cake she left on the counter Not covered! Not to mention no hair nets are worn! One baker dropped the boxes of cookies and picked them up and placed it on the counter! Lowes is amazing! I would say it rivals Whole Foods. The store is always clean and organized. It's always well lit. The staff is friendly and helpful. I find it cute how the register lines are named after streets. With their reward program, you save 10 cents a gallon on gas for every $100 you spend in store. And let me tell you, it's quite easy to spend a lot. The prices are high!...not saying the items aren't worth it. But don't come here on a budget and expecting low prices. This is definitely not my weekly go-to grocery spot. But I do like to stop in every now and again to see what's new. On the plus side, the selection and variety of items surpasses any of the other grocery stores in the area. They offer a variety of local items, from fruits and vegetables to prepackaged meals prepared by local chefs. As soon as you walk in there's a chalk board with different activities listed for the month. This is called Gather Round the Table. From my understanding, you gather around a picnic table, and mix and mingle with other people. Everyday is a different activity, ranging making ice cream sundaes to building the best burger. They even offer themed activities for holidays! You can clip your own herbs. There's about 5 or 6 to choose from and they also sell potted herbs. Ever wanted to buy a live lettuce head?? Well no worries, you can do that here. Love wine?!...they have you completely covered. Scoop your own nuts and pour your own olive oil. There's a tomato bar and salad bar. If you can think of it, Lowes has it! The Beer Den...where you can grab beer or wine and sip while you shop! I have to say this is the best idea ever. I'm not sure how often they switch out the beer on tap but there's always new choices when I stop by. The dining area is comparable to an actual restaurant. It's cute, modern, and quaint. I'm not a beer kinda gal, but this is the place I would recommend beer lovers to come. Bottles, cans, room temperature or cold. There's craft, Carolina craft, domestic, imported, even single cans/bottles for sale. I just like to look at all the cool illustrations on each one. The Caramel Pecan Delight Cookies are to die for! First off this a super nice grocery store. It's even more fancy that Whole Foods! We visited for the first time yesterday and were very impressed with everything the store carried and how fresh the meats, produce, and bakery were. But we were certainly sticker shocked by the prices of everything; more so the items we could get down the road at Publix or another grocery store a lot cheaper. They did carry a lot of local items which was very impressive and we did buy a few local items here, but for our regular groceries we decided to wait and go to a regular grocery store. The staff at this store were all very nice and would ask how we were and if there was anything they could help us with. I'll probably go back for fish and meat or bakery items, but not my regular grocery list. read more

This review will fluctuate as I spend more time here but after this first visit it's a solid 3-3.5. I misunderstood the whole concept so I was taken back when I saw a big display of Doritos and Reese's peanut butter cups. I didn't know it was a regular grocery store too. I thought it was all local and fresh prepared items. It's not. It's like the Harris Tetter with more local items. My first stop was the mix and match tomatoes. 5 star concept and tomatoes for sure! I got a handful of yellow, orange, cherry and baby heirlooms. All delicious. I grabbed a few more items from produce and made my way around the rest of the store. Since it was 8AM I didn't grab a beer to drink there. But I could have. And that's a cool concept. They did have one of my favorite Lagunitas beers Aunt Sally. So I was happy to see that. I grabbed a couple fresh rolls. The selection seemed small but it could have been bc it was so early and they didn't have it all stocked yet. I was surprised that there was only about 6 salads to order by the pound in the deli case. Mostly chicken salad. I wanted to see a ton more options. The salad bar is reasonable at $5.99 a pound but seemed limited. Plenty of different veggies but again only 4 prepare salads. Macaroni, two chicken salads and a grain and bean option. And the two chicken salads were missing spoons so I couldn't try either. They have an amazing selection of pimento cheese, mostly locally made options, but I just can't in good conscious spend over $6 on a tub of it. I make my own at home and really like it so I just can't do it! Now that I know what to expect and I've gotten set up with their rewards card, I'll be more prepared for my next trip. read more

I was excited when I heard that there was a new food store opening on Dorchester. Not that this area really needed another grocery store but some in the area have really disappointed me when it came to price and quality. So having another option appealed to me. I had never heard of or been to a Lowe's Food but was intrigued by the concept of having these "store fronts" within the store. Everything from Sausage Works where you can buy fresh ground and prepared sausages to Pick and Prep where you can cut your own herbs. They also have the Beer Den where you can shop and drink beer (or wine) while you shop. I've shopped there several times now and have tried many items they prepare there. Sausage Works makes delicious sausages and hand cut bacon. The Cakery and Loves Cookies makes amazing desserts. The Chicken Kitchen offers fresh rotisserie chicken and great chicken salad. And Boxcar Coffee can give Starbucks a run get their money. I also appreciate how clean and well kept they keep their salad bar. The biggest downfall is that it's located on the corner of Dorchester and Ladson so getting out of this shopping center is always a hassle. Other than that I happy to drive the extra mile to Lowe's Foods for better quality items and more local products. read more

Dry aged beef, sausage factory, chicken, bakery, beer den, wine, cheese, general grocery...huge selection with great quality and good prices. Lots of fresh produce and ready to eat food. My chicken pot pie was delish. I also really appreciate how they showcase local food and food products (and sell local shrimp - we really shouldn't be selling shrimp from anywhere else if you ask me). The staff couldn't be friendlier - there is certainly a culture of customer service there that is missing in so many other places. I am a fan for real!! I love the cut your own herbs. My husband hates when I bring the little plants home. He swears that smell the whole house. LOL! They have a great selection of wines too. They really had me sold when I seen that. There is a smokehouse section where they smoke lots of meats in house daily. It was a busy area too, so it must be a hit. I on the other hand was just in there for the break and bake cookies that I couldn't find anywhere. Lo and behold, they were there with some extras, so needless to say my trip was a success. I like that there is a calendar of events and how-to demos that they offer. I like that they recycle. It always hurts my feelings a little when I have to throw a plastic bottle in the trash. (For that reason, I end up keeping it with me until I get home.) If you are looking for pens and pencils, there isn't much selection, but they do have some for an arm and a leg. I guess its to teach you not to buy pencils from a grocery store. I will definitely be back to shop here on a pretty regular basis. I hate to say it, but I'm not impressed. It's a shiny, new store and it offers some great specialty items, but it just seems to me like a nicer version of a Bi-Lo. I had some coupons that I received in the mail, so I gave it a try. A lot of it is like a regular grocery store but with very high prices. I made sure to stick with the items that were on sale. I did get a loaf of the store brand bread - I have never had such awful bread. You couldn't even spread anything in it because it would just crumble into pieces. I also bought some apples - rotted within a couple days of me buying them. Never had that happen before. I also had a free coupon for coffee, a breadstick, a cake square, and a cookie. Coffee and cookie were good, but cake was dry and I had to throw the breadstick away after one bite because it tasted stale. I think that their wine selection was great but pricier than other stores, and their specialty items might be better, but I'm not sure if I want to find out. I do think it's great that they offer a craft beer selection that you can either buy a glass and drink while you shop, or take a growler home for later. read more

This is a great grocery store- it reminds of me of shopping at a village square. There are mini stores all around the j side of the store- wine shop, bakery, butcher, floral shop. This is definitely a different approach to grocery shopping. I also love how they have demonstrations and the option to by parts of produce. For example of you only need half a lemon, you can purchase just half! Great store, great product availability, my only complaint is it is more on the pricey side. The location for this store is very convenient and it is very easy to get in and out of and there seems to be plenty of parking available. This store is very well run and managed and is clean and well organized. The staff here is very helpful and will get you what you need if you need assistance. The worst service in deli of any grocery store in the entire world. One worker waiting on entire deli at both ends. 35 minute wait for 1 pound of $16 corned beef. This is a regular occurrence. They can say they have a worker shortage but Publix and Harris Teeter right up the road don't have that problem. read more

My wife and daughter had already been to Lowes Foods and told me I would be impressed when I finally check them out. It looks like a standard Grocery store on the outside but once inside you know you are in for something special. I noticed to the far right of the entrance is the draft beer area I had heard about. Since I was on a lunch break from work I didn't get to have a beer with my shopping but there is always next time. They do have a nice produce section with a really cool tomato bar. I noted their produce prices were comparable to the competition. I next checked out the meat section and did get a few unique items. The had a pretty good deal on ground Wagyu and ground Lamb which I hadn't even seen at other places in town. I got some of the tasty looking sausage from the cool sausage section too. I next found myself at the Bakery and wow was it nice. I knew what I wanted from the treats the girls had brought during their visit. The Olive and Sausage and Cheese bread were quickly added to the cart. On the suggestion of one of the employees I added the Asiago Cheese Focaccia which was delicious. I got the Pistachio and Apple muffins which were both very good. I also got the Butter Caramel Pecan Cookies which were to die for. The staff is very nice and extremely helpful. The inside is very nice and well organized. They have great deals everyday and have some very unique items you can't find anywhere else in Charleston. I was really excited for this grocery store to come to Summerville. There was a lot of hype about this store. The competition is Publix, Harris Teeter and Walmart. I have only shopped here a few times because I feel the prices are higher than other grocery stores. I do really like the beer bar (you can drink and shop) and the coffee shop. I would say they stand out above other grocery stores in the area in that aspect. They also have a gas station and you can use fuel points But I don't shop there enough to take advantage of that. We were happy to see an upscale grocery store in the Oakbrook area. The employees are helpful and seem to really like working at this store. The fresh herb that are available in the produce section are certainly fresh - you cut them yourself! Even an area of healthy dried seasoning to add to dressings and other specialty recipes. I enjoy the freshly made sandwiches and healthy drink selection in the grab n go section. Nice selection of gluten free options in the freezer section. I've not noticed this variety in any other store in Summerville. BBQ ribs or fried chicken to go makes rushed dinners easy. It's a treat to shop at Lowes Foods. read more

What a beautifully designed store! And delicious smelling supermarket. This place is like the Disney worlds of supermarkets. If you start at the far left side of the supermarket you can grab a coffee or beer and a pre-made sandwich so this way by the time you hit the BBQ station you don't go crazy buying delicious smoked, rubbed and or grilled items because you are going to want to buy it all that is how delicious it is presented and how delicious it all smells. The bakery section is just as beautiful as the bread station but for all you gluten-free people be warned.. they do not make fresh gluten-free bread or cakes which considering how perfectly well thought out this store is they managed to fail me in those two departments. I actually think there is still a better selection of gluten-free products in Whole Foods down in Mt. Pleasant. So at least for me I've still got to take a road trip from Summerville to Mt. Pleasant for my gluten-free food. read more

To know me is to know that I am slightly obsessed with grocery stores and grocery retailing in general. This place is close to my work, and the hype surrounding its opening was at fever pitch. I have been here no less than 6 times in the last month, and will be a regular. I'll list my thoughts from least favorite to most favorite. Parking - The Parking lot is a mess. The lanes appear too narrow, as do the spaces. I am hopeful that this is simply an appearance thing and not a design flaw as the lot has been jammed packed since its opening. PSST: If the weathers nice, park by the gas pumps and enjoy the walk to the store. :) No door dings there! Aisles - Here too, I am hoping that the Aisles are in fact not narrow, just overcrowded. That being said the width/length of the aisles seems disproportional, and may be thrown off by the height of the shelves. I think this is something that I could get used to, but certainly doesn't seem to be in the realm of standard grocery store convention. I can only imagine pushing a toddler in a cart through the aisles and them being able to reach both sides and pull/knock items off. Layout - The general layout of the store is great. intuitive. clean. nice flow. I felt like it was easy to learn where things were within two or three visits. Design - Store is well designed. Bright. I do enjoy the delightfully tacky displays at the bread, prepared food, and especially the sausage works! Beer - the addition of an on-site consumption license is pure genius. Why not enjoy a frosty beverage while deciding on the weeks meal plan? I am sure other grocers will follow, but this is a little slice of special for now. No whose ready to Uber home from the grocery store? Priceless! read more
