Long line on Friday at lunch time but worth the wait. Fried fish, Mac and cheese, and potatoes. The food was so fresh because they had a big crowd of people so they had to keep re filling the trays. The staff was very friendly and all of them had smiles, which is a great sign that they actually wanted to be there. So far, this is the only restaurant in SA we have really enjoyed. Man, what has happened to Luby's, they have not been able to keep pace with the changing tastes of the patrons. For years they have provided us veggies, comfort food, square fish, lu-ann platters and meeting rooms. The consistency of the food has spiraled down hill. It used to be that every Luby's was consistently good. Now they are only consistent at being inconsistent! I will return hoping that they will find that form again. And Yes Mom! I promise I will eat both a yellow and a green vegetable before I get a starch (mac & cheese). read more

We love this location, this and another location are our favorite, good food all the time, I use to get liver and onions for several years every time I visit but I was diagnosed with gout a few years back and liver is a gout food so I have to stay away from that for a bit eventho it's kinda hard for me....Lubys always good food for a fair price, I've dining at Lubys for over 25 years since I was 15 years old. read more

This review is not only for the N. Main establishment, but for all Luby's in general. Some Luby's are better than others. Why is that? When southside Luby's was open, they had the best enchiladas than any other Luby's locations. Square fish? I guess Luby's needs to mold the fish into something that will fit in a Luanne plate. It doesn't bother me because I think the fried fish is really good. I don't go to Luby's for the fish when SA has so many other great fish places (Rudy's, Sea Island, and Oscar's come to mind.). I will get it from time to time if I don't like the other selections. I like their soup and salad combo. Their salad is always fresh, and I love their Ranch dressing. I like their selection of bread. They have a lot of entree choices, but I usually stick to what I know and like. I usually get the baked chicken, which is really good. Their fried chicken is also good, and the pieces are huge, which makes me wonder if they buy their chickens from chicken farms that pump all kinds of hormones so that they can be nice and plump...no bueno. Now to the sides. Why does Luby's have to put FREAKIN BACON on everything? Also, why does Luby's have to put jalapenos in their Spanish rice? I've been making Spanish rice for years and years, and never have I added jalapenos. There is a variety of desserts, so no complaints in that department. The same with the drinks. Service. I liked it better when someone went around the cafeteria asking if people wanted a refill. You stand in line, sometimes a long line, get your food, but the wait staff expects a tip because they refilled your glass once or twice. I can see tipping if you have some kind of gathering in their establishment, but regular lunch/dinner, I don't think so. You shouldn't have to feel obligated to tip based on a drink refill. Eating lunch at Luby's on Main was terrible. They ran out of their special (pot pie) before 12:30. Then the chicken fried steak was really mostly chicken fried breading and AIR. Then, the lady who passes herself off as our "server" did absolutly nothing to provide service. We had to ask repeatedly for carry out boxes. Worst part is the HIGH PRICE!!! 12-14 for a self-serve, mediocre meal. Next time I'll find another downtown lunch spot. read more

I love Luby's but this location's drive thru is the worst! I've waited up to 30 minutes stuck in their line and not even at peak hours!

Every time I come to this lubys I get excellent service. I don't know if I just catch the waiters in a good mood but they always seem to give extra attention to make sure the whole table is satisfied. Even when the lines long it moves fast and the dining room is very spacious and clean.the price is reasonable for the portions. I usually get either the Angus beef or chicken fried chicken and am happy every time. read more

After being in line close to 15 minutes and paying for my order, I was just informed that the chicken I ordered and paid for was unavailable. I asked the cashier if the fish offered as an alternative had butter on it (the person I was ordering this for has dietary issues) and after she went and asked the manger she said it had mayonnaise. I decided I had wasted enough time and money since this was the SECOND time this had happened and asked for a refund because I didn't want anything from this place. Her reply was, "Just so you know, the chicken you had ordered has butter." Too bad that wasn't the issue! Then the manager came asking about the butter thing and I told him I wanted a refund because I was charged for something they didn't even have available. The first time this happened, I thought it was just a busy day, things happen, no big deal (even though it kind of is). After today, I will never go to a Luby's again! Ok...Jamie...I must admit, your review on this one just killed me...broke my heart a little if you will. Yes, some of their items may not be so great..i.e. square fish...but OMG girl...their Mac & Cheese is to die for. The one thing I love about them is their veg table selection. I love that they give you a choice of a "Veggie Plate" which is your call on 3 of their sides. I realize they give you alot of food, and it is HEAVY food....but mmmm..... To be honest, I'm not sure which location in SAT we actually went to... I'm not sure it matters. I wasn't expecting much and that's exactly what I got! Nothing but a heaping tray full of food I couldn't bring myself to eat. However, the salad was great. Fresh veggies, a good variety and nice selection of dressings. I should have stopped there. Really. The chicken fried steak made me wonder what Texans EVER saw in it, the gravy could have been replaced with a salt-lick, the potoatoes weren't warm and the broccoli was soaked in water. Out of all the Luby's restaurants I go to, this is the one I like. What I don't like is the service, which has been consistently low everytime I go. But I love their food. My favorite has to be blackened tilapia, side salad with thousand island dressing, fried fish, red/mashed potatoes, and broccoli with lots of cheese. It does get crowded during lunch and Sunday after church. The wait can be 20-30 minutes just to order food. read more

I have been going to Luby;s my entire life. I guess it is nostalgic for me. Luann platter with fried fish, Mac and cheese and green beans. Every time. I wish I knew how to make their tarter sauce bc it is the best. They used to have one on Broadway that we would go to every week, now dad and I go to the Main location and are just as happy. Their food is comforting to me. Sometimes, you have "one of those days" where you just need Luby's! It's hard to explain. Oh and if you are going to a dinner party and need to bring a dessert......get their cheesecake with graham cracker crust. Normally I go to lubys on SE military. But weather was bad and I know this location has a drive thru and a bigger to go area. First... No carrots .... Then no corn. Only corn on the cob. Then I notice the cranberry is out of a can. Not the fresh cranberries like at the other location. Only to get home to find out corn on the cob was raw. Had a horrible NEW YEARS DAY DINNER. Half went in the trash. Also dessert selection was not good at all. $15 dollar meal in the trash. Never will go to this location again. read more

You can not beat the food at Luby's. It is the best, freshest food around. However the Main location needs more or quicker bus boys. It was not that crowded and there were tons of dirty tables that needed to be bussed. I'm sure glad the health dept didn't visit that day. It looked really bad. Food is good but customer service is awful--they are very disorganized. BEWARE: If you call in order or order online, you will need to call to ensure your order is ready before you arrive. Three times in a row, my order was not ready. Today I ordered online, prepaid, and even received a text informing my my order was ready, but no one had even started working on my order. To boot, they substituted a veggie without my approval. Two previous times I called in my order and each time the order was not even started when I arrived; I was blithely told "I guess we lost your order". I am a manager myself so I understand human error, but three major glitches in a row tells you there is something seriously wrong with this organization if workers "lose" your order 3 times in a row. Service recovery was non-existent, the young male who gave me my order didn't even bother to say "Sorry for the inconvenience" or even a "Thank you" when he gave me my order. If this had been Bill Miller's I would have received some compensation (a piece of pie at least?) and they would have at least acted like they were sorry for my inconvenience. With such poor customer service, I now understand why Luby's is going under; the simple sad truth is that they just don't care. read more

I will start with the positive. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Some of the food was good. They were apparently training new line workers because when I asked what kind of fried fish it was I was told "fried" so I specified that I wanted to know if it was cod or a different kind she responded i don't know and looked at me like it shouldn't matter. I also had to wait at the entire section and again at the veggie section. They were not busy and several people looked at my waiting plate and me standing there and did not help me or try to get someone else in that section. The fried fish was mushy. read more

Luby's Cafeteria. Ahh, where do I begin? This is place that has many mixed reviews, ranging from hate to love and everything in between. Luby's opened their very first restaurant here in San Antonio in 1947 and they've been going strong ever since, so they've obviously been doing something right. And judging by their plethora of Cadillacs, Lincolns, and other various land yachts parked outside they seem to always have somebody in there enjoying their food. One of my early memories from childhood is going to Luby's to eat their Luanne platter of half a rectangle of fish, mashed potatoes with gravy and a roll. And of course, I had to pick the biggest dessert at the end of the line to round out the meal. As a kid, I loved the place! Who cared that fish isn't supposed to be square or rectangular? The fish I usually got was in fish-stick form, so this didn't bother me in the least. Now as an adult, I see that this is not the norm, but I can also see the odd draw that this place has over people. Heck, just looking at the average age of the people dining there is enough to make you feel like the youngest person in the room at times! And the taste of the food also certainly fits that demographic, being neither too spicy not too seasoned to be offensive to seniors or young children. I wouldn't necessarily label it as bland, but I would say it's just barely seasoned enough to be "safe" to the largest possible range of people who might dine there. And just the basic cafeteria style of getting your tray and picking what you want to eat by visually eyeballing the food harks back to my school days in the lunch room. Luby's was originally developed by a returning GI from WWII, so the process was also very familiar to other soldiers who were familiar to the chow line at that time. All these things touch something in us that perhaps harkens back to days gone by, so maybe that's why this place has a faithful following despite its "middle of the road" offerings. Perhaps too, that's why some people who either hated those days gone by or don't have that nostalgic feeling don't prefer this place. Really, it's an enigma that's hard to get your mind around as to how this business can survive for so long with so many other options to choose from. Over the years, I have tried many of their entrees': chicken fried steak, meatloaf, pot roast, baked fish, enchiladas, turkey, chopped steak, and various others. These all were so-so and really, depending on the location of the Luby's, were hit or miss. But the one thing that keeps me from giving this place a lower score, is that rectangular fried fish, mashed potatoes with gravy and dinner roll. Luby's has had my heart since my grandparents took me here at least twice a week when I was kid. I've been going to Lubys before I could walk. I remember the old twins they used to have at the Walzem location 18 years ago. I loved that they used to have the tea ladies come by and fill up your tea! It was great! These day's they have waiters which I'm not a fan of because you are suppose to tip. I got my own food and all you bring me is a straw "I'm not going to tip you for that". So I usually just get it Togo! Which means Kids meal here I come! They are the best! SERIOUSLY You get an entree plus two sides a roll, Jell-O, and a drink for $3.46. Did I mention this is home cooking? Oh it most certainly is! They food is always hot, fresh, and delicious! The drive thru could be a bit faster but I'm willing to wait for such great food with a great price. They also have dessert that are to die for.. Very disappointed in Luby's, we came in because they were advertising fish & shrimp. We get in line & they tell us no shrimp. One of us change to soup & salad (soup of days chicken noodle)... they're also out. No broccoli, no mashed potato... No coffee or ice for tea... so no food for half of us. I ate at the Luby's near Hwy 281 and I am still ill from the rancid grease they used to cook the fried fish. They do not use whole strawberries anymore on the shortcake. The quality has dropped substantially and the prices have doubled. They used to have good food but not anymore. I will not be foolish enough to eat there again! read more

Luby's is a cafeteria. It is the best I have ever experienced. Approach it with that expectation and you will not be disappointed. The San Antonio Luby's on N. Main is a former bank. It has a spacious 1960s quality. High ceiling, lots of wide open space, and walls of windows. It is one block north of downtown, easy to get to for visitors and locals. This is the company flagship. It has a drive-through window, a walk-in to-go counter, and the main food line and tables. The place is immaculate. I love the booths by the window. As to the food -- everything is excellent, although it does have a southern flair, i.e. fried okra and candied yams. My favorite is the fried fish. Yes, it does come as a crispy rectangle of flaky white fish but that crust is the reason I keep ordering it. For members of the meat cult, the roast beef, sliced while you watch, is the best I have ever tasted. Luby's will usually have pork chops, talapia, salmon, enchiladas, fried liver, etc. Yes, the fried liver with onions seems popular. For vegetarians there is a great salad counter at the front of the line and choices such as perfect green beans, broccoli (hold the cheese sauce), yams, etc. At the end of the line you'll find fresh rolls including whole wheat and corn bread and, finally, a variety of fresh pies, cakes, and cobbler. As to the wait staff, it's Texas. They work hard to be helpful and friendly. I never found them intrusive, especially when I needed fresh ice water. I live five blocks from this location. Luby's is where I go for comfort food. read more
