This was a cool and different sushi dining experience for me. Right off the bat, I have to say: if you are afraid of heights, do not go here. It's on the 21st floor of a building in DTLA and has really great views of the city, and there are half-glass walls so it's nice and breezy, but it would be a challenge for someone afraid of heights. Anyways! With that out of the way, I had a great lunch experience here with a party of 6 colleagues from work celebrating multiple events. The service was great, attentive but also left us to our chatting, and everyone really enjoyed the food! I actually assumed it would be crazy expensive but I found it to be quite reasonable, especially with the lunch specials, and the sushi was good quality. Im sorry... this place was a huge disappointment. Before I get into the negatives and areas to improve. Ill start off by the 2 things that made us stay. For one the view of DTLA was nice. Parking was tricky. Our waiter was nice and attentive. Upon walking in there is a bar and 8 foot table with a moon overhead. In my opinion ion that table is a waiste of space because no decent adult can truly sit there and have a conversation. The table is short, the chairs are only 1 foot high and does absolutely nothing for the customer. We had sashimi, edamame and Calamari. Their edamame was nasty. Their Calamari was even worse. The sashimi was small portions and appeared to be frozen and thawed too many times. This is a nice place to simply have a drink and romance your date over the views. The space is an interesting "office building", when you first enter is kind of desolate and you proceed up to a roof, and voilà, great to view! Food: *Robata skewers- New York w/asparagus, chicken breasts, chicken wings, & Angus fillet. - I found the skewers to be pretty good, but it's not very traditional Japanese very Americanized. *Spicy tuna over crispy rice- thought these were good with a generous portion compared to a portion of 3 at most Japanese rest. *Hamachi Kama- this was very good, and not fishy. I do wish they gave some sort of light sauce that's usually is served at a Japanese restaurant. *Uni nigiri- very fresh and creamy, Santa Barbara not fishy at all *hamachi carpaccio- this was good. Fresh and not fishy and on the thicker side of slices. Dessert - will have to say dessert is something I could have skipped, the dessert here wasn't my favorite... * chocolate melted Yuzu- the Yuzu was not my favorite part so either you like it or you don't. I don't really care for Yuzu. It has a slight bite of the aftertaste, which I don't like. * croissant dessert can't remember the exact name, but it's kind of like a mixture of crème brûlée and bread pudding. Not my favorite. * waffle churros- didn't eat this, but between my kid loved it. Overall experience, the food was good, but nothing mind blowing Japanese. I find establishment decent but very Americanized Japanese food. So if you're looking for something good right before you go out or living close and want a consistent Rest, this is the place, But, if you're looking for a traditional Japanese, I'd probably go somewhere else. read more

The building to get to Takami is unassuming so as we walked up to the entrance, security was there to ensure you're at the right spot. Our hostess was aloof so I was reserved about their service. However, when we sat down, our server was attentive and friendly. Notable worthy mentions-- fatty salmon nigiri was my favorite, it had the perfect salmon to rice ratio, and was so buttery, it melted in my mouth. Definitely give the spicy seared salmon a try, the cucumber and jalapeño gave a fresh crunch that paired well with the seared salmon. We did the omakase for my cousins birthday and Seth was the server and he made the experience great! He made sure to explain each course and which items to eat first. He even presented and placed the dishes in a specific way based on how it was intended to be eaten. All of the omakase experiences I've had have been in front of the sushi chef, but this experience was different. Nevertheless, I felt that Seth really elevated the experience. I didn't see any mocktails on the menu so I did ask Seth if they had any mocktails and he told me the mocktails they had and made great recommendations. Each course was so different and was a whole experience in itself. Every dish was unique but the flavors were good and balanced. I wanted to give this place 5 stars, but there were a few things that did not make this experience perfect. After the first course, our dishes still had leftover sauce on it. As the busser was taking our plates, he kept spilling the sauce. One spilled on my cousins boyfriend and I watched as he took my sister's plate and I had to say "you're spilling!" or it would've gotten on her too. This made me very cautious after each course, especially the one that had the hot stone. Another con was the wait in between each course. The other omakase experiences that I've had have been in front of a sushi chef and they limit the amount of guests so they know once you've finished a course and can transition to the next. Of course this restaurant is different and it has its own experience, but the wait between was lengthy. Seth did mention to us about the drinks taking a while so we appreciated the heads up, but the food took a bit of time. Despite the cons, I did like the overall experience. The fish was fresh, and each course seemed to be meticulously thought out. I had a lychee mojito mocktail and a watermelon mocktail and they were both good. I mean the food and service was great but I just can't get past paying $81 (after tax & tip) on one drink and these 2 plates in the picture. On two occasions, we had the wrong order brought to our table. The food was overall pretty good (we ordered a myriad of sushi rolls and robata skewers). There were no complaints there. The majority of our drinks were fantastic! I say most, because a member of our party had a really poorly made strawberry margarita (which we all tried and agreed) that we had to send back.
