My cousin and I make it a habit to dine at Luby's whenever I'm in town, and this was no exception. We decided to go to this particular location because it was newer and promised to be better than the location near our Grandmas house in Balcones Heights. Boy, were we mistaken! Walking in, it was your typical set up: cafeteria style dining, grab a tray, get in line. I ordered what I've ordered since I was a child living in Texas, Lu-Ann fish with fried okra and macaroni and cheese. (can you guess I was a fat kid growing up in Texas?). My cousin ordered a healthier version of my plate with Grilled fish, spinach and macaroni and cheese. By the time we grabbed a dinner roll, our drinks and paid, our food was ice cold. I was surprised because we were in line all of about 5 minutes, which means we were given luke warm meals, if even that, to begin with. We sat down, and decided this was unacceptable and asked to have our dinners reheated. One of the gentleman working the dining room, happily, and apologetically took our food back and reheated our dishes, no problems. When we got our food back, mine was piping hot, but my cousins was still a bit cold for her liking. So, we asked another server to help us out and he rolled his eyes and sighed as if we were bothering him. Third time was a charm for my cousin, as her food was finally hot enough to eat. I was disappointed with my meal as a whole. My fish was dry, although, if you see the picture I posted, they gave me enough tarter sauce to completely submerge my fish. The okra was good and the mac and cheese, too, was tasty. I suppose the combination of the two made up for the uneatable fish. All in all, I've experienced better at other locations, and even though this is basically the equivalent of eating at a high school cafeteria, it's a childhood memory I'm not ready to give up. First time ever coming to Luby's was a few weeks back when we went for the all-you-can-eat breakfast! I was super excited to try it after hearing from friends how great it was and seeing it advertised on TV. I got there pretty early (fatal mistake) around 9AM, the all you can eat brkfst runs from 8AM-10AM I believe. I walked in to Luby's (first time ever eating here) and I really wasn't sure what to do. There wasn't anyone in front of me so I just kind of stood there waiting to be helped. I seriously thought maybe it was where you served yourself and sat down like at most original buffets, but that's not what Luby's is like! The servers behind the glass get the food for you which I really didn't like. I found it kind of awkward directing them which food I wanted, plus I didn't really have much time to look over the buffet to see what there was but I figured, I'd come back up again after I had my first plate. We checked out and the price was considerably more than what I thought it would be but didn't think twice about it. Figured the drinks were expensive or something, so we just sat down. The food was definitely not something fantastic! The pancakes were really hard and rubber-like, which made me turned off from the beginning. The eggs and bacon were just like cold - it was weird. The only thing I genuinely enjoyed was the coffee which was piping hot and strong, just how I like it. The place was extremely dead. Only ONE other person in there at the time we went which I was surprised. I figured it'd be full that early in the morning. Anyways, we went up again to get a second plate and the lady told us that we had to pay for an all-new plate because we didn't purchase the all-you-can-eat. I just thought it was a bit strange since they advertise it, I figured that's what everyone would get automatically as you enter. But I guess not! Totally not paying another $8 for a crappy plate of flood. Went elsewhere and haven't been back since. I wouldn't recommend for breakfast, maybe it's better throughout the day, but not at breakfast time! read more

So many entrees, sides and desserts to choose from! Even when the line is long to get your food it goes by quick so you hardly notice. Luby's tea has always been fresh and consistently amazing I could drink a gallon of that liquid. Portions are just right where you finish your whole meal and have nothing left to take home. Stand out fare is the fried fish, chop steak, chicken fried chicken and chicken fried steak. You also can't go wrong with their famous liver and onions, that's right liver and onions please try it if you haven't. The sides to try are the Mac n cheese, spinach, green beans and fried okra. The cheese cake is also a nice decadent treat to finish off your meal. read more

If you need some home-style American cooking, Luby's is great for the price. For $10, you can get an entree and two sides! The portions are a pretty good size as well. I ordered the fried fish, mac and cheese, and broccoli; I was unable to finish all of it at lunchtime. I've actually never had anything bad at Luby's, but I do have a couple of friends who don't like Luby's (which I don't know why). If you've never been, it's a cafeteria-style set up. You get a tray, go down the line, and tell the people behind the counter what you want. At the end of the line, the cashier will ask how many trays you're paying for and will charge accordingly. There's not really any waitress service, but someone does walk around, refills your drinks, and buses your table. I definitely like Luby's more than Kelley's (Houston area chain). The food tends to taste fresher. You can also find a coupon sometimes in your weekly coupon circular mailed to your house, so you can save even more money! read more

My kids love coming here especially the jello. I like the turkey with dressing and mash potatoes with friend Okra. Jalapeno corn bread is my favorite.I use the take out window a lot and always fast. Waitstaff is helpful with kids trays and drinks. read more

Why in Sam Hell does it take 45 minutes to get through a Luby's drive through with only two cars infront of me. Seriously, the food is already cooked. ALL they have to do is put it in the Styrofoam container, forget the utinsils, not apologize that I could have eaten lunch at Morton's in the time it took to get my food, and charge me way too much for mediocre food. And I love the curb on both sides so you're stick in line and can't drive off. Luby's is officially off my places to eat list. read more

I've been coming to Luby's for over 12 years the better part of my life. One of my favorite Luby's locations mainly because there's always plenty of food and it doesn't tend to get too busy during the times that I go. It seems every time I get I come here they are just unloading a fresh new batch of the chicken fried chicken and macaroni which on my favorite dishes. Since I was a kid I've always had the mac & cheese and it still taste as good as it did back then if not better. AlsoI greatly enjoy the fact that their broccoli and other vegetables are always steamed and cooked with very little butter and salt so that way they can taste fresh and crisp, which is not only the healthiest way to eat them but also the best. As for service I've never encountered any sort of issue the waitress always comes by brings me straws lemons and other things I may ask for even refills my drinks occasionally. But what I did notice on my most recent visit was that they no longer allow you to choose a tip on your bill which for someone like me who never carries cash is a major drawback. read more

Stars are for the drive thru and food we ordered. Person taking our order was very polite and quick with our food. We had our usual fish and 2 sides. Order was correct when we got home to eat. We like to throw the dice and don't check our meal till we get home. Everything cooked good along with our desserts. Strawberry shortcake gets MVP every time. My wife's yella cake was good too. Only reason not to give it 5 staros cause we didn't go inside to eat. Our experience was pleasant. read more

I've dined there out of convenience of the location but the North Star location is way better. I've been a few times and the person at the end computing the receipt must be on slow mode. By the time I sit down to enjoy my meal, it is barely warm. On there marquee, it states they are hiring and I hope they do that ASAP. As a kid, the only thing that would get me through a doctor's appointment was the promise of going to Luby's. The favorite dish back then was fried fish, mac and cheese and fried okra. To this day that is still the go to meal and it still tastes the same as it did years ago: delicious. The staff is always accommodating: they now have waitresses so you do have to tip but they will do as you ask so it's okay. Also your line workers (is that what they're called?) are very friendly; everyone there is. The price is just about right (assuming you skip the dessert which is always difficult to do when it's right in front of you!) Go for the LuAnn plate instead of the combo; you get slightly less for cheaper. It's in the medical center so it will be crowded at peak meal times but the line is always moving and takes no time at all. Overall, you can enjoy your meal after your next appointment in the medical center! read more

I hadn't gone to Luby's since I was a child. It had been a good 10 years since my last visit. I can't say that I was impressed. The food at this location is warm which, sadly to say, is better than a lot of other locations. I have tried their baked fish twice and both times it was loaded down with heavy white mayonnaise topping. Their macaroni lives up to true Luby's standard thus making it wonderful. The Strawberry Shortcake is good as well. It is two layers or spongecake with cream and strawberry glaze. The glaze is a little generic and obviously thawed, but I would not expect more from a Luby's. The service is also not very good. Long ago are the times with the tea lady walking around with her cart. Now a manager comes every thirty minutes to check on you. So if you are out of drink before then it's best to get up for a refill. Also there aren't clear specification listed as to what a Lu Ann Platter entails. The first visit cost me about $20 for one plate! On the second visit I asked again and this time I was only charged $11. If you want food slightly better than buffet quality Luby's is a good option. read more

I am a Texas transplant and this was my first Luby's experience. I went in expecting cafeteria food and I got it. I actually had a lovely piece of fish after I scraped some kind of sauce off of it. The side salad was large with many toppings choices. The roll was very good, light crust and very fluffy inside. A very clean restaurant, very attentive staff. Great value comfort food. read more

Oh my... how do you get out of Luby's without 2 trays? I am not from Texas and haven't had many chances to eat at cafeterias in my time, Luby's, however, is a treat that everyone must experience! The line moves quickly and there are many choices... but my favorite is the Chicken Fried Steak. The Fried Fish also looked very tasty. The side salads, potatoes, mac and cheese,... all look SO tempting. The service staff was very nice and eager to keep the line moving... hence my inability to truly decide and clearly I selected WAY too much food. When I think of Luby's, I think of going to mass with my grandparents. I remember never getting enough macaroni and cheese. Well that definitely was not the case at this location. I got enough mac and cheese to completely satisfy myself. The service was amazing as well. Before I had even finished half of my tea, they had already brought me another glass. The drive thru is usually extremely slow. I would recommend going inside if you're simply picking up a side and asking for a box, it will be much faster. I find it is rather expensive to dine in and the food isn't really worth the price. Two meals with a desert and drinks can easily come out to $40. Other than the price, which is out of their control, this place is a decent place to get a bite. read more

On 10/24/18 I visited Lubys in San Antonio TX medical center location on Floyd Curl. I left my to go order completley untouched on a display table while gathering my children and belongings when leaving Lubys; after my children ate their food. I wanted mine to go. After realizing I left my food at the restaurant the location had already closed. I called the restaurant today 10/25/18 to inquire if I could redeem my forgotten food for a fresh plate.. I spoke with the manager Paul Swartz who did not attempt to validate my experience or research the incident. He didn't even try and understand that I wasted my money and left my food. I feel the manager could have at least asked the wait staff if anyone remembers what happened... I often go to this location because it is very close to my house... I was told by the manager that it's not his fault I left my food; however I considered Lubys to be a family friendly cornerstone of the San Antonio community and just simply expected some type of empathy about 1 fish plate I forgot.... the manager was not kind about the situation and I am upset because I come to this location at least once a week. My daughter even celebrated her 9th birthday here with my entire family. The fish plate doesn't bother me it's the princicple that the manager did not take the time to verify the situation and made me feel as if I he was better than me becuause I asked to be redeemed... My husband and I have loved Luby's for years, so we decided to give this one a try. It lived up to what we remembered and more. We both had the fried fish, which was amazing. I also had my usual choices of very cooked green beans, macaroni and cheese, tossed salad with French dressing, and cherry pie. My husband enjoyed the sides of green beans al dente, pasta salad, and a roll with butter. We both had their good ice tea. We were in heaven, and ate until we thought we would pass out - it was so good. The cost of both our meals was around $30, which was so reasonable for an excellent lunch these days. I have been coming to this Luby's in my 27 years of living in the medical center area. I remember it being very busy and crowded everyday. Now it is empty and quiet. I came this evening for dinner and I left very disappointed with the quality of food and the horrible service we received. I ordered the blackened tilapia combo with a side salad and broccoli and cheese. My mother ordered the fried fish combo. When she ordered the fried fish the cook said it would take about 4 minutes to come in. They were wrong. When we sat down to eat, we noticed there were only 2 waitresses on standby to serve the customers. We tried getting their attention but it was tough being that it was dinner time and families were being seated. It took another 5-10 minutes for my mothers to get her fish she almost finished her sides! The blackened tilapia was overlooked and burned. We hardly saw our waitress during our experience here. Overall the food was good, but the service is definitely not the best. It felt as if you get treated different just because you're not part of the older crowd and you think since were younger we won't tip good. When my significant other and myself went to have dinner, the waitress barely came to our table and when she did she wasn't very cheerful. My wife and I went to eat today. $22 work of really great looking food. We ate our salad and then went to 2nd course. A roach dropped down from the TV and landed on my wife's plate, we could see more behind the TV. She jumped up and we told the waiter who alerted the manager. He only said sorry. We didn't even get to touch the rest of our food and were sick to our stomachs. Only thought running through our heads were how many more roaches were in the kitchen walking all over the food. This Luby's is the absolute WORST when it comes to pickup & drive thru. They don't acknowledge the costumers and when they do, they are upright rude about it. No smiles AT ALL. I work right near the area so it's convenient but I ALWAYS dread picking up. Foods good but the pick up & drive thru staff are horrible. I haven't had any issues with this location and my colleagues and I have been coming here for quite some time. The last time I went I'm not too sure if they had just had a rush but this particle individuals section was so dirty. Instead of cleaning the tables like the other employees he simply just left the mess lying around. What really upset me at that time that made me feel to write this review was there was a broom lying on the floor for about 15 minutes give or take. And when someone went near his section suggesting they'd like to sit there he said it's dirty there's a table over there with such a rude attitude. Well aside from that an elderly woman was walking towards his section which of course was disastrous with a broom lying there where she could trip. I of course not wanting to watch a elderly woman fall got up and moved the broom out of the way. He approaches me which I see his name tag is Quinn and says oh I was gonna move that and now I conclude why this area I'm sitting near is the way it is. His eyes are bloodshot red and he smells of weed. My colleagues and I just left we couldn't even finish our meal. If those are the type of employees Lubys hires I will no longer go there.
