This is a very heartfelt reflection of Luby's, in particular, Antonio! My sister passed away and it wasn't until the day before her memorial service that I had remembered to order food for 30 people. I knew I wanted Luby's because it was my sister's favorite and we already knew how delicious the food is there. I called and spoke with Antonio. I asked him is there any way he could cater this event. And the first thing he said was, "I am so, so sorry for your loss, but I would not be able to cater or deliver in such short notice". But, he quickly added, that he could fix the food in bulk and someone would need to pick it up. So, I was thrilled and relieved that he said that. Especially since I had called the Luby's on Floyd Curl first, because it was closer to the event, and the man (unnamed), was curt and stated several reasons why he couldn't do it at all. He said the best he could do was make 30 individual plates and someone would need to pick them up. He was not even conciliatory with his reply. I felt defeated with his answer. Some people don't know what other people are going through or some just don't care. That's why when I called Antonio on Main Ave, I was so elated to hear that he was a man who demonstrated kindness, consideration, and was keenly aware of the situation. He told me not to worry that he would take care of everything and have it ready for pick up. He even asked me did I need serving utensils, which he provided, along with the large heating warmer to keep the food warm. Furthermore, he provided me with two free pies on behalf of Luby's. He displayed sincerity and comforting support during our entire exchange. When I saw him later, I just had to hug him. We need more Antonio's in this world! I will always come back to this particular Luby's because of the man that's in charge there....ANTONIO! God Bless you and thank you from the bottom of my heart! It really is good food from good people, Enchiladas, Chicken Fried Steak and our youngest granddaughter had the Chicken Tenders and she loved them. Carrot Cake is to die for, their Apple pie is up there too! The place is dated but, the quality of the food is what really matters. read more

Drive thru service is terrible. If you want to go you have 1. Call it into 2. Order from door dash. Staff was aggressive, and was trying to help another person behind me and basically pushing me out of the line while i was paying. Not a happy lunch time experience. Also will add another staff member pushed out the trays they scattered onto the floor and yelled at customers that she didnt hit them with it, although she didnt she didnt need to yell at anyone. This place is not gourmet by any standards; this a solid three star cafeteria food. The attentive staff, clean dining area, and the general holiday spirit during Thanksgiving bumps it up to 4 stars. This was the perfect place for bf, the kiddo, and I to be on Thanksgiving. We wanted a casual Thanksgiving meal that we didn't have to cook nor dress up for. Our wait was close to 30-45 minutes around dinner time, but that was expected. The staff was superb in keeping the line moving and dishing out the food. I caught a few glimpses into the kitchen and they were working furiously to send out trays and trays of food. Even as we were moving through the line, each staff member greeted us with a smile and warmth, even though they were away from their families for the holiday. The wait staff was kind enough to help carry our piled high trays when bf had to carry the toddler that finally zonked out during the wait in line. Surprisingly, it wasn't just turkey and the fixings offered during the dinner service. There was also fish, pork chops, and various cuts of beef (Texas, y'all) in addition to turkey. I was even able to keep up my healthy eating habits by having turkey only with sides of green beans and cabbage. There were plenty of pies and cheesecake for dessert. This wasn't the best-est Thanksgiving meal that I've ever tasted, but for the convenience and price point (I think it came to $30ish for both meals), this was a solid deal. We are extremely disappointed with (our) visit to Luby's for lunch after church. I order a Luann for lunch because it came with entree, two side and "bread", and so did my other family members. After, paying (we) noticed we had been charged $1.09 extra for the bread. I asked to speak with manager and informed her we had been charged $1.09 x3 for bread. The sign stated bread was included with meal/Luann. She stated it was because of an upgrade in bread select. Note: The sign does not say or explains what an upgrade is, the counter server did not mention there was an upgrade for certain breads, nor did the register clerk advised about an additional charge. There are no signs to advise the public there is an additional charge for certain breads when ordering a Luann. I believe this is unethical and deceiving when you offer bread with the Luann, and you choose the bread and then you are charged extra - Not Good. You SHOULD insert some verbiage in you sign. I thought I would login to reduce my rating, but then I discovered it was one star before and you can't get any lower. I went to Luby's on Main again. Supposedly this is where they train their managers. First the very short line was incredibly slow. Despite only winding one time around , it took 20 minutes to get through the line. At the cashier the elderly lady in front of me needed assistance, so the cashier rang the bell. One helper looked and walked away quickly hoping no one would notice. Another woman who was apparently bussing tables by herself quickly ran over, placed some of their dirty dishes she was carrying on to the elderly woman's tray next to her food, and went off in search of a clean table. There weren't many. While this was going on the cashier grabbed the trash can next to her and spit into it then wiped her mouth with her hand and said "excuse me.." really?!?! We went off in search of a table, and although the restaurant was less than half occupied, it was difficult to find a clean table as they were more tables awaiting busing then there were clean tables. When we finally found a table the entire time we were there not one person came by to say anything to us, and I had to get up to get my own refills. I looked about the floor and there were bits of food and paper scraps here and there throughout the dining area. I went to the restroom to wash my hands before eating in one of the sinks looked as if it had been vomited in and hastily washed out without a thorough cleaning. There were hand towels and toilet paper scattered throughout the restroom. The good news is my cheesesteak, sweet potatoes, and green beans tasted fine and did not make me sick. They can't handle the lunch rush. No one answers phones. They can't handle a drive thru of 5 cars, nor a walk in customer at the same time. Then if you're a walk in to go order, you still have to wait to even place the order after they have 3 cars go by. Organization of employees and tasks will handle that situation better. First of all: LOL@square fish! Second of all: uhh... ok, so I don't have a 'second of all'... (sorry, Kimmie, I must agree with Jamie on this one) I don't like Luby's either. The flavors are lacking and the cafeteria-style eating just doesn't do it for me. Sometimes the employees get impatient with you if you take a little longer trying to decide what you want. But I'll give it to them though: they certainly get their fair share of customers. And many of them very faithful. And it's the one place I've referred people to when they've looked for dining establishments that serve liver and onions. I think my favorite chef of all time, Chef Gordon Ramsay, would be offended by this place. Well, where do I start. I remember going to Luby's with my parents growing up in Murfreesboro, TN. I did not know it was based in Texas. I do remember it closed in the late 90s. I moved to San Antonio from NYC April of 2020 and driving here and there saw several locations and I kept thinking, I gotta go. Then labor day weekend, I see on the news they were closing and I was heartbroken. I always remember the food and service was always top notch. I went on 9/11 to get takeout on the way home from work. This location was closest to my apartment. When I got there the outside was the size of a factory and it was packed! I went in and the line stretched around almost twice but moved fast, the workers were pleasant and the food was delicious. I got liver and onions, with mashed potatoes and green beans, a roll and slice of cherry pie. It was scrumptious. Another thing for me, was the liver and onions. Another childhood memory. My Mom, who has since passed used to make it all the time for me. I loved it. I could never find it in the grocery stores in NYC or NJ to make myself so it had been over 20 years since I've had that dish. I am sad to see them go and hope to be able to go at least one more time before they close for good. I hope all those employees are able to find good jobs. read more

I'm calling my dinner yesterday at Luby's; "THE LAST SUPPER", why cause it was sad. I had the beef patty, steamed broccoli, corn-bread stuffing, and jalapeno cornbread. The best idem was the jalapeno corn bread. Why, the food was so sad cause it showed no effort to make the food taste good in any way. It was like the perp cooks are given two pictures of the food; the raw picture and the finished picture, and their job is to make it look like the finish picture. My beef patty had no seasoning in any way, and it didn't hold it's shape, meaning zero effort in prepping the beef patty in seasoning and packing the meat in shaping it. The broccoli was steamed good, wasn't over steamed or mushy, but the zero lack of effort it showed in cutting the broccoli and seasoning. The broccoli had the "butt and the stem" when those should be cut off during prep and only the "buds of the broccoli" is to be served. The stuffing was the worst it was flavorless and soggy, which means no effort in prep to read or follow directions from a box of just add water and obviously, no skills in measurements. And three for three on the none seasoning department, the stuffing tasted like wet bread. Does Luby's have salt and pepper for their prep cooks or just for customers. read more

Occasionally, my office will order from here for lunch. Apparently, in a downtown full of fast food options, we're not the only ones who pick Luby's to scratch our itch, as there was also a "takeout" order for 25 people the last time we went by. That's a little excessive, but for our office, this place does well. The location is good, right off of the highway, and the staff is efficient at their jobs- quick to plate and pack orders, thorough at including additional condiments and napkins, and friendly. While this review is primarily about take-out service, I have dined in at this particular location before. Like many, I don't like the staff "servers" that monitor the dining room and expect tips for mundane tasks- while I'm sure this was a well-intentioned idea put in place for their target audience of octogenarians who might run into health risks while getting up to grab more Sweet N Low, the majority of customers don't need or like this service. read more

I've been coming here ever since i was in junior high and always enjoy the food and service at this location. The lunch rush isn't horrible either. Takes a bit longer, but you'll get in and out with time plenty of time if you have an hour. Get it to go if you only have 30 mins. Dining room in enormous and parking isn't a problem here. What can you possibly say about SQUARE FISH? Well first off, its square and comes fried, baked or almondine. It tastes like cardboard with a hint of tarter sauce. Your choice of sides is plentiful if you like starches, creamed, smothered, or mashed and creamed. They even ruined perfectly fresh squash with....you guessed it CREAM! They have mashed potato's with gravy...country cream gravy, cream corn, green-bean casserole, ahhhhhhhhhhh. ENOUGH ALREADY! Luby's is a prime example why Texas is fat. All the Pilate's in the world will not work off 1 lunch at Luby's. Unfortunately my local AIA chapter holds its monthly luncheon here and every time I feel full and gross. I swear it takes me weeks to recover from eating there. And its not like you have a choice...they just give you the food. The only reason they get an extra star is because they make good pecan pie....not even great pie, just good! And $15 just makes me want to die! read more

For dinner I ordered Meatloaf, Mashed Potatoes and Squash. The meal was predictably good but the service at this location was exceptional. I noticed employees being conversational with all their guests while still replenishing drinks and getting additional items customers ordered. My last visit: I was intrigued by the sign outside which said there are 2 new vegetable dishes available - carrots and squash noodles. I stood in line 30 minutes. When I was close enough to ask about them (because I didn't see them), the asst. mgr. at first didn't know about them or about the sign outside. Finally he found out and pointed them out. The carrots were actually half potatoes. But the clincher is that each item cost $1.50 in addition to the regular price. That would have been $3 extra for vegetables. All the other options were the same tired veggies they have served for years. I've been going to Luby's for almost my entire life. So sad this will be the last visit. read more

Just had lunch here and I gotta say their baked chicken is great. I've had it several times now and it is perfectly seasoned and baked every time. Really good! I also had cauliflower with some cheese on it and fresh sautéed green beans and both of those were excellent. A healthy meal and it was just over $10. A fast food, greasy burger is almost that much. I'm a big fan of Luby's and will be eating lunch here often for great, healthy food at an extremely reasonable price. read more

So I am not a native San Antonian, but if you ask anyone who has grown up here, most people have fond memories of Luby's and the food there. Initially I was not a fan, as it is pretty basic food served cafeteria style. But over the years, I have come to appreciate the consistency and the almost home cooked taste of the food. I usually order a Luann special, which is half an entree with two sides, then I add a biscuit or corn bread. I like the roasted chicken and the chopped steak, when I am craving some protein. The set up makes it very easy to pick what you want and the line usually moves pretty smoothly unless you get stuck behind a newbie or someone who can't make up their mind. But, usually the Luby's crowd knows what they are going in for. This location has an especially friendly, San Antonio vibe. The staff is fast, friendly and efficient. They provide great customer service and know how to work with a crowd. I make sure to leave a tip, to show my appreciation for their work great service. read more

I'm from the Northeast so its been a while since I've been to Luby's. From the other reviews, you'd think it was horrible. I'm not sure about that. I don't know if I was there on a good day, but my food was pretty good. For the newcomers, it's a cafeteria style restaurant that serves southern style comfort food with a very extensive menu. Everything from chicken fried steak to baked fish to meatloaf. They really have everything. And the sides are great too. I love the concept. If you're looking to eat healthy, they have some low cal options. To be honest though, you don't really come here to eat healthy. The menu can be pretty overwhelming. You can always go online to take a look at the options. Definitely a place to try if you've never been there. read more

Had lunch here the other day and it was great. The fried fish was fresh and mild and the crust was crunchy and flavorful. My sides were black eyed peas and sautéed squash and both of those were great also. I love being able to get some vegetables with lunch and the whole meal was just over $10. I normally LOVE Luby's! And so does my Fiancé. However we came in today during the pandemic, trying to support Buisness during this tuff time, and I was approached with attitude from an Adalia (not sure I spelled it right) working the serving in the kitchen. I just had surgery on my teeth, and with the mask it's hard to talk and I can't eat solid food. When I asked if they have soup she said, "yes" and pointed to a pot of soup and then pointed to the salad bar and said "we have gumbo". I then asked what the other soup was since I assumed the gumbo soup was at the salad bar I had already passed. She then urged "we only have one soup" at this point she was clearly annoyed. I then proceeded to just move my mask and told her I'd just get 3 sides. Then as I moved down the line I noticed there was no Jello, which is why I came here since my mouth hurts. I was clearly not happy and a manager, I presume, came over and with attitude asked what was wrong, when I told her she said "all you have to do is ask and someone will get it for you", first of all ma'am, I am a customer. I may look young but as a manager if I saw a customer unhappy I would NOT approach them with a hostel attitude. On top of allll this, they where out of ketchup in the whole restaurant. My fiancé had to eat his fish dry, the managers couldn't have written a note to tape on the door that says "no ketchup if you want some bring your own" but no effort is made at all. I spoke with the staff on the floor and heard employees all in agreement that the management needs serious reconstruction! From the way they train staff to their customer edict. (P.s. I have been sitting in the drive thru at this location for 40 minutes. There were 4 cars ahead of me.... Still not to the window!!!!! This is ridiculous. People are on their lunch hour, there must be a better way to service your drive thru! In addition, once I got to the window I was informed that they were out of both baked chicken and broccoli, 2 of the three items I ordered. If you like rude service and bland food then this is the place for you. We used to be regulars at Luby's but we have noticed a decline in service and taste. Today's trip will be our last. We decided to get food to go do at 1pm we got in line in the drive thru. 15 minutes later we were still in the same spot so we got down and used the walk up to go counter. It was just as slow as the drive thru and EVERY worker we came in contact with was rude. They acted like we were bothering them by ordering. Lubys is still great when you want basic food! It was a welcome treat after church Sunday! Our salads were fresh and very crisp, and All of our entrees were hot and moist. Even though I didn't get to taste any of the desserts, my daughter expressed her joy with the carrot cake which she completed. Have been Luby's customer many years. Today at the north main location during lunch hour we arrived hungry and ready to fill our appetites. We noticed they were using different food trays containing the variety of selections. No longer the steam deep trays but silver square trays sitting under the hot lights. We all ordered the liver and onions and of course the side dishes. On arriving at our table to eat sadly the food was all barely warm and liver very very dry. We have a short clock to eat so we just finished and left. Not the Luby's of past years when you could expect Hot dishes and food worth your hard earned money. Just got done eating at this location and I have to say I was more then pleased with the experience at this location. Incredible service. We came with a big party on New Years after receiving poor service from Lulu's across the street. Glad we switched and came to luby's instead.
