8/15/2026: Good lunch spot with a surprisingly wide menu--and super convenient if you're catching a movie at the Regal on Silber right across the highway! The interior is pretty unassuming and on the smaller side, offering a mix of half-booths, bar top seating, standard tables, plus a small outdoor area by the entrance. Right when you walk in, there are coolers stocked with cakes and bottled drinks, and the counter features a nice spread of bakery items like cupcakes, cookies, and muffins. It is a walk-up counter order setup--they bring the food out to your table, but you retrieve your own drinks and silverware. I'm personally not a big fan of walk-up ordering (meh #1), and the dining room felt like it could use a little TLC (meh #2), but overall the food made up for it. Fried Green Tomato BLT: Served on a pretzel bun with bacon, aioli sauce, and leaf lettuce (which I substituted for shredded lettuce). It comes stacked with two layers of fried green tomatoes--I ended up taking one layer off, but the flavors were solid, especially the bacon and aioli. Sides: The fries and coleslaw were both very good. We drive past this restaurant everytime we go to Walmart which is accross the street. My wife finally convinced me and we went for a late lunch, 245pm and it was empty. We were greeted and given menus. My wife likes Reuben sandwiches and I love and scour the planet for hamburgers. My wife ordered the Reuben and Rebecca with chips and pickles. She absolutely loved it and said it was the best Reuben since we left NYC 20 years ago. Like I said I am a hamburger aficianado. I will always take a burger over a steak. (not my wife, who thinks that is sacriligious). My bad was that I stopped reading when I read Cowboy Meal which was listed as a burger. It was an AWESOME looking plate and worth just looking at it BUT it was not a burger: it was a salisbury steak!!! I almost cried! On the plus side is that it had a lot of bacon!!! Was it tasty? Meh. I had the pleasure of stopping by Salt and Sugar in Houston thanks to my family placing an order last minute after running some errands . I walked in and remembered I came to Salt & Sugar like a year ago! The order I picked up: Fish and chips with a side of Tatar sauce and balsamic vinaigrette garden salad. Four cookies: oatmeal, carrot, s'mores, and peanut butter. (I was coerced into getting them by Lonzo lol) Mannn let me tell you the fish was incredibly fresh, with a crispy, golden coating (beer batter) that didn't overpower the flavor. Cod fish btw. The fish and chips was accompanied by their house-made tartar sauce, which was creamy, tangy, and clearly made with care. The salad came with a light vinaigrette that paired perfectly with the meal. Customer service was on point. Lonzo really made the experience memorable with his warm attitude and attention to detail. I didn't plan on getting dessert, but thanks to his great service, I walked out with four cookies. Each one had its own charm, but the carrot and s'mores stood out; rich, chewy, and clearly baked fresh. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, a nice little spot that feels both relaxed and welcoming. I wanted a pork chop or steak and saw this place and their pork chop. It looked great online. When I get there I ate at the bar. It was a coffee bar. Again- I should have done more research. So I was given a menu then I ordered the pork shop. And then the waiter said is that I and proceeded to give me my total. Another thing I have researched. It's counter service. Then I said I just wanted water. I waited for it and he said we have to help ourselves to drinks (later). So ok. Fine. Then later he told me they were out of pork chops. So I got the short ribs with the grits. The ribs were tender. They were tasty. The grits were good. The veg was good as well. I'd give the food a 4 but I would think, since they make their own pastries, they would make a bread to serve with dinner! But no bread so that drops it down a point or 2. I had ordered (pre-paid) for the bread pudding. It was good, legit bread pudding. The place itself is a coffee bar so it looks and acts like a coffee bar. Now to the coffee bar. Someone there ordered and espresso drink. They don't have a knock box and so he proceeded to knock out the very old puck into a trash can under the sink then rinsed it. Then the shot glass looked like it had been there unrinsed from the morning. Then as he proceeded to make the espresso- he had to fill the espresso machine (with tap water). Last- it was Aerosmith on repeat. I like them as much as the next guy, but how about some variety. I guess if I lived in the area I might go back to try their breakfast. Service was good, and knowledgeable about the menu. So far I've had the fish and chips, and Gringo Cubano. Both were excellent, but the Cubano was definitely a stand-out. I'll be ordering that one again soon! Bakery items are mostly pastries and cookies at the front of the house. I really like the gingersnap and coconut chew. Salt & Sugar is a must-try! The owner, Sally, is a gem and the staff are all super friendly! I came in with a huge group and they had already pushed together tables for us. The dining room was perfect. We ordered everything at the counter and they brought our food to us. The unanimous opinion: everything was wonderful!! I'm a sucker for a Reuben sandwich and this one was great. A little bit of a twist, but I enjoyed it. A few notable choices were the fish and chips, truffle egg salad, the fried green tomato blt, and the pork chop. The only downside to ordering the pork chop is that it takes about 30 minutes to cook. If you're ok waiting, it's a no-brainer to try! Everyone who got fries said they were delicious and many of us got dessert to-go. I can't wait to bring back my family to try more of their menu. I decided to bring a group here for a 2024 Houston Restaurant Weeks dinner because I heard good things about Salt & Sugar. Some things here surprised me but the food was really good. Parking space is limited in front of the restaurant and that was all I could see. Inside it's half bakery/dessert shoppe and half restaurant. Finally you order and pay at the counter and then they bring the food to your table. From the HRW menu it was a 3 course affair for $39 and I started with the monkey bread, then the bourbon maple pork chop for the main and to finish the peach cobbler tart. A nice extra with this HRW menu is that the price included a glass of wine or beer from the menu. I went with the red blend. Our first courses arrived about 10 minutes later. My bread was in a cup and overflowed it consisting of about 5 large pieces when broken up. It was warm and fluffy and I could taste the rosemary and salt in that pillow of pure deliciousness. With some supplied honey butter, this bread was amazing. I couldn't get enough of it but fortunately there was plenty of it. I was the only one that ordered it and had to yell a couple of times, "don't touch my monkey bread"! Later the pork chop arrived with green beans and mashed potatoes. The 14 oz. chop was almost boneless meaning it was a lot of meat. The combination of the apple chutney on top and the maple/onion sauce used to cook the chop made this pork chop a pleasure to eat. Very flavorful and tender! The green beans were good and slightly crunchy. The mashed potatoes were outstanding. While it had soft potato chunks in a buttery and creamy sauce, I found this combination to be perfect. It was oh so smooth and satisfying to eat. This is my favorite mashed potatoes with no gravy needed or wanted. Finally the peach cobbler tart showed up with a scoop of vanilla in the center with a blueberry on top for a splash of color and taste. With Salt & Sugar being half bakery I expected this to be good and it was. The peaches, pastry and ice cream were all delicious and devoured with a spoon as it should be. After this meal, I felt stuffed. After this meal, I felt satisfied. After this meal, I wondered whether to rate it a 4 or a 5. Everything exceeded my expectations and for $39 (with a glass of wine) also made it a real value in my mind. From a HRW perspective, this was a 5 meal. Quality and price made that an easy decision. Since I tried to order some selections from the regular menu like the bread and chop, I believe that the food here is excellent whether it's for HRW or just a meal anytime. Scallion schmear, chicken sausage, and gouda grits a la cart, they also have juices. I got the green one with cactus. It was good! Second time attempting Salt and Sugar. I was really wanting a bagel sandwich. I was daydreaming of it before getting there. Once we got there I don't know what happened honestly. I ordered it with the bacon and bacon jalepeno jam. I love sweet and spicy. Well honestly even forgot the jalepeno was even supposed to be there with how not-spicy it was. The bagel was disappointing which shocked me since there are multiple signs saying there was supposed to be brazos bagel which I have had previously. I honestly felt that the bagel I got today was more of a random grocery store bagel than the freshness I've had from Brazos. My husband ordered the other breakfast sandwich option which came with the wrong meat which they corrected and was supposed to have other items on the sandwich but honestly the girl working looked confused when I mentioned it was supposed to have arugula on it. Overall I was disappointed with the bagel along with their inability to cook the eggs more than over easy. Also please note that NOTHING we purchased was as advertised price. Decided to try this place on a Saturday afternoon, there's parking out front and there was no wait. Staff were friendly and helpful. We had ordered 2 desserts, a lemon meringue cheesecake and a chocolate eclair. The chocolate eclair had a strange tangy flavor to it like vinegar, the manager was very accommodating and let us pick out a different dessert. We picked out the fruit tart, both desserts were decadent smooth creamy sweetness. For our meal we ordered 3 breakfast tacos with egg bacon and cheese and potato, the boyfriend said the tacos were really good. I had the Parisian breakfast which included 2 eggs, brie with lime honey,a loaf of French bread, a buttered croissant, creamy butter and jam, and a cup of fruit, ooh la la I felt like I was in Paris. We went for lunch on a Monday. The classic burger was good but wasn't my favorite since I prefer more of a crumble patty. I love the fries though! The biscuits and gravy was good, although next time we will try it with the sausage instead of the fried chicken. The portions are large, we took home half of our meals. I had tha American breakfast and it by far exceeded my expectations. The scrambled eggs were perfectly cooked. Fluffy and delicious. The bacon was crispy and the hash browns were good and plentiful. The biscuit and gravy was the best I've ever had. Biscuit was fluffy and delicious. Not dry at all. Gravy was the perfect consistency. Usually you go to places and the gravy is either too thick or too runny but this one is just right and the pieces of sausage in it were absolutely the best! The coffee was delicious. The service was friendly and efficient. The atmosphere was like an urban diner. Really cool artwork on the walls inside and out. Such nice people and clean restaurants. My best friend and I have been regulars at Salt & Sugar for over three years now, dating back to when it was still known as The World Catering Bakery. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, you can find us here after our morning gym session, sipping excellent coffee, immersed in chess games and conversation. When our previous coffee spot closed its doors, we wandered from café to café around town--some good, some disappointing--until we finally discovered Salt & Sugar. Even though nearly everything else shifted when the bakery changed hands (the menu, prices, and overall vibe), the one constant has always been the genuinely warm people and their exceptional service. I'll let others rave about the delicious pastries, eggs, and bacon (though they certainly deserve the praise!), because for me, it's the welcoming faces behind the counter and the reliably rich, full-bodied Katz Coffee that keep me coming back week after week. We tried the Steak and Frites from the "new menu," and the steak was tough and disappointing--definitely the worst meat we've ever had. The plate was overloaded with fries, which felt excessive. I also ordered a salad with grilled chicken, but the greens were wilted and clearly not fresh. Lastly, while waiting for the food, I saw someone return a dessert because it was spoiled. I was done at that point. If you're looking for coffee, cookies, or dessert, this place might be okay, but the food quality was lacking. The service wasn't particularly friendly or attentive either. the online menu for S&S shows appetizer portion of eggplant parm in a ramekin and eaten with a spoon, What? I asked the server ( a pertty young girl with a butterfly on her nose.Henceforth, TS) to give it to me in a different plate so i could use a knife and fork. Instead of her saying that she would ask the kitchen, she gave me a lecture on how that was how they did it. Never, ever, have I experienced that kind of reply. There was only one other person in the restaurant and TS spent a long time talking with her. Later that person stopped at our table and told me she heard our conversation (doubtful at the distance) and that if i didn't like how they did things I should eat at home.!! TS waived at her and was putting her hands together and bowing by way of thanking her. I'v e no doubt that the rude lady had acted on behalf of TS. This place shows a lot of promise. On the pastry side of the house, the sweets and treats are quite incredible. We got a wonderful chocolate cake for our friend's birthday. The cake was $35 (honestly, underpriced). On the other hand, they are lacking when it comes to being a true bakery. The bagels they sell are akin to Lenders or worse. $4 for a single tiny bagel, plain, not toasted, nothing on it, just straight in the bag. $12 for three bagels. A half dozen quality bagels from a real bagel shop are $8.50. Or $1.50 for a single. A lot of promise but if they don't get their act together, focus on a consistent level of quality across their products, they will struggle. It's new management, no doubt they are still sorting the kinks but they need to fix their offerings quality and prices to the market, both where they undervalue their products and where they overprice others, as well as work on training for counter for counter staff.
