The food and the service was impeccable! Our Server David was Professional, prompt and didn't skip a beat. We arrived with a large party and we're greeted with a smile and water without asking. He educated us on the specials and knew every last detail about the menu, the ingredients and asked if any if us had food allergies , which was comforting. The food quality is extremely high and the prices are more than reasonable , especially during these times of drastic inflation. Finally made it to Lucilla with my hubby on a special date night, and it was wonderful. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Hubby had chicken, which was very good, but he preferred my salmon. Fantastic food and service! Our favorite restaurant for fine dining comfort food in Tallahassee with a great chill ambiance, killer music, great mood lighting, and a solid menu. My son loves the adorable salt and pepper shakers and the pimento cheese fritters and, of course, now asks for Crème Brûlée all the time. The wonderful chef is always accommodating vegan dishes and my wife is partial to the filet. Fantastic wine and beer selection. Went there with a friend, it's well appointed with cute sconces and well spaced tables so we didn't feel crowded in. We started with their oyster appetizer recommended by our server Joseph, who was fun and efficient. They were the best oysters I've ever had. I absolutely will go back and order them as an entrée with a salad. Wow, they were better than perfect. I ordered their Vinegar Chicken with collards and mashed potatoes. It had mushrooms and tomatoes, mixed in with the sauce, they were cooked perfectly. The potatoes were so highly whipped, that they were featherlight and absolutely delicious. I thought the collards were good, too mush but they had stems that were slightly firm and plenty of bacon to give them flavor. No complaints but I wouldn't order them again simply because I have other things I prefer. The vinegar chicken was outstanding, the only negative was when they say vinegar, they mean vinegar. I expected a gravy that had a vinegar note, not an overwhelming vinegar flavor. That said, I enjoyed the chicken very much and used the sauce sparingly. Leftovers ate well the next day. My friend ordered the Bradley's pork chop with grits and collards. The pork chop was beyond huge, she loved the grits and collards. The plating of the meals was beautiful, service was outstanding, the interior could use some warming up. Location is interesting because it's clearly not a high rent area but it's easy to get to and easy to park. That's a huge plus! Signage could be better. Bottom line is it's excellent gourmet food with medium/high prices, I will be back because it was excellent, if they elevated the atmosphere somewhat it would match the quality of the food. We heard a lot of good things about Lucille and decide to try their take on southern cuisine. * Pimento Cheese Fritters These had a bourbon peach glaze and a Dijon mustard-type dipping sauce and were delicious. Of course it's hard to mess up fried cheese, but they were excellent. *Spring Vegetable Pot Pie Almost a de-constructed pot pie stuffed with black eyed peas, asparagus, tomatoes, mushrooms, and corn. The bottom and top crust was buttery and flakey like a croissant and paired with a spring salad. * Summer Feta Chicken Lots of spinach, whipped feta, and lemon flavor in this dish so perfect for summer consumption. What ruined this dish for me was the store bought boxed pasta used for the dish. I know it's a southern restaurant and wouldn't specialize in made in-house pasta but still. * Brown Sugar Poundcake A little dense but paired nicely with whipped cream and placed in a pool of butterscotch/Carmel-type sauce. We last minutely choose to come to Lucilla for Valentine's Day. Unfortunately called in too late and couldn't get a reservation, but got to the restaurant by 5:45 and was seated immediately. It was a great decision to come to Lucilla's. The first thing I noticed was the menu was not unnecessarily large. It had a good amount of options where you can make a decision in ample time, and there's choices for all. Vegetarian, meat lovers, chicken, and fish! As two broke college kids, we decided to save our money on the wine/beer and order two appetizers instead. We got calamari (special for the holiday) and smoked duck breast. The calamari were not rings but it was fresh and cooked to perfection. It was basically melting in my mouth. Not chewy at alll. The smoked duck breast was also amazing. The little side salad paired perfectly with the duck breast. For our entrees, I tried the st. Charles grouper and my bf got the andouille stuffed chicken. Both were served with the creamiest mashed potatoes ever! My entree had crab meat with some lemon butter sauce and thinly fried sweet potatoes, absolutely amazing. I was so stuffed from the two appetizers I had to take it home. And was very pleased to eat it as a late night dinner. Our desert, we ordered the key lime creme brûlée. What's not to love about Lucilla? The tender Snapper St. Charles topped with crab meat, the crunchy Hot Chicken Sandwich with gratifying thin-cut fries, the fried Shrimp and locally sourced Bradley's Grits. As somewhat of a biscuit aficionada, I can attest that the base of the Crab Cake Benedict is a very good biscuit. The mimosa bar is spectacular if you're looking to treat yourselves at brunch. Our bubbly was served with fresh fruit and six juices and tonics. I happened to eat here for a friends birthday during my Whole30. They placed a filet of snapper on top of a warm goat cheese salad (sans goat cheese) for me. It was delicious and so appreciated. The service is always outstanding and the atmosphere is interesting. That is what the chef told me after we had been waiting for half an hour for a table that had cashed out and I reapectfully asked the party whose table we were waiting on if they were planning to stay much longer. To be fair we may have been ten minutes late for our reservation (I had 8 minutes). The hostess did not tell us that she had given our table to someone else when we arrived, only that the table had been cashed out and we were just waiting for the party to leave. Lucilla, Lucilla, Lucilla! What can I say? We have dined with you on two different occasions now, both with friends, and each time has been spectacular. During our two visits we have sampled the Crab Cakes starter, Bradley's Country Sausage starter, the Pimiento Cheese starter, and the Black Dragon Shrimp starter. All were amazing in flavor and originality but the Black Dragon Shrimp holds a special place in my heart. The uniqueness in which this dish is cooked and served is brilliant. The smokey taste just can't be beat. As far as mains go, I can't seem to get away from the Cast Iron Seared Filet, but my husband has branched out and tried both Green Hill Chicken and a fish dish. All three dishes were excellent. We enjoy the intimate, romantic feel of the restaurant decor and I also love the fact that I can bring my own wine in, as you don't carry my particular kind. Visited Lucilla based on yelp's recommendations. Our food was good I got the vinegar chicken and my husband got the bolognese. Next time I'll choose something else because the vinegar chicken is extremely vinegary. My husband loved his bolognese. For dessert we got the butterscotch pot to creme. The texture was not my favorite it was also way too sweet it tasted like dulce de leche out of a jar. They need to work on the feed in getting the food to the customer. I got the fried oysters as an appetizer and those are literally some of the best oysters I've ever had. All three sauces it came with were absolute perfection. For my entree I got the grouper st. Charles. I highly recommend this as well. Grouper is super light and flaky. The mashed potatoes are average but still tasty. The crab definitely makes this dish. This is a really cool place. It's got a fine dining feel without the fine-dining prices. It's unassuming from the outside, but once you see the dining room, you feel like you left Tallahassee. The menu is interesting. They take classic dishes and "hipsterify" it. For example, the crab cakes. It's two mini crab cakes which I would consider fine by themselves, but they lay them on top of a roasted succotash mix. It was definitely good, but I'm okay if they just gave me 2 crab cakes on a plate. I got the "snapper st. charles" for my entree. It was just a piece of grilled fish with mashed potatoes on the side. They "hipsterified" it with ribbons of sweet potatoes. Again, it was good, but not necessary. The key-lime creme brulee was very tasty and beautifully plated. I was dining solo, so I only ate half of it. The whole experience was probably a little over $50, which is cheap for a fine-dining experience. Even when the place got packed, my waitress was still very attentive and on top of her game. This definitely made the list of places I would recommend in Tallahassee. read more

My first visit was for dinner. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile and realized last week that we wouldn't be able to just drop in, so we booked for dinner. Please forgive my review as I tend to narrate in order of major event recollection rather than chronological order... try and stay with me. This is located in a building the formerly housed a casual dine-in restaurant. It's essentially the same layout, redecorated. The updates to the interior were nice, but not comprehensive. Old window dressing hardware remain mounted in each window, the secondary (old heavy) door jams open and should be replaced or removed. The dining room was redecorated but not remodeled. Incoming and outgoing guests must dodge staff going in and out of the kitchen. There was a "traffic jam" when I was trying to exit and since I was stuck I looked down and noticed that although the dining room floor was beautiful new tile, I was standing on old worn chipped tile. Tables and setting in dining room are lovely, wait staff have nice appearance, our server was curt and didn't seem to enjoy the social aspect of the job. They didn't have a printed dessert menu, so the server had to repeat the desserts, (uncomfortably and with great speed). It was difficult to decide when we had to remember the list of ingredients rattled off. I had filet mignon, it was lovely, plating was nice too. Asparagus was cold (undercooked, not al dente), steamed slightly (no butter, oil, salt... anything). Everyone loved their meals until... one of my dinner companions pulled a hair from their plate. The hair had been wrapped around a green bean and suddenly they lost their appetite. Our server wasn't around often, but eventually came over and we pointed out the hair which was now laid out on top of the unfinished mashed potatoes. "In your beans..., I'm sorry about that", was the response from the server before the plate was whisked away. We never disclosed it was pulled from the beans - and found that troublesome. Later the server explained the meal would be removed from our ticket, no replacement was offered, no concern if the guest was hungry. I thought it to be an odd response and way to address someone who had not finished their dinner. No charge is fair, but we came to eat dinner after a long day of travel. Weird. We had the key lime creme brûlée & butterscotch dessert w/ salted cream - both were rich, and nice. I don't quite enjoy the key lime flavor in the creme brûlée though, too sweet. I liked the food okay, it was difficult engage with the server for whatever reasons... they were quick to dismiss themselves without giving anyone the opportunity to speak. I would like to come back after they've been open for a bit longer. I'm pretty surprised with the ratings, and walked in expecting a better experience. read more

The brunch was so much better than I could have anticipated, even after I've had such wonderful experiences for lunch. I had a poinsettia and my husband, the lucky goat coffee. We ordered an appetizer of the pimento cheese fritters, which were unbelievable. I figured fried cheese balls would be really good, but they still surprised me with such an awesome blast of warm cheesey flavor (served with fresh herbs and pear jelly). The pear jelly drizzle was not the star, however, as the black pepper aioli served in the center of the order stole the show. I want a sandwich with some of that aioli on it, or fries, or a steak.. anything. For our main course, my husband had the stuffed french toast and I had the chicken biscuit with the honey butter on the side. The honey butter was more savory than sweet (which is the way I prefer everything!), so next time I won't need to order it on the side. I added hot sauce to the chicken biscuit and was pleased to discover that they have green Tabasco sauce as their house hot sauce. I did not realize how good that sauce was! (Way better than regular Tabasco!) The chicken was so crispy and flavorful. It was perfect fried chicken. That is not an exaggeration. If any restaurants in the south serve fried chicken that differs from this fried chicken in any way, they are likely wrong. The biscuit fell to pieces, but it was crispy and perfectly dense, so it didn't bother me that the second half of the biscuit had to be eaten with a knife and fork. I don't doubt that whenever I eat a chicken biscuit going forward, I will wish it was this chicken biscuit. The stuffed french toast was so decadent! It was a dessert to me and the serving size was too big even for my husband to eat in one sitting, so we took a box home. This brunch was a true flavor experience. It was not the bland homefries of other nearby (and unnamed) restaurants. If you want to wait in line for mediocrity, this is not the restaurant for you. This place is for foodies. Yelpers, you didn't let me down! While passing through Tally, I did a quick check of what's "new & hot". Lucilla quickly made the cut. I agree with a few others that the food and service are spot-on, but the setting is a bit of a head-scratcher. (Check out the pic of the front entry.) Yes, an old generic cinderblock building nestled between a Little Caesar's Pizza and a Lindy's Fried Chicken, in what feels like a neighborhood best suited for exactly these types of establishments. Nothing about the place screams "upscale fine dining", and this from a New Orleans guy who knows better than to judge a book by its cover. Once, you get past the questionable exterior of the building, and find the unmarked entry, you'll be greeted by smiling faces in a small hostess station/lobby area. Then into the dining room, with black & white soda fountain-like floors, wood top tables, nice lights, with borderline, too many windows. The star of the show is definitely the menu, with an adequate wine list, and enough small & large plates to satisfy. We opted for a couple glasses of wine, with delicious, warm bread & butter, the vegetable pot pie, Bradley's sausage plate and crab cakes, served with succotash. Yum! Maybe my fatal error in coming here was reading too many stellar Yelp reviews and creating impossibly high expectations. Maybe it was just ordering the wrong thing. Whatever happened I was pretty shocked that this was not my new favorite spot. I came for lunch and immediately loved the way it was renovated. The space is welcoming and stylish; a nice reprieve from some of the new spots around town that are just carbon copies of other well-designed restaurants (exposed brick, Edison bulbs, wood accents etc.). The service is excellent: we were seated immediately, drink orders taken, and our server was attentive without hovering. My husband and I both ordered the specials; I got the Salmon Frites with béarnaise sauce, french fries, and sautéed spinach. I ordered the Salmon medium and it was a bit overcooked. The béarnaise sauce was cooked perfectly, but the spinach, which was quite delicious and perfectly garlicky, was super duper greasy. The fries were thin and cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the pasta which featured penne in a cream sauce and while I am a huge garlic junky and a die hard supporter of all things decadent, the pasta was overpowered by the garlic and the sauce was so heavy and oily that I really couldn't take more than a bite. Don't get me wrong, this place is good, and it's not so expensive that I left feeling cheated. I definitely feel like this place has 5-star potential I just feel that the two dishes I tasted really missed the mark. Something I've never done in all my years on Yelp is attend a yelp event in a city other than my own. THE SCENE While making plans for a quick weekend visit to see my son in Tallahassee, I decided to check their events board a few days prior to see if any events were scheduled. To my great fortune, there was! A UYE set up by Tim K that was also being attended by one of my newest yelp friends Michael H. I was truly excited to attend this event. THE EXPERIENCE If I'm being honest, Lucilla's confuses me. The outside reminds me of an old 1970's McDonald's with a fresh coat of paint while the inside looks like a lounge being rented as an event space. They did a nice job with the table décor and linens, but my mind couldn't wrap around the mish-match of things that just didn't seem to go together. The surrounding setting also doesn't seem to match. Based on the prices of the food, I would have expected Lucilla's to be in a posh area of town. Honestly, if you look at their beautiful online menu prior to visiting, pulling up to the exterior will make you double check if you are in the right place! The interior space is rather dark in the evenings which made it tough to get a quality picture of the food. Service was fantastic as Paige ran our table like a BOSS! She was as attentive as you could hope to expect and more! The chef wears what looks like pajama bottoms, which I've seen only a few other times, but always in Florida. Once at Ulele in Tampa, other time at Southern Charm in Jacksonville and still another time at a brunch spot in St. Augustine. I guess it's a Florida thing, which I think is kinda fun. THE FOOD The best part about meeting up with yelpers is how willing everyone is to share their food! I got the opportunity to try several items on the menu as well as share my meal. Although it was not on the dinner menu, the chef agreed to make me the shrimp n' grits after discovering I drove all the way from Atlanta to try them. Strange this would not be on the dinner menu, but I'm grateful they accommodated my failure to notice this when making plans to visit. I'm sure they have their reasons, but shrimp n' grits is a staple dinner dish in most of the South. SHRIMP N' GRITS (3.5 stars) | $19 entree Description: Cheesy herby Bradley's stone ground grits, roasted corn, andouille bell pepper gravy, crispy gulf shrimp. + Verdict: I fell in love with this dish from the yelp picture alone. I had NEVER seen fried shrimp featured on a Sn'G plate before and simply had to have it. I do wish the grits had more flavor, but it was a solid dish overall. My problem with this dish really is the price. I've had amazing Shrimp n' Grits around the country for less than $14. Maybe this is the best Tallahassee has to offer, but it wouldn't even crack my top 5 list of favorites. *** SIDE NOTE: Reviews are great, but for me it is the picture that sells me on whether or not I want to believe the review. *** FRIED OYSTERS (5 stars) | $11 appetizer Description: Crystal-caper aioli, datil pepper cocktail sauce, champagne mignonette. ++ Verdict: Absolutely delicious! My wife believes the odd flavor was rosemary while I believe it was wine. Whatever it was, this dish tastes like a bottle of medicine was spilled inside it during the process of cooking. PIMIENTO CHEESE FRITTERS (3.75 stars) | $7 appetizer Description: Topped with bourbon peach glaze + Verdict: My wife thought this appetizer was 5 stars, but I was slightly less impressed. BOTTOM LINE Although I had no major problems with the meal or appetizers, overall I probably would not return (except maybe to grab the fried oysters to go). Lucilla is a welcome addition to the fine-dining scene in Tallahassee. With a combination of attentive and well-trained servers and an excellent menu, Lucilla makes you want to find an excuse to visit on more than an anniversary or birthday. On a recent visit with fellow Yelpers and friends, we had the chance to sit down and share a large portion of the menu amongst ourselves. Honestly, it's hard to pick a favorite, as everything was beautifully prepared and presented! The crab cakes were quite tasty and actually contained the crab they are sold as, since too often I've tried crab cakes with 90% breading and maybe 10% crab snuck in there. I also sampled the Bradley's country sausage and pimiento cheese fritters, which are perfect appetizers for a restaurant focused on putting a fine-dining twist on typical Southern cuisine. For my main entrée, I had the green hill chicken and loved everything about it! So delicious and well-proportioned for a main dish. Finally, I ended my meal with the bread pudding, which is a hefty dish, so try something like the key lime creme brulee if you are looking for something on the lighter side. Throughout the meal, our server Paige was incredibly friendly and happy to explain any item on the menu, as we put her knowledge and training to the test. She especially handled our large group well, keeping everyone's drinks full and food coming out in a timely manner. this establishment has easily become my favorite in Tallahassee for many reasons! First time coming I had the shrimp and grits and it is by far the BEST in town. Bold statement folks I know. I've had shrimp and grits from all over Nola and surrounding parish's and this one is very close to being better than authentic New Orleans style. Also, holy crap y'all make the best filet!! With the most perfect mashed taters and asparagus I've ever had. If I could eat out 5x a week this is where I would go. Amazing ambience, very sweet wait staff (I got sang two twice by different team members on my bday) and they really know how to make a girl feel special. My son and I were travelling with my husband for a meeting, and the co-workers chose Lucilla for dinner that evening. We weren't disappointed. Since we were starving, we weren't really concerned much with how the place looked on the outside or the ambience inside. I am not a picky person. The interior was tastefully decorated and clean, and that was enough for me. The menu was short and sweet, with a just handful of small plates, soups/salads, and dinners to choose from. The pre-dinner bread and butter that was brought out looked simple, but tasted divine. The bread was hot, with a crusty outside and spongy inside. It came with sides of small balls of warm butter, which is the way I like it (soft and spreadable). I ordered the Scottish Salmon and enjoyed it thoroughly. My salmon was cooked perfectly (well-done), still juicy and tender, and the creamy tomato/shiitake sauce was a wonderful complement. A side of creamy, herbed grits and collards seasoned with bacon was a perfect pairing for me. My 13-yr old, who enjoys trying new things, ordered the Duck and raved about it all night. He said it was tender and the sauce was richly-flavored. Hubby ordered the Vinegar Chicken and had no complaints. The chicken had a little bit of tang, and was hot and tender. I felt the portions were just right-sometimes at these prices they can be prissy portions where you leave hungry-not so here. All the meals that arrived at our table looked delicious and filling. We shared a Key Lime Creme Brûlée for dessert. The whipped cream was infused with lime flavor and bits of lime zest and was my favorite part, lol! There was nice crust and a very rich, limey creme below. Nothing to complain about. The service was a bit on the slow side, but we had a party of 14. The server also brought out our check and hadn't even asked us whether we wanted dessert. There was no dessert menu that was offered, so perhaps they don't have one and maybe just have a few things that they spout off to you, or maybe our server got too busy. However, I had read previous yelp reviews and already knew I wanted the Key Lime Creme Brûlée. All-in-all it was a delightful little restaurant with unusual takes on some typical menu items, and added details that made the food feel extra-special. read more
