This location is always very clean and I like the windows and open environment. The food is very good. My go to is the fried fish and Mac and cheese of course. Sweet tea is the best, you can also ask for a Togo cup. The desserts are amazing, especially the graham cracker cheesecake. read more

Everything needs salt. The green beans, the spinach, the almond-crusted fish, the angus steak. Even the salt needs salt. I sprinkled it and felt like it wasn't making a difference. If they would learn how to season things this would actually be really good comfort food. The angus steak was otherwise juicy, and they have good bread and mac and cheese. The waitstaff is never too clingy at Luby's unlike other chains. read more

As a child, Luby's was one of my favorite places to eat with my grandmother. Last Sunday, I was craving that chicken-fried steak Luna platter, so I decided to drop by. Drive thru and dine in were both available, and I chose drive-thru to avoid people. The other drive-thru customers seemed to be a little impatient with me. The employee taking my order was not being slow, but preparing my family-size chicken fried steak plate (only the cost of 3 Luanns) as I was ordering. This means I got my meal as soon as I pulled up to the window. Overall, the chicken fried steak was great. Crispy breading, tender beef, and thick cream gravy. I'm not sure I got six steaks though, my only critique. The mashed potatoes went great with the CFS and the gravy, and the Mac and cheese was good, cafeteria quality. Note that you can get both brown and cream gravy. It's sad that Luby's will be going out of business later this summer. I will be sure to come a couple of times before then. I haven't been to Luby's in a quite a while but always loved going there as a kid and later as an adult. So, after my doctor's appointment, which was across the way from a Luby's, I decided to drop in for old times sake. The place was still very much as I remembered so I got in line, grabbed a tray and went down memory lane. I decided to go with the manager's special: cheese enchiladas, two sides, and a choice of bread for $6.99, not bad at all. For my two sides, I selected the Spanish rice and pinto beans; for my choice of bread, I asked for the jalepeno corn bread. While I walked down the line I saw some old favorites such as the fried fish, chopped steak, mac-n-cheese and mashed potatoes. They will have to wait for a return visit. But I digress, my enchiladas were good. Now, I'm not going to tell you this was the best tex-mex food I've ever eaten but the enchiladas were good. Stuffed with a plentiful amount of cheese with a good enchilada sauce. The rice was fluffy and the beans were seasoned well. The jalepeno corn bread was really good. It was still warm and with some added butter it didn't last long. Overall, Luby's has stuck to their same winning recipes and continue to serve good food consistently and at a good price. I'll be back to try some of my old favorites and this time I'll bring my mom to relive some good times. read more

Luby's is what it is. Fried and buttered-to-death, "home-cooked" blandness. Besides the salad area, I could not find a single acceptable item to purchase. I made the mistake of getting what I thought was coleslaw, and it turned out to be a small bowl containing some sort of bacon ranch dressing, with shreds of what did NOT look like cabbage. The bowl was dripping, smothered with the dressing. The jalapeno cornbread just broke into pieces - extremely dry. They offer no caffeine-free drink besides water. I wonder if they still upcharge you, if you purchase three separate vegetables. You get slammed with the "three vegetable plate" charge, which is often more expensive than the separate items. The desserts look great, but I avoid those. The grilled fish looked to be soaked in butter I know, I know, it is what it is. I suppose healthy alternatives on the menu would be desired by few, and be quite unsuccessful. Also, the food costs as much as a regular restaurant. I was there earlier this week and was debating whether to write a review or not. The lady at the counter was really nice and helpful for my to go order, however there were some issues with the packaging which left me very frustrated. I got the fish Almondine, cabbage and fresh green beans with the cheddar jalapeno biscuit. The cabbage I received was build up halfway with a butter or oil whatever it is cooked in and was completely sake. I drained out the oil or the liquid and it was flavorless. I ended up tossing it. The green beans were good as was the fish however I ended up getting a regular roll vs the cheddar jalapeno biscuit. I also ordered a slice of lemon icebox cake. This was my main bone of contention. The pie was all over the inside of the bag when I open it. There was red and cake filling all over the other containers and the pie was completely smashed itself. For $4 a slice I was really upset and everything was sticky. I like this Lubys and have never experienced a problem but this was super disappointing :-( read more

Oh my goodness! Today I went through the drive thru at Luby's for a salad and they just happened to be serving chicken tortilla soup. I am not kidding, this is the best. soup. ever. Let's forget for a moment that she gave me diet Coke instead of unsweetened tea. For $5.99 you can get this lovely side salad, a rather large cup of deliciousness and a piece of bread of your choosing all in a matter of minutes. First time ever coming to Luby's was a few weeks back when we went for the all-you-can-eat breakfast! I was super excited to try it after hearing from friends how great it was and seeing it advertised on TV. I got there pretty early (fatal mistake) around 9AM, the all you can eat brkfst runs from 8AM-10AM I believe. I walked in to Luby's (first time ever eating here) and I really wasn't sure what to do. There wasn't anyone in front of me so I just kind of stood there waiting to be helped. I seriously thought maybe it was where you served yourself and sat down like at most original buffets, but that's not what Luby's is like! The servers behind the glass get the food for you which I really didn't like. I found it kind of awkward directing them which food I wanted, plus I didn't really have much time to look over the buffet to see what there was but I figured, I'd come back up again after I had my first plate. We checked out and the price was considerably more than what I thought it would be but didn't think twice about it. Figured the drinks were expensive or something, so we just sat down. The food was definitely not something fantastic! The pancakes were really hard and rubber-like, which made me turned off from the beginning. The eggs and bacon were just like cold - it was weird. The only thing I genuinely enjoyed was the coffee which was piping hot and strong, just how I like it. The place was extremely dead. Only ONE other person in there at the time we went which I was surprised. I figured it'd be full that early in the morning. Anyways, we went up again to get a second plate and the lady told us that we had to pay for an all-new plate because we didn't purchase the all-you-can-eat. I just thought it was a bit strange since they advertise it, I figured that's what everyone would get automatically as you enter. But I guess not! Totally not paying another $8 for a crappy plate of flood. Went elsewhere and haven't been back since. I wouldn't recommend for breakfast, maybe it's better throughout the day, but not at breakfast time! read more

I honestly don't have much to add here that hasn't been said already: this chain seems to be changing itself, and not for the better. Prices have gone up without an increase in quality, there are now servers/attendants hassling you in the dining room and expecting a tip for mundane tasks I'd rather do myself, and now they offer a breakfast buffet that looks subar at best. I went here recently on Easter and Memorial day, and my BF has gone here for Thanksgiving. It's a decent option for home-cooked food, and I appreciate that they're open on holidays so that people who don't have family can still enjoy a tasty meal. That being said, the aforementioned issues still make my experience here more negative than positive. If you're going to offer a $13 steak, it shouldn't be overcooked to death. I like that the portions can be rather large, but dislike the inconsistency of taste- I had an amazing chicken and mushroom dish, something with the word madeira in the name, and I've never seen it again. Meanwhile, there are always five fish dishes every time I come here, and they all more or less taste the same. read more

First, I would likev to thank the manager at Luby's on San Pedro (Hwy 281 at Bitters) for extending an invitation to me for the incident that took place in this Luby's. Second, I dined at Luby's on Floyd Curl yesterday and the food was exceptional. I noticed the food manager, Bill actually cutting pie and placing in plates for the serving line. I noticed some of the cashiers were training for the new cash system after talking with the manager from Laredo, TX. Even though the cashiers were in training, the food line never backed up. The food at this Luby's is exceptionally good, fresh and line appearance is superb. I will be dining at this Luby's more often. Lastly, pickled beets are my favorite! The pickled beets at Luby's on Floyd Curl were exceptionally tasty, no oil added. The Luby's on Hwy 281 and Bitters added olive oil, I was told at one time by the salad server. No oil should be added to beets. If you purchase a jar of Del Monte pickled beets, there is no oil added. Finally, thanks go to the manager at Luby's on Hwy 281 and Bitters. read more

So this time I called to place my order to go. But when I called the manager claimed that they were closed but it was only 6:50pm. As I drive up I see cars in the drive through so I get in line and decide to call it in and what a surprise this time the girl answered and says they are open till 8pm. I don't know why I keep giving this place chances after chances and that's that I came Wednesday around 4pm and waited in the drive through and I asked for the turkey luann. They said we're all out u can come back in an hour or two. So I took my business else where. I have given up on this Luby's location I rather drive else where. If u don't want business especially in this crisis that the food industry is in then just close your doors or get employees who do want to work !!! read more

My husband had an eye appointment across the street today so we decided to go to Lubys. Haven't been to one in years. First let me say the the selection of food was fabulous and brought back memories of my favorites from other visits. My disappointment comes from the fact that there was only one of two cash registers open and we had to wait in line almost 20 minutes to get to the register. Needless to say by the time we were finally able to sit down everything was cold! We even saw one poor guy actually eating his food in the line waiting to check out. Numerous people around us were on their lunch hour and were given little time to actually eat. Please be aware with your current system there needs to be another register open during the lunch rush. read more

This review is for THIS Luby's...not all Luby's. This is my little Luby's down the way where I often drive thru, completely hungover, and order every side dish they have al a carte. The drive thru is not a fast experience when you order say...chicken fried things, but if you're doing the veggie plate, it's awesomely timely. The food = Luby's, so don't get all la ti da about it. Be realistic. The service = what makes this place stand out. Outstanding, if you will! Every time I drive thru here, the order taker is either the happiest employee they have, or the owner/manager/CEO..somethin! Today we got food for my sick Mamma, and it took a little time for her chicken fried chicken, so the manager brought out sweet tea for my hubs and I, and threw in some extra rolls. Couple that with a winning smile and a genuine personality, and I would come here even if the food weren't all that! Put this one on yer yelp bookmark for a try. And do yourself a favor, try the drive thru so you can skip the ambiance, and feel like your Nanny cooked at home. TIP: That was your tip. read more

If you don't know what Luby's is and you're from Texas, you're silly, but if you must know, Luby's is a cafeteria style diner. They have a variety of appetizers and entrees and desserts for everybody! I personally am a fan of the Chicken Fried Steak, the fried cod, and the chopped steak plates. Each plate comes with an entree, 2 sides, and some sort of roll of your choice. They also have a Luanne platter, which comes with half an entree and 2 sides, plus a roll. The food is fresh enough, it's not made to order but it doesn't sit under heating lamps too long. The dining experience though is what caused this place to get a 2 star rating from me. They have hosts throughout the restaurant, that are supposed to get you refills or anything else you need, but, they aren't very attentive, I usually finish my plate before I am offered a refill. I don't mind getting up and getting it myself, I'd prefer that, but, you got hosts, so I expect the service to be good, ja feel? Sometimes I can smell the bathrooms from the other side of the restaurant, that's not cool, I should only smell my food, not someone's left overs. There are other Luby's in the city that I prefer, so until I get another coupon from this location (only reason I went here), I think I'll be visiting the Fredricksburg rd spot or the downtown one. read more

I usually like this Luby's but didn't have the best experience yesterday. I went in to just make a Togo order so I figured I would just go thru the line like everyone else. Well, when I told the cafeteria lady that I would have my fried fish Luann Togo she told me that I would have to wait until she serves her dine in customers first even though they were behind me in line. Doesn't make sense because I waited in line like everyone else and was going to walk thru the line like everyone else. When the lady behind me told the cafeteria lady that I could go first the cafeteria lady angrily grabbed a to go container and said "what do you want?" Very rude. Luckily another guy took over and finished my order. But seriously that experience left a bad taste in my mouth. Might reconsider going to this luby's in the future. read more

I have been back several times since my previous review. I must say that my experience with the service has been a complete turnaround. I haven't been back during the evening, though, only during lunch. The salad lady is always friendly. There are also 3 waitresses on the floor who are also exceptionally friendly. My favorite menu item is beef tips and rice, but they seldom have it. I also like the chicken tenders, beef cheesesteak, baked white fish, and fried fish. My least favorites are spaghetti, and meatloaf. The meat loaf this week had crunchy onions in it as did the spaghetti. I love the desserts. For dessert, the butternut brownie is the best...love love love it. read more

I really enjoy the food, variety, and specials. I'm on a limited income so the specials really help me in feeding myself and two grandchildren at an affordable price. They are toddlers and they enjoy all the different flavors of food which is a plus for their health and the restaurant. They use to be picky-eaters. No more fast foods for us. We can eat healthier at half the cost! Service is fine for the most part, but the food servers show their annoyance quickly when their flow is disturbed. One gentleman, in particular, speaks loudly in a condescending manner and wipes his sweaty face with an open hand. He picks up your plate and dishes your entree with those wet salty hands. I try to avoid him, but entrees is his station. The only way to avoid him is to go to the Luby's closer to my home. read more

I used to LOVE Luby's when I was little and was excited to go to lunch with my co-workers last week at the Huebner location. The line moved quickly and the food was just like I remembered. I love that Lu-Ann with roast chicken & macaroni and cheese! Is it healthy for you? Absolutely not, but it is YUMMY! I'm sad that they have increased their prices and have transitioned to have waiters instead of the person that just comes around with the cart.
